Hardware Drivers :: SSDs Aren't Being Detected - BOOTMGR Is Missing
Nov 10, 2013
I get a black screen after the loading screen when I boot up my computer. To fix this problem, I decided to do a dirty install, but I stumbled upon a problem. I have 2 Crucial 64GB SSDs that I put together as one, making my C: Disk, but I didn't see it in the Volume List. I only see what was Drive D:, my 1TB Seagate HDD, which, supposedly, took my SSDs' place as Drive C:.
I've unplugged the SSDs and booted up with only one plugged in, and made the Primary Boot Device "Removable Disk", but when I boot up, I get an error message saying "BOOTMGR is missing". The same thing happened when I did the same with the other SSD. It can be deduced that both of the SSDs have to work together as a whole to function.
Then, I unplugged the 1TB HDD and tried again. When I did a chkdsk for Drive C:, I got a message saying, "The system cannot find the drive specified". From this, it is obvious that the 2 SSDs (which are the actual C: Drives) aren't being detected by my computer, but the 1TB (Drive D: ) is being detected.
After uncovering this problem, I think this may be the fault that is giving me the black screen after boot.

I bought myself new SSD disc. I wanted to make that SSD primary so I can get rid off my old 70GB HDD disk. I used software to clone system (windows 8.1) from HDD to SSD. Everything worked perfectly to the point when I wanted to start the system. I noticed that my second HDD (with 1TB for data etc.) was set in bios with boot priority(1.) and it should have that missing bootmgr. Well I unpluged my HDD with windows and the second HDD and went to BIOS. I set boot priroity for my SSD and when I wanted to go to windows it showed me "Bootmgr is missing ...". Well so I decided to plug my second HDD back and went to windows.
I used Microsoft Store to copy my windows installation to my USB flash disc so I can repair it with that. After restart I set my usb flash disc as primary/boot priority so it will be booted at first and I can repair it, but it always (seems like) skip that USB and run my SSD and my system start up, so I dont have any chance to go that windows screen with options to repair and so on. If I hit F8 immediately after my USB flash disc boot it shows me some options, but those aren't useful for fixing my problems with bootmgr.
So now I'm in state when I can't boot my system without the USB flash disc. If I unplug it and restart the computer it shows me "problem with bootmgr is missing...".

I have an Asus PC running W864, I have a Seagate 2 TB Harddrive and I have two 2TB Hard drive connected by USB.
Sometimes when I leave my PC running while doing other things I come back to it after a few hours and the PC is showing a black screen the message "BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart" This happens about once or twice a month, I can see no pattern or event that triggers it.
When I press Ctrl Alt Del the PC restarts and comes back to the same message.
If I reboot to a bootable repair disk or Windows 8 install disk my OS and Hard drive are not found, but my USB connected drives are.
I have to turn of my PC completely, I take out the plug, and switch it back on, sometimes it reboots properly to the Start screen but sometimes it just goes back to the black screen with the BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart message.
What seems to work always is if I turn off the 2 USB attached drives turn off the PC then restart, that works 100% of the time as far as I can recall.
I suspect my had drive is faulty but I have taken the PC to the supplier and their tests show all is okay, even when I run Seatools for Windows it checks out 100%.
Seatools for DOS does not find the Harddrive, I believe this is a W7/8 issue.
I have repaired the BOOTMGR using the process shown here, How to fix bootmgr is missing in Windows 8 But since Windows 8 disk found the Harddrive I suspect the PC would have booted okay anyway.
Active SMART says it is okay and Event Viewer in Windows 8 does not show any related errors.

My windows update, windows defender and lots of other programs including Vistart start menu refuse to work. I run the Windowsupdatediagnostic download and it tells me the SFC Output is corrupted or missing. Recently the BITS wasn't working but for some reason found the windows events log was disabled in services. I went to black vipers site and reset all of the services to a standard or safe setting. Yet I cant get anything to work. Ive been running the sfc /scannow in command prompt and it says it found problems but was unable to fix them. It says to check the log files, but when i go to open them they refuse to open and say i don't have administration privileges???
I suddenly got BITS working recently and i swore that would have fixed everything but to no avail. I am afraid to have to to a factory refresh but the problem is I foolishly listened to microsoft suggestion in the store to upgrade this from windows 8 to 8.1 therefore it automatically deletes the windows 8.0 partition on the computer thereby erasing its original operating system with cd key....
I have heard of ones doing a factory reset or refresh and finding since that upgrade they cant get it running without them purchasing it....
I have done a system restore, but the last system restore was a month ago and unfortunately that was when the system was exactly the same as this.
So right now i need to try every possible avenue I can take and want to see if its possible to do a factory refresh without it freaking out because the cd key on the bottom of the computer is for a windows 8.0 and this is the useless upgraded 8.1. This is a Toshiba C55-A 5300 laptop

