I am working on machines at a local car lot heres the system details.Verizon DSL wireless router, don't know the exact model but all 4 computers are hard wired to it with newer cat5e.4 newer desktop computers, within months. all 4 same specs. They are HP systems with 8gb of ram running Win 7 x64 They use a program called car lot manager, it basically is installed on 1 machine and creates an access database. Then that folder is shared. The other 3 computers install the software and access the database file through that share. The database file was about 100mb which I figured was probably the issue, so I cleaned it up and compressed it. Its now down to around 40mb and has the exact same issue.-- The issue is, if more than 2 computers have the car lot manager open (not even using, just open) it begins to move extremely slow to where windows take 2-3 minutes to open and the application hangs. And I'll add we have tried different combinations of which computers are running the software, trying to see if maybe 1 certain machine was the issue.I have been on the phone several times with the programmer of the software and he claims it is ran at several large car lots as well with 10 or much more computer systems and he verified everything is setup correct and looked through his software. The original setup was the Verizon modem into a netgear 8 port gig switch, then the 4 computers into it. I removed the switch just to see if anything changed, it didn't seem to make a difference.

I currently own a PC and a laptop. I have an external HD on my PC and I'm trying to be able to access those files through my laptop via XBMC. I've followed many tutorials online to no avail. I don't know much about networking or file sharing so there's my first downfall. I've tried setting up a home group on my main PC but the join home group option is grayed out on the laptop.
PC is windows 7 Professional x64
Laptop is Windows 8 x64

i have a desktop and a laptop:
desktop:
user: alex
password: password
laptop:
user: alex
password: password
On the laptop, i now want to share a folder with the desktop, but only for the desktop, not for the whole homegroup, nor the whole network. They are both in the same homegroup, as well as some other computers.
As the accounts are the same I added the user 'alex' in the advanced sharing-options with full control. But it ditn't work, so I googled and also added full control for the user alex in the security options. But if I want to acces the folder from the desktop, I still get "no permissions". I, resp the user alex have/has admin-rights on both machines.Did I miss something?
I noticed that in the advanced settings of both sharing and security I can always just choose the local machine as a "location"... got this something to do with my problem?

I just built a Jerry-rigged light weight storage computer so I don't have to leave my dev/game comp/volcano on all the time anymore. I also bought a laptop recently as well. What I'd like to do is make the data (on two logical drives to be specific) completely accessible with full privileges to the laptop and this main PC however there are other users on the network that I don't want to share everything with (but still some).I can use PC Anywhere for some things but the end result I'm looking for is a handy couple of links on my desktop to the two raid drives and carry on as though they were still on my comp (and laptop now too), but also not include all users at the same time. (but also have the option to set up sharing for the folders they need access in too)Is this within the capacity of Windows 7? All computers have Win 7 and belong to the same home group.

We have a server machine running windows 7. just a few days ago, it started not being able to access its own sharing folders. From network, I can see all other computers(Xps and Window 7s). I can access other computer's sharing folders too. But when I try to access the server's own sharing folder, it gives me this error message:
"Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click diagnose. "

I would like to know if there is a program I can use to Audit who access a share folder, which files has been changed, date and time, who deletes a file(s) (or maybe I can restrict to Modify but not delete). I have a workgroup of computers and an external hard drive connected to one of them (I do not use a NAS or networked HD because I need more speed in this computer to receive all the info I received almost daily).

I am trying to allow only certain computers on my HomeNetwork to access a network drive. My router is a BT HomeHub 3 and thecomputers are all connected by ethernet cables, the computer I don't want tohave access is wireless. The network drive is connected to the network using aUSB on the HomeHub. I can access the network drive OK on all the computers, butI don't want the wireless computer to have access. I have tried and tried towork it out, nut the more I look the more confused I get. I'm sure there mustbe an easy way to this problem. Any help will stop me having sleepless nightsthinking of how to do it.

If I change the folder properties accessing a shared folder (say pictures) over my home network, will it alter the folder's properties on the drive on which it resides or just the folder on the machine I am using to access the folder?
I am accessing my pictures folder on my desktop from my laptop from the other side of my house. The pictures and videos folders are set to "general items", the customize tab of the properties on the folder is set to "general items" when I access it from the laptop. If I switch the pictures to "pictures" and videos to "videos" on the laptop, will it alter the folder in the desktop on which the folder resides?
Hope this is clear enough, Thanks for any help, I have a hard time with sharing and permissions.

I am running Windows 7 on six computers. I can see all of the six and they can see mine. I have finally figured out through some internet research, how to get their computers to access mine. However, when I go from my computer to theirs, I get asked to enter a network password. All of the password protection is off. It's saying something I'm not understanding underneath the user name and password request boxes. It says Domain: and has my PC name on it. How can I get the access to go on their PC's?

I have tried over and over to completely disable sharing over my home network of my personal documents folder (not the public folder) yet it still shows up and is fully accessible on any computer in the house. I have a password but that's not the point, I want to be able to make the my documents folder inaccessible completely from other computers on the network. It's disabled in the sharing properties but that makes no difference. Any ideas?

