Hardware Drivers :: BOOTMGR Is Missing - Press Ctrl Alt Del To Restart
May 31, 2013I have an Asus PC running W864, I have a Seagate 2 TB Harddrive and I have two 2TB Hard drive connected by USB.
Sometimes when I leave my PC running while doing other things I come back to it after a few hours and the PC is showing a black screen the message "BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart" This happens about once or twice a month, I can see no pattern or event that triggers it.
When I press Ctrl Alt Del the PC restarts and comes back to the same message.
If I reboot to a bootable repair disk or Windows 8 install disk my OS and Hard drive are not found, but my USB connected drives are.
I have to turn of my PC completely, I take out the plug, and switch it back on, sometimes it reboots properly to the Start screen but sometimes it just goes back to the black screen with the BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart message.
What seems to work always is if I turn off the 2 USB attached drives turn off the PC then restart, that works 100% of the time as far as I can recall.
I suspect my had drive is faulty but I have taken the PC to the supplier and their tests show all is okay, even when I run Seatools for Windows it checks out 100%.
Seatools for DOS does not find the Harddrive, I believe this is a W7/8 issue.
I have repaired the BOOTMGR using the process shown here, How to fix bootmgr is missing in Windows 8 But since Windows 8 disk found the Harddrive I suspect the PC would have booted okay anyway.
Active SMART says it is okay and Event Viewer in Windows 8 does not show any related errors.

Mar 30, 2014I needed to ask as i've come from XP, when i installed 8.1 it installed drivers for my mobo so i had sound/net etc... and for my gpu aswell. Should i install the drivers from the manufacturer? Such as the realtek audio/lan/etc... and also my amd gpu?
If i were to install the Gpu driver would i just download it and install it with microsofts one there? And with the motherboard? Should i leave them there as i have sound/net etc... (haven't tried gaming yet)

Mar 26, 2014I am trying to install a graphics card in my desktop pc. The heat sink on the card blocks the SATA port that the DVD drive is plugged into (SATA1) so I've switched the DVD drive to SATA2. The drive is now showing as connected to port2 in the BIOS, but in windows (Windows 8 64-bit) it isn't detecting the DVD drive at all? I've seen other posts about this on the internet suggesting to add a line to the registry, but I've done that and it doesn't solve the problem.

Jun 3, 2014Had drive problems with PC so got new SSD drives and a Hybrid drive.All new drives so did tortuous route install win7 - upgrade to win 8.0 all worked then started acting up. My tech support worked on it for 2 days and gave up said I should backup and do a clean install from start. So I did.
Not yet put any backup files on so only operating system and devices (printer, wireless keyboard/mouse, wireless headset and 3webcams ( One Pluscom and two PCline ) checked device manager and found cameras with yellow exclamation mark and checked properties and saw this webcam.JPG . Download, install and do a reboot and see what happens.

In NVidia website it has mentioned that all the oem model should download from manufacture like hp, dell website only.
IF you check driver update for this model for windows vista 32bit you will notice original driver like keyboard, nvidia, etc.

So my queries is that i have recently installed windows 8.1 and i wanted these original files to be installed but dont know which one to pick from vista drivers or windows 7 drivers? but windows 7 drivers are latest when compare with vista. Or should I download nvidia drivers from nvidia website? and also same goes with realtek audio driver from realtek website?

Jan 17, 2014I am unsure whether I should enable "Automatically get device drivers, apps, and info for new devices" when installing Windows 8 Pro?
What exactly will it do?
If I enable this, will Windows then automatically install software packages/drivers from the manufacturer, like for example the Logitech Setpoint software for their keyboards and mouse and similar software for other devices? I don't want or need that. Or will it behave like in Windows 7?
On my other PC with Windows 7 I see in Windows Update that there are a couple of optional updates, including that Logitech stuff, as well as some driver for a BenQ monitor I have and also nvidia video drivers. This kind of stuff I don't want or need installed automatically as important updates in Windows Update - so I am worried if enabling this automatic driver stuff in Windows 8 is different than Windows 7? Meaning that it will get installed secretly/automatically?
However, it's fine that Windows finds them so I can manually go and check if I want to install any of it.
The key is that the updates are optional in Windows 7, but I have seen a few people complain about Windows 8 installing stuff like video drivers and mouse drivers automatically.

Jun 22, 2013I have an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. It replaces a motherboard that failed. I have moved the Win 7 image over to the new board using a "restore to other hardware" feature in a backup program. It did not work properly. I am not able to get some drivers to install. For various (and sufficient) reasons I really really don't want to do a clean install. When I first booted, it would not even boot until I used Win PE to repair the boot. Various squirrely things are still wrong. Like not being able to see more than one hard drive. Occasional crashes for no obvious reason.
For an SATA controller when I run update driver or running the Intel INF setup program provided by Asus I get a message:
7 series/C216 SATA AHCI controller 1E02 Also This operation requires an interactive windows station.
I have just run the Intel update program and it says it can't identify a device an I need to contact the board manufacturer.
An alternative I am considering is to install a Win 8 update over the Win 7 telling Win 8 to retain my programs, settings, and data. But I am not sure this will get me where I want to go. My major question about that is will the Win 8 installation be clever enough to use all of the driver files from Asus that I have downloaded (and I point it to) rather than installing something like the incorrect ones currently installed?

Nov 14, 2013So figured out my Windows 8 install was corrupt so I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.
Formatted my drives and proceeded to install Windows 8 successfully. While installing all of my drivers every single one of them installed perfectly fine besides IntelRST.
It seems to time out every damn time. I tried to manually install it via device manager and it times out as well. I even reformatted and re installed Windows 8 still no go.
The crazy thing is when I try to manually install it via device manager it times out but the driver shows the correct date so I'm sort of at a loss right now.

