How To Stop Computers From Sleeping/hibernation/etc For Remote Support

Dec 5, 2012

New to Windows 7 and have a question. It seems my test machines keep going into some kind of sleep/hibernate state that prevents me from VNC'ing to them. All I want is for the monitors to go to sleep after 15 minutes, but the machines to stay on. We do a lot of work during off hours, but the few test machines all seem to go night-night on me when I try to access them during those times.

Does anyone know which group policy settings I should use in order to help with my late night VNC'ing?

Computer Becomes Slow And Cranky And Even Crashes After Resuming From The Hibernation Or Sleeping?

Dec 30, 2011

First and foremost, details of my lappy:Asus A43SWIndows 7 64 bitAMD Radeon HD 673Intel core i7 8gb RAMIt is a new lap, just bought 2 mths ago.Noticed the first problem with it is 1) THe computer becomes slow and cranky and even crashes after resuming from the hibernation or sleeping (fall short of a BSOD, eg can't move mouse, etc...and have to hard restart the laptop). Managed to reduce the frequency of i from always to infrequent by setting the hard disk turn off, sleep and hibernate option in the power option to never. Lots of forum explained such similar problem, but despite updating BIOS, display driver, asus ATK utility driver, etc...still persists2) Now coming to the 2nd question which I am wondering is it related to the problems after resuming from sleep/hibernate.

Got repeated BSOD today.....after I update the power4gear hybrid utility (by asus to a newer version) version 1143 to 1150. Managed to generate and use debuggin tool to see the dump file...which shows ntoskrnl.exe as possible cause. MInd you that this also the same culprit that appears in the dump file in my problem number 1(which has once BSOD during resuming from hibernate/sleep)So is number 1 and number 2 related? What is wrong actually with number 1 problem? What is ntoskrnl.exe, and how to fix it?

View Memory On Remote Computers?

Jun 9, 2010

In XP, I was able to get memory information from remote computers by right-clicking Computer, Manage Computer, Action, Connect to Another Computer, type in the computer name, then right click on the computer and and click on properties to get the memory information. Can you get information on memory from remote systems in Windows 7? I sometimes need to do this to determine if I need to order more RAM for systems that are being upgraded in an enterprise environment.

Which Remote Support Software To Purchase For A 50+ User-base

Jan 15, 2013

I am currently trying to decide on the best remote support software to purchase for a 50+ workstation business. I have experimented with Real VNC and TeamViewer, and whilst they are quite comparable I noticed that TeamViewer has a feature called "Seamless Windows". I will be providing remote support to local users, and several interstate branches - therefore the software that I decide on must accommodate a wide diversity of geographical locations.I was also looking at a product called GoverLAN, but it seems to me that GoverLAN only works on a single LAN and can't be used over a WAN in a similar way to both RealVNC & TeamViewer?

How To Share Local Printer To Other Remote Computers

Apr 13, 2011

I have a working local Laserprinter under 64bit Win7. Through LAN another Win7 computer is connected. The remote computer can access local shared folders successfully. But it cannot access the local laser printer (connected through USB). How can I share the local printer to other computers in LAN? Do I have to define local printers explicitely as shared/accessible? Or are they automatically accessible (provided that the local user account and passwort is known at the remote computer? Do I have to install the printer driver in general at the remote computer as well or is the printer driver on the local computer enough?

Remote Control With Multiple Computers In One Room

Sep 11, 2009

I've seen this somewhere, but I can't for the life of me find it again. There is a way of setting only certain remotes to work with certain PCs so they don't interfere with others. I have my HTPC and laptop in the same room, both with IR receivers - whenever I use the remote for my PC, the laptop ends up with all the signals too, and I come back to find it's playing a video or something.

Does anyone here know where that tutorial/registry setting is to change remote control channels?

Remote Desktop Multiple Computers Behind Router

Nov 30, 2011

I have two computers running W7p that I want to access when I'm away from my office. I am able to use remote desktop from inside my home network on either computer. I am able to access one of the computers from outside with my router set to forward global port 3389 to host port 3389. I am guessing that what I need to do is set up two port forwards in my router; the global port will be different but the host port will still be 3389 in each case. Does that sound right? One thing I know is that going into the registry and changing the host port to something other than 3389 does nothing. In fact, if I do that I can no longer use remote desktop inside my home network. I've looked all over the web today and there are not any clear instructions on how to do this (that I could find). I read the Windows 7 forum tutorial.

Restore Hidden Updates On Remote Computers?

Sep 15, 2011

In my environment we have about 100 computers that have the IE 9 windows update hidden (along with a few other updates). We do not have a SUS server to manage the updates on all of our remote computers. What would be the easiest way to restore these hidden updates on our employees' computers? Is there a registry entry for all the updates? Could I just create a reg file that delete's or modifies the 'hidden' attribute and have users apply the reg file to their computer?

Printers Causing Remote Desktop Session To Stop Working?

Nov 7, 2011

I trouble shot an issue with RDP that has me to believe the sollution lies in somthing to do with printer settings in Windows 7.Affected computer RDP's sucessfully logs into a load ballanced terminal server farm, several moments into the session being established I am getting the "Remote Desktop stopped working" dialog box. This issue is localized to this single computer and is fixed by unchecking the "pinters" option in the remote desktop settings. this computer acts as a print server to a small laserjet printer, all other computer on this small LAN can successfully print to this printer from their local desktop or while connected to RDP sessions. I have tried : Rebuilding RDP desktop icon for user. New Local machine user accounts. starting/stopping Print spool services. USB and LPT1 cables (currently on LPT1). I'm 2 inches away from backing up this users data and giving them a new computer. It doesn't make any sense

Hibernation Works Randomly / WHEA Logger Event 18 When Hibernation Fails

Dec 8, 2012

When I put my computer in hibernation, sometimes when I wake it, it hangs at the user select screen, or it just shows a black screen. Sometimes I can reset the computer after it has hanged, and try again resuming from hibernation, and many times it will work after a couple of tries. Other times after resetting I won't get the prompt to try again with resuming (the other option is to delete hibernation data and reboot the system) but I will get the usual screen that says that Windows was not shut down correctly (with all the options for safe mode, etc). If I cannot resume and I get the screen with safe mode and all the other crap, I finally log in I get a notice that there was a critical error, in the details I see BlueScreen and other data, but I actually never get a blue screen. In the dump folder, there are no dmp files related to the hibernation hanging.

