View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a lenovo G505 laptop - it will no longer connect to my BT home hub despite it showing as being available. I suspect it might be to do with the fact that it is has a passkey - I entered it yesterday when prompted and it connected fine, but now I'm not being given the option of entering the key.
I've also tried connected using the BT wifi (as opposed to homehub) but once again it will not connect me. I've been through all the troubleshooting options, and searched under every term I can think of, but nothing is working.
When I click network while i am in windows explorer, the network infrastructure is not there, only the Computer is visible there and i want to fix something by changing the properties of my modem/router on the network infrastructure.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if its possible to boot windows 8.1 remotely.
I know in previous versions of Windows, you can send a magic package and use the WOL feature, however as far as I know this doesn't work with windows 8 because of fast boot.
I have an aunt who runs a business who wants to be able to let the computer run over night at her business and let me access it remotely to do the usual disk cleanup, defrag, virus scans and backups. Currently I have to go on Sundays to do all this and it is just a pain to sit there and wait for the task to complete. I did have some of these automated but some how under the computer illiterate they always get messed up.
Is there a piece of software (preferably free) that will let me access her machine to do all this? It doesn't matter if I need her on the other end to grant me permission to access the machine but I would rather do this from home during the night then do all this on a Sunday.
If I connect to my VPN on my laptop as a remote dial in user from a remote location it works fine. I can access my IP camera and Dreambox satellite receiver by just typing in their fixed local IP addresses in my browser.
I can ping my desktop PC, BUT, I cannot access my LAN. Normally at home my laptop and PC connect on the Windows network automatically. I need to be able to access the PC on the VPN when away from home in the same way.
I have a fixed IP address with my ISP. Other fixed IPs are:
Router IP 192.168.75.1
LAPTOP 192.168.75.13
PC 192.168.75.19
I have tried the Windows and Draytek VPN clients with the same results. I have ZoneAlarm firewall but the problem is the same if I disable it. Antivurus is AVG Free on laptop and Avast Free on desktop.
Unable to figure out a default setting.
Simply for the home desktop and want to share with other kit on the home network.
When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :
1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network."
2 )The reboot.
All works fine and all devices can be seen and read/write in accordance with the appropriate share settings.
Now the issue is when I next reboot the
Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" will default to "This computer is part of a business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work".
So I have to got through steps 1 and 2 again.
How to I get Windows 8.1 Pro x64 to default to the "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." on each boot without having to manual configure.
Since I changed the security parameters to my Linksys Wireless Router so my grandson could log in while visiting me on his laptop. I can't seem to be able to access my other computer on my home network. Enclosed is an "ipconfig/all" screenshot. I need to access my printer on my other printer which I was able to do prior to playing around with my router. All the diagnostics say more or less the same thing. They can "see" the computer but it isn't responding...
View 4 Replies View RelatedWifi worked, walked away for 10 minutes, then found that it didn't. I would normally just reset the router, but I live in an apartment building and the router is in my landlords office.
When I did ipconfig /all, my ip started with 169, which I know isn't normal. But when I try to do a /release and /renew, I get the error "No operation can be performed on local area connection *14 while it has it's media disconnected." I am unable to attempt a wired connection, as the router is not accessible to me.
.I'm not sure if this is a router issue, or an issue with my laptop (less than a year old.) I am a grad student and I currently have to do most of my work via my iphone, which is getting very inconvenient.
I want to create a home network:
modem - Motorola SB 6180, from COX Communication
router - ASUS RT-AC-66U
gigabit switch - TP-LINK TL-SG1005D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged
printer - HP LaserJet Pro 200 color with ethernet port
2 desktops, each running Win 8 Prox64
Cat 6 cables.
Plan A:
Cat 6 cable from modem to router
Cat 6 cable from router to switch
Cat 6 cables from switch to printer and desktops
I think this will give me wifi for my laptop and good connection speed between computers and printer.
