Unable To Access Computers In Workgroup

Nov 29, 2011

I've added a new laptop to my home network (now 3 computers, all of them with win 7 ultimate 64) . I didn't use home group because i don't like it, so i configured everything manually and everything worked great, file sharing. printer sharing, everything. And then I added a password to my user on the new laptop to protect it and the sharing between the laptop and the two other computers stopped working. when i try to access the laptop from another computer it reports i have no access, and when i try to access one of the computers from the laptop it asks for a user name and password.i uninstalled firewall - didn't help. reinstalled. i removed the password - problem solved. added password again - problem returns.

Workgroup Computers

Nov 16, 2009

I have a Laptop that I just installed Windows 7 on, and an XP machine. All is working well, including the networking, but I have what might be a silly question.

From the XP machine, why does the 7 machine not show up when I "View Workgroup Computers". I can get to it when I look in "My Network Places", but when I View the Network Computers, only the XP machine shows up when I'm on the XP machine.

The XP machine shows up on the 7 machine when I "View Network Computers and Devices" FWIW.

Workgroup Computers Come And Go On Network

Nov 1, 2009

I could 'see' my shared XP machine and my MacBook from my Windows 7 computer over my wireless network last night be cannot see them now. I can 'see' the Windows 7 from the XP machine on Workgroup computers but I cannot 'see' any computers from my Windows 7 network now.

I have seen another post like this but the solution there was to buy another wireless router but I just bought a new Netgear 11n router and it is working fine for Internet access.

Windows 7 Professional And It Is Not Easily Recognizing Other Workgroup Computers Or Stay Connected

May 24, 2012

My new laptop running Windows 7 Professional and it is not easily recognizing other workgroup computers. When, and if, it does, it does not staying connected to other computers and a wireless printer on my workgroup.I have a desktop that is running Windows XP Home. It is sharing its printer and external hard drive to all computers in the workgroup. When I got on the router, I was able to get the Windows 7 machine to see XP box long enough to map a drive and load the printer. After rebooting, Windows 7 did not recognize the drive map or the printer. I pinged the XP box and got Destination Host unreachable. The only thing I can ping is the router. Also, when I went to load the wireless printer (with Windows 7 drivers) it did not see the printer even though the printers connection light is on. I have two Vista Business machines and one Windows 7 Home computers in my workgroup. These are not having any problems. From those other machines, they can ping each other but they cannot ping the new box.It is acting like a setting in Business has it isolated itself and is not allowing traffic. I have searched this problem and it seems to be common but I have not seen a post addressing the Business question. I have tried everything that the help files and forums stated (setting discovery, disabling IPv6, disabling firewall on both, uninstalling virus protection, etc.) with no result. Is there a setting in Business that would prevent it from being visible?

Cannot Access MacBook On W7 Workgroup

Dec 3, 2009

I have had a Windows workgroup for years, linking PCs and Macs as well as a Linkstation Network Drive through a Time Capsule Router/Hard Drive Combo. Immediately after upgrading from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional on my Sony Vaio VGN-Z750D, I can see the Time Capsule and MacBook but can not access the MacBook Pro. I am able to access the Linkstation and the Time Capsule. However, the system does not ask me for a username and password when I try to access the MacBook Pro, and I get an error message that Windows cannot access the MacBook. The problem seems to be on the Windows 7 end, for I am able to access the Sony on the MacBook Pro.

The workgroup name is the same on all computers. I had to reset the workgroup name on the Sony, because for some reason the Windows 7 upgrade renamed the workgroup name to WORKGROUP without asking. I reset it to the name used on all our mchines. The only variable changed is the Windows 7 upgrade.

Stream Media Over Network - Can't Access Workgroup

Sep 4, 2011

I have two pc's- one a Windows 7 the other is a xp. I have two streamers: Boxee Box and Pop Corn Hour. Through various trial/error I have determined I can't access the workgroup from both the Windows 7 and xp on either streamer. In other words, both streamers should be able to access workgroup on my network and neither can. I have tried resetting the router, both pc's, streamers etc. All files/folders set to share. I am not an expert but it seems since both streamers can't access my workgroup, the problem might be with windows.

Can See XP Computers, Can't Access Them

Oct 25, 2009

I have a home network using the KEYSOFT workgroup. There are several XP computers on this network and everything has worked great. I just got a new Windows 7 laptop. I'm using a WiFi network to connect to the other computers. I set the Win 7 computer to use the KEYSOFT workgroup, and I can actually see the other computers on the network, but when I try to access them, Win 7 makes me log onto the other computer.

