Trying To Rescue Data But Getting System Restored

May 28, 2011

My laptop died but the HDD was okay. I've taken the laptop HDD out, bought an USB/caddy for it and attached it to another laptop as an external drive. The trouble is the new machine sees the external drive, but all its seeing is system reserved and the reserved part of the HDD is tiny. So its not the total drive size and defintley not the data I need to rescue. How would I see the whole drive and access the data?

BSOD Using WMP System Restored To 4 Days Prior

Aug 20, 2012

I have a Lenovo B560 with Windows 7 x64. Sequence of events: Played music from a WD external HD with WMP. Music stopped playing and a terrible constant sound is coming out of the speakers (which began a year ago and happens sporadically), no other programs running besides WMP.2. BSOD appeared while the noise kept going, so I held down the power button to turn off the laptop before reading the error message.

[INSTALL] Booting From Restored System Image Fails?

Jan 22, 2011

My Win7 HP x64 PC has two hard drives, each partitioned into two volumes:

My C: and E: drives are each half of a 200GB drive, both NTFS.
My D: and F: drives are each half of a newer, 1TB drive, both NTFS.
My F: drive has around 400GB of 'stuff' that I want to preserve.

I've been trying to migrate the win7 installation from C: to the first partition of the 1TB drive with two different tools (Norton Ghost and the built-in Windows backup utility) and both fail identically. The backup procedure itself appears to work in both cases.Restoring the backup to the first partition of the 1TB drive "works" in so much as I don't get any errors either way.Creating the requisite boot structures also work, as the O/S appears to be bootable. However, when the restored O/S makes it to the login screen, two flaws are evident:

1. The keyboard absolutely does not work.

2. If I log in on an account that doesn't need a keyboard (no password), I see "Loading desktop", then a few seconds "Logging out" and I'm back at the login screen.

If I look at the event viewer logs (booting up with the O/S on the smaller drive), I see numerous events like this:"The AVGIDSAgent service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.""The Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

Installed A New Hard Drive But Can't Get System Image Restored?

Nov 10, 2011

I just installed a new hard drive after my previous one failed to start up. I have a backup image stored on an external WD Passport. The install went well. I turn on my tower with the Windows 7 recovery disc in, start up System Image Restore and plug in my Passport. The system restore recognizes my Passport and when I go through the wizard to reformat and partition the disk to match the layout of the recovery image, I get an error message saying "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. *hyperlink* Details."Details states, "No disck that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. Try the following: 1) A probable system disk may have been excluded by mistake. a. Review the list of disks that you have excluded from the recovery for a likely disk. b. Type LIST DISK command in the DISKPART command interpreter. The probable system disk is usually the first disk listed. c. If possible,, remove the disk from the exclusion list and then retry the recovery.Tried that, my disk is not listed as an exclusion.2) A USB disk may have been assigned as a system disk. a. Detach all USB disks from the computer. b. Reboot into Windows Recovery Environment then reattach USB disks and retry the recovery.

Hang Up On "Please Wait", System Restored, Now Black Screen?

May 31, 2012

So a couple of days ago, my PC started hanging up on a "Please Wait" loading screen in between the "Starting Windows" screen (where the Windows logo forms from coloured orbs) and the user account selection screen. Sometimes I'd leave it half an hour and it still wouldn't load.To start with, I simply gave my PC a hard reboot, and the problem would go away. When this stopped working, I system restored, and then the problem disappeared. This morning however, I performed a system restore from safe mode, and now when I boot my PC, in whatever mode, I get the "Starting Windows" screen, then the PC hangs up on a black screen with only the mouse pointer active.

Rescue Laptop OS From HD Image?

Jan 1, 2012

Laptop mobo fried, need to extract image from the HD to reimage to PC's HD then adapt it using Paragon Adaptive Restore so it will start on different hardware.Have ordered this cable converter set: Amazon.com: SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for 2.5 / 3.5 Inch Hard Drive / Optical Drive with External AC Power Adapter. What I am not sure of is if I will be able to capture an image using Acronis when laptop HD is plugged in via USB using converter above. Wonder if I should have ordered converter to IDE although I will be doing this via remote with a user who's nervous about opening case.If I can capture the image and it will reimage onto PC HD, then I have the PAR disk to adapt it to new hardware.

Reinstalling From Rescue Discs After Virus?

Nov 9, 2011

The other day my computer was infected with "FakeSysDef" virus. "Microsoft Safety Scanner" detected it, and cleaned it(MS Security essentials and MS Malicious Program Removal Tool both failed though). I didn't realize that a browser hijack/redirector was left behind, so in the middle of the night another virus named "Privacy Protection" installed itself. Malwarebytes cleaned that one up. But the hijacker was still there. "Spybot" Hijack tool fixed that. Now my computer is clean and useable, but it's a buggy mess. Alot of things don't work right anymore.

*My "all programs" list in control panel is blank(programs are still installed though).

*I can't get a desktop background picture to stay.

*Some installed programs aren't listed in the "programs&features" list, so I don't know how to delete them.

*Other programs like Bing won't delete because it says they are running(but they're not).

*Some of my picture and music folders are locked, but I can get into them through shortcuts from other parts of the computer.

