View 3 RepliesI'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit, but when I used my back up recover program, all my files are on my desk top, and root c doesn't seem to contain doc and settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAwhile back i moved the folder or pointed my documents folder to another drive(external one) for it to back up. Now my friend does not like it since she has two my documents folder, one on the c drive and the other on the backup drive. How simple is it to move everything back to c: drive, and if so, how do i do it again, just move backup drive to c:drive
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, Windows 7 has decided that files in my root directory C: are music files. In every other folder, I can click on Properties, then choose Customize, then choose "Optimize This Folder For..." and choose the type I want - Documents, Photos, Music, General Items. You know the drill. If I click on Properties when I'm in the root C: drive, I get a pie chart showing me how much space I have left and lots of other choices, none of which let me view my files as "General Items."I don't want to sort my files in my c: directory by artist. There are no artists. Stop being helpful, Windows 7, and thinking I want it this way. I want it to be General Items. How do I do that?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been experienceing crashes with my computer for a while and have been ziping my minidump files and putting them on a fourm but now the minidump file has a lock icon on it. It also wont let me zip the dump files anymore. I tried changing the permissions of the users but when ever i change anything from alow or deny it says access denied.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI probably did a dump thing (only the 100,000th in my lifetime!). I backed up my working folders on my XP desktop into a zip file where the options were set to save the relative path of each file. I then extracted the backup zip file to my Win 7 laptop, not remembering that Win 7's folder structure is different than XP's. So I wound up with a new folder on the laptop "Documents and Settings", with all the stuff that was under it. So I was going to open it, move the files from (XP's) My Documents to (Win 7's) Documents. . . but there's just a weeeeeee problem: The Documents and Settings folder is LOCKED!!I have gone to the Security tab under properties and changed the permissions to allow EVERYONE full access, and it still denies me access. I downloaded Unlocker, but it doesn't show up in the menu when I right click the folder, so I have no idea what it's good for/how to use it. I can't delete it because that's not a choice on the menu when you right-click it.BTW, yesterday it had a padlock icon overlay on it. Today it has a shortcut arrow. I also have no idea why it's showing as a shortcut.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have problems deleting files and folders which were created for temporary purposes. Usually folders with a temporary picture collection, which I have created just to get it zipped and mailed. Since I use Picasa (which is usually open), there are systems files which are created automatically and stay locked for quite some time, even when all the pictures were erased. Is there any quick and simple way to delete locked files in Windows 7?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a folder that was set as private to prevent network sharing access. It's located on an internal hard drive other then my main C: partition. I re-formatted my C: and did a clean install of Windows 7 64bit. After words I tried access the same folder, and it said I didn't have permission but windows still gave me full access after it appeared to have indexed the folder. That was about a week ago. Now when I try to open a specific subfolder within, Windows explorer crashes. i really need the data out of it though. I dont see a way to alter the permissions now to revert them back.

My husband and I just got a new desktop, I originally planned on sharing a user account but since we're both in school I figured to have our own user accounts just to keep our files more separated and everything. So I created a second user account for me. I then realized that since he uses MY iTunes account, it makes sense that we use a shared music folder. Somehow I effed up my folders, the Public Music folder in particular. The only way I could see how to fix it was to restore it. Well that fixed the music folder problem, but it restored the computer back to before I had set up my own user login. No problem, I went back in and re-created it. Now my problem is that the user accounts are just fine, but the user folder from my first account is still in the the C drive under "users" but technically there is no user account that's attached to it. And of course, the folder is locked. I tried to delete it, but got a popup saying I was about to delete a system file so How to I remedy this situation???
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently picked up a new hard drive from a buddy of mine.I've managed to change my computer name and user account name. However, the user folder in "My Computer -> Local Disk C: -> Users" is locked, and I am unable to change the name.It doesn't cause any problems, I just want to find a way to change it if its possible. As well, I've also set permissions, but it only allows me to access the files, which is not the problem, since I only want to change the name of the User Account Folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed my laptop being slow and so I checked the active processes. Found an unknown process dllhost.exe using a massive portion of CPU. A friend of mine managed to locate file and alter it so that it was restricted to only the admin of the machine (me), along with another file below it (dllhst3g) was worried that this was some sort of infection that went unnoticed by my antivirus software which at the time was Stop Sign. Since locking files computer worked faster but have been unable to scan computer for infections as Stop Sign couldnt be update for unknown reason. Since then have been infected with virus which stopped me getting to cmd tool, task manager and changed desktop background. Started laptop in Safe Mode with networking, got a copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which managed to find the problem and delete it. Then was advised to use Avast anti-virus and had no problems since. My main problem is that the 2 files are still locked off and I am wondering how important those processes are? Also, my primary concern is the sudden inability to perform administrator tasks. I am the only user on my laptop and am an administrator according to profile on Control Panel, but when trying to perform Microsoft Windows Update receive pop-up message saying: You need to provide administrator permission To complete this task, you need to log in as an administrator or ask an administrator to complete the task for you. One of the updates to be downloaded is Windows 7 Service Pack. gain admin privileges again and let me know how important the dllhost and dllhst3g files are and/or how to unlock them?

i am selling a laptop to a co-worker but am having troubles changing the user name. This is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The folders under "users" are the "public" and then my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the folders icon and I cannot figure out how to do it.I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to make a reg file that I can tweak ALL the windows explorer views to show just the following: Name | Size | Date modifiedWindows drives me crazy with it's "defaults" for various views.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a program the other day that messed with my Windows Explorer. Now no folder will remember it's View options (Large Icons, List, Details), they all reset to their default.
