Ran ComboFix, Now All Registry Keys Marked For Deletion?
Dec 12, 2011
I have a serious problem on a work laptop. I have some sort of malware.I believe I got it from downloading pdf files but I'm not sure. The symptoms are I am getting a lot of disk type errors. Also, my desktopicons are mostly gone. Also there were a bunch of windows popping up.My Desktop walpaper is now black rather than the default. Now, after running ComboFix, everything I try to run says Illegal Operationattempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion

I have network sharing issues and I believe the problem is that I cannot turn on file/printer sharing. When I click the button under advance sharing settings for file/printer and hit save (as an admin) it just goes back to off. Under Services, the Server option which is on automatic does not start. When I try to start it, it says:Windows could not start the Server service on Local Computer. Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

I have been using a registry cleaner that has removed some system keys. The computer runs most stuff okay, but I am getting some failures on things like the window that used to come up and ask what to do when I plugged in a usb. Researching this is how I found that some registry keys were missing. I have been trying to get to the install / repair the exsisting winows part of the install cd that comes up when installing the program. I did it once before, but haven't been abble to get there again. I am not talking about the first repair options that come up at first, like restore from a restore point or from a system image. It's the one that comes up during the install process where you can choose a drive and format. The repair choice in that section uses the install cd and not a backed up file. The registry cleaner I was using did back up the registry every time it was run, but replaced it with the new back up each time. and the system image was replaced a few days ago, so no help. By the way, I no longer use the registry cleaner

When I open regedit.exe and go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc not all existing keys are shown.
In fact these invisible or virtualized keys are only shown when opening regedit.exe with the Run as administrator option.
What's the mechanism behind this?

I have a windows 7 pc and various users who use it. Each user that logs on creates a local profile ok. However when you logon with the admin account and open the registry editor and look under the HKEY_USERS key only the S-1-5-2xxxx entry is there for the admin account and the standard system entries but each key for every user that has logged onto the pc is not displayed.Under windows XP you where able to see entries for all users who had logged onto that pc. Has something changed with Windows 7 by design or is there something wrong with the installation/setup of this machine.

Previous suggestions for removing residual file names from "Save/Save As" dialog boxes involve deleting the following two keys from Registry (complete paths/strings omitted from this thread inquiry):
"LastVisitedPidlMRU", and
"OpenSavePidlMRU"
I noticed though that, in addition to those two keys in that Registry location, there is another & similar key entitled "LastVisitedPidlMRULegacy".
1) Is it advisable to also delete that third "...Legacy" key as well, and if not, why not?
2) What is the function of that third "...Legacy" key?
3) What would removing it do, or not do?

A few days ago, I logged in and my desktop and files were wiped clean and I got this message: "You have been logged on with a temporary profile. To fix this, log off and try logging on later. Please see the event log for details or contact your system admin." I shut down and tried again a half hour later and it was fine. Every day for the past few days, the same thing has been happening and yesterday it took about 8 reboots to get my regular profile up.
This is a new PC that I got late last year, and there are no signs of a virus or any other problems. I have not touched my profile or made any changes. This came out of nowhere. A brief search online has brought up some suggestions of changing the registry keys, but that can be extremely dangerous unless I know exactly what I'm doing.

I'm modifying an old game.. including patches, and modifications. I want to make my own installer using WinRar but WinRar doesn't do registry keys. I thought I'd make a self executing batch file with all my needed registry keys and point WinRar to that during install.

I am having problems running Morrowind, due to my MP3 file association be off, screwed up by another program or something, but I need to fix my registry and when I try to merge a file with the correct association I get a registry error saying I cannot import it and that not all the keys were imported. I have tried merging in safe boot mode but I still get the same messages.

I did a very stupid thing and now need assistance. I have redirect malware or something on my machine.A search on the topic, talked about using ComboFix as part of a solution. I downloaded it, installed it and it started running immediately, before I could do anything else.I know that was not wise. Now trying to start anything results in "Illegal operation on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
System is Windows 7 Professional.

