System Restore After Doing Recovery
May 16, 2012
I am in the process of restoring everything to our laptop after doing a Recovery. How to make this process simpler? Right now Windows Update is installing 103 updates. I have downloaded virus protection. Any other "must have" or "must do" things I should be aware of?

I want to have a Factory Reset of my computer. In order to launch a System Recovery, I need to create Restore Discs. When I launch the Recovery Disc Creation, it says:"This computer does not have a burning drive, which is required to make DVDs. Please contact HP Support for asistance."My computer did not come with a build in CD Drive. Even plugging in a USB CD Drive will not make creating the discs possible. So. I ask you. How can I reset my computer to Factory Condition?
Computer Specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit)
Model: HP Pavillion dm3 Notebook PC
edit: This notebook came with a Recovery Partition built in.

I started to do a full system recovery on my son's Acer Aspire 5750z, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using the (4) Recovery DVD's we made when we bought it. Everything was working fine through the first three discs. I was called away while the third disc was in use (maybe 10 minutes) and when I got back to the machine, the window was up asking me to remove disc 3 and insert disc 4. I did, and in the 4 hours and 15 minutes since then, nothing has happened. The Acer eRecovery Management (v8.3.2) Window is up. Step 5 "Restore Progres" is highlighted. The elapsed time counter is continuing to run (currently at 5 hours 8 minutes and counting), the "Restoring System" bar is full and shows 100%, and the "Updating System" bar is stuck at 2%, which is where it was when I put in the 4th disc. I am tempted to shut down the laptop and start all over again, but I am afraid that it will mess something up if I do..

System Restore will not create a restore point or restore to a previous date & time. The error message was: A restore point could not be created: An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Server (VSS).The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the Event System Sevice and the VSS service are running & check for associated errors in the event logs (0x80042318).Volume Shadow Copy is started & running (done in system events).Event System Sevice and the VSS service are started and running. But no cigar, SR still broken.

Does anyone know how to schedule/automate a rollback to a system restore point at a set time each day? What i'm trying to do is:1. Disable the standard system restore behavior for creating restore points when installing apps and drivers.2. Automatically/schedule a restore point to be created every morning. (probably using Task Scheduler)3. Automatically/schedule a rollback to that morning restore point every night. This should allow users to mess up the workstation during the day, and restore a working rollback point at night when users are not using a workstation.Updates are scheduled at nighttime, so before that happens, it should rollback to a good restore point, apply updates, then create a working "new" restore point with the updates in the morning....etc.

So I cleaned my registry using RegSeaker and now my computer BSODs at the 'starting windows' screen, even if I try to start in safe mode. I created a backup of my old registry before cleaning and I can access it using the command prompt that you can access in the system restore options. However, when I try to update the registry with it I get an error message saying 'cannot import.

OK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords.

I have tried a lot of things and I can't get system restore to work. I don't need to use it but I would like my computer to be working since there is no reason for this not to work. I just keep getting ComPlusStaging failed to obtain original copy from %systemroot%/registration all the time.

My Windows 7 System Restore doesn't restore. It allows me to set them and tells me they've been done. But on the couple of occasions when I've wanted to use one, no joy. Yes I know I could possibly do it in 'Safe Mode' but that isn't an answer as to why I can't do it in regular mode?

System restore failed to extract the file. from the restore point. There was a disk failure during the restore. This might be caused by bad sectors on the disk. I get the same message, but with a different file name, with every restore point I try, and I have now tried all seven available restore points, going back to 30 Dec 2011. The computer was working perfectly until 3 days ago when it blue screened, and has not started properly since. It is a Corei5 with 4 GB RAM and is only 12 months old. I just dont believe the drive has that many bad sectors.

my Windows 7 after restoring it to factory configurations. I installed Ubuntu 12.04, the installation smooth as butter, but after a few days of usage, the GRUB system screwed up. After a LOT of problems I managed to restore my Laptop to its default configuration. Then, I tried to restore my personal files with the DVDs I made, but when the manager finished, it only showed a folder with all my files in it! And it didn't give me any option to restore these files or something!