The System And Data Partition

Dec 30, 2009

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and saw that the users private and public data are still saved in the C:Users of the system partition.

So, I'm looking for a specific guide for Windows 7 that separates the system partition from the users private and public data, saved in another partition on the same disk. In addition, private data created during the creation of new accounts (including the Administrator account) must be saved directly in the other partition.

In other words, in the C:Users directory, the All Users, Default and Default User directories must only remain and its must to be fully functional.

Transferring Data Between Hard Drives In System

Mar 27, 2011

I'm having issues with transferring data between hard drives in my system. I have 3 500 GB drives in my system connected via esata. Just a few minutes ago I tried transferring 24.1 GB from one hard drive to another and it took forever I was getting under 10 MB per second. Once I got everything transferred I created a folder in the drive I moved everything to and then moved the same 24.1 GB plus another folder that was 10 GB and everything transferred into the folder instant, so fast I couldn't every look to see how long it was taking cause it was there the minutes I moved the folders to the new folder. Why did it take so long transferring that same data from one hard drive to another one in my system?? I should be getting a whole lot more than 10 MB per second.

Migrate Partitions / Data To A Single Disk System

Nov 16, 2012

A little background on my system's configuration. My system was/is configured is a two disk RAID0 with a system partition and two other partition for Windows and programs. I'm wanting to migrate the partitions/data to a single disk system. I created a system image using both the Windows backup software and Novabackup. The problem I'm having is restoring either of those images to a single disk. Is it possible to restore an image from a RAID configuration to a single disk? If so, what am I missing? No matter which image I try to restore from, I either get a fail from Windows or can't be done in so many words from Novabackup. I just want the RAID image on a single disk.

Marks Data Drive With System Attribute Cannot Delete

Dec 6, 2009

windows is marking a data drive with a system attribute. Think it is happening in backup. I was hoping that someone would have an idea of what I was doing wrong. Or at least how to turnoff system attribute on the data drive so I could delete volume. I have reinstalled windows 7 (twice) and gotten the same results.

1) primary boot partition is 140 GB on C. Fresh install of Windows 7. I reformatted the install directory. No Windows.OLD directory after installation.

2) create a backup --> all user files and system image to DRIVE E (2TB)

3) after image is created --> Drive I (1 TB drive) is marked with a system attribute. Drive I has not been accessed at all and is clean.

4) Drive I is still empty. At no time was any data ever place on it. Also the partition on it was deleted and reformatted immediately before the reinstall of windows 7.

Future system images want to include DRIVE I

There are no files on DRIVE I -- unless Backup put them there. I have used GPARTED to delete the partition on I and reformat it, but same behavior reoccurs on backup.

I have windows 7N running on a normal motherboard (6 sata ports) no raid running. Motherboard is using standard intel ICHXR SATA RAID controller with most current drivers.

Relocating System Partition (Copying Only Data Required For Booting)

Mar 10, 2011

I recently (~2-3 months ago) installed windows 7 on a brand new 1TB hard drive. This hard drive is broken into two partitions - C & G. Windows 7 is installed on C; and G is only for data storage etc. Here is the description of partition C from Disk Management:

C: Simple Basic NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 98 GB

Unfortunately, "System" is missing from that description. Somehow "System" ended up on hard drive L - an old 80GB IDE drive that has migrated from build-to-build. This drive has just started on the *hopefully* slow road to death. I decided to retire this drive when I discovered I couldn't securely erase it because it is the System partition (there is only one partition on this drive).

So, how I can relocate the system drive data to another drive (preferably C) in the safest way possible. I found a solution here: [URL]. But I don't want to copy the entire contents of L to a new drive, all I want is the data needed for booting, and to securely erase everything else on L. Looking around, it seems I may be able to boot from a Windows 7 repair disk and recreate the system files on C, but this seems risky and likely to require a full re-install if something goes wrong.

Restored DriveImage XML, Windows 7 Won't Boot

Feb 28, 2011

My Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit OS got messed up so I restored the original image I made from DriveImage XML successfully. Now when my PC boots, I get the mobo splash screen and then just a cursor. When I put my Win 7 install disk in I can "press any key" to boot from it and the DVD goes right to where I can repair my installation. It sees my partition and when I use the cmd prompt using diskpart, I can see that the win 7 volume is c:, active, and all my files are in the right spot. However when I look at the volume numbers, my c: is volume 2 and my DVD drives are volumes 1 & 2. So how do I change my c: drive to volume 0? I've read that this is how you set the c: to boot properly.

The Win 7 drive is a WD 500gb IDE. When I put this drive into any other PC, it does the same thing. Mobo splash or POST screen then just a cursor. I can't enter Safe Mode or anything except to put a disc in the DVD drive and boot from it. I tried fiddling with my mobo settings and they are normal. If I take my Win 7 drive out and put it as a slave or as a USB external drive, I can see everything and do whatever with the files.

I do not have a backup of these two primary partitions, however, I do have a paragon backup of my logical drive D: extended partition. I got me a new HDD, created a new NTFS primary partition with a drive letter C:. I then restoed the paragon backup of my windows D: drive on to this new primary C: partition. Now, I am not able to boot windows 7. Seems like I need to create a new system partition with boot files to be able to boot my Win 7.
