Dell :: Windows 8.1 Update Fails Because Of Data Protection Access
Oct 18, 2013
When trying to update to 8.1 through the store, it tells me I need to uninstall the Dell Data Protection Access program first before continuing with the update. I've done that (I removed all parts: Access, Middleware, and Drivers), it's no longer showing up in my Installed programs list, yet when I try and continue the Windows 8.1 update, I get the same message.

I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine.
He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing every few seconds that was rendering the laptop almost unusable.
I managed to stop that by disabling automatic updates. When I attempted a manual update I got the message :
Windows could not search for new updates: Error Found Code 80070BC9
Other times it would say it needed to be restarted and would go into a restart loop that was generally
Restart one - no message
Restart two - configuring updates - 33%, 67%, 100%
Restart three - failed to configure updates - reverting - restarting
Then would go to the normal login screen
I tried SFC /Scannow which seemed to work and say a restart is needed to implement changes but then fails on restart
DISM didn't work when attempting to run it from the machine but got to 100% when I ran it from my own Windows 8 install disk but then failed and needed a restart to undo the changes.
I also tried a repair and a restore of the current Windows installation but got : Error Code: 80070490 both times
The laptop didn't come with an install disk or serial so it seems restoring it from external media may be out of the question?

My problem is that my computer no longer is able see Windows 8.1 on bootup. I get a "Loading OS".... message and nothing happens.
Before this happened, I reset my computer from Windows with the intent to change a BIOS setting for the CPU fan and an Windows update was applied on reboot. Windows (apparently) installed the update and then I got to the login screen. At this point, instead of logging into Windows, I hit the reset button to make the BIOS change. After doing this, when I tried to boot again, Windows would even begin to load and I got the "Loading OS" message immediately. Is it possible that Windows did not finish installing the update even though I was at the login screen for Windows 8.1?
I then booted from the USB flash drive with Windows 8 install files (not 8.1... I upgraded from 8 to 8.1). I went into the repair option and then I got the message that no repairs could be found or were needed. (Interestingly now when I try the repair option, the computer automatically reboots so the repair option appears to be very broken now.)
Next, I tried to see if my disks were working and they seem to be. Attached is a screenshot when I list the volumes. C: drive is a HDD data drive without Windows. D: drive appears to be some sort of system restore partition (as far as I understand). F: drive is the SSD with Windows installed on it. I can navigate through all directories fine on the SSD and the drive seems healthy. (E: drive is the USB drive.) When I unhook the data drive, all the letters get shifted up one and this does not seem to be a factor in reviving Windows. Are the drive letters important? I find it odd that the SDD does not show up as C drive with or without the data drive installed.
I tried the sfc /scannow option in offline but I cannot get it to run. I believe that I am entering the letters correctly (and I have tried different variations). Please check if I am not typing this in correctly given my drive letters.---How do I get this to run?
I also tried to apply the Windows System Restore option on my flash drive, I seemingly was able to restore to a restore point set this morning. However, Windows is still not found at bootup at all.
At this point, I'm at a complete loss on how to proceed short of reinstalling Windows. Other options from the Windows 8 repair screen seem to result in loss of programs or data.
For the record, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3. I tried restore some BIOS settings to no effect.

So I had to do a System Repair thing where Windows would repair itself and removing all my apps but keep my documents, photos and music etc. So I was reinstalling every program again and also wanted to install the updates.
But I ran into 0x800f0922 error code and I couldnt install them. (I run Windows 8.1 Pro) I was trying to install Adobe Photoshop but couldnt continue cuz .NET framework 3.5 was required. But after trying to manually download + install I got the same error (0x800f0922). I've tried almost every cmd command but couldnt fix it.
I just reinstalled Windows and tried installing the updates again, but same thing. I cannot install any update at all.

Recently my Samsung laptop has been getting kicked of my house's WiFi. The computer will power up normally and connect to the WiFi, but as soon as I try to use the WiFi to access the internet the connection fails.Typically this only occurs when other devices are connected to the same WiFi. As soon as the other decieves are taken of the WiFi the computer is able to access the internet again. I have tried updating all my drivers and still nothing.

Just installed Win 8 in VMware today.
15 updates installed successfully.
A few hours later, Windows Defender KB2267602, definition 1.125.4350, 59.7 MB update failed to installed.
Error code 8050A003
Found something strange. I opened the View Updates history, and I found out that the update was installed successfully when it was offered the first time. A few hours late, same update was offered again, and this time it failed to install.

