I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and recently had a clean install of Windows 7 done by a large box store (I won't list names at this point). They told me that the system was compatible however, when I got it home and several hundred dollars later, we have no sound. I am a little techy, but have not been able to locate a driver to work, The store has been unresponsive since they have been paid.

I own a dell demension 4600 also i have upgraded the ram to 4 gigs, the cpu to 3.02, a nvidia geForce 6200 agp graphics card, i know i will be needing a sound card, what would you recommend. What i am looking to do is install windows 7 home premium. I seem to have all of the necessary hardware to do this install. Will I need to purchase a new copy of windows 7 home premium. I already own several other computers with windows 7 running on them. I was just wondering if it will work like when I pop an XP disc in a pc and it just lets me install windows. If its going to cost me more than 150 I would rather just let this pc live out its lifespan running what it currently is. But I don't mind overcoming a few hurdles to install 7 as long as it is not going to get too costly and the troubleshooting becomes too time consuming.

I am running 32 bit Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 on a Dell Dimension 8400
I bought a second hand Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows 7. I have no sound. The drivers are installed in Device Manager (Realtec AC'97), and also (Uniplex Half Modem) both under sound, video controllers. There are no exclamation marks in device manager. All drivers are up to date. Dell diagnostic and Microsoft Fix it both say everything is ok. There is no sound from internal speaker. I tried external speakers via green jack at back & front of machine but there is no option to select these speakers. If I try to play music then nothing happens. When I access the sound option there is a green 'equalizer bar' which goes up and down to tell music is playing...but I can't hear anything. I have checked and mute is not selected-volume is set to 100%. I opened the machine and behind the jack plug seems to be closed with no removable parts. I downloaded the latest Audio Driver from Dell but it says its not compatible with my OS.
I think I've covered everything I've done.
Three years ago I gave my wife my Dimension 4700 (520, 2GB ram, XFX 9600GT video, XP Pro). For her use of internet news research, MSN games, online banking/shopping and email, it's fine for her. I was toying with trying Windows 7 on there because I've heard other folks talk about successfully installing it on older hardware. Anyone done this on a 4700?
I can ghost her machine and try 7 from my MSDN, the return to the original image if it fails. Just wanted to save the grief if someone else has tried it already.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI got a new computer custom built a few months ago, but it came with Windows 7 32 bit, so I decided to wipe it clean and install 64 bit, for gaming purposes.It installed fine, games ran a lot smoother etc, sound was working at this point.The sound still worked up until a few days ago, when the headset I was using had broken. I ordered a new one from Amazon and while I waited for it to arrive I thought I'd just use my phone earphones in my computer.Considering the sound worked, the same day on my headset, but didn't work with my earphones, I'm sure you can imagine how confused I was. Because the headset was only physically broken, the sound was still working through it, and it sounded perfectly fine and clear, but when I used my earphones it didn't work at all.After some looking around, I discovered that the Realtek HD audio manager wasn't even installed on my computer, even though the previous headset had worked.. which confused me even more.So I installed it, plugged in my phone earphones, and it still didn't work.At this point I wasn't too bothered, because I thought that maybe it was because turtle beach headsets had their own sound-card inside the box that controls the volume, so I waited.
Only to have them have the exact same problem as my phone earphones, they didn't work on my computer, at all. I done all the usual stuff, checked that it was the default device on playback devices, which lead me to the other issue, my computer hasn't even picked them up as a device. I thought it was okay though, because the headset (Turtle beach x12's) are designed for xbox, but are compatible with PC (Which I have confirmed by using a laptop, they work on that). My old headset (Turtle Beach Foxtrot) actually appeared in the playback devices as "Turtle Beach Foxtrot" which I set as the default device, but with this new headset, nothing appears, just "Speakers".I've re-installed the realtek drivers and manager so many times, trying different versions, I've updated my chipset, checked nothing is conflicting in Device manager (There are no yellow symbols on anything), I've made sure audio is enabled in Services, I made sure audio is enabled in my BIOS, changing it to AC97 instead of HD, also changed the settings in Realtek HD audio manager to AC97. I've made sure the ports I'm plugging the headset into are working, by plugging my mouse into the same USB port. I've tried plugging them into the back panel, tried every possible combination.I've even made sure that the old headset I used didn't have its own sound card, because I thought maybe the sound card had been disabled inside my computer.The only thing it points to, is something being disabled inside my machine, which I haven't checked yet, because I wanted it to be a last resort.
I just took delivery of a Dell (xps 9000, Windows 7 64) and it's the first system I've had that didn't come with an OS disc. So, I'm new to all this recovery/diagnostic partition stuff. I'd like to be able to do a clean install of Windows 7 so I don't have the bloatware that came pre-installed. But, from what I've read it seems like my only option is to create a system image to restore to (which would have all the pre-installed stuff anyway)? Is my only option to uninstall anything I don't want and then do the system image? I know that would leave some registry files and whatnot, but ideally I'd like a completely clean install.

I have recently loaded Windows 7 (Home Premium) on to a Dell Dimension 2400 (32 bit). Installation went smoothly but screen resolution is stuck at 480 x 640 which makes the computer practically unworkable.
