Dec 11, 2011
My hp laptop froze while i was performing system recovery. I got as far as backing up my existing files...8 dvd's worth. I restarted a few times and then froze on a grey screen with my cursor flashing in the upper left hand corner...I tried using my system recovery dvd that I made but still nothing.

I made it through the "copy file"s part, then in "verify files" it froze at 89% for about the last half hour.
It says I can only make these files once. If this doesn't finish, will it let me retry?

The problem started when I pressed alt-tab while I was playing a game. After alt-tab, the system froze and so I tried Task Manager with no result. I pressed reset button and then I realized that the computer cannot boot Windows (I only have installed windows 7). I tried system restore, fixing boot problems using Windows 7 installation DVD but it didn't help. I don't wont to format the Computer because I have important files that I haven't backed up. Can I do anything to save the files?

On this recent windows update, 2/14/13, my computer froze on the "Preparing to configure windows" screen for several hours. I rebooted normally and the screen went to "configuring updates" and stuck at 67% for about an hour. I got frustrated with it and rebooted to safe mode to see if I could do a system restore and when I did it said there was no restore point back up! So I rebooted normally and now it is still just sitting on the "Preparing to Configure Windows" screen with the circle spinning. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Dimension 2400.

Today, I was browsing the internet, while watching a stream of MLG. While suddenly my comp screen shows weird glitchy lines and the sound freezes, i end up turning off my computer and restarting it, but the glitchy screen still shows and wont startup to login screen. I was able to startup into safe mode (still with the weird glitch on screen) but the restoring and doing startup repair seems to not have fixed the problem.

I woke up this morning to find my computer was frozen. So I forced it to restart by holding down the power button. Once it was booting back up I walked away from my pc for an hour and when I came back it just has a message saying "Cleaning up... Do not turn off your computer." It has been like this for over 4 hours. What causes my pc to go through this cleaning up phase and how long does it take? Also is it safe to restart my pc at any point if this takes way to long?

I want to have a Factory Reset of my computer. In order to launch a System Recovery, I need to create Restore Discs. When I launch the Recovery Disc Creation, it says:"This computer does not have a burning drive, which is required to make DVDs. Please contact HP Support for asistance."My computer did not come with a build in CD Drive. Even plugging in a USB CD Drive will not make creating the discs possible. So. I ask you. How can I reset my computer to Factory Condition?
Computer Specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit)
Model: HP Pavillion dm3 Notebook PC
edit: This notebook came with a Recovery Partition built in.

I decided to do a system recovery for my laptop. I've already done a couple of experiments before and from what I remember the first time I done a system recovery, the partition where my personal files where saved did not get deleted. The only thing that was "system recovered" was the partition where the OS was located. Yesterday, I again decided to do a recovery but this time, the partition where I have my files got deleted and the space it had "returned" to the OS partition. Orignally, I shrunk the OS partition so that I can have space for my partition for my personal files. If it helps, I've done a "system recovery" but saw one of it has a "mini system recovery" option. What is the difference?

I just installed my first pc game. It is Call of Duty Black Ops (no, I'm not 12, my nephew is )I changed install path to D:Games (have user folders relocated there, thats about it, no programs ever installed on d data partition.Installation froze and locked up first time. Had to power off to get out.Second time was logged off my admin account by nephew while installing, though the install ran for a long time - should have completed anyways, after installing, it's not showing anywhere: checked box for install desktop shortcut - not there, not showing up under win start> all programs or games.Tried to launch directly from install path folder... blackops.exe ERROR says: "Blinkw32.dll missing...
1) I never installed steam or anything, could that be the problem?(I'm on different pc now, game pc doesn't have internet right now
2) Can't uninstall! Not showing up as installed program. Uninstaller in game directory won't work. There are 2 uninstall.dll ( 1 for each failed install I guess)
2a) Windows didn't recognize as a program install cause no restore point created before (IS This because I changed install path away from C:programs???)In future how do I deal with installing games to d data partition and have system trat as program install? not listed as program, can't uninstall from control panel
2b) HOW DO I REMOVE FAILED INSTALLS (BOTH).Do I just delete or did the installer likely create all kinds of entries in various other locations that would possibly leave HUGE files elsewhere???

