Can't Access "Documents And Settings" On External Drive
Jan 7, 2012
I am working on a Windows Vista laptop that will not boot. After trying all options on the vista laptop for recovery and failing I decided to put the main drive in an external case...hook it up to my Windows 7 laptop and scan for virus'.It found 2 items which after looking at the location of these infected files...they were in MY profile folder on my computer.....Yet the path said ("JDocuments and Settings/Justin Gray/........." ) Drive "J" is the external. My windows profile folder is on "C". So now im really confused....I opened up My Computer, click on drive J and opened up Documents and Settings only to find it was opening the Documents and Settings folder on my C drive....Almost like it created some weird worm hole in space time and connected the two so I CAN NOT look at the actual Documents and Settings folder on the drive...If I load up in Linux (Ubuntu) I can easily access the correct Documents and Settings Folder on the drive. I am having a hard time finding and installing AV software in linux so I can't scan the drive so I had to do it through windows instead.I did...after wanting to look in documents and settings, take owner ship of the external J drive.

I'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?

I did a search on this and I cannot find that the problem has been resolved, not in a way that works for me anyway.Issue: when I try to open C:Documents & Settings I get "acess denied". This despite that my being logged in as admin.I mean, I installed Windows 7 RC1 on the machine (and am the only user), before that the computer didn't even know it existed. Now all of a sudden access is denied me...who's gonna grant me access? God? It's so stoopid...Oh, and another thing - is there a way to preserve programs and settings and transfer this data to a new installation of Windows 7 RTM? I have installed what seems like a Gazillion programs (and every associated setting), utilities, Registry tweaks and what-have-you since I installed Windows 7 RC1. Probably 8-10 hours worth of work. It's not that I don't have the time, it just seems so unnecessary now that almost everything is just the way I want it.

I have two external drives that I'd like to share. I have them mapped as an X: and Y: drive. I go into advanced sharing settings > permissions, and add Full Control for the group "Everyone". I hit apply and it looks fine and dandy. When I reboot my machine the sharing settings are lost.
When the computer initially starts up Auto Play opens for both drives. Not sure if this has anything to do with it though. how to get my sharing settings to stick for both externals?

My external dvd/cd drive (Sony DRX S7OU W) previously worked from this computer running on Windows 7 but I now receive the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access them." The same dvd/cd drive continues to work on other computers. All other devices that I link to this port (camera, ipod) continue to function. I tried new firmware downloaded from Sony but this did not help.

my SSD drive was suddenly inaccessible after a reboot, so I put my backup spindle drive into my laptop to get it started. Because I have important files I need to access from my ssd I put that into a case and plugged it into the USB port. Now windows explorer just hangs forever trying to detect/access it! in Computer management I cannot see the disk partition but I can see the harddisk device in device manager.
In windows explorer I can see one drive letter assigned (there should be two drives on the ssd) but when I tried to access the drive it just hangs forever. It also hangs with any other methods I try to access it (chkdsk, data recovery programs, Testdisk by CGSecurity)!!I think the main issue is that the external ssd is locking up everytime some program tries to access it... perhaps if I can somehow remove this lock I might be able to attempt a data recovery.

External hard drive salvaged from computer running Windows XPEncased, plugged into USB on new computer running (not by choice) Windows 7(Know where this is going?) Given every permission and ownership to new computer to have its way with docs on external drive. Can't copy docs from external drive to new computer even in (basicithout networking) safe mode. (And haven't tried a mac.)Can I somehow change permissions or ownership on the EXTERNAL drive to access my own documents? Anything else?If I throw it against the wall, will that work? Who is this other administrator to give access, when I'm the only administrator?

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive and Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. I have a user setup for each member of my family on the computer. The maxtor drive was working fine uptil I decided that I wanted only myself to be able to access it only. The drive appeared as my K drive. I went to sharing and added myself as read/write access and removed the everyone share thinking that only I would be able to use the drive. I restarted my PC and now nobody can access it. When I plug the drive into the usb slot the drive whirs up as normal but there is no drive letter for it and it does not appear in device manager etc. I plugged it into my old XP machine and that cannot read it either..

This morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.
After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".
I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.
I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?

I am using Windows Seven ultimate x64 and I started having a problem when trying to access user's folder under documents and settings or users on any attached external hard drive on my computer. i didn't have this problem before, it started on the same installation of windows and without any changes to my system settings or user settings.
I am a computer tech and I use my computer to backup data before repairing computers so I attach the hard drive to my computer using a USB enclosure. This is limiting my work since I didn't find any solution yet. It's giving me the error below: "you don't currently have permission to access this folder" This is happening on any external hard drive I want to access the user's data.

Part of my job involves taking images of many different computers using Norton Ghost and saving them to external drives. One of these drives is a Western Digital MyPassport that is soon being re-purposed. When taking one of the images with this drive I accidentally clicked on the System Volume Information folder and, while I caught my error this time, saw that there were 2 other ghost files already saved in that location. I would like to pull these off of this drive and transfer them to one that will still be in use for storing images, but can't gain access to the System Volume Information folder outside of Ghost to do so, and the steps to access the folder on my computer don't seem to work for the drive (show hidden files and folders is selected, hide protected operating system files is unchecked, and system restore is turned off for the drive).

For years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.
With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.
The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.
I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.
I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.
Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?

Kaspersky tells me there is a 2 viruses in my Document and Settings and I have tried there and in USERS/All users, etc and it to is ACCESS IS DENIED and I want to confirm that Kaspersky DID delete all traces of that virus.
HOW do I get this get to these folder to check? Ask my mother or my priest for permission to access my own computer that i bought and paid for. Of course I am misguided as i believe that I should have access to my own computer.
But don't want to get started on my rant about Microsoft 7 and "permissions" and "access" to my computers. the ole "pay us but don't expect any access"
anyone know how to get around this madness?

My father bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I copied his documents (mostly word and excel) onto his new system, I had a phone call from his this evening saying he is unable to edit some word documents because of them being "secured and from an unrecognizable source". There must be a (policy) setting in Office 2010, Windows 7 or Avast I need to change to allow all of his documents to be editable I gather, if so where is it?

I originally came to this idea after wondering "Could I install windows on a wireless external hard drive?"But quickly realized that a wireless hard drive probably would not be detected during bios, and needs windows to run.I'm wondering though, if the environment variables of windows could be modified, so that when you run software that uses these variables to store temp data etc, it would be sent to an identical network drive, instead of the directory windows is actually installed on.Can this be achieved with some changes to the registry? And would the changes cause any problems with windows itself?Basically I want to trick windows into thinking that the entire "documents and settings" folder, is on the wireless drive. Not C: (windows installed drive).

I utilize Windows7 Home Premium 32-bit and a 500gb SeaGate FreeAgent external. Similarly, I have on numerous occasion deleted files and done some cleaning-up (primarily 'My Documents') to no real success because they all come back after having attached my external.I do not perform a Back-up /or/ Sync anything. I simply connect my external via USB in order to locate a saved document already on the external from previous. This is all I do and at some point (not sure if it is after the next reboot or when exactly) but, all deleted docs reappear.