Anyway, when it happens, I see several Event 18 WHEA-Logger in the event viewer, about 6 of them every time. What's weird though, is that I literally have NO problems with this computer other than this. The only times it hangs is when I resume it from hibernation. I can play games or run stress tests with or without overclock and the system is 100% stable. But there is some problem that prevents it from resuming from hibernation correctly, so every time I use it is basically a gamble because it has like 50% chance of working.I tried EVERY SINGLE solution I found with google related to hibernation problems, and it's still there. I even formatted and reinstalled Windows from scratch, and it's still there. I'm positive I updated every single driver for every hardware I have and nope, no solution.I know the WHEA error is related to the hardware but like I said, everything works PERFECTLY once the system starts up properly, or when it resumes from hibernation properly. Remote Desktop Connects But Remote Host Screen Stays Black?

Nov 8, 2011

I know there have been a number of posts on this subject but I have been unable to find a solution. I have 2 Windows 7 machines, both running SP1.

My HP Pavilion is running 64-bit and my Dell Latiude E6400 is running 32-bit. I can successfully RDP from my Dell and even my Apple iPad (via an RDP client) into my HP Pavilion. However, the problem is that when I try to RDP from my Pavilion into my Dell I get connected but all I see is a BLACK from the Dell machine. The only thing i can see is the Status bar at teh top telling me that i am connected. A few moments later I get a popup message telling me that the machines have failed to communicate.

I have confirmed that RDP settings are identical on the Pavilion and Dell. I have even downgraded the Dell NVIDIA graphics driver to an older version based on the recommended version on the Dell support web site.

Remote Desktop Client 6.1 Cannot Connect To Remote Computer

Aug 30, 2011

We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect.I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine. I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only. On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection.

Sleeping System Wakes Up Unnecessarily?

Nov 11, 2011

I have a small network consisting my work system and a HTPC. The HTPC spends all day sleeping, or at least that's the plan. It has a couple of maps to shares on my work machine, but not vice versa. Whenever I open an Explorer window on my main system it wakes up the HTPC, annoyingly. There doesn't appear to be a don't wake on LAN option (it's an Intel DH67GD motherboard). I could understand it if I had mapped some drive letters on my main system to shares on the HTPC, but that's not the case.

Freeze After Idle, Not A Sleeping Issue?

Mar 4, 2012

I had WHS2011 installed on a rig and everything was fine. I decided to turn it into a HTPC and installed Windows 7. It then started freezing on idle. As long as I used it it was fine but when I left it alone it froze up. I tried a few things but finally just wiped the HD and started anew. Immediately the same problem.I turned off every sleep/hibernation setting to no avail. There are no warning flags in Device Manager. My video card has the latest drivers. The strange thing is it runs fine in Safe Mode and for about six hours or so under Diagnostic Boot but then freezes.I am at a loss The system is a i3 CPU with 8 gigs of RAM, GeForce 460GT GPU and a couple of SATA hard drives (350gig and 1.5tb)

Computer Not Hibernating Or Sleeping Correctly?

Jun 6, 2011

Recently i have been having trouble getting my Dell Studio 1747 laptop to hibernate or sleep. When i go to start and hit either sleep or hibernate, the screen shuts off but the computer never fully goes off. The fans continue to run and the usb power lights are still on. It will stay like this for hours. I have let it go all night before and the only way to shut it off is to hold the power button and do a force restart. I have had this problem before. After a different discussion post we determined it was a power settings problem and after I set hard disks no not shut off the problem was solved. I had to reinstall my OS and when i put the same power settings back, the problem continued to happen. But i still think it may be a power setting. I have all of the current drivers installed and my computer is free of any viruses. Im running Windows 7 Pro x64 but it was also a problem with home edition.

Computer Alarm Went Off While Sleeping Then Shuts Down Intermittently

Mar 11, 2012

I have a HP XW8400, Win 7 x64 Ultimate, 8G Fully Buffered memory.Per instructions of my "computer guy", I leave the computer on almost always. I was awaken at 4AM by the "alarm" on the computer, and a black screen with error codes 922, 923 and 927. See attached picture. Having experienced this error before (maybe a year ago) I shut the computer down, carefully cleaned the contacts on the video card, card reader and memory. I also removed the Hauppauge WinTV 1600 card, as I hadn't used that accessory in years.Since reboot, the computer would run fine for about an hour or so, then it would freeze up, accepting no input from keyboard. A few seconds later mouse input would not be accepted, and then the BSOD with error code 0x000000F4. This procedure went on three or four times, but I was able to do some work in the meantime. My computer tech called back and said I should try a system restore. I did that, but now I am unable to boot at all. I tried several times, one time getting a BSOD - type screen, but the characters were unintelligible. It was acting as if someone had shrunk a screen full of type horizontally, "squishing" the letters. As my computer tech is unavailable, I need to attempt to fix the problem myself, as I use this computer about 12 hours or more daily.
