I've recently installed Windows 8 on an Asus X201E. There is an audible constant disk trashing, although the HDD LED doesn't blink & the Performance monitor in the task manager also doesn't indicate any excessive disk access (literally 0% when nothing is going on). What could cause this? Besides the annoying sound, I'm worried about the disk wearing out.

The new Windows 8 touch laptop I just got is running ridiculously slow. Apps take minutes to open sometimes because the disk is constantly being used by several processes, even when idle.
The main culprits showing in Task Manager are "Service host: Local system", "Windows Modules Installer Worker", and "Antimalware Service Executable". Between them they are using 97+% of the disk and about 50% CPU constantly. It's gotten a bit better since I uninstalled all the trialware garbage that came on it, including McAfee, which was a massive slowdown. I plan on just using Windows Defender for security but it still says it's turned off, could that be the problem?
But for real, I'm pretty sure McAfee slows down the system more than the viruses.
Asus Vivobook. It was running fine last night, but today it was a bit slow to respond. I eventually restarted it and it told me I have disk problems. Now I'm stuck on a black screen with the Asus logo that reads "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete."
It's been this way for multiple hours now. I'm going to leave it overnight and hope it repairs, but, if it doesn't, is there anyway to recover my files? I have some important stuff backed up online, but I haven't backed up in a bit over a month and I don't want to lose my files. Most forums tell me to reinstall Windows 8? Would that make me lose my files, though, and how can I do that if I can't get past this error page?
I have never been able to operation windows 8 on my desktop computer, always thought it was a hard drive issue 2 days ago I get a brand new HDD and SSD for main OS, and low and behold it is the same issue, every time I try to install windows 8 or 8.1 it either during or after the installation, it completely locks up, freezes, if I'm playing music it's stuck, can't move mouse, heck with my old hard drive, I literally pulled out my hard drive was looking at my hard drive in my hand and windows 8 on the screen, frozen, this seems too iffy to not be a coincidence, but I got windows 8 to work (magically), and when I open device manager it says my PCI lan controller driver is missing.
I went online and found it on gigabyte with my motherboard z68-d3-b3 and found the driver, tried installing it, FROZE, hard reset, tried installing again, FROZE, for as I went looking for a solution I came across an article that said do not update z68-d3-b3 bios to eufi, and of course I did about the time windows 8 came out, many people have had problems with the eufi update, but could this cause my computer to crash at completely random times? it's not my hard drives I know that for a fact, I took out my laptop HDD with windows 8.1 on it and I connected it to my desktop and it still froze, used 2 other HDD and 1 SSD with windows 8 and windows 8.1, I tried both pirated and legit copies, I have a key for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (just no CD) I am completely lost with this MOBO, windows 7 works perfectly fine zero problems.
Been experiencing seemingly random BSOD's for the past few weeks, and completely unable to solve the problem myself. It happens from a minute or two after startup to after 3 or 4 hours or working, and sometimes doesn't crash on intensive apps like Furmark.
I'm running a Lenovo Y400 with the newest Nvidia drivers, and have attempted rolling back and uninstalling with DDU but no success.
I have an ASUS Vivotab running Windows 8. I am seeing that the service process hits 100% disk usage from roughly 4:58PM - 5:04PM daily. I've made sure that my antivirus is't downloading updates or running during that time, same with Windows Update, Live Update, etc. How can I find what specific process is running during that time that is killing the machine given I know when to watch for it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI purchased an Asus x501a laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled at the beginning of the month. They sold me Nortons 360 which I installed. The laptop keeps freezing and if I look in the task manager the disk useage keeps reaching 100% every few seconds and lots of things aren't working properly; the internet connection keeps falling off, when using apps such as facebook it keeps freezing; internet pages are taking seconds to load instead of miliseconds. I can't believe this should be happening to a brand new laptop. Before I take it back I want to check whether it is actually a windows 8 problem (I suspect it is) as it uploaded 46 or more new updates to Windows 8 when I switched it on and these could potentially mean something else on the ASUS kit is outdated.
It is not a touch screen laptop (why would I buy one of those windows when I can successfully use my ipad and phone for this). The reason I bought a laptop is that I don't want touchscreen and just want an old fashioned computer to do use for work/other simple tasks. I will keep my ipad for social media use etc as the facebook app on windows 8 is designed for a touchscreen which I don't have! Maybe I should have bought something with Windows 7 on it??

An 3GB ISO which I copy from my HDD to an USB3.0 USB-stick gets a max speed of 25 mb per second. I have already tried everything I could think of, including the following:

EDIT1: A few months back, when the laptop was still running Windows 7, the read/write speeds were "normal", meaning that they were what you would expect from USB 3.0.
I have a POP3 email address (Tiscali) I have set it up on "outlook". I can send and receive Emails ok but cannot find an option to get a tone to sound when a new Email arrives.
I have looked at the Laptop's "Sounds" and found that the 2 items referring to Email Notifications are both set to use the Default sound. My volume is turned fully up. Sounds from Iplayer are ok.
I have Goggled for a solution but the methods suggested cannot work because the options are not viable.
I have an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. It replaces a motherboard that failed. I have moved the Win 7 image over to the new board using a "restore to other hardware" feature in a backup program. It did not work properly. I am not able to get some drivers to install. For various (and sufficient) reasons I really really don't want to do a clean install. When I first booted, it would not even boot until I used Win PE to repair the boot. Various squirrely things are still wrong. Like not being able to see more than one hard drive. Occasional crashes for no obvious reason.
For an SATA controller when I run update driver or running the Intel INF setup program provided by Asus I get a message:
7 series/C216 SATA AHCI controller 1E02 Also This operation requires an interactive windows station.
I have just run the Intel update program and it says it can't identify a device an I need to contact the board manufacturer.
An alternative I am considering is to install a Win 8 update over the Win 7 telling Win 8 to retain my programs, settings, and data. But I am not sure this will get me where I want to go. My major question about that is will the Win 8 installation be clever enough to use all of the driver files from Asus that I have downloaded (and I point it to) rather than installing something like the incorrect ones currently installed?
I wonder if there's a way to make my own voice audible in the speakers/headphones when using a microphone?
I also have RealTek HD Audiomanager installed, since I have an ASUS board.
Could this be done in Windows?
I have recently built a new computer and installed Windows 8. All was running fine (including USB devices such as iPhone, flash drive etc), however since upgrading to Windows 8.1, none of my USB devices are showing up at all. Oddly, the mouse and keyboard still work.
When I go into the BIOS, all my devices (iPhone, Flash drive, keyboard and mouse etc) all show up in there, so I'm guessing it's a driver/Windows 8.1 issue that I'm missing?