I have a brand new Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8. I did my initial software load and wanted to create a system image. The image fails with error code 0x80780119. This is the sequence I ran:
1) Control Panel
2) Windows 7 File Recovery
3) Create a system image
4) On a hard disk (External hard drive selected with 1.36 TB free space)
5) Program states that the following drives will be backed up without allowing me to add or remove drives (EFI System Partition, OS(C:)(System, and WINRETOOLS(System). I hit "start backup"
6) Create a system image box opens and it starts to run the process and then errors out and says the backup failed. The error message says there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location and it lists error code 0x80780119.
I believe it's not a problem with the destination drive where the final system image will be created. It has to be a problem with one of the partitions on the one and only hard drive inside the machine. Using Disk Management I can see the following partitions on the harddrive:
500MB EFI System Partition
40MB OEM Partition
500MB Recovery Partition
1854.75GB NTFS
7.12GB Recovery Partition

I finally got Windows 8 installed on my Dell M4600 dual boot with the Win 7 install. This is my business laptop so I needed to maintain full functions to Win 7 (I will completely migrate to 8 in the future) and ensure I could continue to work with it. I have two SSDs: Drive 0 is a 2.5" 256 GB used for data as d:. Drive 1 (this is how the bios designates them) was originally a 128GB MSATA SSD. I cloned this to a newer 240GB SSD to provide more room for the two OSs (and provide a good fail safe). With the clone I cleared the Dell recovery partitions and added the partition for Win 8. Currently I have some wasted space at the front but I will sort that out in the future. It has taken a week to get Win 8 up and running properly (tracking down drivers, getting the fingerprint scanner to work etc) but it seems to be stable and I have started to use it. Now to the problems:
1. The boot screen is the old Win 7 type (not really a problem by itself). I have used EasyBCD to adjust the default to Win 8. If I do a "restart" from 8 and then select 7 no problem. On the other hand, any restart to 8 brings up the MS flag and twirling thing and stops. I need to power down and start back up. No problem if I shutdown and then restart. I've been working on figuring out how the whole process works and I suspect the problem has to do with the switching drive letters depending on which OS is started and/or the Resume parameters in the BCD. Additionally, during all the hassle with installing Win 8 the boot loader is on the Win 7 partition. I'm hesitant to start using BCDedit on this laptop as I would prefer not to mess anything up. I also will not go through the hassle of re-installing Win 8 again - 3 or 4 times was enough.
2. At some point I will delete the Win 7 partition and expand the space for the Win 8 (I'll need to use some third party tools to do this). My concern is that the boot loader is on the Win 7 partition so how to move it to the Win 8 partition if possible.
I've attached two screen shots for the disk management status (win 7 an 8) and attachedoutput form BCDedit /enum all for both OSs.

My Windows 8 is corrupted on my VAIO Sony Laptop, so I tried to install Ubuntu-12.04.2 to access my data. I didn't get very far, however, because after I selected to boot from 'internal optical drive' and 'enabled' for 'secure boot' in the UEFI, and put the Ubuntu CD in, the screen went black. Now, I can't get it to switch on again at all nor can I get the CD out of the drive. When I press the 'assist' button to boot through UEFI or the power button to boot normally, the power and battery lights illuminate for the amount of time I'm holding either button down but nothing else happens. It's a new laptop - model SVE151G13M - that I bought in Germany very recently but can't get fixed under warranty because I'm currently in South Africa and the warranty is not valid here.

I have tried updating my Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit, upgraded from Windows 8 Pro) with the new "Update 1" (KB2919355) but it always fails with ERROR code 8007005 (or 80073712).
What I have tried do to fix:
Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and cleans Windows update history metadata info)DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails
There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...

P.S Dont suggest anything like "Enable UAC" or create another user because when i click on it nothing happens.

I have a new XPS8700. I have been unable to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the MS Store. My first problem was a lack of Windows updates, which I did, and now I can see the 8.1 upgrade in the store. I can also download updates to other aps.
My remaining problem is a continual notice every time I hit download that I need to first log into an account with admin access. Best I can tell, this and other forums have shown me how to add Admin capability with the Command prompt. I even created a second account and did the same thing. Within the User Summary screen within control panel, both USers show "administrator". Yet I still cannot get access
I have tried "net user administrator /active:yes" as well as tried same with swapping my name for administrator
The actual "administrator" user cannot do anything within the App Store. That appears to be what is supposed to happen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 660s bought last December. It has Windows 8 64 bit and has Internet Explorer 10.
My issue is the following: The computer works fine, but when I go to my home page MSN from either the desktop or metro screen, it opens the non Windows 8 version of Internet Explorer, not the MSN for Windows 8 version. It has been like this since we purchased in December. It's frustrating because we cannot take advantage of the new IE look.
I have talked with Dell often. I have researched widely but have not found an answer.
I have reset the homepage and several other processes, but none work. All updates are current.
It is possible to insert a URL address different from the Dell default to reach "MSN for Windows 8"? I'm hoping not to have to purge the entire system and begin again.

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 8. It is 3 months old.
I have lost my admin rights to the computer - I cannot make changes. Therefore, I cannot do a system restore.
I tried booting up in safe mode and turning on the admin rights via command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active:yes". It tell me 'access is denied'. I think it said "error code 5".
It may or may not be coincidence but I had installed Classic Shell a week before this problem occurred.

Today I noticed that I could not access the Internet on my Toshiba laptop. It is not the computer I use everyday, so I did not need to get on the 'Net. The last thing I remember doing was Using the Shutdown and install updates command.
To remedy I had to use a Restore point. I used the one for May before the updates. Now there is no problem.
I use Chrome exclusively.
