Backup Disk Is Not Bootable
Jul 9, 2011
To improve the reliability of my system, I bought an identical second hard drive, which Windows 7 recognized. I then used a CD-based cloning program to clone the second drive to be identical to the first. If I disconnect the first drive, I can successfully boot from the second drive. With both drives connected, I can boot from the first and the BIOS recognizes both drives, but Windows does not see the second drive. Can I fix this so that Windows recognizes both drives?I plan to run the cloning program once a week. Is there a better way? My computer has RAID available, but the backup disk is not bootable.

I have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.
I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.
If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?

I have a compaq presario that keeps showing this. I put another HDD in and it is saying the same thing. Does it mean the old HDD was buggered and I need to do something to the new one to sort out boot order or anything? or is this not a HDD issue. I have two broken compaq presarios here. One with no screen working and one saying no bootable disk drive.

I come with cap in hand and head bowed in shame at this, my first post - after so many months reading the knowledge that so many of you seem to have.
I seek your help if you would please. After downloading at 45k all day what I believed (and still believe to be!) was the iso image of the RC, I (merely?) have the RC content that I need to create a bootable disc.
I have used Bart's BBIE to extract a boot image file from my previous W7_7068 disc and I now have 'image1.bin' at 2k.
But from here? - How and where do I merge this bin file with my W7_RC content? (I'm using 'CDBurnerXP').
Call me a 'noob'or call me a 'knob', either way I'll cop it sweet.

I own a Dell xps M1530 with a: 2.0 ghz dual core processor, 3gb of RAM, and (currently) a 360gb 7200rpm hard drive. I have purchased Windows 7 professorial 32bit to upgrade from Vista. Not shortly afterwards my hard drive started to go so I bought a new one(better on of coarse) I want to upgrade the RAM in my laptop to 8gb and I need a 64bit os to do so. I now am using Ubuntu 64bit on my laptop until I install windows. I have legally got the installers for the 64bit version of Windows 7 professional. I am planning on using the same key for the 64bit version which after research I believe will work. Right now I am having problems installing 7. I would really like to not have to waste a DVD to install it. I used some Microsoft utility to extract the ISO to a thumb drive which, I believe is bootable in the purpose of installing 7. Every time I try loading the os from the Thumb drive I get this error message:
Error: Unknown file system
Grub Rescue
Also, the Setup.exe file for installing windows doesn't seem to run under a linux operating system even with wine.

I recently purchaced a new notebook, shipped with Windows 7 64-bit HP. I need 32-bit in order to run certain programs, so I used my Windows 7 Ult DVD and installed it on this laptop. I did not delete the recovery partition that was already on the drive, but I re-installed my own Windows 7 on the partition with the pre-installed Windows 7. This was a mistake... I lack a lot of drivers and pre-compiled software that is not available for download from the manufactor. So, I hope there is a way to make the recovery disk bootable, so I can boot from it in order to respawn the pre-installed Windows 7.

I am about to buy a new internal hard drive for my laptop, and want to do a clean install of Windows 7. My laptop came with XP, but I did an online upgrade to Windows 7 (student edition) Professional.
How can I create a bootable Windows 7 disk so when I put my new hard drive in my computer, it will setup Windows 7 for me? I also don't have any old XP disks because my laptop didn't come with any.
I looked on my C: Drive but couldnt find any .iso files or anything like that?

I have an HP dv5 notebook PC with windows 7 (64bit) I3 cpu m330@2.13 ghz. I recently had to wipe my hard drive due to a virus. I bought this 2nd hand and wasn't provided any disks. I do have a Dell re-installation DVD with the same OS. I realize this disk won't install my drivers but was hoping there was a way i could install just the OS and download the drivers after. I do have the original product key for the HP. Now when i start up it says "No bootable disk-- insert boot disk and press any key" or "Media test failure, check cable". Even with before mentioned re-installation disk inserted. When i goto Setup Utility: Diagnostics and run the Primary Hard Disk Self Test and the memory Test it Passes both. When i go to System configuration (f10) this is what i see[CODE]

The backup drive is FULLY BOOTABLE, I've been booting into Windows 7 from an eSata external interface with no issues. It has a partition with my backed up Win7 installation and the rest is just unallocated spaceMy problem is restoring the backup to my new 160 GB drive. I've tried every which way to copy the partition over but it's never bootable - when I try to repair from the Windows CD using the GUI or command line tools it never works out

And then do a complete restore once the D drive is emptied?

Has anyone tried to burn a System Image (with Windows Backup and Restore) onto a BD-R disk?I have 52.5 GB used on my C drive (Windows 7 x64). I have a clean install, with windows updates, and it would be phenomenal if I could use my WH12LS30 (LG) internal blu-ray burner for the System Image creation, since I only have 1 harddrive. When I try a BD-R (and this is my 1st try at System Image burn) , I see "The media needs to be formatted before it can be used...". Just didn't sound right to procede.

I bought a computer on craigslist a while back and it's been working great and all but lately it started slowing down really badly. I play WoW and Skyrim mostly. I used to be able to play at 60 fps or so now I can drop from 30-15 fps. I considered doing a system restore but there weren't any restore points because there weren't any being created every week or so for some reason. So really the only option I have now is to completely restore my computer to it's original settings. When I first bought the computer the guy who sold it to me told me that he'd wiped the hard drives clean and that's what I'm trying to do right now but he never gave me a back up disk or a disk for the OS which is what I'm really worried about. He had windows 7 ultimate installed. I'm afraid that if I try to do a factory reset that I won't have an OS to reinstall onto my computer.
These are my specs if they matter any.

I manage a large array of disks and rely on Robocopy via batch files to backup only changed data. This has served me well for a year or so now. However, last week I had a drive go flakey. For some reason all of the folders on the drive beginning with letters K through Z got trashed. Since no one realized this the backup script ran on schedule and promptly deleted all folders on my backup drive beginning with letters K through Z.
I've used a couple of backup programs in the past and I'm fairly sure this issue is not adressed.

drives partially failed and deleted all folders beginning with letters K through Z. When my backup script ran it deleted all of the same folders on the backup drive. I received a reply from a user (don't have access to the name right now) who suggested a freeware sync package which most likely would work. However, company policy states that no freeware is to be run on our systems. While I could probably get away with it a question comes to mind - Why isn't this a standard feature in commercially available backup software. There must be a name for this type of option. Does anyone know of a commercially available package and / or what this feature might be called? I can't be the only person who has run into this problem.

I'm expieriencing a problem I can't fix.
There raises a flag that I have to make a Backup. I thought and read this is a well worked out function in Windows 7, let's try !
But as you expect and the reason why I'm here, there is a difficulty.
The function wants to backup 2 hard drives (C: and H:) and I can't uncheck H:. C: is my windows disk and H: is my disk where I keep movies and stuff . I don't want to backup H: . I only want to back up C:!
What I read on several places is that Windows 7 Automatically selects the drivers which contains System files (in the back up function he calls H: a system disk). In Disk Management it also says Disk H: System/Active/Primary Partition.
I am for sure I installed Windows 7 on C:. I didn't do anything on H:.
Also an other thing I found out is that MSE uses the biggest drive for downloading updates and installing the updates (use it as source). But I don't know if that is the reason it is called a system disk.
I want to make my backup this way, how can I only make a backup of C:

I have a friend that burned me an antivirus program that his job uses, he used a flash drive to get it on dvd. I can extract it to the desktop, but cannot boot from it. Is there a way to make the disk bootable, because it is supposed to be bootable in its true form. I can still run the program, but if something was seriously wrong, I would not be able to boot from it, wanna know if that is possible!
