After Upgrade Unable To Access BIOS Or Boot Menu?
Nov 13, 2012
My Acer Extensa 5620Z originally came with Vista, then I clean installed Win 7, now upgraded to Win 8. Since the latest upgrade, I am unable to access BIOS or the boot menu. The black and white boot screen used to say to press F12 for boot menu, and something else for Setup, those messages are no longer there. And those key combinations do not work. I've also tried some other combinations I've found in searches - F2, Alt-F10, ctrl F10, alt ctrl F10, F8, del, esc. None work.
Could the upgrade has modified the firmware somehow? Boot screen says Phoenix bios, TrustedCore v1.32 - I think that is the same it has been.

My computer is so messed up Version 8.1 . I first noticed that I had a problem with Kaspersky. It said my license was unable to verify and to update data base to solve. It wont let me update. In fact it wont even let me uninstall, and secondly I cant download ANYTHING off the internet. My main problem is OFFICE keeps freezing and I need that program it also says there is a problem with my license and I have not been able to fix it it just freezes. So I thought I will download open office, but as I mentioned I cant download anything when I click run nothing happens when I click save it says corrupt or unreadable file. I thought no problem I will just hit F2 (yes I have tried hitting every single key after this and nothing) and enter bios screen and recover from my USB but do you think F2 (or any other key takes takes me there, no. Products like Kaspersky, Office, I have paid for etc say they are unlicensed which they are not. Anything I try to download, anything, like a new virus program will not work. I can't download, I cant even get into Change my PC settings it just freezes when I click this. I have had people try and trouble shoot this, Kaspersky has not gotten back to me and everyone is telling me stuff I cant do. I cant download, I cant access bios, I cant even access Change my PC settings. Ready to hear all the generic "it should" or "you should be able to"

I turned my laptop right off last night (I usually just put it into sleep mode) and now, since rebooting this morning, I can't get the menu to slide in from the right hand side. Instead, the Power and Search icons are showing at the top of the start screen along side my name and avatar.
I've recently had to have a new hard drive but the menu has been working OK until now.
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to get this back?

My wife has a new Asus X750j Laptop.
I've spent the last day and a half setting it up.Now I want to make a system image of the C: drive using Paragon.
I do this from a bootable DVD, but it isn't set to boot to the DVD first in the boot order.
I've tried tapping the F11, F8, Del, Esc and F2 keys and it just boots into Windows 8.
My computer which has an ASUS motherboard, shows a message when I boot, saying select "Delete" to boot into the UEFI Bios.
But I can't seem to get either a boot menu of the bios option on the laptop.

I am trying to access the boot menu or Setup on a Gateway NE56R31u laptop. Searches have said it could be accessed by pressing Esc or F10 at the Gateway boot screen, but I've been unable to make that happen. I've done this hundreds of times on other computers, so I know the technique and the timing that has worked in the past. I've also tried Del key, Fn + F10, F8. How to make this happen?

i'm using a Gateway Windows 8 64 Bit.
I know how to access the boot menu using the advanced troubleshooting option inside the computer. But, what if Windows 8 becomes unbootable and I cannot log into the machine? There is no boot menu option like Windows 7.
I have heard if Windows will not boot, it will display the advanced options automatically. Is this true?
Also, if I power down my system while it is booting up will I be able to access the boot menu on next startup?

Yesterday, after many, many problems with my computer, I finally decided to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro onto my ASUS X200CA netbook. However, after backing up and reinstalling the OS, I found that when I tried to disable "Launch CSM" in my BIOS, all of my boot options would disappear and my laptop would continually boot into my BIOS. When I re-enabled "Launch CSM", the boot options would reappear - however, it had not included the "Option #1 - Windows Boot Manager" that I had seen in my other installation.

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104
Try again Cancel
Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.
I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.
While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.
Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.

.I have an HP Pavilion Slimline PC desktop. It does not allow me to boot from CD/DVD drive or USB connection. Windows 8.1. I wish to be able to use the boot options cd/dvd and all the USB options. I can't use any of the options. I list bios setup options and suggestions given to me from articles but I'm not sure I'm afraid of error. I don't have that much experience in bios setup.
Articles have said in BIOS setup Security is to be disabled. I suppose Legacy remains disabled(?). It is suggested that I shutdown and reboot.
BIOS Setup > Storage > Boot Order has this list:
UEFI Boot Sources
Windows Boot Manager
USB Floppy/CD[code]....
At bottom of this Boot Order Window are the options: F5=disable Enter=drag F10=accept ESC=cancel
Windows Boot Manager at the the top stops all other options.beneath it. How does that 'drag' work. Don'tr I have to move 'Windows Boot Manager' to the bottom?
And move ATAPI CD/DVD drive to the top? of this UEFI boot sources list?
Is it true that if there is an error in the BIOS Boot Setup and Windows 8.1 does not boot, the BIOS Setup will come up instead so one can do a fix?

