View 2 RepliesAlright, so this is kind of complicated. I really hope someone can help me. This weekend, I was unable to login to Windows. When it got to the login page, I got no response from my keyboard or mouse. I tried 3 system restore points, none of which worked, so I had to go with a full system recovery which returned my computer to factory settings. I use Norton 360 so I had all of my files backed up to their online storage. When I went through the computer set-up, it set up a profile for me under the name jmdunn2. When I recovered my files from Norton, it said that it restored them to the original location, but that location was now under the C:/Users/owner tab. I want to just be able to move these files into the C:/Users/jmdunn2 tab, but when I right-click, I am not given the "Move to" or "Copy to" options. It seems like they're all locked into place somehow.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a newer system with Windows 7 64-bit running. I manage many other machines and really have never had to think about the indexing service. It always seems to work decently although it has its faults. However, this is my personal machine and want it to work somewhat as it should and there's something way out of whack here. I built this system online and it has performed flawlessly. Not a glitch - except the indexing part of it.My hardware:1. Gigabyte H67A-UD3H-B32. 8 GB Memory3. Crucial Model 300 SSD4. WS 500GB Black Caviar HD5. 2 Dell Monitors6. Plain vanilla networking w/built in ethernet7. HP DVD R/W DriveI have configured what I want indexed and what I don't but not much of a change from Microsoft defaults. Services.msc reports that the indexing service and Windows Search servie status is "started" with "automatic" startup type.
The problem is no matter what I do my index only contains about 4,000 files. I have much smaller system that have over 800,000 files indexed and there's many more files on this machine. I've tried rebuilding the index many times, uninstalled and reinstalled the Index and serch services. Changed the registry to run indexing at full speed and left the machine on full power overnight and STILL always get around 3,000 to 4,000 files indexed. I have searched via the start menu and while in a folder using Windows Explorer. I check to make ABSOLUTELY sure I have the folder in the list of Indexed folders (control panel->Indexing Servce) and yet a search doesn't come back with ANY files. Occasionally, while searching in the Windows Explorer search box I'll get a message that I should add C: to my search list but it's already there. Obviously a few of the folders on the C: drive are in the exclude list but most are not.I know I haven't given much to go on here but I'm hoping someone will see something in my description that will spark an idea to go with that I haven't already tried. I wish I could give you a really comprehensive list of what I've done but I've been playing with this on and off for the last several months.
I'm going to provide too much info because those of us who are computer knuckleheads think everything is important since it's all a mystery to us.
My main computer crashed and data has been retrieved from the hard drive including all my Outlook Express dbx files. There are four years of e-mails in these files and critical that I be able to open them.
My only working computer runs XP. It has Outlook Express installed on it and was once used for e-mail, but no longer and not set up with my provider to send or receive if that matters at all. Other than sending and receiving all other OE program functions seem operational.
I have read many explanations on how to open dbx files on various sites - every one is completely different and most seem far beyond my skill level.
I've deleted some stuff through the W7 Recycling bin and emptied it. How can I make sure the deleted data cannot be recovered?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMoved doc, docx, xls, xlsx, jpg files from a backup drive to a new computer. Files showed up, and I used them for a few days. As it was a demo computer I changed the owner name via regedit. Then could not locate the files. Have used two undelete programs, these locate the files. When recovered however, although the names show, the contents are unreadable. Went back to the backup drive. Cannot locate the files, even using an undelete program.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm a newcomer to the forums, but I've been having a problem that's been plaguing me for a long time. Whenever I am transferring a large number of small files of maybe when I am installing a game, for example, my system starts hiccuping and fulfilling simply tasks such as opening Microsoft Word take a lot longer. The processor usage remains pretty low, and it hardly uses more than 50% of my available memory.I have bought two 1TB Seagate HD's two days ago and mounted them under RAID0, for I was considering the problem was a faulty HD. The performance of the RAID is where it should be according to HT TACH, but today after installing Armed Assault 2 the same problem happened again. My system is overclocked to 3.7GHz, and I've tried running everything under vanilla BIOS configuration and the problem still persisted
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get several peoples opinion. I believe that a small disk that is bootable similar to a ssd is better that a large one full of data. There is less disk to deframent and it should be faster. The larger data disk will contain most of the files many of which will not be used a large part of the time. One can keep larger files such as pictures or videos in that data disk. I probably prefer a small ssd(less than 100GB) but am not sure that is the best way to go right now. Later on when the price and quality of ssd goes down I could substitute that drive for the small hd partition or drive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently recovered my data from a biohd-8 error. Can someone please tell me which files can I copy back to a hard drive in order for my system to start again and make it useable again. I do not know if any of the files were damaged in the recovery process.
1) If I am able to restart my system by copying these files, will I need to re-activate Windows 7 again?
2) Would I copy the files to the root of the hard drive?
3) I also have the system restore disks that I made a while back, can I use these to install the files into a new hard drive and will windows 7 work?
I was reading this tutorial Default Operating System - Change Default Boot OS and noticed that my system has "Recovered" appended to it check this out: there is nothing else in the pulldown menu btw
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Thunderbird for my e-mail account. Somehow, Thunderbird was updated to 10.0. Now my e-mail texts are so small that I can barely read them. I downloaded an application that allowed me to increase the size of the fonts in the listing. However, the messages are still small. I tried setting the options to a larger font but that did not work. Two questions: Is there some way to increase the size of the text in both the email list and the messages. Two, can I just remove the new version and download an earlier version of Thunderbird. I don't know what version I was using, but I was perfectly satisfied with it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Win 7RC 32 onto a 160 GB hard disk which I partitioned. I allocated about 25 GB to C: system, and formatted the rest on to a D: drive for data. I've found that this may have been a mistake, as getting program installations to default over to D: are problematic (and not recommended by Microsoft, as per some previous threads I've read here).
And so I am running out of C space, and have several programs "manually" installed over to D. Quite frankly this is a pain, and I am about ready to throw in the towel and just try to extend the C drive. But maybe there is a way to avoid?
My question is this: what's my best approach to correct all this? Specifically, I'd like (if it is possible) for all my libraries/directories to default to D: so that I can readily reinstall Windows 7 (or downgrade) the C: System drive should it become necessary. This was my original goal and hope. I was able to have this with XP, although that was some time ago and I forgot the steps.
Anyone have an good suggestions for me, or should I just extend C: and give up this idea?
I ran into a small problem (not sure if its windows related at all).
I have a new monitor and resolution set to 1920x1080 but when I set a window, any browser or windows window, I miss about 50px on each side.
I'm always bothered with one thing. That when i write another name rather than Removable Disk, EVERYTHING STAYS IN CAPITAL LETTER.
How can i write in small letters , like Alex instead of ALEX.
I have just mounted a Samsung solid state drive 830 series in my Sony Vaio VGN-SZ laptop and have installed Windows 7 Home Premium. The screen size is too small. Maximum resolution obtainable is 1024x768. How can I increase the screen size?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a new computer, pre-loaded with windows 7. I hate it! It seems to me the most stupid retrograde step Microsoft has ever made. After the simplicity of Win XP Microsoft seems to have taken steps to hide everything they can and make it as difficult as possible for the user to comprehend it and....;. Why oh why have they made everything so small. I usually sit about 500mm from the monitor. Now I am getting a stiff neck peering closely to read simple print. Is there any way I can make it all bigger, as I can with Word and I.e?
