I am going to be doing a clean install on a Dell desktop. I see on the Windows sticker that it says Windows 7 Pro OA.
Does OA mean some type of OEM installation?
Will that product key work if I install Windows 7 Pro from the iso file I got from the Digital River site?
I am not sure if I am in the correct forum or not. Before I post all of my system details, etc., I wanted to ask a few questions about cleaning this new dell xps 17 L702x out and reinstalling the OS and getting the drivers from dell vs the cd's that came with it ? I have a few more questions about that, but wanted to make sure I was in the right place before spewing out all the details.

I just took delivery of a Dell (xps 9000, Windows 7 64) and it's the first system I've had that didn't come with an OS disc. So, I'm new to all this recovery/diagnostic partition stuff. I'd like to be able to do a clean install of Windows 7 so I don't have the bloatware that came pre-installed. But, from what I've read it seems like my only option is to create a system image to restore to (which would have all the pre-installed stuff anyway)? Is my only option to uninstall anything I don't want and then do the system image? I know that would leave some registry files and whatnot, but ideally I'd like a completely clean install.

On ebay, they sell Dell windows 7 einstallation dvds, but they have no product keys/ COAs. I do have a product key/ COA underneath my laptop. Will one of theseI need a reinstallation just so i can restore my original system via my recovery dvds from the previous hard drive.

They told me that the system was compatible however, when I got it home and several hundred dollars later, we have no sound. I am a little techy, but have not been able to locate a driver to work, The store has been unresponsive since they have been paid.

I have a new Dell XPS 8300 desktop still in the box with a HDD pre-installed with Windows 7. Since it was not a customization option at the time of purchase, I would like to install a new SSD to run Windows 7 and a few important programs that I will load in the future. There are currently no programs or data on the existing HDD that I need to transfer other than the OS and the drivers that I need to make the computer work. I would like to avoid messing with cloning and adjusting partitions if possible.Eventually, I would like to use the HDD as a secondary drive where I can load non-essential programs and store larger data files.Based on what I have read on numerous threads, the following is the procedure I intend to use. Please let me know if I am missing any steps or if I am doing something that will not achieve the desired result.
1) Turn on computer with the HDD installed as-is and the SSD still sitting in the box.
2) Use Dell�s DataSafe Local BackUp to create a System Recovery Media on either a DVD or 8+ GB USB key.
3) For a belt and suspenders backup, next I was going to use the Windows 7 feature to create a system image found at Control Panel -> System and Security -> Backup and Restore. I am very conservative and would like the option to start over if I mess anything up. I was planning on saving the system image to the existing HDD and to a either a DVD or external hard drive. I am not exactly sure how large this file is and where I should store it.
4) Restart computer and enter BIOS, and change the SATA mode to AHCI. I assume this should be done before installing the SSD. Power down computer immediately after.
5) After powering down, I was going to unplug the HDD power cable and unplug the connection of the HDD to SATA Port 0.
6) Install new SSD in a free bay and connect power and cable to SATA Port 0.
7) Restart computer with System Recovery Media (from Step 2) already in either the DVD drive or plugged into a USB port. I assume the computer will automatically boot from the System Recovery Media, but I realize I may need to enter BIOS (or some other system menu) to tell it to load and install Windows 7 from the System Recovery Media. Can anyone fill in the blank here so I know what to expect?
8) After Windows 7 has been installed, will the System Recovery Disk automatically install all of the device drivers that originally were installed on the system�s HDD? I have a device drivers disk from Dell but was hoping this would be accomplished by the System Recovery Disk?
9) I am assuming after Step 8, that the computer will function and look the same way as it did at Step 1. This may be a little na�ve. Is there anything I am missing?
10) I was hoping that Windows 7 would do a good job of automatically adjusting the system for the SSD, so I was going to not fool with the tweaks that everyone is recommending. Are there any tweaks or setting adjustments that I have to make to allow the SSD to function properly? Optimum performance is great, but I don�t want to risk standard performance by messing things up after I have come this far.
11) After verifying that everything is working properly, I was going to power down and then connect the existing HDD to power and an available SATA port.
12) Reboot the system, and magically the HDD will be listed as an E drive that I can store data files and load non-essential programs on. I actually assume it is not this easy. Do I need to uninstall Windows 7 on the HDD or delete the partition and reformat? The less the better, but I don�t want to create problems with conflicting drives.
I can't find a slot for inserting Transcend SD 2 GB on my Dell desktop computer, it has only slots for USB flash drive.

I've heard canned air, which I remember using for my old VCR few years ago, but I remember it didn't do so well which is why I'm cautious over using thata agin for my desktop.P.S. after a while of usage upon turning it on, give or take 3-4 hours in, I think I'm hearing the fan sound in a unusually way, but not in a good way, more like an okay/cautious way. It'll build up, after a while it'll go down. Hard to explain.