My new XPS 2710. I was going to change the hard drive to an SSD. No problem doing this but when I tried to reboot the screen is stuck on the round Dell logo. I checked the forums and it seems changing to a SSD in windows 8 is problematic and it needs settings changed in the bios. Problem is I can't get into the bios. Using either the wifi keyboard or a wired keyboard I found that by pressing the ctrl key when booting it shows press F12 for boot options in the corner and a blue bar moves across the screen which is a timer but if I hit F2 or F12 the blue bar disappears and the screen just stays on the Dell logo. It's as if it's not reading the F keys or reads them as a normal key and stops the timer.
I've tried ctrl F12 or F2 or any number of combinations but everything just kills the timer and doesn't enter either the boot menu or the bios. I've put back the original drive. I've cleared the bios using the jumper. I've removed the bios battery. I've tried with and without RAM and hard drive but I just cannot get the F2 or F12 or F8 keys to work. Is there another combination key I need to use with the F2 or F12?
Just as a bit more background the sequence of event went like this. Use flash drive to load clone program, Cloned original Dell Drive. Removed 2TB drive and put in samsung EVO SSD. Booted computer to check it would run. Did but found no OS as expected. Rebooted using USB and cloned 2TB onto SSD. Went OK. Booted computer and it went through the Dell logo to a blank screen as if it was going to load Win 8.1. then a small white line appeared near center of screen and it froze. Rebooting just went to Dell Logo. No F2, F12 key would work to give me access to boot menu or BIOS. Trying different key combinations shows that I can get the blue timer and Press F12 screen every time I boot provided I press the Control Key. however no combination of keys with the F2 or on its own will access the BIOS. It just finishes the timer bar and goes to the Dell logo.
I've tried just about everything i know. With and without HD and SSD, Bios clear, CMOS battery out. Ram out. Totally stuck. I'm convinced that if I can reset the bios then I'm good to go again, but I just can't access the darn thing.
Any of you cognoscenti out there have the magic key combination?

I have been using Windows 7 Pro (64) for several years, and today installed a newly purchased Windows 8 Pro (64) OS. I looked on-line and found many articles on how to multi-boot back to Windows 7 after installing Windows 8, and believe I have done this correctly (more below), but when booting up I do not ever see a multi-boot menu, my system boots directly into Windows 8.
When installing Win 8, I booted from my CD/DVD drive with the Win 8 OS media in the drive. (I had previously reduced the volume of my Windows 7 drive and created a new partition that I called "Windows8". ). At the appropriate time in the Win 8 install I chose "Custom", then chose the newly created "Windows 8" partition, then proceeded with the Win 8 OS install. As mentioned above, I do not see the multi-boot menu when booting up, however when in Windows 8 I can see the Windows 7 drive in "Computer", so it was not over-written.
Startup Options - Choose a Default OS to Run at Startup in Windows 8
and am wondering if I should try Options 2 through 4 (1 of)? I build my own PCs so know something about PC's, bt not much about booting to an OS.....
Another options might be installing a third party boot manager, which I have not yet done.
my reason for getting back to Win 7 is to be able to use the PC while I learn and setup Win 8 over time. I went into this believing that getting a multi-boot capability would be very easy.

Last night before going to bed my laptop said it was going to update within a day. I closed the lid as usual and the next day, when I opened it, it was stuck on a blank screen for a few minutes then up came the Asus screen, then into Automatic Repair, then Diagnosing your PC, then "Repairing Disk Errors. This might take more than an hour to complete."
I let it run for about 4 hours but with no effect. I tried a few times to no avail. No matter what I do - F8, F10, F12 - I can't do anything other than get into Bios. I fiddled around with some options, but there weren't many and nothing worked. Finally, I removed the hard drive and attached it to another laptop with a caddy and couldn't get in - it is corrupted and unreadable.
So do I simply need a new hard drive? Or is it possible the problem is even worse? A friend says he has a tool that might be able to retrieve some of my files, but at least my most important ones are in Dropbox.
The other concern I have is that even when I install a new hard drive, I don't know how to get an operating system back up. The laptop didn't come with a disk. How do i go about installing an OS? Windows 7 would be preferable, although it did have 8 on it previously.
The laptop is Asus Ultrabook S400C. It doesn't have an internal cd drive.

I have an ASUS K35TK, it's about a year old, and was running windows 7, until I upgraded to 8.1 about 5 days ago. Since upgrade I frequently get limited access. I've never had this problem before upgrading. While it's limited on my asus, my parents laptops still work, my iPod, tablet and other devices. The network checks fine. The only thing different is my OS. I've tried disabling IPV6, as suggested for this problem, I got nothing. I've deleted my profile and reconnected, I've done some stuff with netsh commands on CMD, and nothing changes. Connecting through Ethernet is fine, just the wireless is messed up. I downloaded all the proper drivers for windows 8 from the asus website before upgrading. Everything installed fine and I'm not having any driver issues. This is an error specifically with windows 8.1. My brother had run 8 for a we months with everything fine, he upgraded to 8.1 and has the same problem. He has a Lenova with completely different specs.

I've been getting a "File Access Denied, You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file", popup window even with UAC turned off?
The files in question are shortcuts in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
It also happens in C:UsersUser-NameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms.
Basically what I'm doing is renaming the title of the tiles/programs displayed on the Metro Start screen. If there is a better way I'm all for that as having to click continue every time is getting old.

I am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.

I upgraded my Acer Aspire One netbook from Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 via the Store. The upgrade went smoothly and it appears that my files and installed apps are all intact. However, IE 11 can't access the internet, can't display any web page. FireFox and Chrome work fine. Metro apps (including the Store) report that they can't find a connection to the internet and tell me to make sure my computer is connected.
I can access shares on my network although Windows Explorer reports that I am not connected to a network.
I've tried wired as well as wireless connection to my router with no difference. I tried turning off/on the Firewall.
I tried running netsh winsock reset from a command prompt and restarting which had no effect.

I have a new XPS8700. I have been unable to download the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the MS Store. My first problem was a lack of Windows updates, which I did, and now I can see the 8.1 upgrade in the store. I can also download updates to other aps.
My remaining problem is a continual notice every time I hit download that I need to first log into an account with admin access. Best I can tell, this and other forums have shown me how to add Admin capability with the Command prompt. I even created a second account and did the same thing. Within the User Summary screen within control panel, both USers show "administrator". Yet I still cannot get access
I have tried "net user administrator /active:yes" as well as tried same with swapping my name for administrator
The actual "administrator" user cannot do anything within the App Store. That appears to be what is supposed to happen.

The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.
I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.
I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.
I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ?how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?