As you can see it's nothing to do with Libraries. Neither the 'Shell Fix' nor editing the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBagsAllFoldersShell
has fixed it.
I recently installed an old game. I'm running Win 7 Pro x64 and the game was for XP. I messed with the compatibility settings and I think something went wrong. The folder icons have changed everywhere but on the desktop. The desktop shows the regular aero styled icons. Everywhere else the folder icons are some dumbed-down picture that looks low tech even for XP. Its bright yellow and has no 3D effects. To make it even more frustrating, it only does this when the view is set to details, list, or small icons, which are the only views I ever use. What button did I push and how can I fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedFor example I have a folder in my desktop with pictures, videos, documents, music, etc. I organized it by grouping by type, somewhere between large & extra large thumbnails, and a few other things. I want these settings applied to all other folders. I went to folder options and applied it to other folders. Nothing changed. My other folders, including my picture folder is still the same way it was. How do I apply to ALL folders? I know you can zoom in on thumbnails by hitting ctrl + mouse scroll wheel, but is there a way you can do it with a keyboard and not the mouse?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn windows XP, I could turn off the annoying "remember folder settings" that forced each folder to have it's own settings instead of always being in the same as the one I left it when I closed it. Windows 7 does not do that. I can tell it to "make all folders like current" which isn't what I want. Is there an option or was that removed to be made inferior to XP in another way?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set a default view for all folders, such that when I change the view in an explorer window, it will only take effect for the current explorer window, and will not be saved. Or even better, let me choose when I want to save a view setting as default for the current folder. I do not want to keep resetting my folder view. In Windows 98/XP it was possible.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using the build 7600.
It all started when i inserted a SD card. It didn't work so I inserted the SD card on my camera and plugged it in by usb. The second I inserted the usb to my laptop my usb mouse turned off and my wlan just literally vanished(it wasn't even in device manager.) Usb root hub with exclamation marks appeared in the device manager.
I tried uninstalling them and letting Windows 7 install them again and wlan wont come back and the mouse wont work.
I also tried uninstalling everything below usb conrtollers and generic volume and still no wifi.
I tried installing the drivers from the manufacturer of my laptop after uninstalling the old ones and still none
I was able to get the wlan running again after uninstalling everything below usb controllers in the device manager I restarted my comp in the middle of it cuz wlan reappeared and if i waited for it to finish wlan would disappear.
Now Every time I plug in a usb device wlan disappears and everything starts all over again..
I've been running various Windows 7 Betas and RCs on virtual machines and spare PCs for a while with no issues, so when I got access to the RTM I was quite confident (probably overly so) to upgrade my laptop from Vista.
Right after the install (ironically enough, from a USB), everything was working fine, until I plugged in my iPod, which installed the apple driver successfully, then informed me that the device was unplugged before the USB Mass Storage driver installed (it wasn't). I proceeded to try the other three USB ports on my computer (all four worked fine in Vista, and still work fine in XP and Ubuntu). None worked. I tried a thumb drive with an internal LED, and it appears that the device receives power for about half a second, before cutting off. Running a system restore back to whenever they were last working fixes the problem, I can plug in a USB stick, and it works fine for a couple of minutes, then its useless again.
The chipset is an Intel GMA965 express series, using the most recent driver (8.15.10.1825, for RC1). I've tried rolling back to the Vista driver, and the Vista driver in compatibility mode, to no avail.
Additionally, I've tried uninstalling all of the "USB Root Hub"s in the device manager, and scanning for new hardware, and uninstalling all of the USB controllers and then scanning for new hardware, still no luck. The issue that windows gives is
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
For which a fix for a similar problem (albeit with CD/DVD Drives) in XP was to delete the registry key, so I navigated my way to
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
And was first told access is denied. I took ownership, fixed permissions, and it still refused to delete (although, in trying to check what exactly the error message was, it just deleted now, although I'm not hopeful it will help)
I've disabled every reference to USB power saving mode in every power profile.
Most recently, I've tried the most recent Intel Device Chipset Installer, which installed successfully, but makes no difference. I also tried the built in troubleshooter, which recognises the issue, reinstalls all the drivers, and tells me it works/doesn't work, and then either way, it doesn't work. Although the troubleshooter does identify if there is a device plugged in for two of the four USB ports, it tries to install drivers, and fails.
In searching the internet for the last few days, I haven't been able to find a solution (although I have found several people with similar problems, one the same, all of which unsolved)
I would really prefer not to do a clean install - the reason I upgraded in the first place was because I had far too many programs installed to make it worth reinstalling all of them. I'm open to downgrading to vista, if its do-able with a clean.
If I browse my Windows 7 PC via UNC (\192.168.0.x) on an XP PC I am unable to get a list of shares. If I Directly open \192.168.0.xShareName that will work perfectly.
I have a vista PC on the same network and that can see the root fine. The only thing that I can think of is that SP1 has done something. but not sure why it would only effect showing the list of shares. As a side note in the event log i see the "Software Protection Service" keeps stopping and then starting, I tried googling it but no one seems to know if this is usual behavior to check the licence or if it shouldn't stop.
I'm looking to find where i can download something, somewhere, over the rainbow some newest bestestsss drivers for usb 2.0. I tried looking myself on the web but it seems a few things require you to pay money for an upgrade of all drivers on your system. I'd just like to upgrade my usb ports if possible I seem to have trouble with em.It says it has 6.1.7600.16385 (in 2006 so theres gotta be somethin better) installed I found a few downloads but they were actually older 5.x.xxx.
