Windows 8.1 Fails To Load After Update

Aug 14, 2014

My problem is that my computer no longer is able see Windows 8.1 on bootup. I get a "Loading OS".... message and nothing happens.

Before this happened, I reset my computer from Windows with the intent to change a BIOS setting for the CPU fan and an Windows update was applied on reboot. Windows (apparently) installed the update and then I got to the login screen. At this point, instead of logging into Windows, I hit the reset button to make the BIOS change. After doing this, when I tried to boot again, Windows would even begin to load and I got the "Loading OS" message immediately. Is it possible that Windows did not finish installing the update even though I was at the login screen for Windows 8.1?

I then booted from the USB flash drive with Windows 8 install files (not 8.1... I upgraded from 8 to 8.1). I went into the repair option and then I got the message that no repairs could be found or were needed. (Interestingly now when I try the repair option, the computer automatically reboots so the repair option appears to be very broken now.)

Next, I tried to see if my disks were working and they seem to be. Attached is a screenshot when I list the volumes. C: drive is a HDD data drive without Windows. D: drive appears to be some sort of system restore partition (as far as I understand). F: drive is the SSD with Windows installed on it. I can navigate through all directories fine on the SSD and the drive seems healthy. (E: drive is the USB drive.) When I unhook the data drive, all the letters get shifted up one and this does not seem to be a factor in reviving Windows. Are the drive letters important? I find it odd that the SDD does not show up as C drive with or without the data drive installed.

I tried the sfc /scannow option in offline but I cannot get it to run. I believe that I am entering the letters correctly (and I have tried different variations). Please check if I am not typing this in correctly given my drive letters.---How do I get this to run?

I also tried to apply the Windows System Restore option on my flash drive, I seemingly was able to restore to a restore point set this morning. However, Windows is still not found at bootup at all.

At this point, I'm at a complete loss on how to proceed short of reinstalling Windows. Other options from the Windows 8 repair screen seem to result in loss of programs or data.

For the record, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3. I tried restore some BIOS settings to no effect.

Tevion 8 GB USB Drive

Plugging this drive in while windows is running has no ill effects.

Whenever the USB is left attached during a restart or shut down. the pc fails to load windows. It just has a blinking cursor on the black screen.I have 5 more USB drives that don't affect windows loading at all. So I'm pretty sure it isn't in the BIOS.

But I ran into 0x800f0922 error code and I couldnt install them. (I run Windows 8.1 Pro) I was trying to install Adobe Photoshop but couldnt continue cuz .NET framework 3.5 was required. But after trying to manually download + install I got the same error (0x800f0922). I've tried almost every cmd command but couldnt fix it.

I just reinstalled Windows and tried installing the updates again, but same thing. I cannot install any update at all.

Updates :: Windows 8 On Dell Laptop Fails To Update / Repair Or Restore

Sep 15, 2014

I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine.

He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing every few seconds that was rendering the laptop almost unusable.

I managed to stop that by disabling automatic updates. When I attempted a manual update I got the message :

Windows could not search for new updates: Error Found Code 80070BC9

Other times it would say it needed to be restarted and would go into a restart loop that was generally
Restart one - no message
Restart two - configuring updates - 33%, 67%, 100%
Restart three - failed to configure updates - reverting - restarting
Then would go to the normal login screen

I tried SFC /Scannow which seemed to work and say a restart is needed to implement changes but then fails on restart

DISM didn't work when attempting to run it from the machine but got to 100% when I ran it from my own Windows 8 install disk but then failed and needed a restart to undo the changes.

I also tried a repair and a restore of the current Windows installation but got : Error Code: 80070490 both times

The laptop didn't come with an install disk or serial so it seems restoring it from external media may be out of the question?

Setup Installation :: After Windows 8.1 Update - Failed To Load

Apr 17, 2014

After Windows 8.1 downloaded and installed an update and also SQL Server 2012 SP1, I restarted it and then it no longer booted. The BIOS splash screen would pop up, then the screen went black and nothing else happened. Even the hard drive activity stopped.

