Unable To Access External Ssd Drive?
Jan 17, 2013
my SSD drive was suddenly inaccessible after a reboot, so I put my backup spindle drive into my laptop to get it started. Because I have important files I need to access from my ssd I put that into a case and plugged it into the USB port. Now windows explorer just hangs forever trying to detect/access it! in Computer management I cannot see the disk partition but I can see the harddisk device in device manager.
In windows explorer I can see one drive letter assigned (there should be two drives on the ssd) but when I tried to access the drive it just hangs forever. It also hangs with any other methods I try to access it (chkdsk, data recovery programs, Testdisk by CGSecurity)!!I think the main issue is that the external ssd is locking up everytime some program tries to access it... perhaps if I can somehow remove this lock I might be able to attempt a data recovery.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

My external dvd/cd drive (Sony DRX S7OU W) previously worked from this computer running on Windows 7 but I now receive the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access them." The same dvd/cd drive continues to work on other computers. All other devices that I link to this port (camera, ipod) continue to function. I tried new firmware downloaded from Sony but this did not help.

I have bought a seagate 500gb external hard drive of which i am able to fill only 117 gb. Rest is unfilled. Now whenever i try to insert any kind of file( games movies songs etc.) a message pops up saying that i need to take permission from administrator. When i continue it then again a message comes and it bluntly denies my request. Hence i am unable to pour data into my external hard drive. But I have full access to the already stored data that is i can watch movies which have already been stored in that hard drive. But the probelem is i can not bring new files to it due to this administrator problem.

External hard drive salvaged from computer running Windows XPEncased, plugged into USB on new computer running (not by choice) Windows 7(Know where this is going?) Given every permission and ownership to new computer to have its way with docs on external drive. Can't copy docs from external drive to new computer even in (basicithout networking) safe mode. (And haven't tried a mac.)Can I somehow change permissions or ownership on the EXTERNAL drive to access my own documents? Anything else?If I throw it against the wall, will that work? Who is this other administrator to give access, when I'm the only administrator?

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive and Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. I have a user setup for each member of my family on the computer. The maxtor drive was working fine uptil I decided that I wanted only myself to be able to access it only. The drive appeared as my K drive. I went to sharing and added myself as read/write access and removed the everyone share thinking that only I would be able to use the drive. I restarted my PC and now nobody can access it. When I plug the drive into the usb slot the drive whirs up as normal but there is no drive letter for it and it does not appear in device manager etc. I plugged it into my old XP machine and that cannot read it either..

This morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.
After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".
I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.
I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?

I am using Windows Seven ultimate x64 and I started having a problem when trying to access user's folder under documents and settings or users on any attached external hard drive on my computer. i didn't have this problem before, it started on the same installation of windows and without any changes to my system settings or user settings.
I am a computer tech and I use my computer to backup data before repairing computers so I attach the hard drive to my computer using a USB enclosure. This is limiting my work since I didn't find any solution yet. It's giving me the error below: "you don't currently have permission to access this folder" This is happening on any external hard drive I want to access the user's data.

Part of my job involves taking images of many different computers using Norton Ghost and saving them to external drives. One of these drives is a Western Digital MyPassport that is soon being re-purposed. When taking one of the images with this drive I accidentally clicked on the System Volume Information folder and, while I caught my error this time, saw that there were 2 other ghost files already saved in that location. I would like to pull these off of this drive and transfer them to one that will still be in use for storing images, but can't gain access to the System Volume Information folder outside of Ghost to do so, and the steps to access the folder on my computer don't seem to work for the drive (show hidden files and folders is selected, hide protected operating system files is unchecked, and system restore is turned off for the drive).

I'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?

