I used Windows backup and restore to backup my files, and I let Windows choose which files to back up. Then my boyfriend dropped a heavy speaker on my computer and destroyed my internal hard drive, and when I restored my files from my external hard drive to a new computer, my most recent pst file was missing. There were a couple of old ones backed up, but not the most recent one, and I lost about three years' worth of e-mails.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been scouring the internet trying to fix a boot issue with my Dell XPS 420. It worked fine last week but on Saturday started to blue screen. I installed a new HD and installed a fresh copy of Win7 64-bit. I reinstalled my ATI video drivers but nothing else (e.g. I had to update a load of codecs for Win7 on the other install). I tried booting again from the original hard drive and everything came back with no errors. I left the PC up overnight, and now I get the same blue screen with various errors. So I disconnected from that hard drive and tried to boot from the fresh install, now it blue screens there as well. So I hit F8 and tried to boot in Safemode with Networking. Hangs at the casspnp.sys file. Then tried to boot from the DVD and repair but the repair only gets so far and yet another blue screen.I have 8gb of RAM onboard, and I have an ATI 2400 video card installed that is jacked into a Panasonic plasma display. Other than that, I've not customized anything else. I've ruled out the RAM as I swapped it out. Could be the DVD as it was having what appeared to be I/O issues. However, it seems to work fine with I press F12 and boot from the DVD. I have this PC connected to a Port Authority KVM. I've reset the KVM as well. I also have a USB hub in the mix as well. I reseated my RAM, the DVD cables.

I try not to lift the partition. then I use File Recovery again ... I just found a Folder is missing the rest are listed! LOST & FOUND! with millions of folders and each folder in it only consists of 2 3 or 1 files uncovered.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI went to Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program and changed the association to file .BAT to explore.exe.Now, when I click on a bat file with the mouse, the whole desktop starts shaking. I think it goes into a loop.The problem, when I go back to Controlpanel-> Default programs->Associate a file type with a program.The extension .BAT is no longer there! It is gone.And when I examine the file property of some .bat file, there is no option to change what to open it with. There is no open with... only OPEN option.There is also no way to add a new file extension in Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type. I can't add .bat again.I did Control panel->Default programs->Set progream access and computer defaults but still the .bat file association is broken, and when I double click on it, same thing happens.Now when I right click on a .BAT file from exploer, I also do not see the EDIT option any more.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi needed to pawn my laptop for a short time and didnt want my files to be viewed by anyone while it was not in my possesion, so what i did i changed the file permissions of my c: drive so that only admin had fulll control and no one else. well now i cant access my c: drive with my admin accrt. nor will it let me change the file permissions either. also a hand full of other things will not work such as the internet explorer icon on the task bar or start menu but i can open i.e. from the recently viewd submenu from the i.e. icon on the start menu. also i can open files on my c: drive from any old shortcut icons i had left on my desktop but i cant acces them directly from explorer. so i found some work arounds but really need to get full control of my h/d.

I have spent the last couple of hours going through each GPO setting to disable as many features for my kids account on Windows 7 ultimate. I saved the file as kids.msc. The only issue is that I want to be able to clear these settings when needed, so that i can fully access the features. I could not find any options in GPO that allows you to reset the settings back to default...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI seem to be getting this message and the prompt to boot into safe mode everytime I startup or reboot. Everything seems to be shutting down normally. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that it seems to be loading an old system restore point whenever it does this. I don't know for sure if these 2 issues are connected. I first started getting the "Windows didn't shutdown properly" prompt after I had to do a reset of my computer during a total lock. I can't say for sure if the system restore point issue began when I first saw this as I don't shutdown my computer very often.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I finished my first computer build. The process went smoothly until I installed Windows 7 and began to receive repeated blue screens. The BSODs have occurred in various situations such as: while attempting to update drivers, while installing Microsoft Security Essentials and during restarts. The problem is inconsistent and has caused various blue screen error codes that I cannot pinpoint (0x24, 0x3b, 0x34, 0x7e, 0x0a, 0xd1, 0x19). Within the last three days, my computer has blue screened 15 times .
As of now my drivers are up to date. I've also run chkdsk and memtest86+, but have yet to discover an error (in memtest86+ I tested my two RAM sticks individually and let it run for more than one pass).

My work laptop was being changed from a Dell to a Lenovo and I was using Windows Backup & Restore to backup my important documents and emails. I took a final backup to my external hard drive before handing my old laptop to IT. Once I restored all my files I noticed the following:
1. Some files were not the latest versions, i.e. they were a month old.
2. Some subfolders simply weren't there. I had two subfolder in one of my folders and only one was restored and not the other. I made sure that I restored from the latest backup file.
I want to tweak my OS down to the core gpedit.msc makes it really simple and everything is there.

I have a situation where Word 2010 does not default back to the previous file location. i.e., I open a file from a particular folder. When I click File, Open, it does not default to that folder location so I can open another file from that location. I have to rebrowse to the folder location.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled Windows Live Essentials 2011 through Programs and Features. It left several folders in the Registry and Windows Live Mail on the HD. Although I own and granted permission for the Live Mail folders, these "trusted installer" files will not delete. After uninstalling programs in past OS, I have always gone into the Registry and manually cleaned out remaining files that were not uninstalled. I would like to do the same for the remains of Windows Live Essentials in the Registry, but because it has "Windows" in the name, I am reluctant to remove from the Registry...... I am not sure if it is linked to anything else. I have CCleaner, but apprehensive about using in the Registry.Can some wise person let me know if I manually remove Windows Live Essentials and its family folders from the Registry the sky will not fall down (that said, I don't know if the trusted installer folders on the HD and in the Registry will allow removal)

When he starts the computer, he gets the following error: "Windows Error Recovery." Searching around online led us to create a system repair disk on my laptop (which also runs Windows 7). When we boot with the disk in the drive, a prompt asking for our language (which is greyed out so we can't change it) and our keyboard (which we can change) appears. Without changing the keyboard option, we press 'next' and then it freezes. We've also tried the 'repair your computer' option in the Advanced Boot Options, but it also freezes.

Some of them are coloured, some are grey but they appear on all programmes, including a Word blank page and the desktop page. Some of them flash, some of them change shape, ut they are all pixel shaped within the boxes. There are also some strange 'squiggly' marks on the screen. When I opened Windows mail, the left hand side of the screen was completely black and it didn't show any of my messages.