This has two problems:

1. I have never before needed to log onto other computers to access them.

2. The logon window says that I must log onto the other computer in the domain LAPTOP (which is the name of the new Win 7 computer). Since I'm using a workgroup and not a domain, I can't log on successfully. The logon dialog shows no way to change either the domain name or change it to a workgroup name.

How do I access the hard drive of one of the XP computer?

PARTIALLY SOLVED -- If I ignore the erroneous domain and just put in a logon name and password for the other computer, I can get in. But is there a way on this trusted network to access the other computers without logging in?

No Access To Networked Xp Computers

May 10, 2009

I have upgraded my vista home premium to Win 7. I now cannot access the Xp computers on my home network but I can access my other Vista computers ok. I can ping all by ip and name ok. But file access just comes up with error 0x80070035 'the network path was not found'. All the computers can access the Windows 7 computer and read files ok.

All the computers are on the same workgroup, Nothing been changed on any other computer as it all worked before this upgrade! Tried disabling the firewall, set to Home network, no homegroup set. The original vista drive which I 'ghosted' before I upgraded to 7 still works with full access to all networked computers.

Cannot Access Other Computers When IPv4 Turned On

Aug 19, 2012

I have a brand new desktop running Win 7 64 bit and a laptop running Win 7 Ultimate.

The laptop uses IPv4 to connect, verified via ipconfig. The desktop uses IPv6. Each can see one another on the network, but cannot access one another. If I uncheck IPv4 on the laptop, I can then access the desktop PC, but cannot surf the internet. Once I click it back on, I lose access to the desktop.

I have tried connecting to both with and without homegroups enabled, but I think it's the IPv4 on the laptop that's causing the issue.

How can I get these two to play nice? The laptop hooked up wirelessly with an Aetheros AR5007EG adapter via Realtek PCIe FE Ramily controller. Can I force the laptop to use IPv6 somehow?

Unable To Connect To Wifi - No Network Access/limited Access

Nov 10, 2011

Last night I was on the internet at home absolutely fine and my laptop automatically downloaded an update, since then I have been unable to connect to my wi-fi. I deleted the updates and was still unable to connect, so I tried to used a system recovery restore point and every one I use starts but fails to complete. So, I did a factory reset after around 8 hours of trying to sort it out today and I STILL have the same problem. I can plug in the cable to connect and my housemate is having absolutely no issues connecting and neither is my phone so now I am at a total loss what I should do to resolve this. Prior to the factory reset I was able to connect to the wi-fi but it was stating no network access/limited access and now it simply won't connect to my internet at all. It finds my full strength signal but will not connect. My drivers for the Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n card are the most up to date and the laptop (HP G62) says it is working fine.

Unable To Network Two Windows 7 64bit New Computers

My Equipment:

Two new Windows 7 Premium 64 bit Computers (Service Pack 1), one is a Dell XPS 8500, the other built by NCIX... both are Intel i7 processors. One is using an add on NIC card (Intel) and the other using the internal NIC card(Realtek drivers).I have attempted to create a homegroup with both computer with success. The other computer was able to join the homegroup also with success. The issue is that I can see both computers listed in the network and sharing center, also in windows explorer on each computer. If I double click on either computer icon and either computer, I get this error message (see ntw1.png)

I know that my network is working as I can access my network drive through my netbook but I am unable to see my computer or netbook through both devices, but seen as my net-book was able to see my pc prior to reformatting I am pretty sure it is an issue with my computer. I have done all the usual checks through the network and sharing center to ensure that everything is shared correctly and that network discovery is turned on.

Unable To Sync Computers Over Ethernet Cable

Dec 28, 2009

I have just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop and now find that I can no longer sync (I'm using Syncback SE) over a patch cable between ethernet ports. I had previously been doing this quite effectively on Windows XP and my procedure was.

1. Both computers were in the same workgroup and accessed the same wireless network (secure).

2. Ethernet patch cable - usually showed up in the lower right corner as having 'limited or no access'.

3. Shared my user folder on the laptop (after disabling wireless for security - but this worked whether wireless was disabled or not)

4. Ran Syncback SE ver 4.1.3.0. and synced my files between the laptop and desktop.

Then I bought Win7U for the desktop, and the same procedure as above worked fine between Win7U-desktop and WinXP-laptop.

Then I bought Win7U for the laptop, and what happened next was odd :

1. It worked like a dream - really fast transfers etc, scanning very fast. I think that at this time I had somehow managed to put both in the homegroup but they were communicating over the ethernet.