So I am about to finish putting together my first gaming PC. (Specs: i5-3570, GB Z77x-UD3H, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, Galaxy 1GB GTX 560 Ti DDR5, CM Storm Enforcer, Win 7 HP 64bit, WD Black Caviar 2TB HDD, Adata SX900 64GB SSD).I am going to ONLY install Win 7 on the SSD and nothing else. So 64GB should be enough. My questions (They are sort of related):I have been confused about what to do while installing Win 7 on the SSD. I have done a lot of search but what I am gathering seems just redundant to me:- Do I or do I not have to create a system recovery/repair disc for Win 7 right after installing it? I mean if Win 7 is going to fail me (and if I have created the disc on the day I installed Win 7 on my SSD), then I can simply do a fresh reinstall from my own original Win 7 DVD that I have right now, right?
- So, exactly at what point is it a good time to create this disc (if creating it makes sense)? Right after the first install?- I have heard of Norton ghost??? or Acronis True Image HD??? Why should I pay for their services IF I can simply buy 3-4 DVD's and create my Win backup on them? It makes sense -financially- to just buy DVD's, right?- As for backing up all my other data, I can just purchase external HD's and Thumb Drives, which I am doing for my current PC anyways, correct?

how to perform a safe manual restore from the Dell Factory Image Partition. The problem is that i dont have the inbuilt option in the RECOERY MENU OPTIONS PAGE because i performed a fresh install of Windows 7 using the Resource DVD that shipped with the system The recovery partition is intact as the Fresh Install worked only upon the OS partition C:. The contents of the Recovery partition are visible in Command Prompt. In the Explorer it contains the following:
1. Recovery(Folder)
2. Info(Application)
Clicking on the "Info" opens a screen pop up which says: "Warning, This is dell recovery partition. Its contents must not be altered." The contents of the Recovery folder are hidden in the command prompt, but using dir /ah I can see the contents and it contains some of these folders and files as i am seeing it right now:
1. Autorun.inf
2. Desktop.ini
3. info.exe
4. A long list of "Protected.arabic" and like files
5. system 32 (dir)
6. windowsre (dir)
How can i restore the Factory image? After reading a lot of pages in different forums, i feel that it is possible to do a manual restore from this Recovery Partition.

I can't get into pc recovery drive (D) to restore pc to original condition in two pcs. I think it is because I reinstalled Windows 7 into drive (C), which prevents pc recovery from drive (D) [because it's not the original software.I can see the recovery drive (D).Also, I used SpotMau to get the windows 7 Ultimate product key, but the lable on the pc shows that Windows7 Pro is installed. The product keys are different.

I have been fixing PCs for friends and family for years, some of them are really good at screwing up an OS a only couple months after i install a fresh copy of xp or 7. i would like to be able to create a restore method simple for them to use to reset there machine back to my initial installed state. was thinking something similar to newer PCs F11 restore method or something i could add to a bootloader in 7 or xp making it a "dualboot" with just the OS and the recovery.

Using preinstalled Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on an HP 6813w Pavilion. The original hard drive, a Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1Tb crashed.1) System Recovery discs was made along with a System Recovery with System Image disc.2) A more current System Image was made on an external hard drive. The Hitachi was replaced with the same model. Checked bios to make sure it was installed correctly.Under System Recovery, Image Restore, Select a System Image Backup there is nothing in the table to choose from as far as a source (disc drive or external drive).A) System Recovery (3 discs) has the HP preinstall file folder on the 3rd disc but is not read by the System Recovery program.B) Under System Restore, Image Restore, Advanced, it asks for a network or driver to be installed. That opens up the directory of C: which is the external hard drive. Under WindowsImageBackup the computer name is identified followed by three entries:[CODE]It seems to me the Recovery and System Restore discs are not functional. Am not a technical person but I have taken this as far as I know how at this point.Printed out all the instructions from HP and Microsoft to follow step by step but the failed discs will not allow me to move forward.

Living is south FL can be a bitch when the rains come as there often is a ton of accompanying lightening that plays havoc with the electrical system, even though I have surge protectors inside and outside the house. We just had some very heavy rains with lightening and my computer shut down several times, but I could restart it each time...except for the last time when Windows wouldn't startup. At that point, Start Up Repair came into play. Although I routinely backup on an external drive, of course I never did it this month-DUH!Results from SUR were error free (error code=0x0) on all the parameters tested, however there were the following error codes reported:"Unspecified change to the system configuration might have caused the problem." Failed: 0x1fRepair Action: System FilesFailed: x490There were more options to select for a recovery task, but I didn't try them as they didn't seem to be as salient as the two above.
