Software To Audit Access To Sharing Folder

Jun 3, 2011

I would like to know if there is a program I can use to Audit who access a share folder, which files has been changed, date and time, who deletes a file(s) (or maybe I can restrict to Modify but not delete). I have a workgroup of computers and an external hard drive connected to one of them (I do not use a NAS or networked HD because I need more speed in this computer to receive all the info I received almost daily).

Cannot Access Its Own Sharing Folder

Nov 26, 2012

We have a server machine running windows 7. just a few days ago, it started not being able to access its own sharing folders. From network, I can see all other computers(Xps and Window 7s). I can access other computer's sharing folders too. But when I try to access the server's own sharing folder, it gives me this error message:

"Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click diagnose. "

Can't Get Rid Of Audit Mode

Apr 11, 2012

I was trying to install an OS on my SSD and got myself into audit mode thought the command prompt. Well, i've decided to not do install the OS there, but now I can't get audit mode from coming up everytime I restart the PC, not to mention things like anti-virus don't work currently. I've already tried navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetupState and deleting the value for ImageState, but it is not working. What do I need to do to get rid of audit mode? Also, when the PC first launches, I have the option to run in OOBE mode. I tried doing so, but it just says a fatal error has occurred.

I have taken the following steps and can't get past the last one:ExplorerNetwork(server 1)Here it won't show the files available to be shared on (server 1) until I put in a password. Not Responding When Trying To Set Up Folder Sharing?

Jun 9, 2011

I'm trying to set up my boss's computer with a folder on her C: drive for her scans from our office copier. Her laptop is part of our network. Our servers run Server 2003 R2. Her laptop is new and is a 64-bit Windows 7 pro. When I try to set up the sharing it gets hung up and says Sharing Files (with the green progress bar going and me being alerted that it may take a few minutes). Then it just says at the top after a long while that it's not responding. If I wait it out it then says that the folder is shared but when I try to do things like view its properties it just starts to not respond again.

Can't Access Any Folder By Double Clicking, Can't Access User Accounts Or Dell Backup

Mar 4, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 545s Desktop - Intel Duo Core 2.93, 6gb RAM, 720gb HD, 64bit Windows 7

I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)
"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a progra or, if one is already installed, create an assocation in the Default Programs control Panel".

I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).

Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.

I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..

Sharing A Folder To A Vista Computer

Oct 11, 2009

I know this question has been asked several times, and I've done a lot of research into it already, but I still can't seem to change my folder (in this case D:Movies) to be shared an accessed by my Vista x64 primary computer.

When I go into my Network and access the computer, it lets me view the shared folders that I've set sharing on, but when I actually double click the folder to open it I get this error message:

Windows cannot access XXXXX-DownloadsMovies

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. The error code is 0x80070005.

When I diagnose it tells me that the folder is available but my user account doesn't have access. However, I've already disabled password protected sharing, and I've accessed the Public section of my sharing settings and enabled everything that I read in previous posts, all to no avail.

I also read up on selecting the folder, then clicking the Share With.. tab and selecting "Everyone Read/Write", every time I try doing this as soon as I select the Share With.. tab again it's defaulted back to Nobody.

Here's the part I'm not sure could be causing all of this:

This folder, Movies, was originally on my Main Desktop PC (the Windows 7 machine is my new downloads machine) I bought a new 1.5TB sata2 hdd and set it up on my x64 vista (main) and transferred my movies folder on to it, then I uninstalled the hard drive and reinstalled it on my windows 7 x64 (downloads/secondary pc)

So the folder was originally on another computer, but was swapped via my new 1.5 TB hard drive, I'm not sure if this is related as I'm not a guru when it comes to any OS.

Regardless, I really need to get this folder on my Windows 7 machine accessible on my Windows Vista primary as soon as possible. If you need anymore information regarding either of my computers please let me know and I'll gather it as fast as I can,

Folder Properties When Sharing Over Network

Dec 30, 2009

If I change the folder properties accessing a shared folder (say pictures) over my home network, will it alter the folder's properties on the drive on which it resides or just the folder on the machine I am using to access the folder?