2. As the sync was taking place I launched ITunes and synced my iPhone. It may be coincidence, but the ethernet cable connection was lost at that point.

3. Now I cannot re-establish the ethernet connection.

What is the correct procedure for achieving what I'm trying to do above ? Why does HomeGroup insist on using my wireless connection instead of using the ethernet cable direct connection ?

<whine on> In my close to 20 years of using Microsoft Windows, why haven't they managed to make two Windows PCs recognise each other and share files quickly and simply, like you can with that other OS.....<whine off>

Can't Access Other Home Computers Drives Since Windows 7 Reinstall

Oct 16, 2011

I recently did a complete reinstall of Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop computer and now I can't access shared drives on my wife's Windows 7 computer (home ethernet network). I was able to install and use the shared printer attached to her computer. I am able to add her shared drives to my Windows Explorer as mapped network drives, but if I click on one an error box pops up: "J: is not accessible. Access is denied."

Her computer and all of her drives show up in the Network section of Windows Explorer, but if I click on one, I get a Network Error popup saying "Windows cannot access \Wife-pcc. You do not have permission to access \Wife-pcc. Contact your network administrator to request access." I am able to control her desktop and transfer files using UltraVNC...that's actually the only way I can transfer files at the moment.

If, from her computer, I right-click her C: drive, select Properties -> Sharing, it shows the drive is shared. If I click the Advanced Sharing button, and then click the Permissions button, under "Group or user names" it shows "Everyone", and shows the permissions as Full Control, Change, and Read. What else do I need to do so that I can access her drives as Mapped Network Drives? I was able to do so prior to reinstalling Windows 7 on my computer, and nothing has changed on her computer.

Network Performance - 4 Computers Sharing An Access Database?

May 2, 2012

I am working on machines at a local car lot heres the system details.Verizon DSL wireless router, don't know the exact model but all 4 computers are hard wired to it with newer cat5e.4 newer desktop computers, within months. all 4 same specs. They are HP systems with 8gb of ram running Win 7 x64 They use a program called car lot manager, it basically is installed on 1 machine and creates an access database. Then that folder is shared. The other 3 computers install the software and access the database file through that share. The database file was about 100mb which I figured was probably the issue, so I cleaned it up and compressed it. Its now down to around 40mb and has the exact same issue.-- The issue is, if more than 2 computers have the car lot manager open (not even using, just open) it begins to move extremely slow to where windows take 2-3 minutes to open and the application hangs. And I'll add we have tried different combinations of which computers are running the software, trying to see if maybe 1 certain machine was the issue.I have been on the phone several times with the programmer of the software and he claims it is ran at several large car lots as well with 10 or much more computer systems and he verified everything is setup correct and looked through his software. The original setup was the Verizon modem into a netgear 8 port gig switch, then the 4 computers into it. I removed the switch just to see if anything changed, it didn't seem to make a difference.

2 Computers Say "identifying...no Internet Access" On Ethernet For ~15 Minutes After Startup

Sep 11, 2011

Both my laptop and desktop are running Windows 7 64 bit. They both have the same issue through wired ethernet, but not through wireless connections. The reason I do not use wireless is because I only have 2-zero bars in my room. I am at a college campus and they have said the problem is mine and not theirs. The problem is that whenever my computer turns on or awakens from sleep, the ethernet connection is gone and for about 15 minutes it says "Identifying... No Internet Access." The wired connection starts after about 15 minutes, but this is insanely difficult and frustrating to maneuver around since I often don't have 15 minutes to wait.

I have tried various things from forums to no avail. These things include disabling IP 6, updating my ethernet driver from the website, manually setting the IP, and disabing Avast. I do not have any firewall other than Windows Firewall and only have basic programs like Office, Itunes, Firefox.... I am convinced the issue is with the college network, but they have said their test computer was unable to duplicate my problem in my room.

Unable To See Home Network Computers In Windows Explorer Network Screen

Unable to see home network computers in Windows Explorer Network screen.

One laptop is fine and sees the network. The other just stopped seeing it; rebooted the laptop; rebooted HAL; did a number of refreshes without any luck. I opened EXCEL and found a worksheet that was listed that I knew was saved on HAL. Was able to open the file and when I tried the SAVE AS I could navigate through all of HAL just as normal. Went to Windows Explorer and still no HAL listed as a COMPUTER on the NETWORK. I have a internet connection so I know I am making it to the router at least. And when I check NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER it shows an active home network. The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601.
