Windows Explorer Restarted By Restart Manager On Logon
Jun 4, 2012
I've just booted my machine, and after logging in heard the default sound that gets played when the computer is shut down. Obviously this isn't normal, so I checked the Event Viewer and found the following events.
Starting session 1 - 2012-06-03T09:12:20.323285600Z.
Shutting down application or service 'Windows Explorer'.
Restarting application or service 'Windows Explorer'.
Ending session 1 started 2012-06-03T09:12:20.323285600Z.
Has anyone else encountered this, and what does it mean? From a Google search, it looks like Restart Manager had to restart Explorer for some reason. I can't figure out why, though.

I've been having an issue with Windows Explorer when it's restarted. If I restart Windows Explorer, My Computer, My Documents, and Recycle Bin will not respond at all. If I try to move, copy, or delete a file it will just hang up and not respond.I don't have any of these issues when Windows Explorer runs the initial time after turning on my PC or login/relogin to an account. But if for some reason I need to restart Windows Explorer, I might as well just restart the PC or log out & back in of my account because these issues will just crop up.

I was entering my password. It is just numbers and I tried it with caps lock on and off. It was the correct password. I tried multiple times.
I had to reset my computer.
Is that normal? Could I have a virus? My computer has been acting 'weird' but not like it has a virus. I have used malwarebytes and avg. Both do not find anything.

I have a problem where roughly 25% of the time I insert or remove a thumb drive, my cellphone, or an external hd, windows explorer restarts. This is mostly a problem for me because certain programs in my tray are not restored and I have no way to access them after that even though they are still running. Could you help me figure out why this is happening or how to access a program if it's tray icon disappears?I've got an HP Pavillion Elite HPE and I've noticed this occurring with all of my front facing USB Ports.

When I access a certain folder in my hard disk, after 2-5 seconds I get a dialog box saying "windows explorer has stopped working" and I get two options "check online" and "restart windows explorer" then I copied that folder to another destination and I could access it but the following days the new destination also started giving the same problem. I used tools like "scan disk" and "defragmentation" but nothing worked. I use Windows 7 64 bit unlimited.

I am currently experiencing consistent restarting (every few seconds) of Windows Explorer on my PC. And this has caused the desktop to be unavailable/inaccessible. I'm desperate . To find out the error which is causing this, I need to access task manager (event viewer), which is also unavailable (greyed out when I right click on the task bar). By accessing the task manager, I hoped to stop the windows explorer process so that I can at least access to my school project. I cannot afford to reload the OS (Windows 7 Pro) as this will affect my school project.

hat am I doing wrong? The code stops after explorer.exe is restarted. I know this because the command prompt does not show the echo "-explorer restarted". When I look at the command prompt, the cursor seems to be on the next line, but without the normal C:UsersJohnSmith> in front of it (there is nothing in front of the cursor).
Also, if I include the command "exit" at the end of my .bat file, it doesn't seem to work. Even though if I type in exit into command prompt, the window closes.

restarting explorer.exe if taskbar icons vanish. But a big issue left me shunning to restart explorer.exe. I didn't know how it started but everything I restart windows explorer some of the icons disapeer, not all but some significant ones like Deskspace which is manageble only to right-click on the tskbar icon, and Ditto, a software that saves your Ctrl-C data for later which the pop-up selector is located on the taskbar icon, all the others are find but this all happens when I restart windows explorer. It's really annoying to log off and log back on just to config or use some of my most useful programs.

When I'm downloading something to my secondary HDD the internet explorer default download manager is first storing the file on my SSD-disk in the user temp folder, and after the download is finished it copy the content to my secondary hdd and deletes all data in the temp folder. How can I prevent it doing so? I want to store the file directly where I put the file.I have to download maybe 1TB of data and I don't want my SSD disk to store and delete that amount of data

My PC is windows 7 ultimate 32bit OS! Few days ago I connected my pc with few friends pc to play a game via lan! After that day whenever I start my pc the start screen (desktop) does not show and directly my documents folder opens. When I close the folder a blank screen appears. Then I go to task manager n new task n then type explorer.exe, then it works normally !!!
This has happened every time I restart the pc. I downloaded MSE and removed the viruses that had corrupted the explorer file. Then I went to run n used the sfc / scannow command.... but nothing works and same old error i.e., no startup screen! How do I get the explorer.exe to execute on its own without always going to task manager! There is no other error in the pc other than that!

When I open a folder (eg windows explorer), it will open then restart explorer.exe (ie it will close the window, the start menu disappears and then windows flashes up as if it has just logged on). Sometimes restarting sorts the issue but the problem remains.

