Make A Backup Copy Of A New Program Disk In Windows 7?
Feb 1, 2011
I know this is a simple question, but how do I make a backup copy of a new program disk in Windows 7... which I am allowed to do (according to the terms and agreement)? I want to do this so I have a backup in case the original disk fails.
In order to make an older program run, I have to copy a stack of dll/ocx files into System32, and then register them. Yes, it's crappy design, but it's a game editor for an older game, and I'm evidently the last tech-savvy admin. That, or a sucker.I copied them onto the desktop, and am trying to copy them from there into the system32 directory. I hit the UAC prompt, and select continue. Then it tells me I need to provide permission for it. I am a local admin (as well as a domain admin).
I work in an architecture office using Quickbooks to track hours, expenses, billing, etc. The company QB files reside on the server in a shared directory that is mapped as drive Z: on all machines through a domain logon script that runs when each person logs on to their machine. The company file runs in multi-user mode so that everyone can access the file and enter their hours at the same time. The problem is that if anyone happens to leave Quickbooks open at night, the server backup process (running BackupExec) will skip the files that are in use, usually either 2 or 3 files. This is potentially bad news because if anything happened to the server the following day after those files were skipped, we would not have the file from the night before to restore, which could potentially mean lots of information lost (sometimes lots of info is entered in one day, especially on "billing" days).Sometimes people will leave in the afternoon for a meeting, thinking they'll be back later and leave their programs open. But then the meeting ends up running long and they don't come back until the next day. That's usually why Quickbooks ends up getting left open on a machine overnight. What I'm wondering is if there's a way to make the program automatically close, if it's open on any machine, perhaps just before the backup process starts on the server. Or, make the program close if the computer has been idle a certain amount of time.Is there any way to make this happen? All machines in our office that have Quickbooks on it run Windows 7, except for one machine that still runs XP.
Just bought this net-book that came with Win 7 Premium. The first thing they recommend is to make a copy of their OS. Now this netbook did not come back with a burner, which i was aware of anyway. They do recommend a usb flash drive with the capacity of 12 gb's. I do not want to have to spend more money on another gadget just to make a copy of it. I do have a burner in my desktop which i have networked to the net-book, and am trying to see if i could at least copy or share it to my desktop and make copies there...but having a heck of a time so far.
I'd like to just do a clean install of Windows 7 Pro on a new drive for the same computer and use the previous drive for storage. But want to make sure everything goes well first. Oh and it's the windows 7 pro OEM system builder pack version.
one week ago i purchased HP-1000 series laptop which came with pre installed windows 7 but my hard drive failed and a new hard drive is given to me but i dont have the cd of windows 7 or the backup please suggest how to install a valid copy of windows 7 using product key
I am not able to make backup, I get message not enough free space for shadow copy? How do I resolve this? I understand some kind of USN journal is created on System reserved partion. This hidden partition was created when I installed and now I have only 38Mb free out of 100Mb. As I understand this has been an Issue for more than a year, and still Microsoft has not resolved?
I was wondering if there was anyway that I could make like a master copy of an OS, particularly Windows XP, but also Vista and 7. If this is a lame question please forgive me as I am not the most computer savvy , but I'm looking to have a copy of each of the above mentioned OS's that I can use to trouble shoot my friends and families computers, but I'm afraid I'm going to run into issues with the product keys only being able to be used a limited number of times. Is there anyway around this? Is there a more expensive master copy type disk that you can buy for such a purpose?
currently have Windows 7 64bit on a 120gb SSD, in my desktop homebuilt PC, its working fantastic, but of course im running out of space, so ive been and bought myself a 240gb SSD.My question is this, is there anyway of copying the 120gb onto the 240gb to make it a bootable drive exactly like my 120gb, as i dont wish to do the whole re-install thingy as i have everything working just how i like it.
I have a client who has gotten a new computer (win 7) with a new version of solitaire. The problem is that his voice recognition won't work properly with this version and he would like to use the old win xp version which was customized to work with his speech recognition.
