Way To Clean Desktop From Dust?

Mar 20, 2012

I need to know what I can use to make sure dust gets out/doesn't get into my computer. I've heard canned air, which I remember using for my old VCR few years ago, but I remember it didn't do so well which is why I'm cautious over using thata agin for my desktop.P.S. after a while of usage upon turning it on, give or take 3-4 hours in, I think I'm hearing the fan sound in a unusually way, but not in a good way, more like an okay/cautious way. It'll build up, after a while it'll go down. Hard to explain.

Clean Windows For Desktop Folders?

Jul 2, 2011

Is there a way to get clean windows (folders) on the desktop, without all the navigation bars and icons? For about two decades, I've organized my Windows desktop with a handful of folders containing links to the most-used programs - sort of an always-up start menu. The folders are in Startup so they open on boot.Even with the navigation stuff on the left closed, the Windows 7 folders have too much stuff on the top and bottom.

Is there a way to get something that looks more like the classic Windows folder? They don't have to be consistent with the other folders, but they do have to be there all the time.

Clean Boot To Notebook Via Desktop Over PXE

Jul 21, 2012

I have an older Toshiba Tecra A5 notebook which does not have a built-in DVD drive, nor do I have an external DVD drive. BIOS does not support USB boot, but does have a PXE boot option. My desktop is an older Dell model with a working DVD, but no wireless capabilities. Both computers are running activated Win 7 Ultimate X86 and are connected through a wireless access point..Linksys WRT54Gv8: running firmware is micro dd-wrt. Both IP's are dynamic, but almost never change. Objective is to use Ultimate boot CD to completely wipe and re-partion the Tecra via the desktop, where Ultimate boot is located. Unable to employ ADHOC, desktop is not wireless, cannot afford to buy anything new, and I also enjoy a good challenge.I am looking for the most basic method, without using homegroup nonsense etc.

Clean Windows 7 Install-loading Files To Scrolling Progress Bar To Blank Desktop W/cursor?

May 5, 2010

When I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 I get the loading files white progress bar you normally get during an installation, it then goes directly to the scrolling progress bar that would normally appear before a Windows startup, and then goes to a blank Windows 7 desktop with only a cursor (that I can move).I have a computer with the following specs:[CODE]I have tried to install with every version I can get my hands on, both 32 and 64 bit. None of them are upgrade versions. I've tried installing on a fresh WD Raptor and an Intel G25 SSD. All other drives have been disconnected. I've moved my memory around and tried with one stick. My mainboard has the latest official BIOS, although there is a new beta.

I ran the Windows 7 compatibility test and didn't see anything that would cause this problem.I have searched the internet and have not been able to find a solution sonstalling Windows XP has never been a problem, just Windows 7, always with the same problem. This is one of the few times when I have not been able to look around a find an existing answer to a problem and I am stumped.

When Save Files From Programs Onto Desktop / Cannot See Them Directly From Actual Desktop

Oct 26, 2011

When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop. But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

Desktop Icon Grid Changes When Using Extended Desktop?

May 25, 2012

I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.

Unwanted Desktop Icons - How To Get Them Off The Desktop

Nov 1, 2012

I recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.

How To Clean Up The Disk

Sep 5, 2011

How I got in the current state is a looong story! But I have a new 2TB drive (~2 weeks old) that appears to have 3 partitions on it:

a) "New Volume", 80GB NTFS, Primary, healthy

b) "Local Volume", 0 bytes Not Formatted, Primary Healthy

c) 1.741TB Unallocated

My problem is I didn't create and don't want the "Local Volume" partition. But just about everything I try in Acronis Disk Director either crashes it or says "internal error".I've given up on the data. Is there anything I can do to get this drive back to its original usable state?I'm running Win7 x64 (and I suspect its repair utility caused the corruption).

How To Do Clean Install

Feb 8, 2013

My 2 year old laptop is starting to get sluggish so I'm wondering if I should try to do a clean install of my Home Premium Windows. Problem is, the computer came with no disks. Also, I'm assuming that the Backup and Restore function that's built in would only give me a copy of my crap-filled hard drive contents if I "made" the backup (to an external disk, presumably) then "restored" it to my freshly formatted internal drive. right? So, can I make my OWN clean disks with some utility on the machine? Or do I have to BUY another copy of Windows 7 Home Premium? Or will Best Buy provide me with one if I take my machine in? Or will Lenovo provide one?

Win 7 Clean Install

I am currently running build 7600 of Windows 7, I did a clean install without formatting the drive over windows vista premium 64bit and then removed the windows.old folder via the directions found on this board. My question is, that when I download my copy of Windows 7 off of digitalriver (I'm a college student) what is it I need to do in order to have a clean install? I've heard numerous reports that say I wouldn't have to install anything because build 7600 is the final version, and all I would need to do is enter the product key given on my upgrade version.