Jul 15, 2014Recently I bought a new lap top and installed Windows 8.1
I have an issue with the Mouse/s. I tried 2 different mouses and I encountered the same problem with both of them, so I know it's not a mouse problem. Note that both of these mouses work perfectly on my other/older/Windows 7 and previously Windows XP lap top, so it's not a mouse issue. It's either a driver problem or something else.
I have tried all 3 USB ports I got and it does the same thing.
When I turn on the lap top, if the mouse is plugged or unplugged and I plug it afterwards, it doesn't work. If however I turn on the lap top, plug in the mouse, and the restart the lap top, when it restarts the mouse works fine all up until the lap top is turned off again. And then to get it to work again I have to turn on the lap top, with the mouse plugged, or plug the mouse after it's turned on, then restart the lap top, and then the mouse works fine.
Apparently, this is not very convenient. It's a major inconvenience.
p.s I never had this issue before on any other PC computer or lap top, whether it was Windows XP or Windows 7. So it's either a Windows 8.1 issue or the new lap top issue, or a driver issue.

Mar 12, 2013I have a windows to go installation in a large external hdd, so I have made a second partition to use as data storage.
Now, when I insert the disk on my "normal" windows installation I would expect the data partition to be available... Instead I have to assign a letter to be able to use it.
The disk appears to be online and once assigned a letter you can unplug it and plug it again without having to do the letter assignment again.
BUT, every time I restart the pc I have to do it all over again.

Jan 4, 2014I bought myself new SSD disc. I wanted to make that SSD primary so I can get rid off my old 70GB HDD disk. I used software to clone system (windows 8.1) from HDD to SSD. Everything worked perfectly to the point when I wanted to start the system. I noticed that my second HDD (with 1TB for data etc.) was set in bios with boot priority(1.) and it should have that missing bootmgr. Well I unpluged my HDD with windows and the second HDD and went to BIOS. I set boot priroity for my SSD and when I wanted to go to windows it showed me "Bootmgr is missing ...". Well so I decided to plug my second HDD back and went to windows.
I used Microsoft Store to copy my windows installation to my USB flash disc so I can repair it with that. After restart I set my usb flash disc as primary/boot priority so it will be booted at first and I can repair it, but it always (seems like) skip that USB and run my SSD and my system start up, so I dont have any chance to go that windows screen with options to repair and so on. If I hit F8 immediately after my USB flash disc boot it shows me some options, but those aren't useful for fixing my problems with bootmgr.
So now I'm in state when I can't boot my system without the USB flash disc. If I unplug it and restart the computer it shows me "problem with bootmgr is missing...".

New Dell, clean install:
- Reinstalled Dell Factory Image
- Updated to Windows 8.1
- Installed Office 2013
- Added BUILT-IN Windows Driver for LaserJet 5P/5MP
- Added Epson driver for Windows 8 64 bit from Epson website
Neither printer shows in Devices and Printers.
Rebooted. Stopped and started print spooler. Checked registry and all printers, including the new ones, appear to be listed in all the correct registry areas.
Open Notepad, select Print, both printers are listed.
Both printers print. When in Notepad, select Print, I can right click on the printer, select properties, and control the printer, print test pages, change drivers and preferences, etc.
The ONLY PROBLEM is the printers do not show in Devices and Printers, so I cannot control them from there.

Nov 10, 2013I get a black screen after the loading screen when I boot up my computer. To fix this problem, I decided to do a dirty install, but I stumbled upon a problem. I have 2 Crucial 64GB SSDs that I put together as one, making my C: Disk, but I didn't see it in the Volume List. I only see what was Drive D:, my 1TB Seagate HDD, which, supposedly, took my SSDs' place as Drive C:.
I've unplugged the SSDs and booted up with only one plugged in, and made the Primary Boot Device "Removable Disk", but when I boot up, I get an error message saying "BOOTMGR is missing". The same thing happened when I did the same with the other SSD. It can be deduced that both of the SSDs have to work together as a whole to function.
Then, I unplugged the 1TB HDD and tried again. When I did a chkdsk for Drive C:, I got a message saying, "The system cannot find the drive specified". From this, it is obvious that the 2 SSDs (which are the actual C: Drives) aren't being detected by my computer, but the 1TB (Drive D: ) is being detected.
After uncovering this problem, I think this may be the fault that is giving me the black screen after boot.

Jul 17, 2014I have a new desktop. A dell Precision T7610 with win 8.1 pro x64. I installed APC Powerchute personal edition last weekend. Went out of town and last night came home and noticed I had no power icon on the task bar. I am not sure if this started right away or not. I do like to change the power plan from balanced to high power depending on what I am doing. I can do through control panel, but I figure I should fix why I do not have the icon on the task bar now.
I tired uninstalling powerchute and it failed. I then re-installed and installed. Now power icon.
In the task bar, customize icons, and then turn systems icons on and off, the power icon is set to off but I cannot set it to on. Under customize icons, if I try to set to show icons, it says it is not active.
unfortunately I do not have a restore point before last night. Not sure if I never had any (new machine) or if some how they got deleted.

Nov 6, 2013So I switched over to the SATA setup via BIOS in attempt to improve my SSD performance. I knew I had to reinstall on the SSD but my I am not able to read or even format my second HDD that was also in AHCI. Is there any way to (would be awesome if) read, or at least format my drive so I can use it again? I tried disk management and other options within the OS and couldn't format.