System Info Utility version 1.0.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate , 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9900 @ 3.06GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 16371 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 476837 MB, Free - 177560 MB; E: Total - 476936 MB, Free - 28762 MB; F: Total - 1907725 MB, Free - 68972 MB;
Motherboard: Dell Inc., 076V94,
Antivirus: Symantec Endpoint Protection, Updated and Enabled
Now to the actual problem. The reason I bought all this RAM was so that the computer would run faster and more smoothly. Despite the large amount of memory, however, I still experience frequent spikes in CPU Usage, which I have learned is not related to RAM very much if at all. Regardless, I would still assume that my system wouldn't have to overexert itself to run simple tasks like Windows Explorer (i.e., folders, desktop and taskbar) or the Task Manager itself.
Either of these tasks, as well as others such as "System," "svchost," or "File I/O Surrogate" (none of which I know much about) can spike to anywhere from 30-70% of the CPU without warning, and when it does, the total CPU Usage ends up being 100, which REALLY makes my laptop sluggish and unresponsive.
I understand that RAM does not directly impact CPU Usage, but I would also assume that, since my laptop isn't ancient, that its CPU shouldn't struggle to display my folders/desktop/taskbar, or to run the Task Manager itself. I also run a daily virus check with Symantec Anti-Virus, so I don't think infection is the issue. In addition to that, I monitor memory usage alongside CPU usage, and the memory usage never goes higher than 10.5 (it usually hovers around 6-8) or so GB of my available 16-- insufficient RAM is also probably not the problem.

I read through a few threads with similar topics but the issues were either not quite the same and/or resolved comparatively easily. I am trying to repair a 1.5 year-old HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. This machine is used as the main office computer in a small doctor's office. In spite of my warnings, anti-virus software was not installed until it was too lateThere was a major issue about seven months ago that required another company to repairThe problem is explorer.exe will not run. Double-clicking a shortcut on the desktop, clicking the text name of a program from the Start menu, and even in the cmd results in the same response, a dialog box pops up stating windows explorer has stopped working.
windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs.

At the beggining of the installation, after selecting install windows instead of repair, i waited for some thigs to be checked (like installing services, expandind files ..) before the final check, which was "completing installation" my pc restarted. After the restart, i waited the final point to be checked, i waited for about 20 minutes, and i thought that the pc tilt, so i restarted it. After i started it I get this message "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation." I did this many times and get the same result.

I was playing a game when suddenly the screen froze. The system was completely unresponsive. The lights on the keyboard wouldn't even change when pressing Num Lock, Caps Lock or Scroll Lock. When rebooting, the system would not go into Windows. It would just make it past the "Starting Windows" screen and then freeze up again. I ran System Repair and let it do its thing. It took about 5 minutes then came back and gave me a general error message, saying it couldn't fix the problem. However, Windows did start correctly after System Repair was run. The problem occured a few more times. Mostly when playing games but also once whilst I was browsing the internet (music was playing also).

Left my computer running Win 7 home premium on overnight, had just installed a fresh copy of windows. I saw a message saying the system was restarted because of windows updates. Now, none of my USB 2.0 ports work, neither the rear ports nor usb mobo headers work. The two usb 3.0 ports do work however. Those 2.0 ports were working fine previously. Never seen update do this before.

Well I will get right to it. Its a desktop I built about 4 mths ago. I was goofing off all day, ran perfect. I got my package from Tiger.com, yay new memory. I also bought a drawing tablet that came w/ photoshop ele 8 and artrage. I promptly shut down my system, installed the new stick of matching memory, Corsair DDR3 4g 1600mhz, in slot two and four, with the old stick. I was only running one stick due to an order error. I reboot. The system recognizes it, runs fine. I install photoshop ele 8 and art rage along with an update to java. So far no problems. I turn the system off to plug in the drawing tablet per the instructions it came with. When it goes to reboot, i get to the windows loading screen, the animation just starts to load when i get a flash BSOD then the moniter shuts off to no signal and the computer just sits there fans and all running. I am using Win 7 home premium 64. I can get into BIOS. I have run the launch repair. I have tried putting the memory back to the previous configuration. I have run the memory diagnostic tool. I have tried system restore but no points to restore. I have tried to repair install with Windows disc, says disc is incompatible with current version, its the same disc i used to install windows the first time. I have tried to reinstall windows twice, still does it. I have attempted to make a repair disc, didnt work. If you can tell me how to get dump files from this state i would be happy to do so. If it helps at all i am using an SSD as my main hard disk, i have a second drive but there is nothing on it atm. I am just at a loss, i know a good bit about computers but not far enough, lol. My desktop is my baby and i really wanna get it up and running again.
