I have a new HP desktop running Windows7. I have an external hard drive that i was using with Windows XP. The external hard drive is a Western Digital. My new computer recognizes the drive but can not read it. Is there a simple solution. Tech support from Western Digital tells me I have to format the drive. I dont want to lose my files.

My 1 TB Toshiba external hard drive cannot be read by Windows. a error messgae appears sayng CD Rive E is either corupted or the disc is in an incompatible format.

Then tried plugging this drive using a USB connector into my desktop PC to see if I could run some chkdsk. Then my desktop PC displayed messages telling me my firewall and virus software had been turned off and the computer crashed. ROOTKIT? So I was left with 2 drives not working. I re installed windows on desktop but using ISO on flash drive BUT can't on the 500GB Hitachi HTS545050B9SA00 for some reason. Windows setup loaded and Deleted old partitions and formatted. When I tried to install, it froze. It now just boots up with a windows loading screen and I'm also unable to boot from flash drive as it freezes. This is on a Sony Vaio VPCEB4E4E.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIve had this problem once before. I turned my PC on Yesterday, and my WD 500GB Hard drive (Number 3) was not recognised. Then I did a reboot, and the drive showed up again, HOWEVER, The drive has the Read Only flag in DiskPart and using the attrib disk clear readonly commands with the correct disk selected does not work. DiskPart just moans that It cant clear the attribute.
I doubt its a Driver Issue or a Hardware issue as It was working fine. All the tests in Ubuntu 10.04 (my second os) come up good and I can write to it, So Windows 7 has done something, Not sure what.
So i build a newcomputer yesterday. I decided to use my old SATA hard drive from my computer, it has my OS, and other files on it. I get everything put in, but when i start the computer it says "no hard disk is detected".
I enter the bios menu, and i notice it recognizes that it is in there, as well as my disk drive.
How come it wont let me load my hard drive, and it doesnt detect it when i start it up.. but BIOS sees that its there?

View 1 Replies View RelatedComputer is a Sony Vaio VGC-RC110G (not sure about motherboard). About 3 weeks ago computer starts refusing to boot giving errors that make me think the hard drive is bad. Computer will still occasionally boot after 5-10 tries. I bought a new hard drive and tried to create an image of the old drive onto the new using Clonezilla, the process gave a few errors. The computer flatly refused to boot from the new drive (gave disk read errors). However, when I could boot using the old drive, I could get in and explore the image of the new drive and the image copy process seemed to have worked okay.
As part of the disk image copy process, my new drive had 2 partitions and about 900 megs of free space. The two partitions were the main windows partition from the old drive and the recovery partition. I combined all partitions and formatted the new drive (using Gparted) because I thought that the disk image copy probably just recreated errors in the old drive onto the new. After the format, my computer then consistently refused to boot from either drive. (in the past I could boot to the old drive after a couple of tries). The error was usually "a disk read error occurred' or "BOOTMGR is missing."
Attempts to install windows using windows install DVD failed because computer couldn't write to the new hard drive. Both hard drives would usually appear in bios when I entered into it (I know at least one time where neither appeared in the bios), although sometimes computer would fail allow me to edit bios altogether. I attached the new hard drive to a different computer and installed a clean version of windows 7 Ultimate x86 to the new drive. The different computer boots just fine from the new hard drive. But when I move the new hard drive to back to the old computer I consistently now get "a disk read error occurred" error.
I don't believe it is a SATA cable issue because power to drive seems to be fine and I had to use the SATA cable from the old computer when hooking the drive up to the different and it worked fine. Also, Gparted recognizes the drive just fine and has no problems formatting partitions etc., so there is communication happening through the SATA cable and the power cable is powering adequately.TL;DR summary: New hard drive works fine with new computer, but old computer (when connected to same new hard drive) gives me a "disk read error occurred." Based on the evidence, I don't think it's a faulty drive issue. I'm also skeptical that it's a cable issue, but haven't 100% ruled out this possibility. What should I do next in terms of identifying the problem? I've currently exhausted my (admittedly limited) hardware troubleshooting .expertise.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

there was no upper-filter or lower filters to delete, i have also had a look in properties and it says the dvd drive is working fine,iv tried to uninstall it and restart still have the same problem?

Now from upgarding to XP to 7 I had no issues until now... When inserting Disc (Blank or Data Files) the DVD Drive will hang and not ask what to do with the Disk and when I try to Burn the disc it will say cannot write to drive or just sit there doing nothing
Both these drives worked flawlessly with XP and only way to get the drive to recognise half the time with Windows 7 is to restart PC to either get it to show in Device Manager or press eject when booting to get the disk inside out.
Both drives are Sata and are only a few months old (not burned much and work exceeelnet on another xp machine)
I have a 1.5TB Seagate ext HD that is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT), this was formatted on my iMac. The Mac internal HD has completely crashed. I attached the ext HD to my Toshiba Satellite laptop, the ext HD does not show in the drive list. It does show in the device manager. It also shows as working properly in the properties menu I need files from this drive. How do I get my Windows 7 system to read the ext usb drive?

Instead of black text, the text is like a gray color. It is so profoundly irritating I cannot stand it! It isnt like this on all websites. For instance, as I am typing this post. The text color is black and does not blend in with the white background. Although, it could have better resolution.

My cd/dvd drive cannot read the disc. You can here the drive attempting to load up the disc but to know success. I have tried Microsoft Fix, does not work (however, it has in the past as well as booting from disc at startup-that too has worked in the past), I have tried booting from the cd/dvd drive on bootup, I have attempted to go into the registry and delete lowers installers I think its called (I didnt do this on previously installation attempts and I installed fine). I have all correct drivers according to my laptop, plus I've gone into the packard bell website to download the correct drivers and I have used windows update too in case I am missing anything. It gives an error message "Windows cannot read the disk in drive E:"etc, format the disk etc.I was always able to put a blank CD in the drive and see that it was blank or could copy files to drive. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on.
