"documents And Settings" Junction Disappeared?
Apr 25, 2011
i've been on 7-64 now for some 3 months. i used to see "documents and settings" -folder, including "all users" on my explorer tree.from what i understand, this was a junction/shortcut to c:users , however, the whole documents and settings folder is no longer appearing, and with it a bunch of shortcuts that were in the start menu of all users are missing.this leaves me with a creepy feeling that a lot of other program settings could be now gone.how to restore the junction? - i assume that many legacy programs will not work correctly without documents and settings on the system.

When I click on "My Documents" I often then go to the Desktop by clicking to the right of a small window/bar at the top. It then opens up "Desktop", which is just above it in the"family tree". I click on "Desktop" to quickly go to it.
Suddenly this bar has disappeared. How to I get it back again?

I did a search on this and I cannot find that the problem has been resolved, not in a way that works for me anyway.Issue: when I try to open C:Documents & Settings I get "acess denied". This despite that my being logged in as admin.I mean, I installed Windows 7 RC1 on the machine (and am the only user), before that the computer didn't even know it existed. Now all of a sudden access is denied me...who's gonna grant me access? God? It's so stoopid...Oh, and another thing - is there a way to preserve programs and settings and transfer this data to a new installation of Windows 7 RTM? I have installed what seems like a Gazillion programs (and every associated setting), utilities, Registry tweaks and what-have-you since I installed Windows 7 RC1. Probably 8-10 hours worth of work. It's not that I don't have the time, it just seems so unnecessary now that almost everything is just the way I want it.

For years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.
With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.
The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.
I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.
I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.
Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?

Kaspersky tells me there is a 2 viruses in my Document and Settings and I have tried there and in USERS/All users, etc and it to is ACCESS IS DENIED and I want to confirm that Kaspersky DID delete all traces of that virus.
HOW do I get this get to these folder to check? Ask my mother or my priest for permission to access my own computer that i bought and paid for. Of course I am misguided as i believe that I should have access to my own computer.
But don't want to get started on my rant about Microsoft 7 and "permissions" and "access" to my computers. the ole "pay us but don't expect any access"
anyone know how to get around this madness?

My father bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I copied his documents (mostly word and excel) onto his new system, I had a phone call from his this evening saying he is unable to edit some word documents because of them being "secured and from an unrecognizable source". There must be a (policy) setting in Office 2010, Windows 7 or Avast I need to change to allow all of his documents to be editable I gather, if so where is it?

I originally came to this idea after wondering "Could I install windows on a wireless external hard drive?"But quickly realized that a wireless hard drive probably would not be detected during bios, and needs windows to run.I'm wondering though, if the environment variables of windows could be modified, so that when you run software that uses these variables to store temp data etc, it would be sent to an identical network drive, instead of the directory windows is actually installed on.Can this be achieved with some changes to the registry? And would the changes cause any problems with windows itself?Basically I want to trick windows into thinking that the entire "documents and settings" folder, is on the wireless drive. Not C: (windows installed drive).

I'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?

I have a C:Users *directory junction* mapped to D:Users. I used the following to achieve this: "mklink /J C:Users D:Users".if I do a *system image*, will my files on D:Users be backed up? Or should I config another separate *file backup* (not system image) job especially for D:Users? In case D:Users gets backed up, when I restore it will my files be placed in C:Users ou D:Users?

I am working on a Windows Vista laptop that will not boot. After trying all options on the vista laptop for recovery and failing I decided to put the main drive in an external case...hook it up to my Windows 7 laptop and scan for virus'.It found 2 items which after looking at the location of these infected files...they were in MY profile folder on my computer.....Yet the path said ("JDocuments and Settings/Justin Gray/........." ) Drive "J" is the external. My windows profile folder is on "C". So now im really confused....I opened up My Computer, click on drive J and opened up Documents and Settings only to find it was opening the Documents and Settings folder on my C drive....Almost like it created some weird worm hole in space time and connected the two so I CAN NOT look at the actual Documents and Settings folder on the drive...If I load up in Linux (Ubuntu) I can easily access the correct Documents and Settings Folder on the drive. I am having a hard time finding and installing AV software in linux so I can't scan the drive so I had to do it through windows instead.I did...after wanting to look in documents and settings, take owner ship of the external J drive.

Recently I had to re-install Windows, but beforehand I had setup a directory junction for my Google Chrome installation. I did this because my boot drive is an SSD and I wanted to limit some of the writes to it because of cookies, etc. So I setup a directory junction from my C drive (ssd) to my other regular hard drive. Since re-installing Windows, though, I cannot successfully create one. Each time I try and make one, I check my hard drive properties and see that when I am using Google Chrome it is still writing to my SSD,

As I didnt want any User specific Data on my System Drive, after installing Windows 7 back then I was looking to move the Users Folder to a different Drive.I thought symlinks would be perfect for the task and so I copied C:Users over to E:Users, deleted C:Users and made C:Users a Junction to E:Users.Everything seemed to be working perfectly until today when I was reverting the System to a Restore Point created a few hours ago.Now after the reboot everything seems to be gone and Hell is open... When I tried to login with my Account I use for daily Operation it said "Preparing Desktop" at which Point I knew something terrible happened. As I had already guessed I had an empty default Desktop and all my Stuff, Settings and so on was not there. Additionally a Popup appeared notifing me that I was using a temporary Profile. So I tried to login using the built in Administrator Account, but that too was a temporary Account as the Balloon Tip showed me. I quickly checked E:Users and everything is still there its just not getting loaded for some weird reason.

