Windows 8.1 Pro - Display Won't Resume After Sleep
Sep 15, 2014
I have run into an issue with a Pavilion g60-230us laptop. After going to sleep or closing the lid, when I open the lid again the laptop wakes up, but the display never resumes. I can see it kind of try to come on, but nothing ever shows on the screen. I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro. The system is 32 bit and not running a separate display adapter, just the integrated Intel configuration. I have tried downloading the latest Windows 7 driver from the HP support page for the g60 but it didn't work. They don't offer drivers for Windows 8 on this model. I have also deleted the display in device manager, rebooted and let Windows find and install its own driver, but this also didn't work. Keyboard and mouse both have the box checked for allow this device to wake the computer in the power settings.

Installed Windows 8 Pro clean install just kept my files. Now, every time I resume from sleep it hangs at a black screen for what seems like ever. Only way to start is to hold power button to turn off then restart it.

Thought this was problem - Microsoft writes "When you resume a computer from sleep or from hibernation, the SATA hard disk drivers require the SATA hard disks to be ready within 10 seconds. However, a large SATA hard disk may take longer than 10 seconds to be ready. In this situation, the resume operation times out." in their fix for W7 - You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk
Have tried a variety of things like checking all current drivers, turning off hybrid sleep, power troubleshooter, windows update and the like on instruction but my ASUS p7p55d-e doesn't seem to have any Windows 8 specific drivers.
boot drive C: (partitioned into two logical drives)
Attached dump files as instructed.

I have a Lenovo u410 Ultrabook with an odd problem that began 3-4 months ago that I've been unable to resolve.
Whenever the laptop resumes from sleep mode it forces a complete restart and fails to create a dump file. I have verified that windows is set to create dump files and if I force a crash in some other way I will get a dump file but when it crashes when trying to resume my minidumps folder remains empty.
As far as I can tell it enters sleep mode fine and it's not until it tries to resume that the reboot is triggered. When the problem began I was on Windows 8 and since then have upgraded to 8.1 ... The laptop was able to sleep normally for the first 2-3 months I had it.
Things I have tried so far:
-Installing all the official drivers from the Lenovo support website.
- Running system file checker.
-Running the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
-Sleeping with no peripheral devices connected, tried both while running on AC and battery.
-Removing and re-seating the memory.
-Refreshing windows (I haven't tried a complete reset yet, hoping to avoid that if I can).
In event viewer I get the following error and critical event each time after it reboots:
Error: The previous system shutdown at <time> on <date> was unexpected.Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. There are no other warnings, errors, critical entries.
I am attaching the results of the "Grab All" in the SF Diagnostic Tool right after a reboot. Other than sleep mode not functioning the laptop appears to be running normally without any problems.

I have a frustrating problem on my Windows 8.1 laptop that only started a couple of weeks ago.
Previously, whenever I resumed my laptop from sleep mode, the network would always be instantly available too. I've always been impressed with the speeds of resuming from sleep in Windows 8, it's all pretty instant and means I can get straight back to browsing etc once I've entered my password.
Now, if I wake the laptop from sleep, I enter my password and the network appears to not be available for about a minute or so. Then it functions normally, but it's very, very frustrating as I can't work out the cause. When I resume, if I try and refresh webpages, I get 'network not available' errors in Chrome, but the monitors (I use Network Activity Indicator) in the system tray don't show a loss of network connectivity (i.e - there is no red 'X' over the wireless signal bars)
Sometimes, if when entering my password I get it incorrect, it will say "PC is offline. Please enter the last password you logged on with" - I am assuming this is also due to the above problem.
Why could this have suddenly started happening? No settings have changed/been changed on the router side.

Device : Samsung ativ smart pc (or any clover trail tablet)
I can't get the tablet to just to turn off the display without going to sleep which i noticed will kill any active data connection (downloads, video buffering, updates, data logging)
I noticed that the value of "turn display after" in the power options must be the same value as "put computer to sleep after"
After some search on the internet about the "connected standby" and disabling the "desktop activity moderator" by using " sc config dam start=disabled "But i couldn't get it to work

i have a "microsoft wireless mouse 2000" and my pc is running win 8 pro. most of the times after i resume from hibernation the scroll speed is insane! moving the scroll wheel 1mm causes for example the browser to scroll over one page! in scroll settings it shows "roll wheel one click to scroll 3 lines", no matter what i set this to it still scrolls excesivly.. i need a full system reboot to regain control over scroll speed. this was never an issue with win7.

