Can't Access Directory On External USB
Oct 8, 2012
I moved a external USB drive formatted NTFS from an XP system to a Windows 7 system, and it will permanently stay on the Windows 7 system. I can't get any write or change access on the USB drive folders or files. I cannot change permissions in advanced mode, and it lists the file/directory owner as unknown in the group or user names box. It complains that I don't have administrator control, however I am logged in as administrator. How can I take ownership & change permissions on this drive?

I was emptying my external drive to start some new backups and I noticed that there was a msdia.dll in the directory of the external drive. How did it get there and should I delete it? Or is it OK there? I'ts a MS Debug Information Accessor. dll, whatever it does or is.

I have recently purchased a USB Harddrive.
I wish to share a directory on it, but when I tried through the share menu, or by clicking on 'share this' in Windows Explorer, Windows 7 told me that 'This folder can't be shared'. When I tried the advanced sharing settings, I get an error telling me that 'there are no more endpoints available from an endpoint mapper'.
Other directories, on my internal HDD, are already shared fine, and a quick test confirmed that further shares from the C drive also work. I am on Win 7 Home Premium and connect to a router via ethernet cable.

After HDD failure clean install of W7 Ultimate 64b on C drive(SSD)Trying to install programs to D drive(less frequntly used programs) I get error:"You don't have access to write to install directory" or "Installer has insufficient privileges to access the directory".My account is the administrator account and also at this point was the only account.I then tried creating a seperate administrator account (logged in with that and same errors )Also from elevated command prompt ran "net users administrator /active:yes".Still same errors.I know usual answer is right click and run as administrator when I 'right click' I don't get that option.

I know similar questions have been asked but I "might" have a unique one. What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:Users", "C:Program Files", & "C:Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:".I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Realupdate directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.
I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Realupdate directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. Again I am in elevated command prompt Administrator:X:windowssystem32cmd.exe How can I get to that directory. I just want to delete it now since I have all the files I need. I just want to create a junction point for Users directory linked to the D: drive. I used the following command: mklink "D:Users" C:Users" /JGrant it the D and C are turned around but in Windows Recovery Console it mixes up the drive letters but I know what is the source drive and destination drive. I verified this via the Volume Drive Titles.

I updated my windows last night. I get home today and try launching a program saved on my external HD. The program won't start because it says the program does not match my with my windows 7 64bit. I go into my external and notice that the program file (x64) now reads (x86). Strange, I think. So I then try to access the normal Program File, but it won't let me. Says it's corrupted and/or unreadable. Again, strange. I close the external and walk away. I come back to delete the program and reinstall, but when I go to open my external windows won't let me. It sees that it's there, but it lists it as having 0 used and 0 free space. Is there any way to gain access to the files inside? The movies, music, and programs on there I am not worried about losing. But I have a manuscript on there that I have yet to find saved somewhere else, along with some photos. I know, I know. I shouldn't have just saved the files there.

I have an Acer external HDD, 750Gb, and I use it plugged into my PS3 to store kids programmes when the Ps3 HD is full. I wanted to add a few other movies I have converted to mpg2, but I can no longer access this drive on either of my laptops (Windows 7) It still runs runs fine on the PS3. It is of course formatted to fat32 to allow the ps3 to access it. when plugged into the laptop, I get "Disk E" rather than "Acer". When I try and access it, I get "Drive E needs reformatting".I have tried to access it in smart mode, and from a DOS prompt.

Replaced HP laptop 250GB SATA HDD (Vista) yesterday with new 320GB SATA HDD Win7.Reason for replacing was having to run CHKDSK and Startup Repair a couple of times recently, thinking the old HDD could be wearing out.Win7 sees old HDD connected externally via USB but cannot access. It wants to format the external HDD, but the whole reason for accessing it is to recover data.USB ports are working.Status bar in Windows Explorer says Bitlocker status:off External HDD cable is Y configuration and have tried it with just one and both plugged in.(H > Properties > Tools > Check now > Tried to run CHKDSK on the external HDD but it says "Disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk." Under the Hardware tab it shows the two WD HDD and each says "Device is working properly."Under Change Settings, Quik removal policy (default) is enabled.Under Drivers > Update driver > it has the latest driver.Win7 AutorunKiller said external HDD is safe.Avast and Comodo are running but no security message has appeared. Might it need an exclusion anyway for Comodo? There is no security tab under (H > Properties so not sure if UAC or permissions is involved. BTW, the light on the external HDD blinks rapidly while opening Properties but it takes a long time to display. So, there is where I am at the moment and if you have time to consider a path of resolution for this anomaly.Additional info: I have just connected an old ATA HDD via USB and migrated some data with no problem. Also, I have just connected an older laptop HDD via USB and migrated some data. I swapped the cable from the older laptop to the new recently replaced Vista HDD and it gave the same message wanting to format the 250 GB Vista HDD.