I have an Asus x202e with I3, Windows 8 64 Bits. The defect is that the battery does not detect. Here's what I did: I disconnected the battery, I pressed the power button 30 seconds and not fixed. I reset BIOS F2, F9 and F10 and again not repaired. I uninstalled the Microsoft ACPI method battery and nothing. Do you think that a BIOS update will fix the fault? Mention that no longer turn on the battery.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 64-Bit on it and I uninstalled AsusDVD after having some issues with it. After I did this my laptop no longer allowed me to play DVDs. Despite having Windows Media Player, which I know plays DVDs since I have it on my desktop.
Is there a way that I can change some settings to use Windows Media Player? When I open "Autoplay" Windows Media Player is not an option to play it on and there isn't anything else on my laptop that can play it. I tried a few different free DVD players, but none were able to play them for some reason.
How I can get Windows Media Player to play DVDs or suggest a free software that I can download that will play DVDs?
My HD usage is almost constantly at 100% making my brand new laptop pause when typing every few seconds.

I tried a clean retail install of windows 8 pro, and without any other installed programs problem existed.
There is no program using more that 0.1mb/sec, its just usage.

I did NOT notice this at all for the first month I had my new laptop.
The only thing that ever makes it better, is if the HD is being constantly accessed by a program, such as defrag - while defrag is running, my computer never pauses and it runs smooth as it should.
I tried Clean installs, turning off page file, turning off indexing. Is it a HW issue?
I'm experiencing problems with freezing and hanging with Windows 8.1 on a constant basis. The problem occurs in the browser, when switching between programs and during start up and close down.

It can't connect to the internet, or the local network. Windows says limited connection, but ping the router IP yields only lost packages. Solving the error with the automatic error solver, displays problems with the DNS.
The roommate says the connection has worked for a limited time, for about a 1/2 hour, but fell out from time to time.
He has tried to connect to our wireless router, a wireless n d-link dir615. It is set to WPA/WPA2 with AES cipher and PSK.The router runs the newest firmware available, which gives no issues for any other device in the house. (Including Iphones, android phones, old and new N-capable, and N-incapable laptops and desktops).
His PC has an almost unused Asus PCE N15 wireless adapter installed.He says it worked on a different network (He just moved in).
I have tried to give him a static IP and dns, both in windows, and get the router to assign one to him.
I have tried to give him an alternative DNS, e.g. OpenDNS.
I have tried to update his drivers, both the ones provided from Asus, but also one from realtek, since the NIC has a realtek chip on it.
I have an Asus P5QL VM DO montherboard in my homemade PC. This is an older system that I use for testing, so I put my Windows 8 install on it. I'm receiving constant BSODs, typically reporting BAD_POOL_HEADER and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
I've updated every driver I can think of (chipset, lan, usb, audio, video) as well as fully updating in windows update.
Memtest ran overnight finding no errors, and Western Digital's HDD utility reports no hard disk corruption.
I'm thinking either a bad driver, or some hardware failure that I can't nail down. My specs should be listed in my profile, with the addition of a 750w corsair PS and my HDD setup (AHCI, 1 crucial mx100 256gb SSD (primary), 1tb WD blue, and 1tb WD green as data drives).
Crash dumps should be attached, one may have driver verifier enabled.
Also, clean booting seems to be slightly more stable than a regular boot, so there's that.
Attempting to install windows 8.1 fails right at the end (after installing and setting up, reporting 0xC1900101 - 0x2003).

I have an ASUS S400CA running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) and I am having a major issue. When I click Fn + F5/F6 to increase or decrease the brightness, nothing is happening. The slider is stuck beyond a point and the brightness does not change regardless (it is stuck at the highest setting). View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus CM6730 PC, bought in October, which had Windows 8 installed on it.
Everything was fine, until I decided to install the upgrade to Windows 8.1.
After a week or so, my mouse started to freeze up randomly and the only way to log out of the PC was by holding the power button down for several seconds. The next day, I was working on the PC, took a phone call and the machine went into standby mode - but wouldn't come back on when I press a key / moved mouse.
At that point I decided to restore the machine back to factory settings. This was done successfully so I was back to Windows 8. However - my problems have got worse - and now I am at the stage where the PC wont even boot up in Safe Mode - the screen just goes black.
I have read up on a few sites and I believe it could anything from driver related - to a faulty motherboard.
My Q200E Asus laptop came with 4g of memory. I would like to add another 4g's to bring it up to 8g's. I can find no instructions for doing this and am not entirely sure if it can be done. I have removed the back cover and see no memory sticks at all.