I am trying to move my thumbnails cache from my SSD to a ramdrive, to stop excessive writes and also speed up the cache.I am using Dataram Ramdisk, and have moved FF cache, IE cache and temp files, and user TEMP and TMP files (but not system TEMP and TMP, which I moved to a HDD) so far.Moving the thumbnails cache is a bit more tricky, but should be doable using junction.

Now, just 3 days ago It started the BSOD issue.I realize that my GPU was the cause of this issue. When playing games or open 3d applications the temp goes 30C to 72C (In 15 seconds) then 82C - 85C constant (in about 30 seconds). Now I've been using MSI afterburner to check my temps and at fulload my GPU will be at 62-72C max temperature but now it's 10C even higher then before. No, I haven't fiddled with the voltage I set the GPU voltage to 1.037v which is the safest (been running this almost 8 months!). The GPU is the GTX 560ti.Is there a way to set the GPU on default settings or reset GPU settings in cmd or other professional way. I have uninstalled the drivers, uninstalling GPU, disabled GPU, disabled PCI-E slot and so on by using device manager and the issue still persist. Yes, I also have clean the GPU perfectly and still the temperature goes up to 82 seconds at 30seconds-45seconds. Yes, I have checked everything is set correctly and so on, I am a PC Tech.
Is the GPU damaged? Yes I have looked at this thread: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try Mainly, I know its the GPU straight away, I tried checking old drivers, new drivers, another GPU overclocked software such as GPU tweak and EVGA Precision. I am thinking it's the GPU is damaged or the PCI-E is damaged (I have another PCI-E slot on my system and the issue still there). It might be the PCI-E frequency? but it's set to 100 which it meant to be, I just hope is software related because I don't have the money to buy a new card. Did the dump files help?

The Dell Inspiron, with Windows 7, we bought our daughter last year worked fine until she left last May for an internship. We ran scan disc before the lap top was packed. When she arrived at her destinaction it did not work. According to the Geek squad, the hardware works fine, but there is not an operation system on the laptop. The laptop did not come with discs, but it has the Windows 7 label on the back with the product code. But when emailing Micrsoft support, they only want the PID which can't be retrieved from a computer that doesn't have an operating system.

So, I'm on Home Premium 64 bit, and today everything was working just fine. After one reboot, nearly all the icons on my desktop were blank. As in, the individual icon pictures were just default. Every program I try to open all pops up with "Such and such file has been moved or Deleted" When running programs manually, I keep coming up with "Cannot run .ini or something to that effect if that helps. . The only thing I can get to work are Malwarebytes, Avira and Internet Explorer so far that I can find. No viruses have been detected by either of the scans and I just have no idea what to do from here. All MP3 files are also useless due to every media player that I have now appearing missing including WMP, Winamp, ITunes and such.
I really have no idea what to do here. The last thing I'd want is to have to format the computer. I have one 4gig thumb drive to back up some things, but that's about all I have. If those files aren't corrupted as well. I have no way of opening them to see.Tried a system restore before posting this and the restore failed.I know I am probably not providing all the information that I can, but if you need any more, please let me know. I'll be monitoring this thread all day.

I have had Windows 7 installed on my PC.Last night I installed Windows XP Professional (as i have some programs that do not work on 7) on my PC. I had intended it to be a sort of double boot with Windows 7 i.e. i wanted to have a boot selecter where i can choose whether to boot XP or 7. However my PC now directly boots into XP and does not allow me boot into 7.Is there a way to re-insert Windows 7 into the mbr so that i can have a choose which OS i want to boot?.

I am trying to fix a Samsung laptop for a friend. She admits to having 'fiddled' with the networking applets in Control Panel with the result that neither LAN nor Wi-fi functions any more.I have noticed that I am unable to use the GUI to access IPv4 Properties because the button is greyed out. Also greyed out is Uninstall. The only button available is Install. I have tried that, but after rebooting the situation appears to be the same. I have tried using the command prompt as Administrator and using NETSH to uninstall IP, install it, reset it etc, rebooting every time but without any noticeable change afterwards. Also tried NETSH WINSOCK RESET after the above. I have also tried the above in recovery mode with networking enabled. Again, no change!Unfortunately, the model does not have a CD drive. However, it has USB ports. Fortunately, I do have a generic 32-bit Win 7 Home Premium CD - which is the operating system installed on the PC. So I could copy the CD in one way or another to an external USB drive and work from that if necessary. If I knew what I had to do!There is a lot of valuable data on the PC and I don't want to be responsible for losing it. Of course, I could try backing it all up but she has saved stuff all over the place and I am bound to miss something! Yes, I could copy the entire disk ...... I know!! But we would still have to find and retrieve the data later.

I've looked everywhere, and have followed various suggestions found on internet (namely on Windows 7 Forums), but to no avail. The previous wallpaper was NOT a pre-installed Microsoft wallpaper, but an image I had directly installed some months ago.I would do a search on my laptop, but cannot remember the title of the photo.Florio

my computer last night randomly shut off while loading a tv show off Internet. upon restarting windows failed to boot. when prompted with restore and recovery it failed. unable to access safe mode and when it says it is recovering it just says it is finished with no progress restarts to no avail. upon looking at command prompt diskpart, my c partition(30gb) no longer is visible or exists. this is where my windows seven was stored. so i now only have my e drive partition which is a (1 tb drive) repairs do not work, the only option i have is to install on my e drive which warns me it will overwrite my data. i would like my c drive back and be able to boot successfully.
