View 2 RepliesI have a HP mini, microsoft 2005 pretty sure its a Windows 7.Basically I pulled the battery out by accident at a bad time. I had left the laptop on all night. It has always been slow but when I opened it it was very very slow. I saw a sign from AVG, with a window box saying AVGDIUX.. an error message. I made a mistake and pulled out the battery. Now when I switch it on it only goes to a start up repair screen. It runs a check for problems, tells me it cannot fix it automatically and then offers to shut down the computer. Scan results are:
Number of repair attempts: 5
Session details
System Disk = DeviceHarddisk0
Windows directory = D:Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1
[code]....
I switched it off and pressed F8 repeatedly at start up. I can get to the F8 screen with the different options. I tried to go to safe mode/safe mode with command prompts but automatically goes to the start up repair screen and then goes through the same process i.e. saying it is doing a check and then that it can`t fix it etc.
I have been using a registry cleaner that has removed some system keys. The computer runs most stuff okay, but I am getting some failures on things like the window that used to come up and ask what to do when I plugged in a usb. Researching this is how I found that some registry keys were missing. I have been trying to get to the install / repair the exsisting winows part of the install cd that comes up when installing the program. I did it once before, but haven't been abble to get there again. I am not talking about the first repair options that come up at first, like restore from a restore point or from a system image. It's the one that comes up during the install process where you can choose a drive and format. The repair choice in that section uses the install cd and not a backed up file. The registry cleaner I was using did back up the registry every time it was run, but replaced it with the new back up each time. and the system image was replaced a few days ago, so no help. By the way, I no longer use the registry cleaner
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I open regedit.exe and go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc not all existing keys are shown.
In fact these invisible or virtualized keys are only shown when opening regedit.exe with the Run as administrator option.
What's the mechanism behind this?
I have a windows 7 pc and various users who use it. Each user that logs on creates a local profile ok. However when you logon with the admin account and open the registry editor and look under the HKEY_USERS key only the S-1-5-2xxxx entry is there for the admin account and the standard system entries but each key for every user that has logged onto the pc is not displayed.Under windows XP you where able to see entries for all users who had logged onto that pc. Has something changed with Windows 7 by design or is there something wrong with the installation/setup of this machine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedPrevious suggestions for removing residual file names from "Save/Save As" dialog boxes involve deleting the following two keys from Registry (complete paths/strings omitted from this thread inquiry):
"LastVisitedPidlMRU", and
"OpenSavePidlMRU"
I noticed though that, in addition to those two keys in that Registry location, there is another & similar key entitled "LastVisitedPidlMRULegacy".
1) Is it advisable to also delete that third "...Legacy" key as well, and if not, why not?
2) What is the function of that third "...Legacy" key?
3) What would removing it do, or not do?
A few days ago, I logged in and my desktop and files were wiped clean and I got this message: "You have been logged on with a temporary profile. To fix this, log off and try logging on later. Please see the event log for details or contact your system admin." I shut down and tried again a half hour later and it was fine. Every day for the past few days, the same thing has been happening and yesterday it took about 8 reboots to get my regular profile up.
This is a new PC that I got late last year, and there are no signs of a virus or any other problems. I have not touched my profile or made any changes. This came out of nowhere. A brief search online has brought up some suggestions of changing the registry keys, but that can be extremely dangerous unless I know exactly what I'm doing.
I'm modifying an old game.. including patches, and modifications. I want to make my own installer using WinRar but WinRar doesn't do registry keys. I thought I'd make a self executing batch file with all my needed registry keys and point WinRar to that during install.

I have tried merging in safe boot mode but I still get the same messages.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe program works fine with Win 7 Professional and Home Premium. In XP I could just give full rights to the user and all was well. But with 7 Ultimate, even with full rights, the program cannot access the file. However, I've found that Ultimate has a security app called Applocker. I have been reading up about Applocker and the exceptions that you can use with it to free up files on the Root directory, but since the file is a .net extension (not on the exception list of extensions), I can't add an exception to Applocker.

I ran an analysis on my laptop for defrag using auslogics as I haven't done one in a year and it also told me that I had junk files and registry errors etc that I needed to get rid of before defragging. I've run Ccleaner, Glary utilities and advanced systemcare free and it still tells me there are files/errors to get rid of. I don't really want to buy a program atm just to get rid of these if theres a perfectly good free program I can use - does anyone know of anything else other than the ones mentioned that will clear this up? Is it essential that I do

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a new laptop but it has windows 7. 1 of the extremely huge problems this operating system has is this absurd thing where you cant arrange your own files in the order that you want.Im not gna waste my time ranting on here as it wont make any difference, but it does astound me that microsoft would employ such thickos who were unable to create an OS that was capable of offering such a basic function! i followed the (this) registry-edit steps lastnight to enable free-positioning of my files (unawave. de/windows-7-tipps/disable-sorting-auto-arrange.html?lang=EN).I did it lastnight and it worked perfectly!I then turned my laptop off as it needed to install its daily updates, but when i restarted it i can no longer move my files around in my pictures/videos/or my music folders!Photo/video files in other folders can still be moved around freely, however as all my pictures and videos are saved by default into those 2 folders this causes me a huge problem!