IE11 seems to have a strange "Feature". When you close a Web site with an active download the whole thing closes and the download disappears -- IE 11 shows no windows open.
However press CTRL+J and you'll see the download lists again. If there's no activity press PAUSE and then press RESUME and then it should continue from where it stopped.
To some this might seem obvious but I've seen people re-start a 2hr download because they thought they had lost their currently active download when they accidentally closed the web site.

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.
However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

I am coming off Linux op system and am a bit lost. My latest endeavor is understanding the Windows 8 partitions.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5721, 8 GB memory, 1 TB hard disk, with Windows 8 O.S.
Looking at the partition display, I see the disk is divided into five partitions. The partitions are named:
"500 MB, Healthy ( EFI System Partition)",
"40 MB, Healthy (OEM Partition)",
"500 MB Healthy, (Recovery Partition)",
"OS (C:, 917.77 GB NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)",
"12.60 GB, Healthy (Recovery Partition)".
All of these partition, except for the NTFS partition, are listed as 100% Free. The NTFS partition is listed as 88% Free.
Are these partition available for use, or are they being used for something(?).
I am working on the boot situation, trying to find out how to input from the cd/dvd writer, but have not over come the "Secure Boot" thing yet. That will be next on my agenda.
I am attaching a copy of the data partition scheme ....

So I upgraded to Windows 8 today and finally finished all the installations only to find that using a 1920x1080 resolution means that the display is too big for my screen (a 32" Samsung full HD TV). The screen is cropped by about a half a CM all the way around. I had to revert to a 1776x1000 resolution for the display to fit properly on the screen but would much rather use the highest possible setting but I cannot seem to fix the problem.
I am running 64-bit and have updated all display drivers and completed windows updates. My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 5800 series.

I have a problem of windows 8.1 and my laptop (HP EliteBook 8560w). My display is full HD (1920x1080), 15.6", GPU: nVidia Quadro 2000M. When I installed windows 8.1 (all version, 64 bit) the GPU driver is updated automatically at lastest version (327.31). But some 3rd application ex: Google chrome... is blurry. Then, I chosed the option "Let me choose one scaling option for all my displays" at 125%. All thing is OK.
But whenever I started my windows, my display always flashing one time, about 1-2s. it's very inconvenience. Because of that problem, I downgrade to windows 8.0. But i still want to use windows 8.1 ....

I've noticed sometimes when I first powerup my windows 8 machine, it turns on, but I get no display on my monitor (has happened with 2 monitors). I am using the latest beta ATI drivers for my card. The weird thing is, pressing delete i dont even get the bios to appear, just a black/dark monitor screen. I am wondering if repairing the bootloader could fix this? How to repair the bootloader? I won't loose any of my data, will I?
After turning off, turning on the computer a few times, I finally get display and can get into windows 8, but it's annoying.
MB is an ASUS P8z68V/gen3

I'm using a Windows 8 64-bit ASUS VivoBook S200E as home media centre. The player is MPC-HC and the Bluetooth remote uses mouse movements and keypresses to browse the playlist and control playback. It's working very nicely, except for one problem - the mouse pointer is never visible! The only way to activate it is by making gestures with the touchpad (or with a mouse). That means getting up which isn't what remotes are all about . The computer has a touch screen, but that isn't used and doesn't affect the mouse pointer anyway.
I've been told that this behaviour is a Windows 8 "feature" for touch screen devices - the device being in touch mode by default and not displaying the mouse pointer until pointer movement is detected. I've tried all settings I could think of but nothing so far has changed this behaviour. Just to be clear, we're not talking about "hide mouse while typing" kind of behaviour. In this case, when the machine boots up there is no cursor, and it remains invisible for ever, unless you move a touchpad or mouse.
Is there some setting or registry value I could modify to change this behaviour?
Alternatively, is there some script I could use to just jiggle the mouse at startup? I've used Windows Scripting Host for things like this before, but the SendKeys method seems not to support mouse control.

I installed windows 8.1 pro preview successfully in English, and since I use French very often, I installed and changed the display language into French. I also checked two options concerning the welcome screen and account users to display them all in French and worked perfectly.
I noticed the watermark before changing the display language into French, then followed this method to remove it : How to Remove Windows 8.1 Preview Watermark | MyTechBlog the method worked fine, but when I changed into French the watermark turned out again, then repeated the same method until I removed it.
when I finished I noticed that "My Computer" which appears as "This PC" + "Control Panel" + when I open Control Panel everything appear in English. but my display language now is French except the aforesaid.