I am accessing my pictures folder on my desktop from my laptop from the other side of my house. The pictures and videos folders are set to "general items", the customize tab of the properties on the folder is set to "general items" when I access it from the laptop. If I switch the pictures to "pictures" and videos to "videos" on the laptop, will it alter the folder in the desktop on which the folder resides?

Hope this is clear enough, Thanks for any help, I have a hard time with sharing and permissions.

Sharing Folder From Windows 7 To XP Machine - Permissions Error

May 25, 2009

I have gone through my Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7RC and turned everything on except Password Protected Sharing. I have joined both Windows 7 and Xp machines into WORKGROUP. I can access my Public folder and my shared printer from my Windows 7 machine on my XP machine. I'm trying to share my Mp3 folder, thats on a secondary HDD in my Windows 7 machine.

Path being "E:StuffMp3z". No matter what I change as far as permissions, adding HomeGroupuser to the Advanced Sharing dialog...everything I've tried, my XP machine can see the share, but I get the ".......is not accessable. You may not have permissions...." error in XP trying to open the shared folder. And what's up with not having a folder icon with a Share symbol in Windows 7 so by looking in Explorer you can tell a folder is shared?

Network Performance - 4 Computers Sharing An Access Database?

May 2, 2012

I am working on machines at a local car lot heres the system details.Verizon DSL wireless router, don't know the exact model but all 4 computers are hard wired to it with newer cat5e.4 newer desktop computers, within months. all 4 same specs. They are HP systems with 8gb of ram running Win 7 x64 They use a program called car lot manager, it basically is installed on 1 machine and creates an access database. Then that folder is shared. The other 3 computers install the software and access the database file through that share. The database file was about 100mb which I figured was probably the issue, so I cleaned it up and compressed it. Its now down to around 40mb and has the exact same issue.-- The issue is, if more than 2 computers have the car lot manager open (not even using, just open) it begins to move extremely slow to where windows take 2-3 minutes to open and the application hangs. And I'll add we have tried different combinations of which computers are running the software, trying to see if maybe 1 certain machine was the issue.I have been on the phone several times with the programmer of the software and he claims it is ran at several large car lots as well with 10 or much more computer systems and he verified everything is setup correct and looked through his software. The original setup was the Verizon modem into a netgear 8 port gig switch, then the 4 computers into it. I removed the switch just to see if anything changed, it didn't seem to make a difference.

Selective Sharing On Network - Read Access To Specific Folders

Sep 4, 2011

I have main PC [office_PC]. On that PC is basically everything. music, pics, videos etc. It is the primary computer but I also have a laptop and a tablet that access that data too. I need/want full access to everything on the office-PC read/write. no problem easily done and I have had no issues currently until today. (64 bit win 7 system)

My daughter saved up and purchased a netbook [Morgan-Netbook] (OS:win 7 starter). I got her on the network and when connected it asked about homegroup so I said yes and now I see her and she sees me. BUT she has full read/write access to everything on the PC. I can access everything I would expect via the homegroup but then under the "network" icon I can see all my shared folders and she has way more access.

I would like her to have read access to pics, videos and specific folders but not necessarily everything else. I have tried adding her as a user in the sharing permissions but my Office PC only wants to see Location as "office-PC" so I cannot choose her from a list to restrict her access specifically. If I limit the access globally then I lose it for me as well. How do I limit access to just her so that she can see the folders we want but she only has READ access?

Netgear DGN2200, Windows 7, Win XP, No Printer Access Or File Sharing?

