I recently purchased a DVP8 and I love this thing. Problem is, it suffers from wifi issues in that once it goes to sleep, the wifi automatically goes to "limited" and I need to retoggle the wifi setting to get it connected. I've tried all kinds of fixes - uninstall windows updates and reinstalling drivers, but to no avail.
So I basically said screw it, and set "sleep mode" to never on the power management option, and no more wifi issues. Seems like the wifi doesn't reactive properly when coming out to sleep mode. My question is - will this damage the tablet in the long run? In terms of battery life, I would think the main factor is the screen on time. I can just turn the screen off with a tap of the power button. Is there really that big of a difference?
How difficult would it be to dual boot / put Ubuntu on the Dell Venue 8 Pro as a secondary os?
Would grub work on this tab?
How stable would it be?
Is there any chance of dualbooting Dell Venue 8 Pro with Windows 8 and Android? I like Windows 8 but would also like to be able to use Android on this awesome tablet.If not dual boot, is there any other way of using Android as virtual machine or something that provides full touch and other sensor's support?

I can access the settings and set a PIN for login, but when I unlock the screen it only allows a password to be put in.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had about 5 crashes in the last month. Below are 2 of them from the whocrashed report. I tried googling this issue, but most of what I found is specific to a driver. My whocrashed report does not mention a specific driver. This is a Dell XPS 13 which I bought only about a month ago. Also, I should mention that in Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation next to "Generic PnP monitor" and when I click properties, under device status it says:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
{Unable to Load Device Driver}
%hs device driver could not be loaded.
Error Status was 0x%x"
I do not use an external monitor, so I'm guessing it's referring to my laptop screen. Not sure if this is relevant to the crashes or not.

3 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. No offending third party drivers have been found. Consider using WhoCrashed Professional which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring your system to produce a full memory dump.
I have a Dell XPS 13 and the F3 button has a battery sign on it. Pressing it brings up some battery meter property . Is there any way I can change that to toggling between two of my Power Plans ("Power Saving, High Performance") each time I press?

I have installed renesas electronics usb 3.0 driver....and using win8 as operating system..
Do I expect similar speeds from usb 2.0 as well as usb 3.0 ports or can it be enhanced in any way??
Also any link for compatible 3.0 driver or bios upgrade.

I've done that (I removed all parts: Access, Middleware, and Drivers), it's no longer showing up in my Installed programs list, yet when I try and continue the Windows 8.1 update, I get the same message.

