Which File Backup Programs Can Copy Attributes/permissions
Mar 24, 2012
I have tried a few backup programs but I'm trying to find out the best way of copying around 500gb of files and keeping all the dates, attributes and security permissions intact?

In Windows Seven x64, from Outlook 2007, I save a message in the .msg format on my C: drive in the Documents folder.
In explorer, I select the "Details" view and I add a column to see the "From" attribute. Nothing shows in this column.

I am using Ajaxplorer which is great but I am having some issues with file permissions. Let's say I create a file which is read only in Ajaxplorer it says it's changed file permissions but when I right click on the file to check it it's the same permissions as it was so didn't actually change.

I want to install the AI utilities that came with my Asus P8P67 Motherboard. When I have them installed, however, all of the non-admin accounts keep getting a string of 5-6 admin password requests to allow the programs to make changes. This happens upon every login and is more than a little tedious.I tried to run them as an administrator but that didn't change anything.I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Professional if it matter.

Dell Desktop Windows XP 32 bit IE7 no free memory to download anything. Can't remove programs, no security tab. No windows installer in safe mode. I've confused myself now. Cannot access any file due to permissions. Need to know how to remove programs, then reset permissions. I've been trying to work on this for two days. Can't seem to make sense of any of the great information and tools available, because I don't know which to address first.

I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

i needed to pawn my laptop for a short time and didnt want my files to be viewed by anyone while it was not in my possesion, so what i did i changed the file permissions of my c: drive so that only admin had fulll control and no one else. well now i cant access my c: drive with my admin accrt. nor will it let me change the file permissions either. also a hand full of other things will not work such as the internet explorer icon on the task bar or start menu but i can open i.e. from the recently viewd submenu from the i.e. icon on the start menu. also i can open files on my c: drive from any old shortcut icons i had left on my desktop but i cant acces them directly from explorer. so i found some work arounds but really need to get full control of my h/d.

We have a home network of 7 computers and have been using Win 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro Plus together without error since about May until mid-summer when I began using MS Outlook. When I started using Outlook on my laptop it took over all user permissions on the network making me the administrator/owner. I don't know if Outlook is responsible. I am just making connections with the timing. Folders were shared that should not have been shared and the file system got mixed up. Files came up with strange attribute settings. It appears that my computer encrypted files that reside on other computers leaving other users unable to access them.
On the occasions that we have wiped my hard drive and others to fix the problem by starting over, everything seems fine until I start using MS Outlook again. It may be important to know that I am the only one that uses Outlook on the network. And, by the way, when I say start over, I mean that we wiped drives with various software such as DriveScrubber, and others, to no avail. Later, we used disk part and thought we had it licked, but NO. After that, we discovered how to delete the volume shadow copies, but it still comes back every time like a haunting or something.
We even bought brand new hard drives and installed them on all computers, bought a firewalled router, and carefully and meticulously reinstalled our software from disks making sure that everything was in order. We have isolated old files to eliminate the possibility of virus or malware. We have discussed the problem with the cable company and with Norton. I can accept the fact that I might have changed a setting unknowingly in the beginning, however, the problem will not go away after careful reinstallation and setup.

sporadic (4 out of 10) issues with saving files. Opens file from the network (AD) drive adds data which takes about 10 min. then saves the file. The save appears to be successful then user closes file and gets file permissions erro Yes or No to save file to another location or change name. They save it to another location. The original file disappears from the network drive.

I have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.

I have already made my "Outer Volume" on my back up HDD with Truecrypt & now using Second Copy to copy my main media HDD to my backup HDD. Once I copy the data & am then going to create the "hidden volume" option Truecrypt offers. How will this sync up with Second copy? If it makes a difference in syncing second copy I would also like to set up the main media HDD the same way with the Outer volume & hidden volume options. So keeping it a perfect encrypted sync if possible.

I want to do a 100% backup of the C: drive on my PC. Since Tom's Forums still doesn't have a forum search (although I'm sure it did before Tom sold out) I'll ask in innocence.Supposedly XCOPY has been bonged in Win 7 and replaced by ROBOCOPY. If I copy ROBOCOPY to another drive, will I be able to do a 100% backup of my C: drive to an external USB 1.5TB HDD? Is there there something better that might just compress and backup?

Having difficulty with a homegroup and file sharing: one desktop PC with the family's main documents (which are on a separate drive to the system) and two laptops which need to access those documents. I've got them all seeing each other, and they can see the folders in the drive, but when I try to add files or rename files, it tells me that I need permission. I've gone through the advance settings to make sure the correct permission is selected, they all have the same workgroup name and different computer names. Sharing the printer attached to the desktop is fine.

My PC was somehow configured so that I cannot copy files from the internal hard drive to a USB pen drive (e.g., to make a back-up).
When I try to do this, I get the following message: "Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action."
There is definitely enough room on the USB drive. The USB drive is configured with a password, which I entered correctly after plugging in the drive. After doing this, I am able to see the files from the drive. The configuration is such that I can copy files from the USB drive to the PC's hard drive, but I can't copy in the other direction, which is what I need to do.
This sounds like a Windows permissions issue to me. I have taken ownership of the file in question, and I have assigned full control to that file.

I am experiencing a problem with Windows 7 professional, 32 bit, where I am getting an error message (detailed below) when trying to open a file with an unregistered extension. For example, if I rename a file that ends in .txt and contains text, to something with a .test extension the "Open with..." dialog never appears, and I instead get the permission denied message. AVG premium is installed, however through a combination of disabling AVG as well as providing exceptions to the file extension, I can fairly safely rule out intervention from AVG. Windows Defender is disabled, Windows UAC is disabled as well. The Windows Firewall is on, but checking the settings for the firewall suggest no issues would be coming from there. To add to the fire, if I register the .test extension to open with notepad, the file will open fine and text is displayed as expected. Also of note, I can read the file from command prompt even when the extension is not registered to an application.

I am making regular backups - both the image backup and the file sets using Windows 7 Backup program. No problems with that.
But, I periodically would like to copy the image backup to a portable drive. I plan to take this portable drive offsite to a secure location - I call it my archive.
Is this possible? What files must I copy? Do I have to maintain a certain directory structure or naming convention in case I have to use the archived copy to restore (assume a bare metal restoration)?
I thought I could just copy the VHD files (boot and system) but the image backup has other directories and files and I just don't understand their purpose.
I need to copy these files rather than running the backup over again to this portable archive device. I have multiple computers and it is impractical for me to physically access each computer to re-run an image backup to the same archive device.
My archive device is a regular USB/eSata HDD and I don't plan to put VSS on it.

I have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.
I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.
If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?

I am still experiencing the dreaded Windows 7 "let us take control of your system" scenarios. As usual, if I create a folder and attempt to save in it, I am denied access, though this is not such an issue, as I use Take Ownership to handle this.
My problem is all of the subfolder in the My Documents folder have Read Only as the attribute and I have tried everything I know to change it.
As a last resort I have used a command prompt and used the attrib command to do the job, but with no success trying various different combinations. I tried just running command normally and then tried it as an administrator, but again no success.
This was the final command I tried attrib -r +a "H:My Documents*.*" /S /D but still no success. Does anyone know a way that will work to remove the read only attributes from all of my folders?