My Windows 7 x64 desktop box developed a problem this morning with the ACLS file that Windows diagnostics could not fix. After several attempts, I decided to do a non-destructive re-set via the recovery management software included with the box (eMachines 1331, which came with no disks, only recovery partition).
The process seemed to go smoothly, but the Restore Progress screen has been sitting at 'Please wait a moment...' for well over an hour now and I'm puzzled. Shouldn't there be some sort of progress bar indicating how long remaining in the process, or is it meant to just sit on the 'Please wait a moment...' with the trailing dots cycling from 1 to 5 dots as it is doing?
The drive is 683 gigs usable, with about 50% in use for files and programs.

I am attempting to transfer my system from my 250gb hdd to a new 3tb hddand am having trouble. I have created a system image on my usb external drive.I then created a system repair disc (cd-rom). I rebooted my system, went intothe BIOS and put the cd-rom drive as the primary boot device and put the new 3tb drive as the primary drive. I have even deleted the 250gb drive in thelist of drives because of some info I read trying to solve my problem. When theboot completes I get a System recovery options windows requesting keyboardcountry - US and click next. Then get a System Recovery Options window witha message "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with theversion of windows you are trying to repair. First off, I'd like to point out that I'm kind computer literate and some technical things you guys may say may be over my head. That being said, here's what happened.I booted up our Sony Viao running Windows 7 and a window popped up talking about system recovery. At the time I didn't even know what that meant, so I was like "what's this BS" and exited out of the window. Then the computer went into system recovery mode. I just thought it was doing an update of some sort, so I walked away and let it do it's thing. I at the time didn't know that while I was watching tv, our computer was erasing all of our data. When I came back, it was finished and said "restoring to factory settings". Then it set-up for first time use, pick a password, ect. Loosing our important documents is one thing, but we're super bummed we lost all of pictures of our daughters first year and a half of life. I know it's our fault for not backing up our files and we will from now on.So my question is, is there a possibility that the data wasn't wiped completely off the hard drive? Could the data just have been moved to another part of the hard drive and not be erased until that space is needed? I've tried booting up in "safe mode", but that didn

Ran Windows Update on wife's computer today (Biostar A75-MH mobo, AMD A8-3850, 8Gb DDR3-1600, 64Gb Samsung 830 SSD boot drive, Win7 x64) and upon restart it froze at 35% installing the updates. After it did nothing for 30 min I rebooted. It boots to the desktop but with an error box saying failed to load sortbls.nlp. Explorer isn't working, can run any programs, Start menu won't come up, just sits with the blue circle spinning. Tried to run system restore but the 11-15 one disappeared from the list when I tried to run it and now just shows the only restore point as Windows Update Critical Update from today which fails. Startup Repair says no problems.

Just picked up my first Win7 computer, and it came with no discs. No surprise there, but I'd like to make some recovery discs, but not the kind that Windows says you can make. I don't want access to tools for recovery, I want access to a physical install of the OS and the drivers.
Like the discs enterprise people get when they buy their machines. I must be googling wrong, because all I'm finding are results that teach me how to create a recovery tools disc, which isn't quite what I'm looking for.

I have a Dell XPS 17 laptop that has dual drives - c & d.The c drive crashed and was replaced by dell.We are now trying to do a system image recovery from the d drive. We are following How to do a System Image Recovery in Window7 from seven forums.com.url...After Selecting the System Image from the D Drive (STEP TWO, # 5 and 6), the computer prompts to create a repair disk. The only way to move forward is to create or not create the disk.In either case, it then has you restart the machine, takes you through the process again.. Step 5/6.Never gets to Step 7 to actually DO the System Recover.
