View 1 RepliesAwhile back i moved the folder or pointed my documents folder to another drive(external one) for it to back up. Now my friend does not like it since she has two my documents folder, one on the c drive and the other on the backup drive. How simple is it to move everything back to c: drive, and if so, how do i do it again, just move backup drive to c:drive

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a search on this and I cannot find that the problem has been resolved, not in a way that works for me anyway.Issue: when I try to open C:Documents & Settings I get "acess denied". This despite that my being logged in as admin.I mean, I installed Windows 7 RC1 on the machine (and am the only user), before that the computer didn't even know it existed. Now all of a sudden access is denied me...who's gonna grant me access? God? It's so stoopid...Oh, and another thing - is there a way to preserve programs and settings and transfer this data to a new installation of Windows 7 RTM? I have installed what seems like a Gazillion programs (and every associated setting), utilities, Registry tweaks and what-have-you since I installed Windows 7 RC1. Probably 8-10 hours worth of work. It's not that I don't have the time, it just seems so unnecessary now that almost everything is just the way I want it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.
With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.
The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.
I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.
I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.
Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?
I want to move all the libraries viz.documents, pictures, videos to different Drive i.e D in Windows 7

HOW do I get this get to these folder to check? Ask my mother or my priest for permission to access my own computer that i bought and paid for. Of course I am misguided as i believe that I should have access to my own computer.
But don't want to get started on my rant about Microsoft 7 and "permissions" and "access" to my computers. the ole "pay us but don't expect any access"
anyone know how to get around this madness?
My father bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I copied his documents (mostly word and excel) onto his new system, I had a phone call from his this evening saying he is unable to edit some word documents because of them being "secured and from an unrecognizable source". There must be a (policy) setting in Office 2010, Windows 7 or Avast I need to change to allow all of his documents to be editable I gather, if so where is it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI originally came to this idea after wondering "Could I install windows on a wireless external hard drive?"But quickly realized that a wireless hard drive probably would not be detected during bios, and needs windows to run.I'm wondering though, if the environment variables of windows could be modified, so that when you run software that uses these variables to store temp data etc, it would be sent to an identical network drive, instead of the directory windows is actually installed on.Can this be achieved with some changes to the registry? And would the changes cause any problems with windows itself?Basically I want to trick windows into thinking that the entire "documents and settings" folder, is on the wireless drive. Not C: (windows installed drive).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am working on a Windows Vista laptop that will not boot. After trying all options on the vista laptop for recovery and failing I decided to put the main drive in an external case...hook it up to my Windows 7 laptop and scan for virus'.It found 2 items which after looking at the location of these infected files...they were in MY profile folder on my computer.....Yet the path said ("JDocuments and Settings/Justin Gray/........." ) Drive "J" is the external. My windows profile folder is on "C". So now im really confused....I opened up My Computer, click on drive J and opened up Documents and Settings only to find it was opening the Documents and Settings folder on my C drive....Almost like it created some weird worm hole in space time and connected the two so I CAN NOT look at the actual Documents and Settings folder on the drive...If I load up in Linux (Ubuntu) I can easily access the correct Documents and Settings Folder on the drive. I am having a hard time finding and installing AV software in linux so I can't scan the drive so I had to do it through windows instead.I did...after wanting to look in documents and settings, take owner ship of the external J drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using the build 7600.
It all started when i inserted a SD card. It didn't work so I inserted the SD card on my camera and plugged it in by usb. The second I inserted the usb to my laptop my usb mouse turned off and my wlan just literally vanished(it wasn't even in device manager.) Usb root hub with exclamation marks appeared in the device manager.
I tried uninstalling them and letting Windows 7 install them again and wlan wont come back and the mouse wont work.
I also tried uninstalling everything below usb conrtollers and generic volume and still no wifi.
I tried installing the drivers from the manufacturer of my laptop after uninstalling the old ones and still none
I was able to get the wlan running again after uninstalling everything below usb controllers in the device manager I restarted my comp in the middle of it cuz wlan reappeared and if i waited for it to finish wlan would disappear.
Now Every time I plug in a usb device wlan disappears and everything starts all over again..
I've been running various Windows 7 Betas and RCs on virtual machines and spare PCs for a while with no issues, so when I got access to the RTM I was quite confident (probably overly so) to upgrade my laptop from Vista.
Right after the install (ironically enough, from a USB), everything was working fine, until I plugged in my iPod, which installed the apple driver successfully, then informed me that the device was unplugged before the USB Mass Storage driver installed (it wasn't). I proceeded to try the other three USB ports on my computer (all four worked fine in Vista, and still work fine in XP and Ubuntu). None worked. I tried a thumb drive with an internal LED, and it appears that the device receives power for about half a second, before cutting off. Running a system restore back to whenever they were last working fixes the problem, I can plug in a USB stick, and it works fine for a couple of minutes, then its useless again.
The chipset is an Intel GMA965 express series, using the most recent driver (8.15.10.1825, for RC1). I've tried rolling back to the Vista driver, and the Vista driver in compatibility mode, to no avail.
Additionally, I've tried uninstalling all of the "USB Root Hub"s in the device manager, and scanning for new hardware, and uninstalling all of the USB controllers and then scanning for new hardware, still no luck. The issue that windows gives is
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
For which a fix for a similar problem (albeit with CD/DVD Drives) in XP was to delete the registry key, so I navigated my way to
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
And was first told access is denied. I took ownership, fixed permissions, and it still refused to delete (although, in trying to check what exactly the error message was, it just deleted now, although I'm not hopeful it will help)
I've disabled every reference to USB power saving mode in every power profile.
Most recently, I've tried the most recent Intel Device Chipset Installer, which installed successfully, but makes no difference. I also tried the built in troubleshooter, which recognises the issue, reinstalls all the drivers, and tells me it works/doesn't work, and then either way, it doesn't work. Although the troubleshooter does identify if there is a device plugged in for two of the four USB ports, it tries to install drivers, and fails.
In searching the internet for the last few days, I haven't been able to find a solution (although I have found several people with similar problems, one the same, all of which unsolved)
I would really prefer not to do a clean install - the reason I upgraded in the first place was because I had far too many programs installed to make it worth reinstalling all of them. I'm open to downgrading to vista, if its do-able with a clean.
If I browse my Windows 7 PC via UNC (\192.168.0.x) on an XP PC I am unable to get a list of shares. If I Directly open \192.168.0.xShareName that will work perfectly.
I have a vista PC on the same network and that can see the root fine. The only thing that I can think of is that SP1 has done something. but not sure why it would only effect showing the list of shares. As a side note in the event log i see the "Software Protection Service" keeps stopping and then starting, I tried googling it but no one seems to know if this is usual behavior to check the licence or if it shouldn't stop.
I'm looking to find where i can download something, somewhere, over the rainbow some newest bestestsss drivers for usb 2.0. I tried looking myself on the web but it seems a few things require you to pay money for an upgrade of all drivers on your system. I'd just like to upgrade my usb ports if possible I seem to have trouble with em.It says it has 6.1.7600.16385 (in 2006 so theres gotta be somethin better) installed I found a few downloads but they were actually older 5.x.xxx.