I'm currently working on a friend's Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 running Windows 8. The LEDs on the front (Status, Loading, Battery, WiFi) are all off, even when battery is installed, and AC adapter is plugged in.
I've checked his AC Adapter with a multimeter, and it shows it's giving off the correct amount of power. I've also tried a working charger from another computer, and it's still not being recognized. I did a bit of troubleshooting before taking it apart, thinking it would be the laptop's DC Jack, so I went and replaced that, only to find it still is acting up. I even tried to take the battery out, and plug it in just with the AC Adapter, but no luck.
Now I did get it to power up once (with the battery installed) for a few seconds, with the message, "this battery is temporarily disabled" as shown in this thread. I powered it down, but it refuses to power back up again. I don't want to say it's a bad motherboard, but that's what I'm starting to believe it is.
I have a new desktop. A dell Precision T7610 with win 8.1 pro x64. I installed APC Powerchute personal edition last weekend. Went out of town and last night came home and noticed I had no power icon on the task bar. I am not sure if this started right away or not. I do like to change the power plan from balanced to high power depending on what I am doing. I can do through control panel, but I figure I should fix why I do not have the icon on the task bar now.
I tired uninstalling powerchute and it failed. I then re-installed and installed. Now power icon.
In the task bar, customize icons, and then turn systems icons on and off, the power icon is set to off but I cannot set it to on. Under customize icons, if I try to set to show icons, it says it is not active.
unfortunately I do not have a restore point before last night. Not sure if I never had any (new machine) or if some how they got deleted.
my dell Inspiron running Windows 8 keeps freezing at the same spot every time I use it now for the past day, and has to be manual powered off, before that I had no problems. Its an old dell, about 5 y/o but have had no problems before this. When I start it up, it can sometimes freeze out of nowhere on the desktop, and if I start it up, and go to shut it down, it will freeze on the shut down. It also ALWAYS freezes when I try to load itunes, but chrome is fine.
I have done an error check on the hard drive in my computer and it said no errors. One thing I have noticed, is when I start the computer, in task manager, the Disk activity is always at 99/100% and when I load itunes, the CPU goes to 100% consistently. But I have all things on start up disabled apart from skydrive.
Few bits of info on computer: Only running defender as antivirus 4gb Ram
Have tried to do a system refresh/restore but the computer freezes everytime while its in progress
Since upgrading my XPS 8700 from Windows 8.1 to 8.1 Pro (via the Win 8.1 Pro Pack upgrade) every time I shut down the system - no matter if I use the "charms" power button or the shut down option from the half-baked "start button" - my computer restarts. I've checked Microsoft's Windows user forums and followed one suggestion to turn off fast startup, but this did not solve the problem. My computer would occasionally restart rather than shut down when running Windows 8 (the original OS) and 8.1, but now it happens every time I shut down.
ODD ASIDE: My two year old Inspiron 620, which supposedly wasn't upgradeable to Windows 8 from Win 7 shuts down running Win 8.1 Pro with no problem whatsoever.
I have a laptop, dell inspiron rs7720 with windows 8 on it. Once i tried to boot a different operation system from a memory stick, it didn't work, nothing happened. From that day after a first boot(doesn't matter through restart or by shutting it down) I always keep getting a quick dell logo for 1 second and then a black screen. By pressing buttons like Esc-f12 the ~Boot options F12~ appears on the right bottom of the screen. If I press F12 no reaction happens. If i just turn the laptop off by holding a button and turn it on again it boots up properly. Tried to reinstall bios, didn't work, but the bios does work. However boot options doesn't(if you press f12 at the dell logo).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI received my laptop (Dell 17r SE) about a week ago but I have been having trouble with it's boot time. From pushing the power button, it takes anywhere between 5 and 10minutes to arrive at the login screen.
I checked the event log for Diagnostic-Performance, and the eventID100 has popped up quite a lot as "critical." I go into details and the stats are not looking to good. These are the times for multiple boots:
BootTime 175799/153962/217864/640216(This one was the first startup that the laptop ever did)
MainPathBootTime 122899/90262/135072/564816(This one was for the first startup that the laptop ever did)
Along with that critical error, I get other warnings saying apps/drivers/services like Svchost, rdbss, gpsvc, SMSSInit took longer than expected to initialise, thereby slowing startup.
I'm not sure if this is useful but apart from that, the log also shows EventID500/501 error events that state that The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded due to heavy resource contention.
This is a new tablet and I am just getting used to Windows 8.1 .
I messed up when I moved folders from being stored in c: to d:.
I now have duplicate folders for pictures, video's etc in Drive D:
How do I correct this ? Can I delete all the folders in D and start again? ( this is a new computer and there is no content in any of these folders)
I also notice that in file explorer I have three main folders with almost the same subfolder structure . The folders are:
a) Myname ( with a picture icon) . Subfolders : Tablet name > documents, music etc
b) Myname: Subfolders : contacts, desktop,favorites, skydrive etc
c) This PC : subfolders: documents, downloads , folders that contain places I connected to through my network) , . C:/, D:/ , libraries etc
Why so many duplicates ? How can I clean this up so there is only the This PC ( I believe this was the original Folder before I messed around ) .
I am trying to get my external hard drives setup from a freshly rebooted installed computer. I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.
I am using windows 8 and from time to time the whole laptop freezes with only short moments where you can move the mouse until it freezes again.
And today I was using word and the program wouldn't let me work in it, you could see the mouse movement at the bottom of the screen only. I had to shut it down using task manager for it to work again.
After making clean install of Windows 8.1 (before I had Windows 8) then my laptop started to hang from time to time.
Selecting tiles in Start screen with keyboard is normal as it used to be , mouse moves normally but HDD light is not on or blinking. Clicking with mouse does do nothing.
When I click fast many times then it finally opens App from Start screen on a program in Desktop mode but everything is slow for 3-4 min. Then it automatically works as it should be, like nothing would be wrong.
I have Latitude 10 tablet that now has Enterprise edition of Windows 8 installed and this has removed the Dell Picks section in the Microsoft app store. Is there any way to get this back? I have an app installed on another device that is Dell exclusive and I cannot find any way to get it installed on the Latitude 10 even though it is a Dell device.