I booted from the Windows 8 DVD and chose Troubleshooting and tried Automatic Repair and System Restore, neither of which worked. I then chose Refresh Your PC. However, it then said the drive was locked and I should unlock it before continuing. I used Diskpart to clear the attributes of the volume but that didn't work.

In the end, I did a reinstall without formatting the disk. Once I booted it up properly, I had a look in the Windows.old folder and all of my documents, pictures and other work are missing.

Firstly, is there any way I can roll back to the original install so I don't have to spend a full day installing everything again, and if not, how do I recover all my files?

Windows 8 Fails To Shutdown Or Restart?

When I attempted to create an image I got a statement that "there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location". I had 1.34 TB free on an external drive for an image calculated by Windows as 135.78 GB. After the image attempt the problems started. Today's session with Dell did not solve the problem. Their tech will call to walk me through reinstalling the system to the original state. I hope this is not a common Windows 8 problem.

Sometimes Laptop Fails To Boot In Windows 8.1

Sometimes after I force restart it would boot in the normal title page, but the Desktop Title would not be responsive. I then had to restart using the task manager restart button. (each shutdown I would usually unplug the power source and I would plug it back in before turning on the laptop.

Windows 8 Explorer Fails To Restart Correctly

Nov 16, 2013

I keep experiencing increasing memory usage by Windows Explorer. Most frequently when moving files, or if I use the "Open containing folder" for a file playing in Foobar. It takes several of these to amount to an actual increase but that's only a minor annoyance.

The real problem is that, after opening task manager and selecting to restart explorer, it quite frequently acts as if it has restarted (explorer.exe appearing in the program list), but does not actually load. No desktop, no icons, no start button (I use classic shell), no charms menu, and the windows button to return to the start screen does nothing. All I get is the system clock and the few icons next to it. The problem continues even if you continually restart, until it randomly corrects itself. Could take 1 additional restart, could take 15-20.

This is majorly problematic and annoying, google turns up nothing, and I'm honestly starting to wonder if there's just something wrong with my computer. There's already a hardware problem in that my webcam has an internal disconnect and the display itself has vertical lines randomly appearing, which I am settling with HP, but there are no other noticeable problems.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 To 8 Pro Fails On 2 New Gateway Computers?

Mar 9, 2013

I bought two new, cheap, Gateway computers for the office, but I need to get them upgraded to Pro so that I can join them to my domain. The computers are pretty decent, though, both w 4GB memory, and one's a dual core, and the other a quad; the dual rates at a 4.1 WEI, and the quad is a 4.5.

My Win 8 media was created from my MS Action Pack subscription and should be valid for upgrading this computer.

I tried all of the standard install options for Win 8 from that media, but each time the computer goes through the whole process and finally reboots itself back to where it was before and simply says "Windows 8 Upgrade Fails".

I've thought about wacking the partitions, and installing 8 from scratch, but I guess I'd rather not if I didn't have to...

how I can get this upgrade to go through?

Oh yeah, and where is the setup log? I looked in C:windowspanthersetuperr.log but that file was empty.

Windows 8.1 File Explorer Fails To Open With Right Click

Mar 31, 2014

Windows Explorer as well as other desktop programs failed to respond to a right click from any interface. I was also having printer errors that involved total failure to print. At first, I thought I needed to uninstall all my Epson software and printer, but that resulted in no change. This was likely a Context Menu Handler problem. It suggested downloading a Shell File Extensions View (ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows) from NirSoft version 1.8.6.0 which was free.

The first download I did not use out of fear so I accessed the Context Menu area via regedit, but saw no way to disable any suspected third party Context Menu Handlers. So, in the end, I swallowed hard and ran the NirSoft application. I was able to see all the shell items in the registry, and sorted them by age, the most recent was a Context Menu Handler from Norton Internet Security occurring during the most recent update.

The manager software allowed me to disable just that one handler, and after a restart, File Explorer and everything else behaved normally. So, now I am posting this so it only takes you less than an hour to address this issue, where I spent 4-5 hours on it. I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security and all is still well.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
SFC /scannow
Restart background intelligence service
Remove extra USB devices
Disable antivirus ( I don't have one except for bitdefender)

SFC said something couldn't be repaired and I don't really understand the log. DISM said it repaired a store component or something. I am very lost on where to go next. I cannot seem to upload the CBS.log as a .txt I get an internal error.

