Booting Windows On One Drive, But Installing Things On Another?

My operating system is giving out, i am locking up regularly now, i feel i have too many things installed on a vary small drive to pinpoint the problem. i have been neeeding a second hard drive for a while now, i think its time.The question is, how can i boot off of one hard drive, but install all my applications on the other, as if i where booting my OS off of a 30gb ssd, just big enough for the operating system, but actually installing things on my second hard drive.

When my motherboard fried on my Acer 6930g I bought another Acer 6930g from ebay.
My intention was to put my old hard drive in the new machine and put the new hard drive in the spare hard drive slot that the 6930g has. I have done this and it all works. However.....
As my old HD is nearly full and not running as fast as the empty new one I was thinking of swapping them again. I would though like to put some of my essential programs and docs on the new HD. The new HD has windows 7 home pro 64 bit. My existing HD is windows home 32 bit. I haven't got any of the product keys for my software so i can't reinstall.
How can I move my essential stuff over and keep it working? Not sure if this makes any sense but hoping womeone will know what i am on about.

I'm having a bit of an issue with Windows 7 and XP after dual booting them. I had XP installe,d and then installed 7 on another partition. Everything went fine, except that I can't boot XP: there's no option.
I tried a few things in command prompt such as bcedit /set and most of those commands. It added the option to the menu, but it said that /ntldr was not bootable as it was missing or corrupt.
I also read somewhere that you should try to copy some files like boot.ini to your 7 partition from your XP partition, but that didn't work since I have no access to my XP partition and trying to assign a dirve letter doesn't work: the option is grayed out.

I was going to going to reinstall windows 7 professional x64 version of windows in my laptop but during installation I got structed at the point where the earlier partitions are to be deleted and new ones are to be made(I got the option from custom install) to give the path for new C:// drive and others. Here is the basic of problem, the installation was taking very long time to delete my earlier partitions(nearly 30 mins.). So I derectly pressed the power button and shut down (while the deletion of earlier C:// drive was going on) my laptop eject the DVD on next boot, but now nothing was appearing after booting. So I again tried to do the same installation but this time the installation was stucked at the windows icon ('Starting Windows' Icon).

I was trying to install a ubuntu distribution to my primary hard drive (along side Windows 7) and at 99% of copying files the setup reported there was not sufficient memory to install backtrack. I cannot boot back into windows 7 as the computer resets before getting past the boot screen (shows 'starting windows' as normal then the screen blacks and takes me back to BIOS). this process loops unless I select windows repair option, which does not fix the problem. The Backtrack live CD won't let me delete the new, half-installed partition, so therefore I cannot change the windows partition back to it's usual (small) size of 55GB.

I was wondering if there are any issue with dual booting Windows 7 pro 64 bit on an internal SSD drive. I currently have Windows 7 pro 64 bit on a 500gb 7200 hard drive plus a backup 1 TB 7200 rpm drive; but I wanted the speed I would get by installing win7 pro 64bit on a 250gb SSD drive. I would basically only install specific essential software like Adobe Premeire Pro and Photoshop, among others. I originally was going to use the SDD drive as a scratch disc but after reading, I thought it might be better to just install Win7 on the SSD drive. This way I could also experiment with what would be the best configuration. I still get confused about scratch disc and how useful they are if you have plenty of memory.

Ok I have a emachine e725 running windows 7 32bit and a acer running on windows vista. My emachine recently crashed in the blue screen and I tried to complete a system restore. I was able to get through the advanced boot menu and use the repair your computer option to restore windows. During the windows setup process I got another blue screen and the computer restarting. It then started the process over and once it got to the step that says windows is preparing setup, it gives an error msg saying something along the lines of windows was interupted and needs to restart to complete installation, and it has an option to press ok. This cycle continues and I can not open in safe mode because it says "windows can not complete the installation in safemode. Also the option to repair your computer in the advanced menu options is no longer available. So after wrestling with windows starting up I decided to create a back up and restore disc on my acer for my windows 7 computer. I tried putting it on a disc but it would not boot. So I tried creating a installation disc of windows 7 and tried booting from the cdrom drive. Once I did that I got a error msg saying "device driver not found: MSCD001 No valid cdrom device drivers selected. It then gives me the A:>. Im not sure if I created the disc wrong since I cant unzip the entire file I downloaded with needing an encryption password.

In order to be able to Boot from a flash drive , I understand this ability must be enabled in ones system .I have a desktop and a new laptop in neither of which do I see this choice .I presume this is a choice originally installed on the m/b and it would not , therefore , be possible to use software to enable it ?

