Browsers/Mail :: IE11 Closing Webpage Stops Download But Can Resume
Jul 30, 2014
IE11 seems to have a strange "Feature". When you close a Web site with an active download the whole thing closes and the download disappears -- IE 11 shows no windows open.
However press CTRL+J and you'll see the download lists again. If there's no activity press PAUSE and then press RESUME and then it should continue from where it stopped.
To some this might seem obvious but I've seen people re-start a 2hr download because they thought they had lost their currently active download when they accidentally closed the web site.
I was looking at all my installed programs on my computer. I noticed that Java is not on the list, so that means it's not installed yet.
So I went to Java.com to download it. However, when I clicked "Agree and Start Free Download", Google Chrome (the web browser I was using) shows a fail page. Then I tried all the other web browsers installed on my computer, i.e. Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Opera. Unfortunately, they all showed fail pages as well.
Internet Explorer says "This page can't be displayed", Safari says "Safari can't open the page" with an error code of kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054, Firefox says "The connection was reset", Opera says "This webpage is not available", and Google Chrome says the same thing as Opera ("This webpage is not available") with a different layout of text.
When I'm on the main/first page and put my cursor on a link (cursor won't turn into hand) then when I click it just started saying Opp's then top left circle spins then goes to a page to download something I don't want or bogus.
Another big problem, certain words will be highlighted and a window pop's up (different windows) and want allow me to go to the webpage I want.
This has been happening sense I purchased my new computer wit Win.8
Example: the words on the page highlighted is where I want to go, but a small window pops up and says Best cities to work or Free Local Job Search. Its has a icon to close the windows but when I do it will go to another download type page.
Is there a setting in IE or Firefox to turn that problem OFF ? See on this page there IS NOT a word that is highlighted and what I click I go to.
I am trying to open a webpage [URL] in my laptop (Acer) but am unable to open it after entering username and password.
I am able to open it from my another laptop (Dell).
All I am getting is continuous circling of java after entering my login details. In the laptop where it is getting opened, after entering my login details, I straightaway get a pop up of security warning of do you want to run this application - but not in where it is not getting opened. After entering my login credentials, Java message just keeps circling. I compared java in both laptops, microsoft silverlight package, adobe flash, shockplayer, internet options, firefox options but still unable to proceed further after entering my login details. OS is Windows 8.1,jave installed is latest both 32 and 64 bits.Java verify is detecting java working fine, java settings shows it is enabled in browser I already uninstalled anti-virus and tried but still no success so re-installed antivirus.
I have an ASUS G75 - installed a new Samsung SSD to replace a Kingston SSD + clean install W 8.1 (new product key) + updates.
Trying to login to my company email (they use gmail) through secureauth - the username is accepted and this brings up the password box, but when the password is entered, the password box disappears and all I am left with is the username box. Repeating the process gives the same result.
With the W 8.1 on the old SSD, there was no problem.
On a desktop with W 8.1 there is also no problem. The internet options seem the same on both computers.
Everything else works fine, no boot problems etc etc.
I mentioned not so long back that the chrome browser was closing after being opened and then getting a report that Chrome did not close properly! So after many weeks of this, I decided to return to firefox, in spite of the so called spyware.
Just now, I opened Firefox to do a Google search for somewhere, and - it shut down. When I reopened it, it opened on the page that had crashed. Google search.
So, it either not just chrome, or its a google thing?
Appears browser related as problem is only in IE11. Have googled issue and can find no definitive answer. Clearing cookies, etc and resetting IE11 does not work.
Okay so this has happened several times now and I can't find an solution, I just got finished installking several extensions and changed some settings to Google Chrome, but when I close it, it like resets the browser to default every time and none of them are saved? This is the only web browser this is happening on and its strange?
After upgrading to Windows 8, the I.E. went to hiding, so I retrieved and pin it to task bar. Now, after I open it, it closes right away when I try to go onto a bookmark. The error message says "Internet explorer has stopped working" A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".
I have Windows 8.1 and IE11 always hangs after about 1 hour, all tabs do not respond and the top of the page says Internet Explorer (not Responding).
I can leave it for a couple of hours and nothing happens, when I right click on the IE on the taskbar and select close window an error message comes up that IE is not responding and if I click "close" nothing happens, if I click search for solution and restart, a new IE restarts but the original stays and remains "not responding".
Even Task Manager cannot close it down I have to reboot to get rid of it.
I believe I have the attest version of IE11 (11.01)
Wasn't there supposed to be the swipe back option for the desktop version of IE11? I tried finding an option to turn in on in the advanced settings, but don't see anything there.
My problem is since updating to 8.1, whenever I fire up IE11 on desktop mode a Windows Installer box shows in the middle of the screen saying "preparing to install" and the box continually flashes and the webpage will not load. Why this happens! IE works fine in metro mode and I cannot find any logs in Event Viewer with regards to this problem.
right clicking on the browser back button doesn't achieve anything - I'm really used to it popping down a list of the previous pages so I can hop back for example to the search engine results list page which I had about four pages ago etc.
Unable to put a password to log in for some sites like facebook,... I can post my users name but when i go to the password i try to type the password but nothing happens. So i must copy the password in word and then paste it., then i can log in. What can i do? Internet explorer 11 and windows 8.1
When I try to run the videos at this site, the black window for the video opens, but no video appears to run. Using MS Defender for AV, and have tried disabling pop up blocker, with no change. I can run the videos with my Win7 laptop which also uses IE11 and Defender. The difference between the two setups seems to be Windows 8.1. What I could change for settings to get the video to run.
After I launch IE11 and then close it(with all tabs), then I open the Task Manager on the Processes tab and there are 3 IE11 instances still open and no matter how many times I end these tasks, they'll immediately open again, consuming my ram AND CPU. That's why I started using Chrome. Still, I'd like to know what causes this bug with IE11 in 8.1.
I'm using IE11 on Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I'm manually adding youtube.com to compatibility view settings and when I close IE and reopen it, the compatibility view settings list is empty.
Is there any way to add a website to compatibility view settings and that it will stick?
IE Desktop (Menu bar) Favorites always seem to sort by name. Want to manually shift high usage items to top like I could with IE8. Have disabled Add-ons (Classic IE, Logitech SetPoint, Shockwave) with no effect. Looked in IE options for a sort or drag/drop setting, but didn't see anything.
On booting up 8.1, lenovo z410, the first few attempts to use IE11 from the desktop fail. "cannot open page". Connection troubleshooter produces nothing.
go to APPS > IE and it works fine.
After using chrome and the tile app for awhile, IE11-Desktop will gain coherency and start working. Is there a way to reinstall the desktop side?
this is a clean install with little/nothing loaded on it, about to be deployed for real work so its important.
unable to connect to one particular website using Windows 8.1 with IE11 or Google Chrome.
Always get message...."This page can't bedisplayed", then when I check box to fix connection problem a dialog box displays message, "The remotedevice or resource won't accept the connection... xxx(web site) is not set up to acceptconnections on port 'The World Wide Web Service HTTP'."
There are no problems using IE11or Google Chrome in connecting to any other site(s) or exploring the internet. I do not have any 3rd party antivirus or malware protection. Have tried many different suggestion found in searching the web but no luck yet.
IE opens, but doesn't function properly, won't display web pages and the settings are all greyed out. running 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit. Ran SFC/Scan, but got the error that it found corrupt files but couldn't repair them. Then I couldn't find the file cbs.log to see. I also turned off IE11 rebooted and turned it on then rebooted with the same result. I did have a virus (which I can't remember the name). that is gone but now this.
Here is screen shot, it is small. It is just a "white screen"