My computer has been lagging for about two weeks now. Figured I had a problem so I scanned it with a bunch of AV software (all in safe mode) to include: MSE, Malwarebytes, ClamAV, Hitman Pro, Bitdefender, and Spybot. ClamAV found two trojans and removed them, and I thought all was well with the world. I was wrong. Windows has been crashing and basic programs such as Outlook and Chrome have been sucking up major memory and freezing my system. So I downloaded it and ran the whole process. Like I said I was desperate. It wasn't until after it was finished, when I read the logfile and the quarantined-items file, that I realized that I was in over my head. I did some more research and found that I in no way should have been messing around with such a program, especially with my lack of IT background.

run ComboFix to get rid of the spyware, I got rid of it but in the process ComboFix deleted some of my files and placed them in Qoobox. How can I get those files back? Its really important as I invested lots of time on working with these files, they are .xml type ones. Also for finding them I used Pandora Recovery, I was able to recover these files with it but they were all 0KB. I have also not found any of this files in C:\QooBox\QuarantinePandora recovery shows that the files are located at C:\Qoobox\Test, but there is nothing there. [URL]

ComboFix was recommended to me in the past, so I disabled avast! and I ran ComboFix as an administrator. Once it was finished, my laptop rebooted and I was presented with the "Preparing Log Report" screen, so I eventually closed ComboFix. Nothing would run until I rebooted and now everything seems to have gone back to the way it was (sluggish performance included.)After some quick research, I came to realize that running ComboFix without assistance is a bad idea. I'd like to make sure I haven't done any damage to my system and, if possible, improve its performance.
My specs are as follows:
Asus G50VT (BestBuy edition)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core2 Duo P7450 (2.13GHz, dual core)
4GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 9800M GS 512MB
Aftermarket Broadcom WiFi adapter (I needed this to run Mac OS X alongside Windows and Ubuntu, but only Windows is installed now.)
Also, due to reheating, I recently removed the heatsinks from the CPU & CPU, cleaned out dust and applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease.

While windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.

i not using english OS at the time, so i directly translated the message, but the actuall mesage is:The selected volume is on a dynamic disk when i select the location to save.hi, I so just reinstalled my os a few days ago, and today, i finally finish installing all the basic programs, so i opened up windows back up and select my data drive to backup on (D: ) but under it, theres that yellow triangle notification saying that the selected partition is on a active drive.for my understanding, active drive is only suppose to be my C: drive, so i opened up diskmanagement to check, and C: drive is actually inactive, but it is my system drive tried marking D as inactive with diskpart, but it doesnt change anything, it still says it is active, and if i mark C as active in diskmanagement, the OS wont load. So i put my Windows 7 disk back in and change it back to what it was

I started O&O partition manager and accidentally pressed active on partition C and now I cannot boot windows...
I am using build 7600 x86 I loaded up the windows 7 iso on a usb memory and booted from it and chose repair, it said it found things to repair, i pressed ok, it rebooted but it did not help, now I chose from the repair menu to automatically search and fix, it said startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically and it want to send information about this problem, I wonder how it figured on doing that...
oh yes i started the repair again and pressed command promt and followed this guide: MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record and the first thing it said about D being the "DVD" was wrong in my case, it was E and from then on the guide was excally like in my case and I completed the guide, rebooted and still the same message "BOOTMGR is missing Press ctrl alt del to restart"
So what can i do to fix this? without needing to reinstall windows.

My friend recently had her computer upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. She used the Vista StickyNotes program to keep track of important information. I told her that this program wasn't intended for permanent information storage, but she liked it because it was simple. She upgraded her computer to Windows 7, and now her sticky notes are gone.
My question is this: Is there any way to retrieve those old sticky notes?
I told her in all honesty that I think they are gone unless she wants to pay big bucks to go to a forensic type agency that could pull the information off. I just need another opinion. I hope I'm wrong.
I also hope I gave enough information and explained the situation with enough detail.
