I have a recently bought 500GB external hard drive (NTFS) which I want to partition to have a 100GB partition formatted to either FAT32 or Mac Extended Journaled.I have 228gb free on the drive, but when I go to Shrink Volume in Disk Management, it says I only have 342mb available?!I've tried de fragmenting the drive, but that doesn't seem to There isn't any software left that came with the HDD, so it can't be that

I'm trying to shrink my hard drive (500 GB) so I can try out Mandriva OS but I can't, whenever I try to do so i keep getting parameter is incorrect. Any suggestions guys? Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Oh yeah, consider this my 2nd question, before I was trying to make a new partition I tried installing Mandriva via the disk, but it filled like 50 GB worth of files and I can't find those files.

According to the system (after fist shrink) the c drive is 204gb free of 295gb, but I can't shrink it further. I've done a disc clean up and emptied the recycle bin. Oh and is it appropriate for me to use this topic to ask another question regarding explorer.exe as while i am inside a folder i delete (by choosing delete from the context menu in the tree view) while inside that folder on this particular laptop PC explorer. always crashes, collect information, sends it and restarts explorer. I have not experienced this problem on any other pc running any version of windows 7, oh and the same happened with build 7264 x32 and the current install of build 7600 x64.
Have recently purchased a small usb inspection snake camera with led light and when testing it plugged it into two desktops computers (one xp pro not sure of the other as it was a network work computer) It automatically loaded the drivers and brought up a screen automatically with the realtime image.(no driver disc came with it). However plugging into my windows 7 64bit sony laptop it signals a connection beep, loaded drivers automatically but wouldn't open or show up on my computer disc manager as an external usb source to click on. It does however show up on device manager as a usb camera and when I unplug and replug in it disappears and reappears so I know I have the right camera (not the lap top webcam inbuilt one that shows USB 2 Camera). Have tried updating drivers automatically and uninstalling it etc. Need it to work on the lap top so it can act as the movable screen for it?

So now the drive wont show up, so I simply created a Simple volume and know it is a RAW drive? When I disable the network controller in Device Manager, the controller is disabled but nothing changes in Device Manager to identify the device as being disabled. When I used to do the same thing in Windows XP, the device icon turned yellow. Is there some setting to identify disabled devices in Win 7's Device Manager?

In Windows 7 (Ultimate x64), it seems the default behavior for handling volume changes from media keys is to apply them to the default audio device. That is, unless the device sending the volume keys happens to also contain a soundcard, in which case Windows applies the volume changes to the device. On the surface this makes sense, but in practice it can be mildly annoying to some people. Consider the case with my keyboard: on most days, I have a plain old keyboard with media keys. My media keys control iTunes in the background and change my default system volume. Works great. But my keyboard has ports for a headset w/mic. When I plug in my headset my plain old keyboard is now keyboard+media keys+playback device+recording device. Now, Windows decides volume media keys originating from the keyboard should be applied to my headset volume. Bummer.
This is what I'm looking to change. I want the volume keys to continue affecting the default playback device (my headset has inline volume control). I'm hoping it's just a registry edit, but I'm willing to pick apart whatever I have to to make the change.
PS: It may be worth noting this only applies to media keys using USB scan codes. If the device happens to use the PS/2 scan codes for Mute, Vol Up, and Vol Down the changes are applied to the default playback device. This provides another alternative way of changing the behavior: if I can remap the action taken for the USB scan code to the action taken for the PS/2, it would also accomplish what I'm after.
I have question regarding shrinking of partitions in Windows 7 !I am unable to recover windows due corruption of OS. I have only single partition in which Win 7 is installed. Can I somehow shrink the partition to create Unallocated space to perform a parallel installation to save my data?

I'm trying to shrink my primary Windows partition because I want to create a partition to install Linux Mint on. Well, when I go into the Windows Disk Manager and try to shrink the partition, it doesn't let me shrink it more than 32MB. I need quite a bit more space than that.I've disabled System Restore, Hibernation, and the page file.After defragging, I had 200MB of space available to shrink with. That's not much of a step up.I also want to try to avoid third-party applications unless they're basically guaranteed to work. I've heard some horror stories about third-party partitioners completely ruining systems.

I have an acer aspire 5610z and i know it is not compatable with windows 7 according to acer but everything works apart from the audio!when i go onto device manager there is no audio tab but when i go to system> there is a "high definition audio controller" which i have been trying to install the audio drivers to because the usual audio device is not there in device manager.I have done a fresh install and updated the majority of the drivers but i cannot find the audio one anywhere ive tried downloading the vista one and running it in compatibility mode and it is a realtek one that is reccomended.

So i look at the device manager and there was no trace of bluetooth, previously there was a Peripheral Bluetooth. So i manually re-install the driver and then its stuck on this page, Activate Bluetooth using Wireless Switch, on the lower right it say Cancel Installation.

My synaptics pointing device has disappeared from my computer. The mouse would appear on the screen but with no movement. Had to enable a usb mouse.
I've had the mouse disabled before, I would go into Device manager to re-enable. Now it isn't even showing up in Device Manager. There wasn't an option for 'mouse or pointing device' until I installed the usb mouse.

For a while now, I've had problems with USB devices, but today I was looking online and someone mentioned a solution to a problem I was having, saying to look in Device Manager under the Ports tree.My Ports tree in DM is gone, but I also don't know how to access my COM3 port or other ports any other way. Should the Ports tree be there?