This caught my attention today when I was installing the newest round of windows 7 updates, and has me curious, can't say I've ever seen it before so I've looked around and it seems that it used to only be for XP. Any way, from what I can tell from the description it seems to only be needed if your running internet explorer, I don't use IE on this computer (my gaming rig) and don't see why I'd ever have to, I do most of my browsing on my phone, or laptop.

It has always been slow but when I opened it it was very very slow. I saw a sign from AVG, with a window box saying AVGDIUX.. an error message. I made a mistake and pulled out the battery. Now when I switch it on it only goes to a start up repair screen. It runs a check for problems, tells me it cannot fix it automatically and then offers to shut down the computer. Scan results are:
Number of repair attempts: 5
Session details
System Disk = DeviceHarddisk0
Windows directory = D:Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1

I switched it off and pressed F8 repeatedly at start up. I can get to the F8 screen with the different options. I tried to go to safe mode/safe mode with command prompts but automatically goes to the start up repair screen and then goes through the same process i.e. saying it is doing a check and then that it can`t fix it etc.

AVG rescue disk scan found 13 password protected files that were renamed. Broke AVG and required a reinstall. Password protected files were back by the end of the day. I do not think 'boot' should be there as I already have a system folder named 'Boot' which is identical to the 'boot' folder. However, I cannot remove it as the computer will not let me. I tried to delete 'clean', however I am unable to - it says that the item is no longer located in C:. When I open the 'clean' folder it contains a subfolder 'log' which contains one folder, which, when I try to open it, claims that 'C:cleanlog2011-08-12_18:29boot-repair07 refers to a location that is unavailable'. But with 7 Ultimate, even with full rights, the program cannot access the file. However, I've found that Ultimate has a security app called Applocker. I have been reading up about Applocker and the exceptions that you can use with it to free up files on the Root directory, but since the file is a .net extension (not on the exception list of extensions), I can't add an exception to Applocker.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just did a custom install from Vista to Windows 7 with an upgrade disc. After completing the setup, deleting windows.old, and reinstalling all of my programs, I noticed that there were old folders on the C: drive. It is as if it didn't move anything from the root drive to the windows.old file.
I'm annoyed at myself for not noticing it sooner. Now I don't want to do another install since I spent all that time reinstalling the programs and configuring them for personal use.
I'm tempted to go in and just delete the old folders from the root drive, but I'm nervous. Honestly, I can't be certain of what should and shouldn't be there.
Is there anyway I can tell which folders on the root drive are leftovers? I thought about deleting according to the date modified stamp, but I'm not certain that is safe either.
Can anyone advise me? I really don't want to do another install of Windows 7, but I was pretty excited about starting with a true clean slate. I just can't help but wonder what else it left behind.
What I currently use is CCleaner & Advanced System Care. I guess what I'm asking, is there anything that is more on a professional grade? A power scrubber that small businesses would use? I want to clear out unneeded registry files, left over install files, left over stuff from programs I have uninstalled, just ...my technical term is "crap" left on the operating system hard drive. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
