Windows Didn't Shutdown Properly
Jan 16, 2013
I seem to be getting this message and the prompt to boot into safe mode everytime I startup or reboot. Everything seems to be shutting down normally. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that it seems to be loading an old system restore point whenever it does this. I don't know for sure if these 2 issues are connected. I first started getting the "Windows didn't shutdown properly" prompt after I had to do a reset of my computer during a total lock. I can't say for sure if the system restore point issue began when I first saw this as I don't shutdown my computer very often.

A few days ago I finished my first computer build. The process went smoothly until I installed Windows 7 and began to receive repeated blue screens. The BSODs have occurred in various situations such as: while attempting to update drivers, while installing Microsoft Security Essentials and during restarts. The problem is inconsistent and has caused various blue screen error codes that I cannot pinpoint (0x24, 0x3b, 0x34, 0x7e, 0x0a, 0xd1, 0x19). Within the last three days, my computer has blue screened 15 times .
As of now my drivers are up to date. I've also run chkdsk and memtest86+, but have yet to discover an error (in memtest86+ I tested my two RAM sticks individually and let it run for more than one pass).
My parts list consists of...
CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz
GPU: SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870
Mobo: ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3
RAM: G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
PSU: SILVERSTONE ST50F-ES 500W
HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB
ODD: ASUS 24X DVD Burner
I've also attached the two latest minidumps. Hopefully, I've provided enough information to help solve this issue. I want to use my new computer!

Anyway, anytime my Sony Vaio computer isn't shut down properly, or the screen times out due to inactivity, it will show a screen that says "windows is loading files" and then proceeds to do a start up repair in which it will try to restore my device to a previous setting (or something like that). When i first got this computer, as with my previous HP, I could close the lid..no harm no foul. After having this one for a month it started doing this out of nowhere.

recently, i've noticed that whenever i sleep my computer, attempting to shut it down later does not work. the process just hangs at the Windows 7 screen with the Shutting down...message. i've let it run for 30 minutes one time and nothing happened, still Shutting down... every time this has happened, i end up manually powering off. the computer shows no ill effects on start up (other than the 'your computer shut down improperly' message). i can't find any unusual events in event viewer, either. it shuts down fine when not having used sleep mode. to sum it up: when i power on my computer normally and DO NOT use sleep mode at all between a shut down, everything is fine. when i power on my computer normally and DO use sleep mode at some point between the shutdown, the computer will typically HANG at the shut down screen and not actually shut down. however, what makes this tough to trouble shoot is that sleeping it for 5 or 10 minutes will have no effect on shutting down...but sleeping it overnight (7-8 hours) will. this problem has been occurring for about 3 months now, though i only started noticing the trend recently. i typically shut my computer off during the week and sleep it through Friday and Saturday and then shut it down again on Sunday (now, i shut it down all the time of course). the computer is virus and malware free according to MSE and Mbam. the only thing i can think of that i installed in between now and 2 months ago were various Steam games and graphics drivers updates. my HDD has never given me any trouble, memory is fine, CPU isn't overheating, etc, etc. my specs are Windows 7 (legit copy before anyone asks), 8gb RAM, 2500k, AMD 6950, Samsung Spinpoint 1TB (regular HDD, no SSD).

I have been experiencing shutdown issues for the past 4-5 days now. I click the shutdown option under the start menu, and the screen goes black and the power button is still illuminated. The light had usually gone off, indicating the computer is powered off, but now it's non responsive and I have to hold the power button down to shutdown. Upon further research, I saw a bugcheck on the 20th of Sept 2012, about 4-5 days ago. Has to be related. Furthermore, when the computer goes into hibernate, it becomes non responsive as well, just like the shutdown issue. Of course here is the requested info per the sticky.

Trying to install a ssd in my g73jh. Inserted the 3 recovery disk one at a time and after 37 minutes the message said the recovery was a success and then the next screen came up said insert media disk just like it did when I first started. Does this mean that windows 7 didn't recognize the ssd and if that's the case what is the next step.

I used Windows backup and restore to backup my files, and I let Windows choose which files to back up. Then my boyfriend dropped a heavy speaker on my computer and destroyed my internal hard drive, and when I restored my files from my external hard drive to a new computer, my most recent pst file was missing. There were a couple of old ones backed up, but not the most recent one, and I lost about three years' worth of e-mails.

My work laptop was being changed from a Dell to a Lenovo and I was using Windows Backup & Restore to backup my important documents and emails. I took a final backup to my external hard drive before handing my old laptop to IT. Once I restored all my files I noticed the following:
1. Some files were not the latest versions, i.e. they were a month old.
2. Some subfolders simply weren't there. I had two subfolder in one of my folders and only one was restored and not the other. I made sure that I restored from the latest backup file.

I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials 2011 through Programs and Features. It left several folders in the Registry and Windows Live Mail on the HD. Although I own and granted permission for the Live Mail folders, these "trusted installer" files will not delete. After uninstalling programs in past OS, I have always gone into the Registry and manually cleaned out remaining files that were not uninstalled. I would like to do the same for the remains of Windows Live Essentials in the Registry, but because it has "Windows" in the name, I am reluctant to remove from the Registry...... I am not sure if it is linked to anything else. I have CCleaner, but apprehensive about using in the Registry. Can some wise person let me know if I manually remove Windows Live Essentials and its family folders from the Registry the sky will not fall down (that said, I don't know if the trusted installer folders on the HD and in the Registry will allow removal)

Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

I'm writing about my brother's Samsung R780 laptop (running Windows 7 64 bit), which recently stopped working. When he starts the computer, he gets the following error: "Windows Error Recovery." Searching around online led us to create a system repair disk on my laptop (which also runs Windows 7). When we boot with the disk in the drive, a prompt asking for our language (which is greyed out so we can't change it) and our keyboard (which we can change) appears. Without changing the keyboard option, we press 'next' and then it freezes. We've also tried the 'repair your computer' option in the Advanced Boot Options, but it also freezes.

When I turn on the screen of my PC I get weird shapes all over the screen. Some of them are coloured, some are grey but they appear on all programmes, including a Word blank page and the desktop page. Some of them flash, some of them change shape, ut they are all pixel shaped within the boxes. There are also some strange 'squiggly' marks on the screen. When I opened Windows mail, the left hand side of the screen was completely black and it didn't show any of my messages. As I'm typing this message, I've got grey boxes which change shape as I type and it's covering some of the text.

how can I get the shortcut back? My desktop background didn't want to change (it went to black, and stayed black no matter what), so I decided to do a System Restore. I went to the start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools. No system restore. Missing.I did manage to do the good ol' F8 trick while starting Windows to use the system restore; backed up to my programs from yesterday. My desktop background decided to start working again, so one less loose end.I don't fancy going through my system32 folder just to restore, so can someone tell me how to get rstrui.exe back in my system tools folder as a shortcut?

I moved my Thunderbird and Firefox profile folders from their original locations in Roaming... to a C: ... location because their backups were in Compatibility Files. When I went to start either one, I got a close program message. It stated that FF (or when starting TB), they were already running and had to be closed. I then ran Process Explorer and Windows Task Manager. neither of whih showed any indication that these programs were running. I then return the profiles to their original locations, and FF and TB returned to normal.

I read somewhere on the forum that to save all your Outlook 2007 emails, you have to save the "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.pst" file.
I have saved this file as well as the whole folder, but after installing Windows 7, I tried to put all the files in the same spot, yet Outlook creates its own "Outlook1.pst" file and ignores the one I put in. I tried to import as well with no luck. I only had about 10 emails but they were job related and pretty important. Can someone please help?