Linksys/T-Mobile Hot Spot (wireless) ROUTER with Ethernet connections to 1) Home Phone, 2) iMAC PowerPC/OS X Leopard, 3) PC/Windows 7 32bit and 4) IOMEGA HOME MEDIA NETWORK HARD DRIVE (herein "NHD").
PERTINENT SYSTEM STATUS:The NHD contains 1) a "BACKUPS" folder with sub-folders containing scheduled & unscheduled backups and system images from both computers and 2) specific folders e.g. MOVIES.
THE PROBLEM:Upon attempting to open the "BACKUPS" folder on the NHD from the PC, a WINDOWS SECURITY panel opens 1) requesting a user name and NETWORK password to the NHD, 2) listing the PC name as a DOMAIN name and 3) a red "X" - Access Denied.
CONFLICTS & FACTS:1) As User/Administrator, I have not set any "folder" security/passwords, 2) I can open, view, edit and delete any of the other folders on the NHD from the PC and can open, view, edit, delete ALL folders from the iMAC 3) I have NO domain setup, only a WORK GROUP name, 4) Network access protection is OFF.
UPON SELECTING "BACKUPS" FOLDER PROPERTIES ON PC:
General Tab: ♦File Type > Share
Network Tab: ♦Computer Name > the NHD ?? ♦Computer Type > Windows NT 4.9 Server ??
♦Work Group > "WORKGROUP" (Control Panel System Info shows true Name)
Security Tab: ♦Object Name > \Iomega-....Backups
"You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings."

My power supply on my old comp died, so it was time to upgrade computers, I went from running windows XP to windows 7 now. I saved my old "previously upgraded" 320g wd internal drive to recover the data to my new machine. I got an external drive enclosure, installed everything but windows is telling me I don't have "access" to the drive. When I go into disk management, it sees the drive but it's not initialized, nor will it let me initialize it when I try.

I opened my external drive case and took the 3.5" hard drive out so that I could connect to the computer internally with a SATA cable because I don't have an external SATA cable and internal SATA interface. I started the Windows 7 Ultimate system. The computer screen remained on "Starting Windows" forever. If my memory serves me right, I remember I did manage to access it with another computer before. That computer has been out of service. At present I can access it while the drive is in the case connected with a USB cable. The Windows explorer shows all the partitions in the drive.

I am working on a Windows Vista laptop that will not boot. After trying all options on the vista laptop for recovery and failing I decided to put the main drive in an external case...hook it up to my Windows 7 laptop and scan for virus'.It found 2 items which after looking at the location of these infected files...they were in MY profile folder on my computer.....Yet the path said ("JDocuments and Settings/Justin Gray/........." ) Drive "J" is the external. My windows profile folder is on "C". So now im really confused....I opened up My Computer, click on drive J and opened up Documents and Settings only to find it was opening the Documents and Settings folder on my C drive....Almost like it created some weird worm hole in space time and connected the two so I CAN NOT look at the actual Documents and Settings folder on the drive...If I load up in Linux (Ubuntu) I can easily access the correct Documents and Settings Folder on the drive. I am having a hard time finding and installing AV software in linux so I can't scan the drive so I had to do it through windows instead.I did...after wanting to look in documents and settings, take owner ship of the external J drive.

Last night I was on the internet at home absolutely fine and my laptop automatically downloaded an update, since then I have been unable to connect to my wi-fi. I deleted the updates and was still unable to connect, so I tried to used a system recovery restore point and every one I use starts but fails to complete. So, I did a factory reset after around 8 hours of trying to sort it out today and I STILL have the same problem. I can plug in the cable to connect and my housemate is having absolutely no issues connecting and neither is my phone so now I am at a total loss what I should do to resolve this. Prior to the factory reset I was able to connect to the wi-fi but it was stating no network access/limited access and now it simply won't connect to my internet at all. It finds my full strength signal but will not connect. My drivers for the Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n card are the most up to date and the laptop (HP G62) says it is working fine.

I updated my windows last night. I get home today and try launching a program saved on my external HD. The program won't start because it says the program does not match my with my windows 7 64bit. I go into my external and notice that the program file (x64) now reads (x86). Strange, I think. So I then try to access the normal Program File, but it won't let me. Says it's corrupted and/or unreadable. Again, strange. I close the external and walk away. I come back to delete the program and reinstall, but when I go to open my external windows won't let me. It sees that it's there, but it lists it as having 0 used and 0 free space. Is there any way to gain access to the files inside? The movies, music, and programs on there I am not worried about losing. But I have a manuscript on there that I have yet to find saved somewhere else, along with some photos. I know, I know. I shouldn't have just saved the files there.

I moved a external USB drive formatted NTFS from an XP system to a Windows 7 system, and it will permanently stay on the Windows 7 system. I can't get any write or change access on the USB drive folders or files. I cannot change permissions in advanced mode, and it lists the file/directory owner as unknown in the group or user names box. It complains that I don't have administrator control, however I am logged in as administrator. How can I take ownership & change permissions on this drive?