I have main PC [office_PC]. On that PC is basically everything. music, pics, videos etc. It is the primary computer but I also have a laptop and a tablet that access that data too. I need/want full access to everything on the office-PC read/write. no problem easily done and I have had no issues currently until today. (64 bit win 7 system)
My daughter saved up and purchased a netbook [Morgan-Netbook] (OS:win 7 starter). I got her on the network and when connected it asked about homegroup so I said yes and now I see her and she sees me. BUT she has full read/write access to everything on the PC. I can access everything I would expect via the homegroup but then under the "network" icon I can see all my shared folders and she has way more access.
I would like her to have read access to pics, videos and specific folders but not necessarily everything else. I have tried adding her as a user in the sharing permissions but my Office PC only wants to see Location as "office-PC" so I cannot choose her from a list to restrict her access specifically. If I limit the access globally then I lose it for me as well. How do I limit access to just her so that she can see the folders we want but she only has READ access?

Is it possible with the non-Windows 7 machine's shares set to something besides "guest access allowed"? I've tried a few tweaks on my Windows 7 desktop and my Kubuntu 11.04 Linux-running laptop. Nothing has worked. Unless access to a shared directory is set to guest on the laptop, the Windows box keeps asking for a legitimate password, whenever I attempt to 'open' them.
Both machines have the same log-in strings for both basic log-on and Samba. Or do they? I'm presuming there's no separate logon/password required for Windows 7 Home Premium when it comes to file sharing, but as a late Windows XP Professional user (both SP2 and SP3), I'm not taking anything wholly for granted. Any Windows build since the dawn of XP that installs without gpedit.msc is bound to be lacking in other ways, imco.

I have 5 Windows 7 computers connected to the same homegroup/workgroup via a Cisco Linksys E1200. All four computers are HPs of various makes, 3 laptops (one of them is a $600 brick) and 2 desktops. Any computer that is awake and online, shows up (with its name) in Network on the other machinesHowever, double-clicking to view files on these computers returns the following message:Code: Windows cannot access \COMPNAMECheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Totry to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.Details: Error code: 0x80070035 - The network path was not found.Diagnose, as expected, did nothing. However, here's the fun bit - when I try to access files on other computers by browsing their IP address, everything works perfectlyFor now, anyway. I'm expecting a sudden degradation any day now.

Issue #1: All of a sudden, I couldn't print .pdf files (various adobe error messages in different browsers, or messages telling me I hadn't selected a print range - yes I did!).
Issue #2. I followed some advice and uninstalled Adobe Reader, then tried to re-install it. I can't re-install it. When I try to re-install using Internet Explorer, I get the first two dialogue boxes where I checked "run," but the third dialog box I am supposed to get, according to Adobe, never pops up - the one that is suposed to ask me if I want to grant permission). I temporarily disabled my software security and tried again, but the third box never comes up. The adobe instruction page just sits there - no signs of life, download activity, brainwave activity, etc.
Issue #3. I followed more advice and tried to install Adobe Reader using a different browser - Mozilla. Just for fun, the issues are different this browser - still can't download, but this browser tells me "unable to write to temp. directory C:usersmynameappDatalocalmp29061 error = 3 = > The system cannot find the path specified" It tells me to change my permissions, or save elsewhere. It never gives me the opportunity of a choice to save it elsewhere, and I can't get access to the folder to change permissions. I can't find it, after getting advice on how to find it. It's just not there! I am the administrator of this home computer.
Issue #4: In the meantime, I had placed a call to Adobe's help desk. They called back and told me to first install Google Chrome, which is more compatible with newer versions of Adobe Reader.
Issue #5: When trying to install Google chrome, I went through the same download problesm as under Issue #2 and issue #3. I found a version of Google chrome already downloaded on my computer, however, and launched it.
Issue #6 I tried to download Adobe Reader now using Google Chrome. Nope, same issues as before. I spent lots of time trying to get find and/or get access to temp file. Can't find it to change permissions on it .
Issue #7 I am minutes away from throwing pc into a snowbank and running over it with my car. Multiple times.

I was trying to display Hidden Folders/files to access an appdata folder under C:Usersusernameappdata. (it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same. When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.

I formatted my PC to another installation of Windows 7 Ultimate(also the one I had before the format).
Now before I formatted windows on drive C:, I encrypted a folder with Bitlocker. Now this folder was on another harddrive D: on my PC. After the format on C: drive, I cannot access any files in the encrypted folder anymore. The folder is color green(so are all the files inside) and when clicking on any file inside, it tells me "you don't have access to open this file".

When I access my Music files (2600 files, 185 folders, 20GBs) on my Samsung (D) drive I get this slow green line in the address bar going from left to right, takes like 15 seconds to go across, I'm assuming it's indexing(?) the music folder and can't really do anything until that green line finishes going across, is there something I can turn on or off to speed up the "green line" so I do not have to wait the 15 seconds? Would a SATA 6.0 drive help speed up the "green line"?

I want to be able to access and change files on my main pc, from my laptop which is in a different room, same with my wife's pc as well. Each time I go the network, I can see the computers, but each time I want to access files it comes up asking for password and user name.I have never set a user name or password and it is confusing the hell out of me to sort this out....
1.do I have to make sure the files are in a particular place, and saved in that place all the time?
2.can I not make "my documents" available to my wife and my laptop, and vice versa if they are swtiched on?
There must be a way to share our individual files and make them read write for ourselves?
