Windows 7 Install On XP Desktop
Jan 24, 2012
I have the cd's of my Acer Win 7 OS home premium. and I have XP SP3 on my old desktop i was just wondering if it were possible to install those Win 7 cd's onto my desktop and have a dual boot setup. I thought i read somewhere a while back that its not as easy as it may sound to do so. mainly of the hardware involved..cpu and etc.

i have a problem in my desktop computer. here are my system requirements
processor: intel P IV Dual Core 3GHz
motherboard: Mercury Intel chipset 945
ram: transcend 2gb ddr2
graphics card: Palit GeForce 9400GT (1024 MB DDR2)
Hard disk: Seagate 500GB SATA (brand new)
power supply: Mercury 450W (brand new)
since i had a problem with the hard disc and power supply earlier, i had them replaced..now as i tried a clean install by booting from my dvd, it completed installation of windows but after the first restart it came to a blue screen where a process of "dumping physical memory to disc " reached 100% and the computer crashed.i left it on its own but it crashes again and again at the same blue screen...this is what the blue screen looks like
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to ur computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.(which i did 3 times). If this screen appears, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space(which i have 50GB).If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or
check with the manufacturer for driver updates(which i did not get).Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS update(which i installed).Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced stratup options, and then select safe mode.

When I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 I get the loading files white progress bar you normally get during an installation, it then goes directly to the scrolling progress bar that would normally appear before a Windows startup, and then goes to a blank Windows 7 desktop with only a cursor (that I can move).I have a computer with the following specs:[CODE]I have tried to install with every version I can get my hands on, both 32 and 64 bit. None of them are upgrade versions. I've tried installing on a fresh WD Raptor and an Intel G25 SSD. All other drives have been disconnected. I've moved my memory around and tried with one stick. My mainboard has the latest official BIOS, although there is a new beta.
I ran the Windows 7 compatibility test and didn't see anything that would cause this problem.I have searched the internet and have not been able to find a solution sonstalling Windows XP has never been a problem, just Windows 7, always with the same problem. This is one of the few times when I have not been able to look around a find an existing answer to a problem and I am stumped.

I have a new Dell XPS 8300 desktop still in the box with a HDD pre-installed with Windows 7. Since it was not a customization option at the time of purchase, I would like to install a new SSD to run Windows 7 and a few important programs that I will load in the future. There are currently no programs or data on the existing HDD that I need to transfer other than the OS and the drivers that I need to make the computer work. I would like to avoid messing with cloning and adjusting partitions if possible.Eventually, I would like to use the HDD as a secondary drive where I can load non-essential programs and store larger data files.Based on what I have read on numerous threads, the following is the procedure I intend to use. Please let me know if I am missing any steps or if I am doing something that will not achieve the desired result.
1) Turn on computer with the HDD installed as-is and the SSD still sitting in the box.
2) Use Dells DataSafe Local BackUp to create a System Recovery Media on either a DVD or 8+ GB USB key.
3) For a belt and suspenders backup, next I was going to use the Windows 7 feature to create a system image found at Control Panel -> System and Security -> Backup and Restore. I am very conservative and would like the option to start over if I mess anything up. I was planning on saving the system image to the existing HDD and to a either a DVD or external hard drive. I am not exactly sure how large this file is and where I should store it.
4) Restart computer and enter BIOS, and change the SATA mode to AHCI. I assume this should be done before installing the SSD. Power down computer immediately after.
5) After powering down, I was going to unplug the HDD power cable and unplug the connection of the HDD to SATA Port 0.
6) Install new SSD in a free bay and connect power and cable to SATA Port 0.
7) Restart computer with System Recovery Media (from Step 2) already in either the DVD drive or plugged into a USB port. I assume the computer will automatically boot from the System Recovery Media, but I realize I may need to enter BIOS (or some other system menu) to tell it to load and install Windows 7 from the System Recovery Media. Can anyone fill in the blank here so I know what to expect?
8) After Windows 7 has been installed, will the System Recovery Disk automatically install all of the device drivers that originally were installed on the systems HDD? I have a device drivers disk from Dell but was hoping this would be accomplished by the System Recovery Disk?
9) I am assuming after Step 8, that the computer will function and look the same way as it did at Step 1. This may be a little nave. Is there anything I am missing?
10) I was hoping that Windows 7 would do a good job of automatically adjusting the system for the SSD, so I was going to not fool with the tweaks that everyone is recommending. Are there any tweaks or setting adjustments that I have to make to allow the SSD to function properly? Optimum performance is great, but I dont want to risk standard performance by messing things up after I have come this far.
11) After verifying that everything is working properly, I was going to power down and then connect the existing HDD to power and an available SATA port.
12) Reboot the system, and magically the HDD will be listed as an E drive that I can store data files and load non-essential programs on. I actually assume it is not this easy. Do I need to uninstall Windows 7 on the HDD or delete the partition and reformat? The less the better, but I dont want to create problems with conflicting drives.

I tried to reinstall it and I had a hard time to complete the windows installation, it would mark an error in mid process. So I finally got it done, and started to have alot of blue screen and restarts on the pc.I went straight to the HDD, I have checked it too many times and they all say it's okay. So I got two theories, it's either my motherboard or the dvd drives... which kinda odd, but both should be damage.Anyway, I recently had an issue and all usb drives went death. I know the hardware works, because they are on up until windows starts running, they go death. I had issues on the usb drives, but keyboard and mouse worked, to have a usb storage I would disable and enable the usb drive and it would work. Now nothing.I been using teamviewer to control the desktop. So after all the background and long story, I been going down to reinstall windows, I last installed a 64 bits, because I recently upgrade it to 4 GBs of RAM, but don't how convinient it is. Don't know if it's okay to reinstall a 64 bits or just go back to 32 bits? I mainly use it for LAN media streaming and storing info.

I bought a second hand desktop yesterday. When I connect my DSL cable to the CPU, the system prompt: no driver found. Since this is a second hand, I don't have a cd for this pc. I'm confused. I really don't know what to do. The owner who sold me this informed me that he used this pc only with wireless connection with his usb type broadband. I don't have a wireless broadband and only using a dsl cable.

I am going to be doing a clean install on a Dell desktop. I see on the Windows sticker that it says Windows 7 Pro OA.
Does OA mean some type of OEM installation?
Will that product key work if I install Windows 7 Pro from the iso file I got from the Digital River site?

I originally only had a HDD for my computer with Windows 7 on it. I got a 180 GB Intel SSD today and installed Windows 7 on it. When I installed I made sure to unplug the data cable on the HDD. After everything was installed I plugged the HDD in and made sure it booted the SSD in the BIOS.
I went into the HDD to open Steam thinking that it would open fine. It wanted me to update everything so I went ahead and did that. Then I noticed a ton of random icons on my desktop. I realized all of these were from the Steam folder. I have no idea why they're on my desktop. When I try to delete them off my desktop it won't let me, saying Steam is using it. Is there something I have to do to make my SSD and HDD work together?
Also with Steam; after I updated it none of my games were installed. They are all installed on the HDD but when I try to click on a game it wants me to install it again. One more thing, whenever I open a program in the HDD it wants to update and install it into the SSD

When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop. But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

I've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop. In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.

I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.

I recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.