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was fixing a laptop that was having several issues, (special keys wouldn't work properly, internet explorer would crash, PDF files wouldn't open, etc) and I found a suspicious file (C:User<user>AppDataRoamingElofenmoma.exe) that was booting on startup. Virustotal hit me with only 3 results for a trojan, which is actually quite low, but this file was clearly the problem, the details seemed to be in russian and it's Regedit entry was random letters.
So I cleaned all evidence of this file and now the keyboard works properly, but I'm still having problems with executable. Most of the times when I open a program nothing shows up, yet the process is running, after opening it 3 or 4 times one window finally opens, but there's still 3 or 4 idle processes before it with no window in sight. Some times when I force close the first process all the other windows suddenly show up. I also noticed that the processes for setups, chrome, internet explorer tend to stay idle even after closing them normally (in the program itself, manually closing the process works).Usually I would just format the PC, but this is a very complicated PC to format, the owner has tons of certificates that he needs and most of them he doesn't even remember how to reinstall them again.
get windows xp vista and Windows 7 'ALL' Default Registry files?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using the build 7600.
It all started when i inserted a SD card. It didn't work so I inserted the SD card on my camera and plugged it in by usb. The second I inserted the usb to my laptop my usb mouse turned off and my wlan just literally vanished(it wasn't even in device manager.) Usb root hub with exclamation marks appeared in the device manager.
I tried uninstalling them and letting Windows 7 install them again and wlan wont come back and the mouse wont work.
I also tried uninstalling everything below usb conrtollers and generic volume and still no wifi.
I tried installing the drivers from the manufacturer of my laptop after uninstalling the old ones and still none
I was able to get the wlan running again after uninstalling everything below usb controllers in the device manager I restarted my comp in the middle of it cuz wlan reappeared and if i waited for it to finish wlan would disappear.
Now Every time I plug in a usb device wlan disappears and everything starts all over again..
I've been running various Windows 7 Betas and RCs on virtual machines and spare PCs for a while with no issues, so when I got access to the RTM I was quite confident (probably overly so) to upgrade my laptop from Vista.
Right after the install (ironically enough, from a USB), everything was working fine, until I plugged in my iPod, which installed the apple driver successfully, then informed me that the device was unplugged before the USB Mass Storage driver installed (it wasn't). I proceeded to try the other three USB ports on my computer (all four worked fine in Vista, and still work fine in XP and Ubuntu). None worked. I tried a thumb drive with an internal LED, and it appears that the device receives power for about half a second, before cutting off. Running a system restore back to whenever they were last working fixes the problem, I can plug in a USB stick, and it works fine for a couple of minutes, then its useless again.
The chipset is an Intel GMA965 express series, using the most recent driver (8.15.10.1825, for RC1). I've tried rolling back to the Vista driver, and the Vista driver in compatibility mode, to no avail.
Additionally, I've tried uninstalling all of the "USB Root Hub"s in the device manager, and scanning for new hardware, and uninstalling all of the USB controllers and then scanning for new hardware, still no luck. The issue that windows gives is
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
For which a fix for a similar problem (albeit with CD/DVD Drives) in XP was to delete the registry key, so I navigated my way to
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
And was first told access is denied. I took ownership, fixed permissions, and it still refused to delete (although, in trying to check what exactly the error message was, it just deleted now, although I'm not hopeful it will help)
I've disabled every reference to USB power saving mode in every power profile.
Most recently, I've tried the most recent Intel Device Chipset Installer, which installed successfully, but makes no difference. I also tried the built in troubleshooter, which recognises the issue, reinstalls all the drivers, and tells me it works/doesn't work, and then either way, it doesn't work. Although the troubleshooter does identify if there is a device plugged in for two of the four USB ports, it tries to install drivers, and fails.
In searching the internet for the last few days, I haven't been able to find a solution (although I have found several people with similar problems, one the same, all of which unsolved)
I would really prefer not to do a clean install - the reason I upgraded in the first place was because I had far too many programs installed to make it worth reinstalling all of them. I'm open to downgrading to vista, if its do-able with a clean.
If I browse my Windows 7 PC via UNC (\192.168.0.x) on an XP PC I am unable to get a list of shares. If I Directly open \192.168.0.xShareName that will work perfectly.
I have a vista PC on the same network and that can see the root fine. The only thing that I can think of is that SP1 has done something. but not sure why it would only effect showing the list of shares. As a side note in the event log i see the "Software Protection Service" keeps stopping and then starting, I tried googling it but no one seems to know if this is usual behavior to check the licence or if it shouldn't stop.