Ok I have the Windows 7 Ultimate beta, and was wondering how do I make a copy of my hard drive so that I can transfer all of my stuff to my new Windows 7? I have 2 hard drives, and I want to be able to play games on my new version of Windows 7 like Call of Duty without having to re-install them or re-download them. I know I can't use the easy tansfer wizard on this version of windows, so what do I do?
Am I only allowed to make one copy of my Recovery partition?I have a Dell desktop, with a built in Dell recovery partition. I have read that. "You are only allowed to make ONE copy of your Recovery partition and it must be on to ROM CDs or DVDs."I didn't know that when I made a copy of C and recovery partition to my external drive, I am a bit concered that I can only do this once. Is that strictly true?
Below is a batch file I created to copy all the files from a program called A5V5. This batch file works to copy the files to two different drives What I want to do is if the J: Directory is not availble (This is a flash drive) that it will copy to the E: directory which is a second HDD and not leave a "The system cannot find the drive specified" when the flash drive is not inserted.
@echo off cd c: cd program files (x86) cd A5V5 cd Ranch Mobile, Inc Copy *.* "E:Ranch Mobile" (This is a second hard drive for backup files only) Copy *.* "J:Ranch Mobile" (This is a Flash drive that is not always inserted) Pause
I like the way batch files work and I can do these simple ones but when it comes to doing the more complicated ones I am at a total loss.
I have an external enclosure. Could anyone point to me where to go and read in point blank detail step by step how to:
1. Make a mirror image backup copy of the pc hard drive including partitions and the OS..
2. How to set it in such a way that I could save the eventual changes produced in that backed up copy by doing in future just an incremental back up each time (of only what has changed since the previous backup).I am running Windows 7 Home 64-bit.
I have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port: 1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop. 2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.
I have already made my "Outer Volume" on my back up HDD with Truecrypt & now using Second Copy to copy my main media HDD to my backup HDD. Once I copy the data & am then going to create the "hidden volume" option Truecrypt offers. How will this sync up with Second copy? If it makes a difference in syncing second copy I would also like to set up the main media HDD the same way with the Outer volume & hidden volume options. So keeping it a perfect encrypted sync if possible.
I want to do a 100% backup of the C: drive on my PC. Since Tom's Forums still doesn't have a forum search (although I'm sure it did before Tom sold out) I'll ask in innocence.Supposedly XCOPY has been bonged in Win 7 and replaced by ROBOCOPY. If I copy ROBOCOPY to another drive, will I be able to do a 100% backup of my C: drive to an external USB 1.5TB HDD? Is there there something better that might just compress and backup?
It seems that the copy and replace only checks names, but I would want the older files to be replaced by the newer ones, and to be ignored if they have the same names and dates. ouadad has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.
I have windows 7 home premium os when i try to do a pc backup everything goes just as its supposed to includeing inserting the blank disc but thats where it all ends i hit the start button and it won't start the backup just keeps telling me to put in a blank disc so whats wrong
When I try to make a selective backup on a plug and play it loads all my files and refuses to let me choose, how do I bring it to heel.Running Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop.
What is backed up in the backup program that comes with Windows 7? Also, is it an incremental backup? I can find nothing about the backup online, that gives specifics about the service.
Windows 7 has a backup recover program. After you have ceated a system image to an external drive, there is, at the lower part of the page, a word "Restore" Which words do you click here to make a recovery of the entire pc system that you created?
I have tried a few backup programs but I'm trying to find out the best way of copying around 500gb of files and keeping all the dates, attributes and security permissions intact?
I am making regular backups - both the image backup and the file sets using Windows 7 Backup program. No problems with that.
But, I periodically would like to copy the image backup to a portable drive. I plan to take this portable drive offsite to a secure location - I call it my archive.
Is this possible? What files must I copy? Do I have to maintain a certain directory structure or naming convention in case I have to use the archived copy to restore (assume a bare metal restoration)?
I thought I could just copy the VHD files (boot and system) but the image backup has other directories and files and I just don't understand their purpose.
I need to copy these files rather than running the backup over again to this portable archive device. I have multiple computers and it is impractical for me to physically access each computer to re-run an image backup to the same archive device.
My archive device is a regular USB/eSata HDD and I don't plan to put VSS on it.