I'm concerned that I might have disabled a utility using Task Manager's advice for saving memory.
I put in a Data CD and it isn't noticed. (Audio CDs are rocognized as "Audio CD" with no ID info). I went to the Windows troubleshooting page and clicked the "fix it" link and the CD was picked up but the next time I put one in the same thing happened.
After I fixed it I tried several data CDs that worked but the next time I restarted is when the problem returned.
I just bought ARMA 3 and believe it or not, the brand new DVD I received has a corrupt file on it. I brought it from ebay so I would like to try and repair it before sending it back.
I am 100% sure it is the disc as my DVD drive is working fine, every other DVD I put in works flawlessly. Installing the game fails at around 50% and burning the DVD to an ISO also fails at 50%. Other games install/burn fine.
I tried copying the files to my hard drive and found that the damaged file is '107411_depotcache_5.csd' which is about 1GB in size (every other file copies without issues).
My question is, can I somehow repair the corrupt file?
So my notebook refuses to boot, so I decided this:
I'll move all the files I want from my notebook to my pc and then do a clean reinstall of windows.
This is my process and I'm going to do and I want to know if I missed anything:
1) write down cdkey ( is there a text file somewhere? last I checked the registry and command prompt it shows us empty)
1.5) change the boot settings
2) boot from cd with the linux live cd knoppix
3) buy a bridged usb cable
4) install driver for cable on both computers (stuffed can be installed even though I boot from a cd right?)
5) copy files over
5) download windows 8
6) burn to cd
7) do a clean install using the custom option.
8) install bridged usb cable software on new windows
9) transfer back data.
I have three external hard drives, 2 x 750GB USB3 Western Digital, and 1 x 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black spinner.
All three have identical data on them, right down to the last byte ... both for the size of data itself; and the size of data on disk.
This is true whether they are opened on Windows 8 or Windows 7 machine. Yet when I open all three of them simultaneously on the machine that had Windows 8, but now has Windows 8.1 ... while they all show the size of data, the size of data on disk is different for each one! Despite the fact that all three still show identical data on disk on Windows 7. Or even on Windows 8 if I reinstall it on the machine which 8.1 is installed on.
It is important because having the data on disk the same confirms they are exactly identical.
How do I access app data folder in 8.1. I cant find it. I need to manually remove some folders hiding in there containing, amongst other things, snap do bug.???? I used to check it regularly in 7, but cant find it in 8 and now 8.1. Spy Hunter 4 is finding these things but says deleted then next check they are back again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a program that will transfer data from my old computer (Vista) to my new computer (Windows 8) I plugged them both in. I had the screen on the Vista computer and it seemed to be working in transferring my stuff. I wanted until the lights on the new computer stopped blinking. Then I disconnected the Vista computer and hooked up all my wires from the Vista onto the Windows 8 computer. I can't find any of the data I supposedly transferred. Where would it be?
So now I think I better do the transfer thing again. So I take the old computer and plug it in (without monitor as I only have 1) No power. It's plugged in but the old computer won't go on. Now, I'm panicking... all my data, documents, spread sheets, genealogy are all in the old computer.
Now I do have backups... portable disks.... I see the info (or some of it) on the backup disks but how do I transfer it onto the Windows 8 computer? Theses were backedup from the old Vista computer.