I have Hybrid boot a.k.a Fast Boot enabled before.. This occurred to me last week.
When I click on shut down, It shows shutting down and displays turns off.. little later the screen turns on and the desktop comes back.. If I have turn it off, I have to force the PC by holding the Power button. I googled it and they said to turn off Hybrid boot, but it was the only reason I installed Windows 8..
Now that I turned it off, it takes a while to turn on/off the PC..
This not only affects Shut Down but Sleep, Hibernate and Restart too..

I installed Windows 8 Pro 64bit RTM, but I can't find the "generic display driver" for standard 1280x800 resolution notebook displays. Even "Windows Update" doesn't offer one. I don't want 1024x768. Am I blind or WTF?
Windows 7 64bit has this generic display driver, everything is ok with Windows 7. Do I get my money back from Microsoft?

What is the effect of setting a display as "Main display"?
My expectation is that in a multiple monitor setting, the upper most left hand corner of your "desktop" should be shown by windows on the display marked as "main". Is that wrong?
My problem scenario is that I dock and undock my Surface Pro 3 regularly (I assume this is a WIndows 8.1 question and is not specific to the Surface) and my desktop icons are not always going where I expect them to go.
Sometimes when I dock, my icons are shown on the 2nd monitor (which I have designated as my 'main display'), which is what I expect. But other times when I dock, they are shown on the Surface screen instead, which is a pain..
Sometimes when I undock, the icons are shown on the Surface screen and sometimes there are no icons shown at all on the Surface.. but if I play around with the options to "extend" a monitor or a projector (even though I don't have one hooked up) I can get the icons to appear on the Surface, although they are not lined up like I left them and I have to re-arrange them.
It almost seems to me that the o/s is sometimes not honoring the "main display", or its getting confused. Another small case in point is that, right now, I'm docked and my desktop icons are being shown on the surface, although my 2nd monitor is designated as "main". If I go into the settings and make the surface pro the "main" display, the icons get moved over to the 2nd monitor!

I know how to select the second screen options, however, my Surface Pro and our Samsung Laptop both running Windows 8 cannot detect a second monitor/screen. We are connecting via the HDMI port, but it will not display no matter what option we choose nor whether we run it from the desktop or apps. This is what we use for work to display presentations for clients.

have an HP Envy Touchsmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition Laptop, running Windows 8.1.
When I finished the setup process, I immediately download Chrome, since IE was the only browser pre-installed. Now, I've never used Windows 8.1 or 8 before and am totally new to this new Metro UI and Charms thing (so far I hate it) so as you can imagine I ran into problems immediately.
I will post the full specs of my laptop below, but just know that it has a 1920x1080 display and an Nvidia GeForce GT 740M graphics card.
When I opened Chrome for the first time, it launched as an app. Everything was okay about it, except I didn't like the new concept of "Apps" and Microsoft's idea of multitasking. So naturally I relaunched it in Desktop Mode. However, I noticed that the text (on the URL bar, the buttons, and the tabs, as well as web content) looked much blurrier than it had in Windows 8 mode.
I looked around for a while for a solution, and found it. You simply had to go to the Chrome properties, go to Compatibility, and check "disable display scaling on high DPI settings". Now, what that meant, but when I relaunched Chrome everything was fine again, except for one problem.
Everything was unnaturally small. The tabs, the URL bar, the refresh, back/forward buttons, menu button, and extensions were all smaller than they were in Windows 8 mode and in desktop mode with display scaling.
Compare the 2 screenshots below:
Chrome with display scaling:
Chrome with display scaling disabled:
You might think this is a small thing, but I believe it's a symptom of a bigger problem. The cursor is abnormally small, too. I've tried changing it to a larger one, but the spinning animations don't get bigger in proportion with the pointer.
Specs:
Processor: Quad-Core Intel Core i7-4700MQ (no overlclock)
RAM: 16GB of memory @1600mHz
HDD: 1TB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT740M with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
15.6-inch 1080p Touchscreen display
OS: Windows 8.1

This is how I have come to best like displaying the Applications folder I keep on my Windows8 Desktop Taskbar. Listed in alphabetical order it's how I can pull or access anything I may want @ any given moment w/out leaving Desktop to look for something. I simply scroll up & down for the desired item & it saves changing screens to go get something. A few, like Weather, Calendar, News I'll usually keep sitting on the APP Bar @ the top-left of the Desktop.