For about two decades, I've organized my Windows desktop with a handful of folders containing links to the most-used programs - sort of an always-up start menu. The folders are in Startup so they open on boot.Even with the navigation stuff on the left closed, the Windows 7 folders have too much stuff on the top and bottom.
Is there a way to get something that looks more like the classic Windows folder? They don't have to be consistent with the other folders, but they do have to be there all the time.
I have an older Toshiba Tecra A5 notebook which does not have a built-in DVD drive, nor do I have an external DVD drive. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a re-install of all components following a complete corruption of the boot sector on my drive which could not be fixed with repairs. The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs. I keep getting an error along the following lines: Quote: ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Windows 7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.
Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.I have referenced this thread here, but offered solutions do not seem to work for me: Intel IDT Audio Driver will not install
Does anyone know whether there is a difference in performance between doing a clean install of Windows 7 vs upgrading Vista? Any better stability? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the trouble of the clean install.

On a Dell, that usually meant ordering from the Dell business division and specifically asking for a clean setup of Windows and a Dell-branded Windows Setup disk as opposed to a system recovery set.I got a call from someone today who said Dell declined that request and stated they no longer sell any computer from any of their divisions with clean (uncrapified) Windows.

At first, I disabled RAID because of the blue screens and I found that one was bad and the second of the RAID 1 appeared fine. Well, I installed XP to ensure it would work and that was extremely slow. My client didn't have a disc to XP MCE, but instead bought Windows 7. The installation took about 12 hours and the system is often unresponsive. On resource monitor, the 2.13Ghz Conroe CPU is barely tapped and the 2GB of RAM is barely at 30%. However, the system takes forever to boot and it very often stops responding for a period of time.
I did my research and found out that this model--original specs--can handle 7 better than this. I told the client it was probably an HDD error, as it seems to hang everytime the system must access the HDD. I can't even run the Index to find out what the systems rating is. I mem tested the RAM and chkdsk the HDDs before removing the first because of its clear faults in its inability to hold an OS installation. I recently installed the 2.5.3 BIOS update, but I haven't had a chance to install a newer version of Intel Matrix Manager.
I originally did the upgrade install of Windows 7 from Vista to Windows 7. I am seeing that I now am running "ChkDsc" every time that my computer is shut down. I was told that I would be better off to do a clean install and reinstall programs and files. Can I do a clean install with my upgrade disc, or will I be creating additional problems ?

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.12 Ghz
nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX 512 MB PCI-e
320 GB Western Digital HD SATA
1 Gb DDR2 1066 MHz and 2x2Gb DDR2 1066 MHz SDRAM
I set my boot sequence to boot from DVD-ROM drive first, and HD second. It goes to the "Windows is loading files" screen and gets hung up. I started the process and went to watch TV for an hour, and it is still on the "Windows is loading files" screen. I haven't gotten any error messages. I've unplugged all USB devices from my computer as I have seen on this forum that it has worked for some people.
edited to add: I originally had only 2 Gb of RAM, and it got hung up at the "Windows is loading files" screen. I thought it was getting hung up because I didn't have enough RAM, so I bought brand new 2 sticks of 2 Gb RAM. I took out one of the 1 Gb sticks and placed both of the 2 Gb of RAM...for a total of 5 Gigs. And, it is still doing the same thing.
Windows 7 64 bit loaded on a clean formatted disc on Dell M5030. However no wifi drive or other drives are installed. Also, I cannot install any drivers I get a message need to know if you are running x84 or x64. Seems that the software isn't putting the entire programs up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm finding this decision quite hard to decide on and can't decide what to do. I am very picky about wasted space or unnecessary stuff on my hard drive, yet I'd rather not install everything all over again which will take about 20 hours or so.
My question is...if I do an upgrade-install, can I just delete everything in the Windows.old folder and have everything practically the same as a clean install? Or will there be still be some left over things from the hundreds of programs I've installed and uninstalled?
Edit: I've ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and everything seems ok.
My 2 year old laptop is starting to get sluggish so I'm wondering if I should try to do a clean install of my Home Premium Windows. Problem is, the computer came with no disks. Also, I'm assuming that the Backup and Restore function that's built in would only give me a copy of my crap-filled hard drive contents if I "made" the backup (to an external disk, presumably) then "restored" it to my freshly formatted internal drive. right? So, can I make my OWN clean disks with some utility on the machine? Or do I have to BUY another copy of Windows 7 Home Premium? Or will Best Buy provide me with one if I take my machine in? Or will Lenovo provide one?