it appears that windows cannot recognize my dvd drive after i used the option in the general menu to remove everything and reinstall windows,
When I check it in the device manager, it reports the dvd drive as hidden, and need to connect it to solve the problem, but i am pretty positive the dvd drive is connected since i can press the button and the tray will eject (and if i insert a disk i can hear it spinning), check the two attached images for this,
i have tried everything, like updating the firmware (it only worked once when the dvd drive was detected, for otherwise the update app would just request you to connect the drive to update it), it didn't work (in this case, i can see it in windows explorer, but cannot push the button to eject the disk tray), use the reg. fix found on the internet, resetting windows again (after the first reset, the dvd drive can be detected but i cannot burn an iso disk, so i reset it again, took about 20 minutes, now the drive is just simply not visible in explorer), none of them worked,
the laptop is samsung series 3, this one, NP355V5C - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG
it used to have this problem (dvd not detected, or push button not responding) before, but usually solves on its own after an reboot, unlike this time which is completely screwed up and i am at my wits end,

No USB device seems to be getting detected on my machine when I plug in a flash drive or an external hdd I get the distinctive sound from my speakers that an USB device is plugged in but nothing is showing up in "My Computer". I went through the event logs and found that Windows is failing to load the USB device (check image in attachment logs.jpeg). Recently I installed iTunes, so I though it might be causing this problem but I uninstalled it even then the problem persists. I don't want to format my machine just because of this small problem. Is this a driver conflict ? How do I find out why windows is all of a sudden failing to load the USB devices ? I have uploaded a copy of the saved logs detailing this failure(logs.zip).

I run Windows in the following configuration:
I have an SSD and a normal HDD. The Windows system itself runs on the SSD for faster boot-up, and all my user data is stored on the HDD. I recently installed Linux as a dual boot option, but due to issues with UEFI and Legacy BIOS settings, I decided to uninstall my Linux. My Linux was similarly configured, with /boot residing on the SSD and the rest of it residing on an ext4-formatted partition on my HDD.
I uninstalled Linux using the boot-repair livedisc, and I can boot just fine into Windows 8.1. However, now my Windows Data partition on the HDD cannot be accessed. On boot, it doesn't even mount, and links to my Downloads or Documents folders are broken.
The Disk Management tool lists the Data partition as an EFI System Partition, when it was previously just a normal Primary NTFS partition. GParted detects the partition as an NTFS one. DiskPart also indicates the partition is hidden. Mounting the partition works fine using DiskPart but I cannot access it as it throws an access denied error, and says I do not have permission to access the drive. I have tried changing the security options in the security tab to give me full control, but to no avail. I can use CMD to access it though, and view things, but I cannot seem to move or copy data out of it. I have tried using the convert utility in CMD to convert the EFI partition to NTFS (EFI is FAT32, IIRC) but it says that the partition is already NTFS.
How can I fix this or at least enter the partition and backup my data before performing a format and restore? What data should I provide to get proper support?

Ok, after playing around a bit with the new 8.1 some hardware issues come into my way: My Soundblaster X-FI didn't work anymore, no new driver provided by Creative Labs - replaced by working sound onboard.
But now my Sony Cybershot DSC-W70 camera isn't detected anymore, no drive letter is assigned and since I have no cardreader I can't access the pics. Troubleshooting says the problem can not be fixed. Sony doesn't provide particular drivers for it and reinstalling the Intel ICH9 driver didn't work. Under Windows 8 it worked like a charm, 8.1 seems not to like much of my hardware.

So I ordered two 1 TB Samsung 840 Evo SSD and am waiting for delivery in 10 days.
Currently, I have a 256 GB LiteOn SSD + 1 TB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD
The way I have them currently setup
C: (256 GB SSD) over provisioned by 30% here I have the OS installed, programs, and 2 games
D : (1 TB HDD): has my dropbox folder, docs, pics, music, videos, download folder
So what would you recommend now? keeping my SSD partitioned into 1 750 GB (after over provisioning) seems a bit too much right?
I really am confused on what is best, to split the first SSD into C and D and put my dropbox and other folders on it and leave the 2nd SSD empty to prolong its life? or put everything on the 2nd SSD?
also, I should OP both SSDs by 30% right?
I am gonna enable RAPID on the first one since I have 32 GB of RAM

Since upgrading my HP DV6T7000-CTO from Windows 7 to Win 8 and now 8.1I have had an intermittent issue where the my wifi/bluetooth adapter is detected, until a restart, and then afterwards, is no longer detected. I have a Intel centrino wireless N 2230 which is both wifi and bluetooth. I cannot connect to wifi, nor is the bluetooth detected. Additionally, the wifi-radio button on my laptop, will not turn on (red is off, white is on). Sometimes I can temporarily fix the issue by shutting down, disconnecting the adapter from my laptop, reseating it, and then rebooting. This does not always work though.
I have tried the latest drivers from Intel as well as tried removing those and just installing whatever Windows update thinks is best. I have also updated the Bios to the latest, but to no avail. I have even replaced the adapter with a new adapter but the same model and that did not fix the issue either.

