Aug 31, 2012I ask if its possibly to make a F10 backup of my current drive so that should something go "pear shaped" then the option to restore my PC would be there.There is currently a hidden partition on my laptop with recovery software on it however as I resised the partition on the C drive this somehow "broke" the recovery software and is apparently a well know issue with Lenovo and their onekey recovery software.

Feb 8, 2012I swear I am hitting every problem possible with this computer!! After much frustration for two days, I have done a clean Win 7 Ultimate install. I am running a SSD/HDD combo. Intel Rapid Storage kept flagging my mechanical drive as faulty (even after I reset it back to normal). I got tired of the message and just turned off the feature... I have been having trouble making a backup image. I REALLY need a backup disk since I had to turn off "System Restore Points" so that it wouldn't bloat my SSD. I noticed that it will successfully go through making a backup of my C drive (the SSD) and when it hits the mechanical drive, the backup will fail and I will get the 0x8078015b error.
Does anyone know how to fix this or what I can do to make a backup without using the Win 7 utility? Is my mechanical drive really faulty?? Is it my external that I am trying to make the backup to being faulty?I saw someone else with this same problem and even after getting all new drives twice, the problem persisted and it never seemed to get resolved... My HDD is a WD Caviar Black 750 GB. I really need this computer up and running ASAP and as I have purchased the mech.

Sep 22, 2011I work in an architecture office using Quickbooks to track hours, expenses, billing, etc. The company QB files reside on the server in a shared directory that is mapped as drive Z: on all machines through a domain logon script that runs when each person logs on to their machine. The company file runs in multi-user mode so that everyone can access the file and enter their hours at the same time.The problem is that if anyone happens to leave Quickbooks open at night, the server backup process (running BackupExec) will skip the files that are in use, usually either 2 or 3 files. This is potentially bad news because if anything happened to the server the following day after those files were skipped, we would not have the file from the night before to restore, which could potentially mean lots of information lost (sometimes lots of info is entered in one day, especially on "billing" days).Sometimes people will leave in the afternoon for a meeting, thinking they'll be back later and leave their programs open. But then the meeting ends up running long and they don't come back until the next day. That's usually why Quickbooks ends up getting left open on a machine overnight.What I'm wondering is if there's a way to make the program automatically close, if it's open on any machine, perhaps just before the backup process starts on the server. Or, make the program close if the computer has been idle a certain amount of time.Is there any way to make this happen? All machines in our office that have Quickbooks on it run Windows 7, except for one machine that still runs XP.

Sep 4, 2012I got a new laptop recently (Windows 7 Home Premius SP1), and but there were several dozen updates that wouldn't install. After looking around online a bit, I eventually decided to go to msconfig and change the startup to only boot with windows programs, which solved that particular problem.Now however I can't change it back to normal startup.If I change it back and click apply, then when I go back in the setting is as before. If I just click "okay" and restart with new settings, then it does a selective startup anyway and reverts the settings.

I can sit there and the drive will spin up and then turn off every 30-45 min, it spins up and then spins down pretty fast as if it was just work up by me and then it is going back to sleep - I cant figure out what on my computer is waking it up but I dont care I dont want it to even go to sleep in the first place
I dont want the USB drives to ever, ever, EVER! spin down no matter what I dont care about power useage or drive life, I cant effing stand this, when I boot into Linux no problems at all the drive will stay running for hours at a time but stupid effing Windows dont work
USB Selective Suspend Won't Stay Disabled
Aug 31, 2012I just upgraded my HTPC and so built my first Windows 7 PC (never had a need to upgrade from XP, believe it or not). So far I am quite impressed but I am having a number of issues with power management. I'd love some help tying all these together so I'll start at the beginning.I've had the machine running for two weeks now. It's an Intel DH77DF mobo, all the newest drivers on it, fresh from Intel's site. At first I noticed the keyboard would become unresponsive after a while -- not even the lights for caps/num lock would turn on (MS Wired Keyboard 600). So I figured it was shutting off the USB ports and so I went into Device Manager and hit the properties for all USB ports and unchecked allowing Windows to shut them off to save power. I then went to power management and turned it on to maximum performance.
Next morning, I wake up and go to hit the PC to put on some music and the keyboard is unresponsive again. (Aside: I have two keyboards connected, the MS one mentioned earlier and a Logitech diNovo Mini for HTPC stuff. There's also an old MS wired mouse attached (which has never lost power, oddly enough).) I restart to bring the keyboard back around -- because unplugging it and putting it in any USB port won't bring it back -- and when I restart, it takes FOREVER. I'm talking 15-20 minutes (when boot after POST takes like 30 seconds). The restart eventually craps out to a BSOD: power driver state failure, error code 0x9F.So I researched that error and most of the advice seems to come to "run sfc scannow" (done, more than once, no issues) and "update your drivers" (already done). I looked in the event viewer for evidence of that crash but don't think I found anything.
I found a page on a registry entry you can make for disabling selective suspend in USB completely, and I've done that, and it says it's disabled under the advanced settings in power management, but, I dunno...my peripherals still die. I noticed something during this morning's restart. I had my work laptop on and it's a Mac, and Finder always shows the devices on the network. During the long shutdown that goes to bluescreen, the HTPC is not on the network before restart, comes on to to the network five minutes or so into the long shutdown, hangs out on the network for a few minutes, disappears, and then BSOD about a minute after that. It's not just USB shutting down, I guess (if I had a SATA device I'd test that too).

