I have two win 7 computers on a home network and I would like both machines to have full access to the hard drives on either machine, not just share folders. How is this done?
View 2 RepliesI recently did a complete reinstall of Windows 7 64-bit on my desktop computer and now I can't access shared drives on my wife's Windows 7 computer (home ethernet network). I was able to install and use the shared printer attached to her computer. I am able to add her shared drives to my Windows Explorer as mapped network drives, but if I click on one an error box pops up: "J: is not accessible. Access is denied."
Her computer and all of her drives show up in the Network section of Windows Explorer, but if I click on one, I get a Network Error popup saying "Windows cannot access \Wife-pcc. You do not have permission to access \Wife-pcc. Contact your network administrator to request access." I am able to control her desktop and transfer files using UltraVNC...that's actually the only way I can transfer files at the moment.
If, from her computer, I right-click her C: drive, select Properties -> Sharing, it shows the drive is shared. If I click the Advanced Sharing button, and then click the Permissions button, under "Group or user names" it shows "Everyone", and shows the permissions as Full Control, Change, and Read. What else do I need to do so that I can access her drives as Mapped Network Drives? I was able to do so prior to reinstalling Windows 7 on my computer, and nothing has changed on her computer.
I have some questions about window 7. I want to switch two hard drives from a different computers; one mechanical and one ssd. The problem is they both have window 7 os 64 bit oem editions. Is there any legal way for me to accomplish this? And if a an alternate universe me does it regardless, what is the potential consequences it might face?

I have a home network with 2 laptops and 1 desktop. The desktop I use as a "file server" in that all work done on the laptops is stored to the desktop. The desktop computer name is HAL. One laptop is fine and sees the network. The other just stopped seeing it; rebooted the laptop; rebooted HAL; did a number of refreshes without any luck. I opened EXCEL and found a worksheet that was listed that I knew was saved on HAL. Was able to open the file and when I tried the SAVE AS I could navigate through all of HAL just as normal. Went to Windows Explorer and still no HAL listed as a COMPUTER on the NETWORK. I have a internet connection so I know I am making it to the router at least. And when I check NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER it shows an active home network. The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601.
A while back I shared all my main pc drives on my newtork by right clicking on the drive in my computer then clicking the share tab. I then later un-shared them by unclicking the tab but all the computers could see the drives that had been previously shared from my main computer. They could even access them even though they had been unshared. I then later reinstalled windows7 on my main computer but the drives are still visible and accessable from computers on my network.

I went to BIOS, I only see the new drive as SATA, the other one is mentioned as IDE. ( both of them are SATA drives)

I have 6 wireless computers on a home network. My wireless router has an input to accommodate a printer. Currently the printer is connected to computer 1 via USB and all the computers can print from the printer as long as computer #1 is turned on.
My question is how do I configure the printer through the router so that the other computers can use the printer without #1 computer being turned on?
I think i read somewhere that i could route all the comps on my home network through my computer in order to cut down on my kids getting around the firewalls and virus protection. i am fixing to go to linksys E3000 and AE2500 adapters for their comps. can anyone point me in the right direction on how to make everything run through me, so i dont have probs with the kids circumventing the network.

The install was eventually successful and the computer turns on and runs fine. The old C drives (they were two disks linked together) is now listed as the F drive, but windows 7 won't let me access the drive, saying "you need to format this drive).I was worried that I had somehow broken them, I moved my system back to the original configuration (with the two drives in slots 0 and 1) and xp booted and ran just like it used to.