The same system also has winXP and win7, which detect the drive.
The interesting part is the drive was used to install windows 8.
Why is windows 8 not detecting the drive?

I have an Asus x202e with I3, Windows 8 64 Bits. The defect is that the battery does not detect. Here's what I did: I disconnected the battery, I pressed the power button 30 seconds and not fixed. I reset BIOS F2, F9 and F10 and again not repaired. I uninstalled the Microsoft ACPI method battery and nothing. Do you think that a BIOS update will fix the fault? Mention that no longer turn on the battery.

At first I thought maybe it was the one movie(battleship), but after subsequent testing with different dvd movies, I have to ask, is it normal for the dvd drive to sometimes not recognize theres a disc loaded?
I've got cyberlink power dvd 9.0, which has a dvd movie playback codec.. so its not a software issue.
I've also got vlc media player which comes with a dvd movie playback codec, so again, not a software issue
Could this be my drive showing signs of premature impending failure on a machine just under a year old? or is this windows stuffing up and not recognizing theres a disc loaded?

Late last Fall I bought a new Desktop, an HP H81414, with Windows 8 installed with the intention of installing Windows 7 on an SSD. I migrated Window 8 to an SSD, removed that from the system, installed new SSD and put Windows 7 on it. Both worked fine. I wound up with 2 SSD's. capable of running on the EFI BIOS machine with Secure Boot turned off. I later bought a new laptop with Windows 8. I found the Win 8 with Classic Shell to be very acceptable.
What I would like to do now ,if possible, is to mount both SSD's in the HP case and switch to either one of them at boot.

Many of my live tiles (Weather, Fitness, Music, Games) don't show anything aside from their logos. They are turned on. I've probably quadruple checked them at this point. For troubleshooting, I have:
Verified that those tiles are turned on.
Verified that the time service is running.
Verified that all the apps and/or their licenses are synced.
Uninstalled/reinstalled the apps.
Removed McAfee (replaced it with Avast free).
Run the UI diagnostic/repair tool that you guys have in one of the long stickied threads.
Verified that they're set to animate via appearance and performance settings.
It looks like the tiles are receiving data, as the Weather app currently has a little 'i' icon in the bottom right hand corner, and there is a weather alert in my area. It's just that there's no temperature/background. It's just the blue tile with white sun. Very odd.
Refreshing this computer is not an option, as I use it for work as well as general computing use.

Why does every new O/S decide to remove undesired drivers and software? Same thing happened when moving from XP to Vista, and once you had Vista you sure had to get out of it!
Win 8 Pro N has physically deleted 3 multimedia controller drivers;
1. Type: Other unit, Mfg: Unknown, Location: PCI-bus 1, unit 0, function 0
2. Type: Other unit, Mfg: Unknown, Location: PCI-bus 1, unit 2, function 0
3. Type: Other unit, Mfg: Unknown, Location: On Microsoft ACPI-compliant system
Also, why hasn't Microsoft Fixit 50548 been adapted for Win 8 (i e possibillity to print picture or graphics to printer by right-clicking on file, then left-klick on Print on Menu that appeared. Also works to list contents of a drive on a printer output.

New printers do not display in Windows 8.1 Devices and Printers (no icon):
New Dell, clean install:
- Reinstalled Dell Factory Image
- Updated to Windows 8.1
- Installed Office 2013
- Added BUILT-IN Windows Driver for LaserJet 5P/5MP
- Added Epson driver for Windows 8 64 bit from Epson website
Neither printer shows in Devices and Printers.
Rebooted. Stopped and started print spooler. Checked registry and all printers, including the new ones, appear to be listed in all the correct registry areas.
Open Notepad, select Print, both printers are listed.
Both printers print. When in Notepad, select Print, I can right click on the printer, select properties, and control the printer, print test pages, change drivers and preferences, etc.
The ONLY PROBLEM is the printers do not show in Devices and Printers, so I cannot control them from there.

I have a new desktop. A dell Precision T7610 with win 8.1 pro x64. I installed APC Powerchute personal edition last weekend. Went out of town and last night came home and noticed I had no power icon on the task bar. I am not sure if this started right away or not. I do like to change the power plan from balanced to high power depending on what I am doing. I can do through control panel, but I figure I should fix why I do not have the icon on the task bar now.
I tired uninstalling powerchute and it failed. I then re-installed and installed. Now power icon.
In the task bar, customize icons, and then turn systems icons on and off, the power icon is set to off but I cannot set it to on. Under customize icons, if I try to set to show icons, it says it is not active.
unfortunately I do not have a restore point before last night. Not sure if I never had any (new machine) or if some how they got deleted.

I am trying to install a graphics card in my desktop pc. The heat sink on the card blocks the SATA port that the DVD drive is plugged into (SATA1) so I've switched the DVD drive to SATA2. The drive is now showing as connected to port2 in the BIOS, but in windows (Windows 8 64-bit) it isn't detecting the DVD drive at all? I've seen other posts about this on the internet suggesting to add a line to the registry, but I've done that and it doesn't solve the problem.
