Multiple Explorer.exe Listed In Task Manager
Nov 30, 2009Looked in the task manager today and noticed 4 separate entries for explorer.exe / windows explorer. Is this normal? Or does it indicate a problem? Windows 7 32 bit system.

And by the way did you notice IE8 behaves differently in that respect when installed on WindowsXP as opposed to Windows 7?
WindowsXP copies of iexplore can use up to 50,000K and every copy uses quite a bit of memory.
Windows 7 copies of iexplore only use about 5-15K.
While using IE8 in WindowsXP I thought I had a malware program running by it using so much memory and exhausted myself trying to run all kinds of scans to root out the offending program only to realize it was IE8 itself. When I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7, the behavior stopped.
Just something interesting that might save others the frantic search to root out adware. I suppose the bottom line is DO NOT USE IE8 on WinXP.
Explorer Use 100% In Task Manager?
Feb 19, 2012Out of nothing my CPU run at 100% and explorer was using 98%. I had to end task my explorer each time i try to delete files from desktop or when i refresh my desktop. I tried few ways including clean reboot (only system files running), clear temp data using ccleaner, scan using online scanner and vundofix (both didn't found any virus/trojan). How To Get Explorer File To Execute On Its Own Without Task Manager
Dec 9, 2012My PC is windows 7 ultimate 32bit OS! Few days ago I connected my pc with few friends pc to play a game via lan! After that day whenever I start my pc the start screen (desktop) does not show and directly my documents folder opens. When I close the folder a blank screen appears. Then I go to task manager n new task n then type explorer.exe, then it works normally !!!
This has happened every time I restart the pc. I downloaded MSE and removed the viruses that had corrupted the explorer file. Then I went to run n used the sfc / scannow command.... but nothing works and same old error i.e., no startup screen! How do I get the explorer.exe to execute on its own without always going to task manager! There is no other error in the pc other than that!
Windows Explorer Keeps Restarting, Task Manager Unavailable
Jan 16, 2012I am currently experiencing consistent restarting (every few seconds) of Windows Explorer on my PC. And this has caused the desktop to be unavailable/inaccessible. I'm desperate . To find out the error which is causing this, I need to access task manager (event viewer), which is also unavailable (greyed out when I right click on the task bar). By accessing the task manager, I hoped to stop the windows explorer process so that I can at least access to my school project. I cannot afford to reload the OS (Windows 7 Pro) as this will affect my school project.

Now to the actual problem. The reason I bought all this RAM was so that the computer would run faster and more smoothly. Despite the large amount of memory, however, I still experience frequent spikes in CPU Usage, which I have learned is not related to RAM very much if at all. Regardless, I would still assume that my system wouldn't have to overexert itself to run simple tasks like Windows Explorer (i.e., folders, desktop and taskbar) or the Task Manager itself.
Either of these tasks, as well as others such as "System," "svchost," or "File I/O Surrogate" (none of which I know much about) can spike to anywhere from 30-70% of the CPU without warning, and when it does, the total CPU Usage ends up being 100, which REALLY makes my laptop sluggish and unresponsive.
I understand that RAM does not directly impact CPU Usage, but I would also assume that, since my laptop isn't ancient, that its CPU shouldn't struggle to display my folders/desktop/taskbar, or to run the Task Manager itself. I also run a daily virus check with Symantec Anti-Virus, so I don't think infection is the issue. In addition to that, I monitor memory usage alongside CPU usage, and the memory usage never goes higher than 10.5 (it usually hovers around 6-8) or so GB of my available 16-- insufficient RAM is also probably not the problem.
Game Runs From Task Manager With New Task Not From Shortcut Or Exe?
Sep 24, 2012I have installed this game, Singularity. The game worked fine for a week then suddenly It would crash as soon as it was opened from the desktop shortcut. The game is patched to it's latest version, I have direct x all other runtimes and PhysX installed from the CD. The shortcut it set to run as Admin in compatibility. No matter if i try with the desktop shortcut or from the exe in the folder or from the shortcut in the start menu the game will crash asap. The only way this game runs is by pulling up task manager and selecting New Task then browsing to the games exe. Malwarebytes reports no viruses or any malware. Tried reinstalling, and it didn't help.

Jan 6, 2013Whenever I load up windows 7 with bootcamp, my cpu jumps to 100 % usage almost as soon as I log in. I can not figure out what is taking up my cpu power. When I open up task manager, there are no processes running anywhere near 100%. Also, when task manager is open, the cpu goes back to normal at around 2-3% cpu usage. CPU At 100% Task Manager Shows Nothing
Jul 5, 2012For the last few days I've been running some CPU intensive programs which I wrote. My laptop was getting really hot (70+�C), so I decided to blow into the vent to clear the dust out. However all this did was clog the fan with dust and it stopped spinning, so I used a safety pin to hook the dust out. The fan started spinning and it blew a load of old dust out, and my laptop is now running in the low 40's.
However now task manager shows the CPU usage as 100%, but when I sort the processes by CPU time, nothing is using much of the processor, firefox sometimes jumps up to 50%, but it doesn't stay there for long.Even when I boot into ubuntu, everything is still running really slowly.Also, speedfan reports my CPU speed as 600mhz, sometimes it shows a few other values (1400, 1200, 1800 etc), I have two core2 duo 1.83 ghz processors, so I wasn't expecting to see 600mhz!

I have 64 bit Win7 and i need to set my affinity to CPU 0 & 1 for a certain game that doesnt run well on my i7 860. I contacted them and they told me this is what I need to do.