I just bought my daughter a Lenovo running Windows 8 and when I try to connect to my Wi-Fi I am getting Limited connection only and can't figure it out.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 2 machines connected via my router/hub (wired). One is running Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 7. Previously I had them sharing perfectly until I did a reinstall of Windows 8 (upgraded to Windows 8.1). I get this message on both machines whilst trying to access shared drives (permissions enabled to read, write, modify for all users):
I have a local account on the windows 8.1 as per previous installation. I have checked all the usual sharing settings and they are the same as in the previous working installation on both machines. I have left the homegroup and created a new one on the windows 8 machine and rejoined on the windows 7 machine all to no avail.
I created a HOMEGROUP on computers A with PRINTER hooked up.. No problem with A, B, C printing.
Now I hooked up PRINTER to computers B. Computers A, B, C do not print (unless I hook up to A).
IMHO if all computers are on the same home network, they should be able to share the same functions. What should I do to hook up the printer to B and A, B, C will print?
I have three computers on my home network:
(a) desktop in the office with ASUS USB-N53 adapter
(b) new desktop in the office with fairly old Broadcom PCI 802.11g adapter
(c) media box hooked up to TV hard wired to router
I recently mapped a drive on system A so that it could be shared with system B (they are side by side). Unfortunately, upon trying to transfer files the speeds are terrible! I am only getting between 500kb/s and 1mb/s.Is this due to my relatively old wireless G adapter?
My laptop is few months old HP Pavilion g6 OS: Windows 8 uses a ralink rt5390r 802.11bgn wifi adapter.
The wifi was working just fine suddenly it stopped. It detects my home network but every time it tries to connect ends up "unable to connect to this network". It connects to my friends wifi but not mine. And it connects with cable.
There is a red cross on the wifi network but it's green not GREY. It is not a modem problem because the other PC connects just fine. When I'm on wifi, cmd ipconfig gives me disconnected media for all the network cards on the laptop. Command netsh shows failure and access denied.
What I have tried to do for the past week :
I upgraded the adapter/ driver. My windows is fully updated. I re-installed the network card. I tried a USB wifi. I uninstalled the private server. I uninstalled my Norton because I thought it was blocking the connection I also deactivated the windows fire wall. I changed the SSID and PSW ... nothing worked. and of course I tried restarting, resetting, rebooting, deactivating and activating, disabling and enabling every single thing but nothing works.
Something about 8 is diff than 7 with regard to setting up Network, and Type of network. This seems to default any new network connection to "Private", whatever that means. In order to share in a Homegroup I need the network type to be "Home".
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a very fast internet connection and video plays fine on all media players on my machine with local video files and internet video but when I try to play video files from a storage drive on a shared Windows 7 machine on my home network the video will play fine for a few minutes then buffer some, then play choppy. It is very intermittent. Also when I open the Homegroup and click on a shared computer (I have several on my Home Network) it will give me an error message saying that the share is not available or cannot be found but if I wait approximately 30-45 seconds and try it again it will usually open the share. I have seen a lot of posts concerning Networking issues in Win 8, is there no fix because from all I have read it seems to be hit and miss. I really would like to get this issue resolved as this throws a monkey wrench in my plans for a HTPC.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to hide devices connected to LAN port 4 on a modem-router from devices connected to the other 3 ports? And also in the other direction: hide all devices on ports 1 2 3 from anything attached to port 4 ?
Instead of specifying by LAN port, the white list of things to see each other could be selected by MAC address, as I only have three things I want to see and be seen on my home network. A black list system is no good because unknown new things might get connected to LAN port 4.
I have an unusual networking situation... I disabled wireless in my modem-router, so only the 4 ethernet ports work.
I have a desktop (Win 7) a laptop (Win 8.1) and a NAS connected to the router's ports 1 and 2 and 3. They are networked by a password protected homegroup.
I share my internet service with a friend in the next apartment, by one ethernet cable attached to port 4 on my modem-router. Now her friends are staying there while she is away for a few months. They are not easy to negotiate with and I can't ask them to make any changes to their computers.
It seems they have added some kind of switch or hub at their end of that one cable, because I often see two or more strange PCs listed in Windows Explorer networks folder. It even lists the 3 usernames on their PCs.
