IE8 Multiple Iexplore.exe Running In Task Manager
Apr 14, 2009
Anyone noticed that IE8 runs multiple iexplore.exe in Task Manager?
And by the way did you notice IE8 behaves differently in that respect when installed on WindowsXP as opposed to Windows 7?
WindowsXP copies of iexplore can use up to 50,000K and every copy uses quite a bit of memory.
Windows 7 copies of iexplore only use about 5-15K.
While using IE8 in WindowsXP I thought I had a malware program running by it using so much memory and exhausted myself trying to run all kinds of scans to root out the offending program only to realize it was IE8 itself. When I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7, the behavior stopped.
Just something interesting that might save others the frantic search to root out adware. I suppose the bottom line is DO NOT USE IE8 on WinXP.

When looking in taskmgr, I find 14 instances of Internet Explorer running, each using around 21MB of RAM. why there are so many? If I close out of IE completely, they are still there...

Fo the last few days, Internet explorer stops working all of the time. When this happens, no desktop icons work. Sometimes, I can use task manager to shut down instances of iexplore.exe*32 and it works again for a while. Sometimes, I am not allowed to close the instances with task manager as it says operationdenied.Malwarebytes returns 0 issues. I tried MS safety scanner and that also found nothing.I assume there is a virus or trojan at work here but I really don't know what else to do

Looked in the task manager today and noticed 4 separate entries for explorer.exe / windows explorer. Is this normal? Or does it indicate a problem? Windows 7 32 bit system.

Alright well the other day i switched from using Avast to MSE. After the switch it seems that my memory, and my cpu is being used a lot. Even when i am not running anything besides the AV, and Windows Task Manager, and the little processes.I have scanned my computer for viruses, malware, spyware, and even did a disk defrag. I also closed any processes that i know are not required.

I use windows 7 ultimate x86 edition. I can not run task manager.Whenever i try to run this....it shows taskmgr.exe is not a valid win32 application. I use kaspersky 2012 antivirus. It does not detect any virus that might cause the problem. I have tried to run task manager from command prompt or system32 directory as administrator, but it shows the same error. How can i solve this?

I have written a batch file to run every afternoon, using Task Manager. When I was running WIndows XP, the Task Manager (or it may have been the batch file itself) opened a new DOS window whilst it was running so that I could see everything was working correctly. Under Windows 7, the same batch file will only run in a new window if I run it myself - if it runs in Task Manager it will only run in the background. How can I get it to oipen a DOS window whilst running through Task Manager, please?

I moved my Thunderbird and Firefox profile folders from their original locations in Roaming... to a C: ... location because their backups were in Compatibility Files. When I went to start either one, I got a close program message. It stated that FF (or when starting TB), they were already running and had to be closed. I then ran Process Explorer and Windows Task Manager. neither of whih showed any indication that these programs were running. I then return the profiles to their original locations, and FF and TB returned to normal.

Windows 7 Premium 64 bit's Task Manager used to show a bar with pplications/Processes etc., with lists below making it possible to "end-now" some apps and stop some processes at least for a while to save on CPU/Memory usage. There was also provision by a menu bar at the top of Task Manager window to shut down pc etc., from within the task manager.Presently my Windows 7 Premium 64 bit's Task Manager shows only what looks like a list of processes (Not Applications) topped by a head-bar having Name/PID/Description/Status/Group and a selectable button at the bottom right for Services.(I could have uploaded ascreen if this Ask Your Question Form had provided for attachments!).I suspect this change in Task Manager came after some new installs - Windows Updates etc.

I have Windows 7, Premium Home Edition. When I typed Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I used to get the Task Manager. Tabs allowed me to select some options, one of which was "processes". Maybe I clicked something that changed things, but now I only get a list of running programs (NOT processes). And I don't have any tabs to select other options,How can I get the running processes list back?

On a fresh boot, after my desktop loads but before I launch any browsing/email/internet applications, I notice I have two or three instances of iexplore.exe running in the list of active processes. Does this seem "normal" for Windows 7, or should I be concerned that iexplore.exe is running even when I have not launched IE?
(Windows 7 x64). Browser is IE8, but Firefox & Chrome are also installed.

I have installed this game, Singularity. The game worked fine for a week then suddenly It would crash as soon as it was opened from the desktop shortcut. The game is patched to it's latest version, I have direct x all other runtimes and PhysX installed from the CD. The shortcut it set to run as Admin in compatibility. No matter if i try with the desktop shortcut or from the exe in the folder or from the shortcut in the start menu the game will crash asap. The only way this game runs is by pulling up task manager and selecting New Task then browsing to the games exe. Malwarebytes reports no viruses or any malware. Tried reinstalling, and it didn't help.

Whenever I load up windows 7 with bootcamp, my cpu jumps to 100 % usage almost as soon as I log in. I can not figure out what is taking up my cpu power. When I open up task manager, there are no processes running anywhere near 100%. Also, when task manager is open, the cpu goes back to normal at around 2-3% cpu usage. WIthout task manager, the cpu gets hot fast and the fans start in full speed! Its insane! I play a lot of video games on my computer, and when I dont have task manager open, there is insane amounts of framerate lag. Games, such as Warcraft 3, are lagging my computer when they are set on low

For the last few days I've been running some CPU intensive programs which I wrote. My laptop was getting really hot (70+C), so I decided to blow into the vent to clear the dust out. However all this did was clog the fan with dust and it stopped spinning, so I used a safety pin to hook the dust out. The fan started spinning and it blew a load of old dust out, and my laptop is now running in the low 40's.
However now task manager shows the CPU usage as 100%, but when I sort the processes by CPU time, nothing is using much of the processor, firefox sometimes jumps up to 50%, but it doesn't stay there for long.Even when I boot into ubuntu, everything is still running really slowly. Also, speedfan reports my CPU speed as 600mhz, sometimes it shows a few other values (1400, 1200, 1800 etc), I have two core2 duo 1.83 ghz processors, so I wasn't expecting to see 600mhz!

Everyone I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and I have a problem with the task manager. The problem is when I try to start task manager it loads for like half a second and doesn't do anything. If I do ctrl+alt+esc it just selects an open program. I've even scanned for malware but I have noticed something weird when I go to regedit under Policies then System there is only (Default) and WallpaperStyle. I think a virus may have disable my account as administrator.

I've just noticed in the past two days that my Task Manager only comes up showing the Process screen. It does not have any controls for looking at applications or performance. I must turn it off with the taskbar window, close window. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and cure? I have used Glary Uitilities and CCleaner on the machine.

sorry if this has already been asked but i couldnt find a proper answer for me. I have 64 bit Win7 and i need to set my affinity to CPU 0 & 1 for a certain game that doesnt run well on my i7 860. I contacted them and they told me this is what I need to do. I do know how to USUALLY do this (task manager, go to process, show all processes, right click, set affinity...) but for some reason I cannot get the set affinity option to show up for the life of me.. also I am the administrator and I only have one account on this computer.

My windows 7 dell laptop hung on an application, no responsive desktop, no hitting start menu - nothing. I went to task manager and found NO Shutdown Option tab - I'm use to xp which had options under Shutdown, like restart, etc. So how do you shut down windows safely? I had to hold the power button until it turned off. On restart of course I got the dos window "windows did not shut down properly. Do you want to start in safe mode, or hit enter for the highlighted start windows normally