Mar 10, 2012

I bought a NETGEAR DGN2200 modem/router to connect my 2 laptops, printer, USB HDD for file storage and sharing, and at this stage I'm not sure if I will connect my desktop PC as it is a much older machine with Windows 2000 Pro which I don't want to access the internet, although I am thinking that it would be better to have the printer connected via the desktop as this is logically a more permanent setup. Hard wired ADSL will be connected in about 2 weeks.I was having a bit of a play with the router to familiarise myself with it all and I managed to set it up so that my main laptop (Windows 7) has the option to connect by hardwire or wireless, my second laptop (winXP) conects through wireless. Both laptops successfully connected

I connected the printer to my second laptop (winXP) to see if I could have access to the printer from my main laptop (Windows 7). It could see the printer but not access it and kept trying to search for the diver. As I hadn't installed the drivers onto this laptop I thought that if I download the driver and install it, then it won't look for it through windows update via the router. For this to happen, I had to disconnect from the LAN and connect to the internet via my USB modem (the two won't work simultaneously). So I connected the printer to my main laptop and allowed it to find the driver online itself.

I then connected the printer back into the second laptop (winXP) and tried to access it from my main laptop and the same thing happened, it wanted to search windows update again. After failing to find anything through the windows update, it gives the option of browsing for the .inf file on the computer, and although I spent a while trying to locate where the file was I was unsuccessful.I also am unable to share files between the two laptops, although I have turned file and print sharing on with both laptops. I have seen options to set up workgroups (winXP) and homegroups (Windows 7), but the two are not compatible.

Network File Sharing With Windows 7 Home Premium - Guest Access Allowed

Dec 24, 2011

Is it possible with the non-Windows 7 machine's shares set to something besides "guest access allowed"? I've tried a few tweaks on my Windows 7 desktop and my Kubuntu 11.04 Linux-running laptop. Nothing has worked. Unless access to a shared directory is set to guest on the laptop, the Windows box keeps asking for a legitimate password, whenever I attempt to 'open' them.

Both machines have the same log-in strings for both basic log-on and Samba. Or do they? I'm presuming there's no separate logon/password required for Windows 7 Home Premium when it comes to file sharing, but as a late Windows XP Professional user (both SP2 and SP3), I'm not taking anything wholly for granted. Any Windows build since the dawn of XP that installs without gpedit.msc is bound to be lacking in other ways, imco.

Cannot Access Downloads Folder

Sep 7, 2012

Since installing Windows 7 Pro I've had odd issues with the default Downloads folder. Long story, but I've had three or four different Downloads folders - under the user profile, on the desktop, in the root folder...

The one I'd been using was located at C:usersCarsonDownloads. To test something (the behavior of Firefox) I deleted that folder. I ran Firefox and downloaded something and it re-created the folder in the same location.

But... Now I can't access the folder. When I access the folder properties and the owner, it tells me 'Unable to display current owner'. I can't delete it, can't change permissions. How can I get control of the folder again?

(Yes, I know I can download into any folder I like. Many applications, such as browsers, use the default downloads folder location, so it's a lot simpler to just use it and not define another.)

Can't Access Shared Folder

Jul 6, 2011

I have Windows 7 Professional x64.My pictures are located in this folder: L:Users<name>My Pictures

I want to share this folder with another user on my computer. Can't do it.

Simply altering the folder's permissions doesn't work. If I change permissions so that the folder in question does not inherit any permissions from parent folders, and instead allow my user read-only access to the folder...access denied.

Alright then, I tried to share the folder with my user. Although sharing usually means sharing with other computers on a network, it also applies to other users on the same machine. But the user can't access the shared folder...access denied.

I could move the folder in question to the Public user, but then everyone can see it. Holy cow...what does it take to share a folder with another user on the same computer?

Cannot Access 1 Folder Over Homegroup

Oct 23, 2011

I have 7 on both my laptop and tower PC, I share my entire D drive from my tower over the network (homegroup)... i like to keep a mirrored copy of the drive, so I can copy everything from the D drive to the laptop.Absolutely everything copied EXCEPT one folder. I have no idea why this folder will not copy... windows just says "you do not have permission to access"I've done this plenty of times before, never changed the attributes of the folder or anything. I recently formatted both of the systems so everything is nice and clean, no system problems or anything.

I tried moving the folder to another location on the D drive but it's still says I do not have permission... I try just sharing that particular folder, full control, but it sill says no permission. However, I've copied a few of the sub-folders to another location, and I CAN access them. So it must have something to do just with that folder