I'm having a problem not being able to access 2 out of 3 partitions in an external HD.
Samsung HD753LJ (USB) 700GB
Partition 1: 200 GB / NTFS
Partition 2: 200 GB / NTFS
Partition 3: 300 GB / NTFS
I once had a dual-boot Windows XP Professional SP3 and Windows 7 Professional. Partition 1 could be accessed from both OS, but Windows 7 could not and still cannot 'see' Partitions 2 and 3. While it was still a dual-boot, switching back and forth between the systems was the only way I could access the data in Partitions 2&3 from Windows XP. Now that I have a clean install of Windows 7 only, (stupid me to have forgotten this problem) I cannot access the files at all. I have tried restarting the system, reinstalling the HD driver, replugging the HD, and the problem still persists. What I have managed so far:
> Under 'Device Manager'
>> No warning. All drivers are updated.
> Under 'My Computer'
>> Only Partition 1 is listed and accessible
> Under 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management'
>> All three partitions are in the disk's table. The 2nd and 3rd partitions are listed with blue bars, total space allocated and no other information. An attempt to get Properties or assign drive letters produces an error message "... Disk Managaement control view is not up-to-date ... ".
> Under 'partdisk'
>> 'list disk' shows correctly sized Disk at 700 GB
>> 'list volume' shows only up to Partition 1 of the external HD.
>> After selecting the external HD, 'list partition' shows all 3 partitions with correct sizes and offsets.
> With MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Disk 1_______
G: Partition 1
*: Partition 2
*: Partition 3
>> All 3 partitions can be explored (whew ...)
>> The two 'missing' partitions were not hidden.
>> However, when assigning the drive letters to the partitions, the drive letters only stay in front of the partitions' names until I clicked Apply. After which, the asterisks came back again. (I haven't found any way to assign the drive letter in Partition Wizard Bootable CD

My external dvd/cd drive (Sony DRX S7OU W) previously worked from this computer running on Windows 7 but I now receive the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access them." The same dvd/cd drive continues to work on other computers. All other devices that I link to this port (camera, ipod) continue to function. I currently have Windows Home Premium 64-bit and seems to be working quite well. However, when I tried to connect my Iomega eGo external HDD to *every single USB port I have on the computer* the computer would "see" the HDD but not register as a HDD that I can access. It will not show up in My Computer at all. The HDD has music files on it from a different computer, so it's not empty. When I go to look at the USB connections, it shows up as a USB Mass Storage device, but again, I cannot actually get INTO my HDD.As a side note, when I look at computer management, my external HDD shows up as Disk1. Perhaps I need to allocate a letter to it? How can I do that without erasing the data stored on it already?

my SSD drive was suddenly inaccessible after a reboot, so I put my backup spindle drive into my laptop to get it started. Because I have important files I need to access from my ssd I put that into a case and plugged it into the USB port. Now windows explorer just hangs forever trying to detect/access it! in Computer management I cannot see the disk partition but I can see the harddisk device in device manager.
In windows explorer I can see one drive letter assigned (there should be two drives on the ssd) but when I tried to access the drive it just hangs forever. It also hangs with any other methods I try to access it (chkdsk, data recovery programs, Testdisk by CGSecurity)!!I think the main issue is that the external ssd is locking up everytime some program tries to access it... perhaps if I can somehow remove this lock I might be able to attempt a data recovery.

I've taken the HDD out of an old iMac and put it in a USB caddy. I use HFS Explorer to access it from my work XP laptop and can retrieve files off it easily.I've bought a new Windows 7 desktop and want to do the same thing, however when I plug it in it's not recognised in Explorer. I go to Disk Management and it suggests I have to initialize it before it can be accessed, but I don't want to format it, just use HFS explorer to get some files off it. I didn't have to do any of this on my XP laptop - it worked first time as soon as I plugged the external drive in?

Given every permission and ownership to new computer to have its way with docs on external drive. Can't copy docs from external drive to new computer even in (basicithout networking) safe mode. (And haven't tried a mac.)Can I somehow change permissions or ownership on the EXTERNAL drive to access my own documents? Anything else?If I throw it against the wall, will that work? Who is this other administrator to give access, when I'm the only administrator?

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive and Windows 7 Premium 64 bit. I have a user setup for each member of my family on the computer. The maxtor drive was working fine uptil I decided that I wanted only myself to be able to access it only. The drive appeared as my K drive. I went to sharing and added myself as read/write access and removed the everyone share thinking that only I would be able to use the drive. I restarted my PC and now nobody can access it. When I plug the drive into the usb slot the drive whirs up as normal but there is no drive letter for it and it does not appear in device manager etc. I plugged it into my old XP machine and that cannot read it either..

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Dell Inspiron 560. I am using a DI-524 D-Link wireless router. I have an Acer Aspire One Net Book running Windows XP Home it is equipped with an internal wireless network adapter. I can connect/communicate with router and access the internet with no problems whatever. However, when I connect an external wireless network adapter e.g. Alpha AWUS036H I cannot get a connection when I disable my internal network adapter. I have also tried the Trendnet TEW-424UB USB external wireless network adapter and the symptoms are exactly the same. If I leave home and use another Wireless point of access I have no trouble connecting using the external adapters which means the problem is confined to my personal home network. I have removed and reinstalled my router, and the network adapters drivers etc. I have uninstalled my Norton Firewall and and disabled my Windows firewall to no avail. I have removed my WEP security features and tried to run it open with no improvement. I have connected the external network adapters on a neighbours computer running XP to see if I could connect to my home network. That didn't work as well. Bottom line is I simply cannot get an external wireless network adapter to work with my router. Yet my internal netbook adapter connects with no problems at all.