I'm trying to install a Windows 7 Profession 64 bit version over a Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit version.
I know this isn't possible without a clean install, but my problem is, the installation won't boot whatsoever.
Two days ago I installed a fresh copy of W7 32 bit over a vista 32 bit with a flash drive on a laptop with no problem, so I know how you make a bootable USB.
This time however, using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool didn't cut it for me as, even though it was prioritzed in BIOS, nothing would happen and W7 32 bit would just boot like normal.
So I tried to manually set up the bootable flash drive, which also didn't work.
After a lot of searching on google, I learned the problem might have something to do with the bootsector not able to be run on a 32 bit OS. [URL] I used the W7 32 bit version I used on the laptop 2 days ago, and put the bootsector of that version on the flash drive.
Again, this didn't work as the computer would just boot windows 7 32 bit like usual (and again, I adjusted the priority in BIOS) Now I got enough of trying the flash drive to work, I tried burning the ISO file on a DVD using Imgburn.
Burning the DVD went smoothly and I quickly had a DVD with the W7 64 bit installation files. This however, didn't solve anything as (again, prioritzing the DVD) W7 would boot up as usual.

I have a laptop that has Vista installed on it. I have an upgrade disc for Windows 7 and I am thinking about performing a "clean installation" over the Vista OS - which I know is allowed, on the following link;click here Now, I would like to create another partition (on the same hard drive) and install Vista (using the same disc that it came with the laptop) onto that blank hard drive partition

This week, I encountered the following strange problem for which I haven't found a final solution so far, though I have found some bandaids. But having a complete solution -or at least a reason why this problem occurs- would be great:I have a working installation of Windows 7 Professional x64 in UEFI mode. The main disk, SSD #1, contains the following partitions (using GPT): ESP, MSR, system, data. An additional disk, HD #2, with a single data partition (using MBR) is also attached to the system. With this setup, everything works fine.Now, after adding another disk, HD #3, to the system -my old system disk (bootable, using MBR, one active primary partition and an extend partition with three logical disks)- Windows will no longer boots completely: The boot process begins, the Windows logo is shown. Then, a message is shown in text mode "Windows is loading files" with a loading bar. After a while the boot process stops and I am dropped into the EFI shell. After removing the offending HD #3, Windows boots normally again.
I tried removing HD #2 and only attaching HD #3 together with SSD #1, but this yielded the same problem. Using SSD #1 by itself works fine though. Booting from a Linux live-cd works without problems. All disks and partitions are found and can be mounted. There, I erased the disk signature from the offending HD #3 and now Windows was able to boot and also found all disks and partitions correctly. But after a reboot the same problem reappeared

Dell M6500 laptop boots W7 to login screen. Display (and external display) goes dark, computer is unresponsive. From network, C drive is accessible. If I remote desktop into the machine, it runs fine. End the remote session and login local, crash within 2 minutes.

For some reason lately some applications I click on show up on my taskbar but do not appear on screen. For example I click Google Chrome and its automatically expands to the right side of the screen and I am not able to move it or see it, I can only see the icon on my taskbar. This happens with a few other things too. I have restarted and it didn't work. This also happens when I click on My Computer, downloads etc. It is very annoying.

I just recieved a brand new gaming computer the other day with windows 7 64bit. I downloaded world of warcraft with utorrent and everything went well, I was able to play and all, shut down my computer, but then when I turned my computer back on world of warcraft was gone for some reason, and I dont know what to do now. Is their any way to get my world of warcraft client back? also is there any way to make sure windows 7 saves everything when it shuts down? because it also didn't save my preferences for my desktop either.

so i recently downloaded a series of windows updates. i guess it's been a while. anyway. ever since i've downloaded and installed the updates, not all content is loading on webpages. also, everytime i try to load aim, it starts to open but randomly closes.for instance on twitter, no matter what link i go to or what i click on, it just goes to the main page. in addition, when i click on a link that should prompt a menu, it won't work. oh and Internet videos aren't loading.

At my job we just went from a windows xp machine to a windows 7 professional. when Some one with out admin rights does anything it asks for someone with admin rights to type in their info (their username and password). For instance, I had one user trying to download an email attachment and it asked for admin permissions. We have other windows 7 pcs in the building and they don't do this. The xp machine before we installed the windows 7 pc didn't do it either. So anyone know how to make it not ask for admin right when doing tasks that shouldn't need admin rights? Yes we are on a network, but their group policy allows them to at least download an attachment or even change their wallpaper.

I had a failure to my system drive (was my fault). Anyhow the drive was still under warranty so I did an RMA with WD. While waiting for my replacement drive, I reinstalled Windows 7 to another HD and it is now my system drive. Now that my replacement drive have arrived, I image the other HD and restore to the replacement HD. My question is, how can I have it boot from the replacement HD?
What I did was mark the old HD as inactive and marked the replacement as active but when I boot up, it tells me it cannot find a boot device.

I bought this computer as an custom product. It was fine but it slowed down drammatically over the past week. So some people suggested i should try to reinstall Windows 7. The installation went fine but when I was done with the installation i found out lots of things were not functioning any more. For example the computer can't detect the graphics card and claims that it only finds the Standard VGA thingy. I used to connect to interest with Lan cable to the router but that doesnt work either as no options showed up when i want to connect to a new network. Sound isn't working either as it says no headphones detected while there was one plugged in all time. The sata-3 usb port isnt working at all. So is there anything i can do to fix this total mess and get back to work soon? I did create an system image before i reinstalled the system but that wasn't recognized when i have the hard drive plugged in. So everything was in an chaos and i have no clue what should i do next.