When Secure Boot Fails - System Repair Broke Windows

Feb 8, 2013

I had a problem where I was running UEFI with secure boot disabled and dual booting with Linux Mint which is UEFI compliant. Mint had installed Grub, Mint's boot manager but I don't like Grub so i installed rEFInd. Unlike Grub rEFInd has support for UEFI and should have worked better as a boot manager. But it gave me problems too. So I had Grub and rEFInd both installed. I could boot to both Mint and Windows but the boot managers, both Grub or rEFInd, would not show at startup like they are supposed to.

I had to boot the PC, then hit Escape getting into my options menu built into the system, hit F9 to get a list of boot options where i could then choose to boot from hard drive, cd rom, usb etc. rEFInd was in this list. Only after choosing rEFInd from here, was I able to open rEFInd and choose Windows or Mint. This is way too many steps to boot into an OS, so i thought i'd try to use the system repair disk to repair my master boot record or the EFI data that the system uses at boot under UEFI. I forgot that i had to run some additional commands under command prompt and just ran automatic repair from Advanced instead.

At this time Windows had no trouble working at all with secure boot enabled if I really needed windows to use secure boot.

It said it found but could not fix the errors. Suddenly, Windows would not boot even with secure boot enabled. I reran the tool 3 times and it didn't work so i wiped the drive and reinstalled Windows from a clean state. I really did not have errors on the system to begin with accept that the system was trying to access my boot managers in an odd manner.. although i could get everything to work.

The automatic repair option should not have made things worse, even breaking my secure boot but it did.

My point of this is to show that the repair disk tools and how they play with the EFI boot tools is buggy and it can break your system even if there is nothing wrong with Windows and it's ability to boot under secure boot. Don't trust the Repair Disk tool folks. Don't trust UEFI. Don't trust Secure Boot. Be smart. Install a clean system under Legacy Bios mode with UEFI and secure boot disabled.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8.1 - Create Recovery Disk Fails

Aug 5, 2014

Brand new laptop. HP. 17e UEFI +GPT etc. Upgraded to 8.1 from 8, first thing. Then clicked on the MS, create recovery. (in blind hope of a clean 8.1 restore). Inserted (32gb stick) (later found out is illegal windows 8 version, that is not removable.) SD-extreme, 32gb. list on toms HW, as winner of all, (and is useless for this app).

So I pull out my very old SD cruiser glide, 32gb (old , slow and not win 8 cert (a good thing). Yes all 32gb extremes are mapped as HDD not removable media and is doomed. (known on all forums) but same error.

The cruiser shows up i device manager under removable media....btw i want to find out why the missing files error. I have a HDD and SSD, with latter mirrored. both the orig, HDD fails and SSD fails. same way. I parked the HDD , and run only SSD. but both fail... (my guess is , upgrades 8.0 to windows 8.1 is cause).

now the screen,
attached

How can i find the log of these errors, it's not in event viewer.. oddly. sfc/ scannow works. as does chkdsk, and restore (create) works,. and system is Fast a lightning. All HP apps works, cept there version of create disk for same reasons.

My HP create recovery now works on the GLIDE. (old very old 32gb stick i had laying about). So now I am thinking HP? blocks the MS create so you will use theirs? But I'd lilke to know this, what files are missing....

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - File History Fails To Work And Cannot See External Drive

Nov 26, 2013

Running Windows 8.1 and File History was working OK for my computer, actually on two different computers worked just fine. (I never could get File History to work with Windows 8). Then suddenly this feature just up an quit. Got a little "red" flag in the Action Center. Using the control panel an "setting" up File History my system says that file history is turned off. I never did turn it off, it seems it just up an turned itself off.

But here is the thing, I select my external drive to use for file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. It "sees" the drive but will not enabled this drive. I have used various windows programs, such as system services..to "turn" on file history. But there seems not to be anything that will fix file history.

It seems all the support is non specific to file history not working. I have yet to see a simple fix to "make" Windows 8.1 to again run file history. I would just like to point and click to backup the computer...but windows is now becoming NON-USER friendly to manage these types of things.
