I have question regarding shrinking of partitions in Windows 7 !I am unable to recover windows due corruption of OS. I have only single partition in which Win 7 is installed. Can I somehow shrink the partition to create Unallocated space to perform a parallel installation to save my data?

I'm trying to shrink my primary Windows partition because I want to create a partition to install Linux Mint on. Well, when I go into the Windows Disk Manager and try to shrink the partition, it doesn't let me shrink it more than 32MB. I need quite a bit more space than that.I've disabled System Restore, Hibernation, and the page file.After defragging, I had 200MB of space available to shrink with. That's not much of a step up.I also want to try to avoid third-party applications unless they're basically guaranteed to work. I've heard some horror stories about third-party partitioners completely ruining systems.

View 9 Replies View Relatedim due a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit the way i do this is to make a copy of my existing OS and put that on a second drive, i then keep this and use it as my main OS, i then put a new copy of Windows 7 on my main drive and move the stuff over from the back up that i want to keep, this way i know i wont lose anything. this time i want to partition my main drive and have dual boot one for normal use and one for gaming but when i did the back up the hdd drive i was using had a partition on it and the OS told me that i had to delete the partitions so i could install Windows 7. is there something i need to do first to be able to have 2 OS's in 2 partitions on one drive or is it just not possible to do?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI agree that to run DOS stuff on Windows 7 a DOSshell is the way to go, but I had a DOS and Linux partitions setup before I installed Windows 7 and guess what, it doesn't see them at all! It seems like Windows 7 isn't backward compatable at all, or perhaps doesn't read FAT16 (EXT3 I didn't expect it to read), will check FAT32...Yup reads FAT32 from USB sticks, but reads FAT16 from USB Sticks, just not FAT16 first partition (MSDOS6.22) from the main SATA drive (C: is the fourth and last partition).

I once had a dual-boot Windows XP Professional SP3 and Windows 7 Professional. Partition 1 could be accessed from both OS, but Windows 7 could not and still cannot 'see' Partitions 2 and 3. While it was still a dual-boot, switching back and forth between the systems was the only way I could access the data in Partitions 2&3 from Windows XP. Now that I have a clean install of Windows 7 only, (stupid me to have forgotten this problem) I cannot access the files at all. I have tried restarting the system, reinstalling the HD driver, replugging the HD, and the problem still persists. What I have managed so far:

Windows 7 doesn't recognize my D partition though windows XP used to recognize it just fine on my computer, and it also used to work fine on that HDD using that same version of windows 7 on my old computer. I have 2 physical HDD's (320 GB each) and 6 logical drives (2 + 4 primary partitions, all NTFS). After installing Windows 7, two of 4 partitions in one hdd have become inaccessible - disk manager still shows them, but I can't neither set a drive letter, nor view properties. I get the following error:
"The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by usin the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart computer."
Both of the inaccessible partitions are fine in Windows XP. Any ideas or solutions ?

C: 72.06gb NFTS (system), D: 72.05gb NFTS, PE: 4.89gb FAT32 (unknown partition), No Volume: 47mb unknown type (EFI system partition) this partition displays diagonal lines in disk management. I want to remove these so I only have one C: drive (149gb) where win 7 will be installed. How would I go about removing these during the install procedure? Should i just delete the no volume, PE and D: drive? Or should I delete all 4 partitions? Little confused on this rather ask before I do something wrong. From what I read the 47mb partition is the asus boot booster which speeds up boot time which I don't think I need with win 7.

I have a 6 month old Samsung ultraportable that has developed Windows problems and I am trying to re-install Windows 7 Pro. The history is that Windows 7 Home Premium came pre-installed, and I upgraded to 7 Pro right after I bought it, with no problems. Everything has been great until the last 2 weeks when the laptop would not start. After trying multiple times to recover, including the Windows recovery disc and Samsung's internal recovery options, I have given up and am now attempting a clean, fresh re-install. I have already done this once (yesterday) and I am having the same non-start problems.
In an attempt to do this in a truly clean way, I want to wipe out everything that might be leftover. My question is how to do this, particularly regarding the partitions that are already setup on the laptop. Here are the partitions that setup is finding:
Disk 0 Partition 1, 10.6 GB/0.0 MB free; "Primary"
Disk 0 Partition 1, 4.3 GB/4.3 GB free; "OEM (Reserved)"
Disk 1 Partition 1, 100 MB/70 MB free; "System"
Disk 1 Partition 2, 446 GB/393 GB free; "Primary"
Disk 1 Partition 3, 19.7 GB/959 MB free; "OEM (Reserved)" - this one is also named "SAMSUNG_REC"
Questions:
1. Should I leave all these partitions intact, or delete them and start over?
2. If I should leave them intact, into which partition should I install the fresh version of Windows 7 Pro?
3. What is your advice on whether other partitions should be set up for A) programs, and B) data (documents, photos, music, etc)?
My computer is knackered and I want to wipe it clean and start again. I don't want to keep ANY of what's on there as it had a virus that corrupted my internet explorer and I want to fix it. I have backed everything I do want up onto disk already.So I'm installing windows 7 custom installation from rebooting it as it says, but it gives me options to format or delete 3 partitions: 1 is a reserved small space (~1.5GB i think), the other is the vista operating system (~55GB), the last is a data partition (~50GB). So now I don't know which I can and can't delete in order to clean my computer completely, yet still have it working and working via windows 7! What is the difference between formatting and deleting anyway, will formatting clean my explorer of the virus it had?

I believe my 2tb external USB 3.0 hard drive has been corrupted (just the filesystem) and after trying to create a backup of my 200gb Steam games collection, the computer crashed halfway through. The culprit is the dying drive my games were on (hence my attempt to move them to the external for backup). I rebooted to only find that my hard drive was corrupt. The partitions were fine except it read as RAW not HFS+ (running Windows 7 64-bit and Macdrive).I attempted to recover data using gparted live cd and testdisk. Unfortunately I'm now left with no partitions and a "bare" drive according to Windows. I have not written any data ontop of the drive other than attempting to recover the partition map. I assume my files are intact.I have 1.2tb worth of data stored on the drive and this is important because one of the files contains every single file from my iMac before i wiped it and sold it. This file is a direct file copy (.dmg compressed) of that computer. Planning to restore to a new mac once I buy one.

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy niece was telling me her dell was not working right so I decided to just do a clean factory restore as a scan with malware bytes revealed over 30 viruses/trojans! Someones gonna get a sit down to talk about her surfing habits but I digress. I figure at this point a clean restore is easier than trying to remove these viruses.
So I go to do the normal F8, repair my computer step and see that the repair my computer function doesn't work. Ok let me boot to windows 7 disk and select the repair option and use that for factory restore. Again nothing, usually Dell datasafe options will allow me to do this. I then notice that the recovery partition was not showing up.
I called her and asked and it seems my sisters so called boyfriends fancies himself a "computer expert" and last time they were having problems decided to just reinstall windows which I assume some how lost the connection to the recovery partition.
I installed EaseUS free partition manager and see that the Recovery partition is still there just not accessible. Is there a way I can make this partition bootable again so that i can assess it from the repair menu and possible repair this back to factory?
also if I go like im going to reinstall windows when it says in what partition you want to install windows I can also see the recovery partition.