I shouldn't simply disconnect their ethernet cable, or they won't have internet access, but I don't like how their PCs show up in Windows Explorer. Also I guess my three devices are shown on their computers (but probably none of my folders are actually readable by them)
It seems "network discovery" is not selective about what devices it finds. It is simply on or off, and it must stay on for my homegroup network to work.
Should I try a different kind of networking in Windows, instead of a homegroup?
I am trying to share a specific folder on my Windows 8 computer with my Windows 7 computer. They are both on the same network connected to the same router. The Windows 8 computer is connected through ethernet, while the Windows 7 computer is connected wirelessly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to 8.1 , if I try and access my routers web page to change some config settings , the browser (and I've tried 4 different ones) connects to the web interface REALLY REALLY slowly... we're talking 5-10 minutes just to show part of the menu UI and even then not all the graphics show.
I can connect to the same interface using my tablet and it's instant...
Under Windows 8.0 it worked just fine also...
General web browsing is fine as is internet access for gaming etc...
I play games on my computer and i have Windows 8 which came with the computer and it works fine. But when I play games online it will work for a while then it will drop me out of the game. And when i look at the bottom of taskbar it has the little disconnected symbol.
I am using the computer built in "802.11n Wireless LAN Card". After a few seconds it will reconnect.
I am sharing my internet connection with my roommates, but lately they have been using P2P to download stuff which uses almost all the internet speed available. I have set up QoS to limit their bandwidth in the main Asus wifi router which directly connects to the modem, it works great for a few days, but then it doesn't work anymore, I still get slow internet speed now. Since my flat has 2 wifi routers, one is the main and another one is set up with a different name but still connects to the main router via the ethernet cable a few metres away so that the wireless range is increased. Just for your information, the two routers are transmitting on different channel, if you think that might be the cause and they have different SSID.
Could it be possible that the QoS only works in the main wifi router and doesn't affect the other wifi router which my roommates also have access to it?
I have changed the default router password so I am sure that they have no access to the router's settings.
Yesterday I purchased a new Dell Laptop. In the setup and configuration the unit found my wireless network. I have two other PC's (not windows 8) two Kindles, two Cell phones and an IPAD on this router and all the Dell would say it it can't connect to this network. It won't ask for the passkey, it provides no additional information and I can't get online in my own network with this system. I can however log on to a neighbors unsecured network effortlessly.
I am using an old airlink 101 wireless router that has been trouble free for several years. I tried to log onto airlink for a support inquiry but they no longer provide support for this model.
I have a netgeat WNDR4500, I also have readyshare cloud installed on my home pc (HP pavilion elite x64 Win 8 pro) I also have it on my work pc (windows 7 pro Lenovo). I cannot seem to access my shared folder when logging in to ready share, it shows my device, but never pulls the shared folder. Is there something in the port forwarding setting that I may need to change?

I used "admin" as username and " password" as the password. But the page is not getting loaded. Its asking for the username and password again. My friend is able to log in to the same page with the same credentials in his windows 7 laptop. So i guess its the problem of OS.

I should add however that my network, 1 Windows 8, 3 XP, 1 Laptop with Windows 7, 1 laptop with Linux, all did work until recently, so I think it is one of the Windows 8 updates have screwed up the system.
At about the same time I also started receiving notifications from Microsoft that XP would no longer be supported after April, so maybe there is something intentional here.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got a new Windows 8 laptop, a Lenovo Y510p, and I've been having several wireless issues with it. Pretty early on my computer froze up so I had to force it to shut down. After resolving the issue, I was unable to load any websites, however a flush of the dns cache fixed the problem right up. Fast forward a few hours, and suddenly I can't connect to the router in my dorm room-I just suddenly lost my connection and now I can't reconnect.
My roommate has a router set up for our room connected to an internet jack in the wall. It is configured as WPA2-PSK. I usually connect to this when in the room, but now I can't-windows just says "can't connect to this network". There is wifi throughout the dorm already, which I can connect to just fine, however the signal isn't as strong.