I noticed that when I save anything using Google Chrome (my primary browser), whether it be Pictures or Websites, my three gadgets (calendar, clock, weather) blink and flash to the top of my processes. I've tried disabling them and renabling them, but it doesn't work. Turning them off obviously solves the problems.

I'll start out by saying that I don't like Windows 7 search. I liked "Search for files named . . ." or "Search for files containing text .but as usual no one asked me.My problem is one that I've had since I upgraded to Win 7. I have my user folders on E: and I set a junction to point C:UsersBarnabas to E:UsersBarnabas. Pretty simple. If I reference C:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc the file E:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc opens. Way cool.The problem is that for some reason this confused Windows search.Let's say I open up my desktop user folder and select Documents. I know that I have a file called Dogs.doc but I don't remember which folder it is in. So I put Dogs.doc into "Search" and hit go. No files found. However, if I open "My Computer" and navigate to E:SystemUsersBaranbas and do the same search, the file is found.Does anyone know of a fix for this problem. I know that I can use another search tool like FileSearchEX but MS was nice enough to put that Search box on nearly every window, I feel like I should take advantage of it.

When I am installing Windows (XP or 7), I first set the computer's CMOS to "Boot from CD ROM" first. Then I put the factory CD or DVD into the drive. Then I turn the machine on. After POST, I see the message "Press any key to boot from CD" and it continues. OK - that's normal
Now - let's do this: I copy the image of the bootable CD onto a flash drive. I then set the computer to "Boot from USB Flash drive" first. I install the flash drive. I turn the machine on. I never see the message "Press any key to boot from CD".
The computer's BIOS has several choices of "boot from flash drive" Which one do I choose? Question: Do I have to format the flash as a bootable? Is a simple "copy all" from a factory installation disk sufficient? Should I use a "clone' program to prepare the flash drive?

I am currently trying to install Windows 7 Professional RTM to my computer. After installing it onto my laptop, I followed the same exact steps to install the 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit on my netbook. A problem that occured is that when I go on the bios, there is several options to boot from, and none of them are working. I tried USB-CD, USB-FDD, USB-HDD and none are working... Does anyone have any suggestions?

My computer yesterday was an XP machine with one hard drive. I wanted to test Windows 7 but I was afraid I would screw something up with my XP drive in the process. We'll call this Drive A.
Yesterday I bought a new hard drive, Drive B. I downloaded the Windows 7 ISO, got some drivers, and turned off my computer. I physically removed Drive A from the computer and put Drive B in. I started the computer and put the DVD in. Setup was fine, I had some trouble with getting the onboard NIC to work but I was able to overcome.
Now I needed to get back into my XP install to get some stuff done (play video games). I shut my computer down, pulled out Drive B, put Drive A back in and booted up. But I got a boot error message, and it looks like it's a Windows 7 Boot error message. How can this be if I removed the hard drive.

It's almost as if my computer is trying to boot to Windows 7 even though I removed the hard drive containing the operating system. How do I get into my XP system? The drive is fine, I connected it as a slave and I can access the files on there. I'm guess Windows 7 makes some kind of change on the motherboard that forces it to boot to 7?

I did a clean install of windows 7, and things are not responding and hanging.My computer used to be a hp pavilion p71142 I kept the processor, dvd drive, ram, and hard-drive from it, but did my own build.Before I did my own build, I was having trouble with windows. It was slow and it got to the point where windows would not load/boot. I did a fresh install before I started changing hardware, but still slow.The only thing changed when my computer was hp is the graphic card and psu. But those worked fine for several months with no problems. I have got to the stage again now, where windows 7 will not load, and I can't even get into startup repair.

My friend asked me to fix her laptop, which has been failing to boot, getting as far as the blue Windows 7 login screen then hanging. The login UI doesn't load, it's just the blue background.I tried to re-install Windows from the boot disc, but when I put in the disc, I wasn't able to boot from it. Instead the computer booted from the hard-drive again and hung at the same place. This is after changing the boot priority in the BIOS.Since the laptop is out of warranty, and is to all intents and purposes a brick, I removed the Hard-drive, and connected it to my computer to see if I could reformat the drive from there. The thing that has really puzzled me though, is that my computer wouldn't boot when this hard drive was attached, despite running fine before I attached the drive, and after I removed it.
Which leads me to think there's possibly a really malicious virus or something on the drive, which makes it the default boot device, despite having a corrupted operating system installed that won't boot.

I'm using an HP laptop and made a bootable flash key with the Microsoft utility (which I downloaded from Microsoft) to make a Windows 7 installation. I (supposedly) changed the boot order in the bIOS to look first at the key. Didn't work - booted directly into Windows 7 (seemingly bypassed the bootable key).
1. How do I tell if the USB key is bootable?
2. What might be the reason(s) why my laptop won't boot from the USB key?
