Cannot Access Some Partitions In External HD From Windows 7

Sep 24, 2010

I'm having a problem not being able to access 2 out of 3 partitions in an external HD.

Samsung HD753LJ (USB) 700GB
Partition 1: 200 GB / NTFS
Partition 2: 200 GB / NTFS
Partition 3: 300 GB / NTFS

I once had a dual-boot Windows XP Professional SP3 and Windows 7 Professional. Partition 1 could be accessed from both OS, but Windows 7 could not and still cannot 'see' Partitions 2 and 3. While it was still a dual-boot, switching back and forth between the systems was the only way I could access the data in Partitions 2&3 from Windows XP. Now that I have a clean install of Windows 7 only, (stupid me to have forgotten this problem) I cannot access the files at all. I have tried restarting the system, reinstalling the HD driver, replugging the HD, and the problem still persists. What I have managed so far:

> Under 'Device Manager'
>> No warning. All drivers are updated.

> Under 'My Computer'
>> Only Partition 1 is listed and accessible

> Under 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management'
>> All three partitions are in the disk's table. The 2nd and 3rd partitions are listed with blue bars, total space allocated and no other information. An attempt to get Properties or assign drive letters produces an error message "... Disk Managaement control view is not up-to-date ... ".

> Under 'partdisk'
>> 'list disk' shows correctly sized Disk at 700 GB
>> 'list volume' shows only up to Partition 1 of the external HD.
>> After selecting the external HD, 'list partition' shows all 3 partitions with correct sizes and offsets.

> With MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Disk 1_______
G: Partition 1
*: Partition 2
*: Partition 3
>> All 3 partitions can be explored (whew ...)
>> The two 'missing' partitions were not hidden.
>> However, when assigning the drive letters to the partitions, the drive letters only stay in front of the partitions' names until I clicked Apply. After which, the asterisks came back again. (I haven't found any way to assign the drive letter in Partition Wizard Bootable CD

After Installing Windows Couldn't Access Partitions

Dec 24, 2012

my niece was telling me her dell was not working right so I decided to just do a clean factory restore as a scan with malware bytes revealed over 30 viruses/trojans! Someones gonna get a sit down to talk about her surfing habits but I digress. I figure at this point a clean restore is easier than trying to remove these viruses.

So I go to do the normal F8, repair my computer step and see that the repair my computer function doesn't work. Ok let me boot to windows 7 disk and select the repair option and use that for factory restore. Again nothing, usually Dell datasafe options will allow me to do this. I then notice that the recovery partition was not showing up.

I called her and asked and it seems my sisters so called boyfriends fancies himself a "computer expert" and last time they were having problems decided to just reinstall windows which I assume some how lost the connection to the recovery partition.

I installed EaseUS free partition manager and see that the Recovery partition is still there just not accessible. Is there a way I can make this partition bootable again so that i can assess it from the repair menu and possible repair this back to factory?

also if I go like im going to reinstall windows when it says in what partition you want to install windows I can also see the recovery partition.

'External' HD - All Data Gone, Partitions Still There

Nov 14, 2012

I've just experienced my 'external hard drive' not letting me access any data. I put 'external hard drive' in apostrophes, as it's actually an old SATA Internal Hard drive, in an external case. The hard drive was partitioned into two partitions. One about 100GB large which had Windows 7 installed on it, from when I used it inside my desktop. Another which was encrypted with TrueCrypt and was about 800GB large. I tried loading the second partition with Truecrypt, but the computer locked up. In the end I had to turn off the computer manually by the power.I booted up and I couldn't see the hard drives at all - not even in Computer Management. I turned the HD power on and off a couple times and eventually they were viewable - only they'd turned into three partitions, with an extra 24GB partition as the active, primary partition. It might've been that way before but not viewable in My Computer. Now I can see the sizes of the partition in Computer Management, but they show as 0MB in My Computer, as if I'd not formatted them. When I try open them in My Computer though, it lets me open them - it doesn't tell me they need formatting.I'm currently running TestDisk, but it can only see the 24GB partition. how I can recover my data?

Edit: TestDisk Results: No Recoverable Partition Found. Also noticed file system now says RAW.

External HD Can't Detecting All Partitions?

Aug 15, 2012

I don't know what happen, but im having problems with my external hard drive. I have 3 partition in it, but only the first one is detecting, the other two doesn't appear at all then a sign pops up saying i have to format it, i hit cancel and all 3 drives disappear. seems like hard drive failure. I have a lot of important data on the other drives, is there any way to recover it myself? I really don't want to pay 500+ dollars to recover the data off the drive.

Booting From An External HDD, 3 Partitions And 3 OS's?

Feb 16, 2013

I work with three kinds of computers. One is on my desktop, new windows 7, dual core, that I use for lesson planning. The second are the computers in the classrooms. I am guessing that they are all almost identical, xp purchased 4 years ago. The third is a server used in the computer lab. I would like to buy an external hd and partition it 3 ways - and install win 7 (english) while it is hooked up to my desktop, install xp (english) while it is hooked up to one of the classroom computers and then install another OS while it is hooked up to the server. I want to be able to connect the hd to the computer, power it on and choose either either partition d:, e: or f: depending on the computer it is hooked up to. I know that I can boot from an external hd but I have never tried putting 3 OS, one to each partition, on an external HD.

Cannot Copy / Backup To Or Encrypt Partitions On External Hard Drives

Dec 9, 2011

I have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.

Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.

There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
- When one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
- When one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.

Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.

Windows 7 Sees External HDD But Cannot Access?

Mar 28, 2011

Replaced HP laptop 250GB SATA HDD (Vista) yesterday with new 320GB SATA HDD Win7.Reason for replacing was having to run CHKDSK and Startup Repair a couple of times recently, thinking the old HDD could be wearing out.Win7 sees old HDD connected externally via USB but cannot access. It wants to format the external HDD, but the whole reason for accessing it is to recover data.USB ports are working.Status bar in Windows Explorer says Bitlocker status:off External HDD cable is Y configuration and have tried it with just one and both plugged in.(H > Properties > Tools > Check now > Tried to run CHKDSK on the external HDD but it says "Disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk." Under the Hardware tab it shows the two WD HDD and each says "Device is working properly."Under Change Settings, Quik removal policy (default) is enabled.Under Drivers > Update driver > it has the latest driver.Win7 AutorunKiller said external HDD is safe.Avast and Comodo are running but no security message has appeared. Might it need an exclusion anyway for Comodo? There is no security tab under (H > Properties so not sure if UAC or permissions is involved. BTW, the light on the external HDD blinks rapidly while opening Properties but it takes a long time to display. So, there is where I am at the moment and if you have time to consider a path of resolution for this anomaly.Additional info: I have just connected an old ATA HDD via USB and migrated some data with no problem. Also, I have just connected an older laptop HDD via USB and migrated some data. I swapped the cable from the older laptop to the new recently replaced Vista HDD and it gave the same message wanting to format the 250 GB Vista HDD.

Windows 7 Will Not Let Access Iomega External HDD?

Jul 13, 2011

I currently have Windows Home Premium 64-bit and seems to be working quite well. However, when I tried to connect my Iomega eGo external HDD to *every single USB port I have on the computer* the computer would "see" the HDD but not register as a HDD that I can access. It will not show up in My Computer at all. The HDD has music files on it from a different computer, so it's not empty. When I go to look at the USB connections, it shows up as a USB Mass Storage device, but again, I cannot actually get INTO my HDD.As a side note, when I look at computer management, my external HDD shows up as Disk1. Perhaps I need to allocate a letter to it? How can I do that without erasing the data stored on it already?

How To Allow Windows 7 To Access A HFS External Disc For The First Time

Jun 25, 2011

I've taken the HDD out of an old iMac and put it in a USB caddy. I use HFS Explorer to access it from my work XP laptop and can retrieve files off it easily.I've bought a new Windows 7 desktop and want to do the same thing, however when I plug it in it's not recognised in Explorer. I go to Disk Management and it suggests I have to initialize it before it can be accessed, but I don't want to format it, just use HFS explorer to get some files off it. I didn't have to do any of this on my XP laptop - it worked first time as soon as I plugged the external drive in?

Cannot Access External HD

Sep 7, 2012

I updated my windows last night. I get home today and try launching a program saved on my external HD. The program won't start because it says the program does not match my with my windows 7 64bit. I go into my external and notice that the program file (x64) now reads (x86). Strange, I think. So I then try to access the normal Program File, but it won't let me. Says it's corrupted and/or unreadable. Again, strange. I close the external and walk away. I come back to delete the program and reinstall, but when I go to open my external windows won't let me. It sees that it's there, but it lists it as having 0 used and 0 free space. Is there any way to gain access to the files inside? The movies, music, and programs on there I am not worried about losing. But I have a manuscript on there that I have yet to find saved somewhere else, along with some photos. I know, I know. I shouldn't have just saved the files there.

Unable To Access External Ssd Drive?

Jan 17, 2013

my SSD drive was suddenly inaccessible after a reboot, so I put my backup spindle drive into my laptop to get it started. Because I have important files I need to access from my ssd I put that into a case and plugged it into the USB port. Now windows explorer just hangs forever trying to detect/access it! in Computer management I cannot see the disk partition but I can see the harddisk device in device manager.

In windows explorer I can see one drive letter assigned (there should be two drives on the ssd) but when I tried to access the drive it just hangs forever. It also hangs with any other methods I try to access it (chkdsk, data recovery programs, Testdisk by CGSecurity)!!I think the main issue is that the external ssd is locking up everytime some program tries to access it... perhaps if I can somehow remove this lock I might be able to attempt a data recovery.

Cannot Access Router With External Network Adapters

I have an Acer Aspire One Net Book running Windows XP Home it is equipped with an internal wireless network adapter. I can connect/communicate with router and access the internet with no problems whatever. However, when I connect an external wireless network adapter e.g. Alpha AWUS036H I cannot get a connection when I disable my internal network adapter. I have also tried the Trendnet TEW-424UB USB external wireless network adapter and the symptoms are exactly the same. If I leave home and use another Wireless point of access I have no trouble connecting using the external adapters which means the problem is confined to my personal home network. I have removed and reinstalled my router, and the network adapters drivers etc. I have uninstalled my Norton Firewall and and disabled my Windows firewall to no avail. I have removed my WEP security features and tried to run it open with no improvement. I have connected the external network adapters on a neighbours computer running XP to see if I could connect to my home network. That didn't work as well. Bottom line is I simply cannot get an external wireless network adapter to work with my router. Yet my internal netbook adapter connects with no problems at all.

Can't Access External Hard Drive And Error On CHKDSK

Nov 17, 2012

This morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.

After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".

I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.

I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?