I have finally figured out through some internet research, how to get their computers to access mine. However, when I go from my computer to theirs, I get asked to enter a network password. All of the password protection is off. It's saying something I'm not understanding underneath the user name and password request boxes. It says Domain: and has my PC name on it. View 5 Replies View RelatedI created a vpn 'server' on a XP pro machine...I am using a Win 7 Home machine as the Client...I vpn in...goes thru perfect...I cant actually see the computer or get to it by name, I only can if it input the ip \10.0.0.? when I do this i get a Enter Network Password...I have tried the user/pass I created for a shared folder on the target machine...i have tried the admin user/pass on the target machine...i made my user/pass on my Windows 7 machine the exact same as the taget machine and nothing works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on machines at a local car lot heres the system details.Verizon DSL wireless router, don't know the exact model but all 4 computers are hard wired to it with newer cat5e.4 newer desktop computers, within months. all 4 same specs. They are HP systems with 8gb of ram running Win 7 x64 They use a program called car lot manager, it basically is installed on 1 machine and creates an access database. Then that folder is shared. The other 3 computers install the software and access the database file through that share.The database file was about 100mb which I figured was probably the issue, so I cleaned it up and compressed it. Its now down to around 40mb and has the exact same issue.-- The issue is, if more than 2 computers have the car lot manager open (not even using, just open) it begins to move extremely slow to where windows take 2-3 minutes to open and the application hangs. And I'll add we have tried different combinations of which computers are running the software, trying to see if maybe 1 certain machine was the issue.I have been on the phone several times with the programmer of the software and he claims it is ran at several large car lots as well with 10 or much more computer systems and he verified everything is setup correct and looked through his software.The original setup was the Verizon modem into a netgear 8 port gig switch, then the 4 computers into it. I removed the switch just to see if anything changed, it didn't seem to make a difference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUntil recently I ran windows xp. I shared a built in wall Ethernet jack with another desktop. I used my router (Linksys Befsr41) as a switch by disabling dhcp and connecting the wall ethernet and the two computers to the Lan ports on the router. The other desktop until recently was also running windows xp, but was upgraded and is now an apple imac running os x lion. My internet briefly stopped working but I was able to reset my router and get my internet running again. I then needed to reformat my build and installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I cant quite pinpoint my problem. If I connect straight to the wall ethernet jack i have internet access. However if i use my router as a switch to get internet for both my pc and the apple imac, I will not have internet access. Sometimes the internet does indeed come back on in this circumstance, only to get disconnected again shortly. I am not sure who to blame because the router worked fine when spliiting ethernet for xp machines, and I have internet access when running straight from the wall to my pc

Sometimes after I hibernate my laptop and then wake it up, I am unable to access my shared drives on my laptop from my desktop. I am always able to go the other way (access shared drives on desktop from laptop. When it does this, even reboots of both machines don't help.
I just asked Windows 7 to diagnose and I get this. Usually after "messing" with the network settings, log offs, reboots, who knows, it usually starts working both ways again until some later hibernation restart of laptop. I wish I could pinpoint some common things that cause it but I just can't figure it out. Any ideas?
I have two HP desktops running Windows 7. One is connected by wire to my router because the router is right near that PC. The other PC is downstairs and connected wirelessly. There is also a Mac downstairs, connected by wire. We also have an internet TV, Playstation 3, smart phones and tablets. All of these last items connect wirelessly to the network without problems. The HP PC downstairs can see and access my PC upstairs, as well as all my external drives, media server etc. I can see and access the Mac. I do see the other HP PC in my network folder, but when I try to access it, it won't work.I have discovery turned on on both. Strange thing is that sometimes, it works. But only now and then, and there doesn't seem to be any reason to this.
I thought that maybe mixing wired and wireless devices could be a problem, but all the other devices are fine. Also, I forgot that I sometimes use my Vista laptop, and that connects fine to other devices. It's only that one PC downstairs that I can't access. Is there a way to remove it from the network folder and maybe have windows 'find' it again?
I have windows 7 pro on two computers, how do I access complete network drives without sharing individual folders and and using passwords, I hate using passwords, and I don't have anything on my computers worth protecting, I wish windows 7 would just let me turn off all that security crap. I never had a problem with XP.

I've tried a few tweaks on my Windows 7 desktop and my Kubuntu 11.04 Linux-running laptop. Nothing has worked. Unless access to a shared directory is set to guest on the laptop, the Windows box keeps asking for a legitimate password, whenever I attempt to 'open' them.
Both machines have the same log-in strings for both basic log-on and Samba. Or do they? I'm presuming there's no separate logon/password required for Windows 7 Home Premium when it comes to file sharing, but as a late Windows XP Professional user (both SP2 and SP3), I'm not taking anything wholly for granted. Any Windows build since the dawn of XP that installs without gpedit.msc is bound to be lacking in other ways, imco.
Is it possible to install a software application (cookbook program) on one win-7 pc, then access / run this program from a different win-7 pc?