But I got a unrepairable error and had to re-install Windows.Basically, I re-installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and then loaded a System Backup Image that wouldn't load in System Restore and I was back to square one, with a nice new registry, that was totally EMPTY. I have ALL my files from the last install, in addition to the Windows.old folder.But what do I do with them? How do I get all the right bits in the right places without totally researching every pre-installed app?Or better yet, is there any software that can help me do this? I'm a graphic artist, so all my 2d/3d design & web developer apps need to have their special configs replaced, or I have a year of configuring down the drain (3DS Max is totally different that stock, for example). Also, theres my "Fallout: New Vegas" and other game saves and my special Web Development Browser plug-ins. Oh, I forgot about all my FTP site logins and passwords.Fortunately, I had installed KeePass the day before the crash (when I made the Backup Image too!), so my other Logins/PWs are intact. I recommend all you guys with lots of passwords to manage get this great app. Just don't match the PW file to your current install's User account. I'd be screwed if I had done so.
I guess most the stuff can just be replaced with new versions and I can tinker with them to get it all as it was.I just couldn't find any threads about this particular subject, beyond the basic "How to Load a System Image Restore Image", etc.I was just wondering if there were any options other than dealing with each software install individually.

I have replaced my father's wired modem (he's with PostOffice.com in the UK) with a Belkin Surf+ (F7D2301uk) router running firmware version 1.00.16. When he tries to access the network from his Tosh C660 Win 7 Home Premium, 64bit laptop the network connection between the laptop & router disconnects after a minute or so. The only way to reestablish a connection is to Disconnect and Connect again in the Wireless Network section of Networking panel. But here's the weird bit. My own Mac Book keeps connected fine without any problems as does my Sony Ericsson X10 phone.

Sep 4, 2011I have main PC [office_PC]. On that PC is basically everything. music, pics, videos etc. It is the primary computer but I also have a laptop and a tablet that access that data too. I need/want full access to everything on the office-PC read/write. no problem easily done and I have had no issues currently until today. (64 bit win 7 system)
My daughter saved up and purchased a netbook [Morgan-Netbook] (OS:win 7 starter). I got her on the network and when connected it asked about homegroup so I said yes and now I see her and she sees me. BUT she has full read/write access to everything on the PC. I can access everything I would expect via the homegroup but then under the "network" icon I can see all my shared folders and she has way more access.
I would like her to have read access to pics, videos and specific folders but not necessarily everything else. I have tried adding her as a user in the sharing permissions but my Office PC only wants to see Location as "office-PC" so I cannot choose her from a list to restrict her access specifically. If I limit the access globally then I lose it for me as well. How do I limit access to just her so that she can see the folders we want but she only has READ access?
Make Windows XP Or Windows 7 Wakeup At Backup Time
Jan 24, 2010I have standalone windows xp Machines that are in standby during the night and standalone windows 7 machines that are in sleep during the night. I am wondering what is the best way to get them to wake up so that my backup program can run a scheduled backup job at like 2am?
I have tried just setting the scheduled backup in my program (Cobain Backup), but it doesn't seem to work very often, and I think that the machines are just not waking up. The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

May 8, 2011I backup 100GB of data with Windows Backup and over the time where I do all my backups there is like only 30GB of data which changed from those 100GB and also new files were added. Now my external drive is full. When I now delete the very early backup, the first one where the 100GB of data was saved, will it delete then ALL those 100 GB, or will it just delete the previous versions of the files which were modified AFTER that time, which are in this case the 30GB I talked about? Because otherwhise I would then have in the end an uncomplete, messed up backup.