I cannot change any of the parameters of the network at all. Under XP on the same network I have no problems at all.I have set up three access points by simply adding additional wireless modems (of the same brand as the primary modem), turning off DCHP and U PnP and assigning a unique IP address, to avoid DCHP conflicts (as I understood it).Which change would I have to make to the access points such that Windows 7 fully recognises each access point and allow me to assign them to type "Home"?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy wife has a home based photography business. Her studio is located on our property. Currently her network consists of her PC, a Motorola DSL Modem/Router from ATT and an external USB HD.
She would like to be able to access her photos that are at her studio from home, say on a laptop but I am unsure the best method for this. She needs to be able to access these images in such a way that she can post-process them in program such as Photoshop at home, and then save the image so that it updates that file in her studio when shes completed the post editing. So, basically it's like being able to edit images in 2 places while keeping the original files and the saved processed images in one central location.
I don't know if this means NAS, something in the cloud, or simply remote accessing the PC through Windows. Or perhaps some other method that I don't know about.
I consider myself to be decently informed when it comes to computer stuff but I want to get this right the first time around so I figured it best to gain insight from those who are more skilled than I before moving forward.
I have recently been having difficulties with connecting with my wireless connection. We have a in-home router that is connected to two computer's downstairs by cable. I however own a Acer, Windows 7 laptop that I mainly use upstairs and I get a Excellent signal strength.I have connected to my Home wireless connection before with no problem but recently the connection keeps coming up as ~Identifying... No Internet Access.Also when I have had connection to this network prior to this problem the connection is under Home. But when I try to connect to the same network it comes up as Public or just keeps Identifying. I have the connection set to Connect Automatically.Also the yellow triangle with the exclamation point almost always pops up immediately when I reboot my system or after I Disconnect and Connect the network again. I have tried Disabling and Enabling the network in the adapter settings and this does not work either. In the manage wireless networks tab, I have repeatedly deleted the connection and reentered the security password and again put it as automatically connect but it still comes up as Identifying. I have seen many people with this same problem and have tried many of the suggestions to no avail.It is rather bizarre because my connection will be in this Identifying state for a while and randomly connect properly and I have no idea what makes it go off and on so erratically. I just had it working again for a few days and it is again acting up.

Read far enough and you'll see that I solved that problem using Networking issue - Win7 printer, XP remote machines.Fast forward 13 or so months. Since that time I have replaced the printer, I've had a motherboard and processor issue with my box (since fixed), and no interruption of things working as they should. My printer - Canon ip4800 series - is USB hardwired to my Windows 7 computer, and the other home computers - two Windows 7 laptops, an XP box, and an XP netbook - can print to the printer, and view files on my Windows 7 machine, over our wireless home network. And that's been constant through the changes described.
Then yesterday, for no known reason, my daughter's Windows 7 laptop stopped being able to print. She'd send jobs to the correct printer, but they'd just queue up, with the queue visible from her machine, but not when I looked at the printer from my machine (that is looking at the print queue from her machine shows the jobs, but looking at it from mine shows no jobs).Nothing I did would result in stuff from her machine, from any application, to go to the printer.I finally deleted the printer from her machine, figuring I'd just add it back.I try adding a printer to the laptop, it doesn't find the printer on the list of available printers. When I try adding it by typing the name - \mywin7canon ip4800 series - that fails.When I look at "network" from her laptop, my computer shows up, but if I click on it, Windows says it can't connect.
When I type ping her_computer from a DOS box, it can't find it - but when I type ping any_other_computer it finds those.Her laptop can get on the internet from our home wireless network. All the other computers in the house - Windows 7 and XP - can access shared files on my PC, and more importantly, print across the network to my USB printer.Please, patiently and precisely, guide me through stuff to check on my PC and her laptop, to get this working again. I have Brother MFC7340 printer connected to my HP home premium Windows 7 64 via a USB port. There is no ethernet connection. I want my Windows XP computer, connected to the local home network via ethernet hard connection through my wireless router to be able to print either with a hard connect or wirelessly to this printer.
