I Made C: Partition Too Small

May 25, 2009

I installed Win 7RC 32 onto a 160 GB hard disk which I partitioned. I allocated about 25 GB to C: system, and formatted the rest on to a D: drive for data. I've found that this may have been a mistake, as getting program installations to default over to D: are problematic (and not recommended by Microsoft, as per some previous threads I've read here).

And so I am running out of C space, and have several programs "manually" installed over to D. Quite frankly this is a pain, and I am about ready to throw in the towel and just try to extend the C drive. But maybe there is a way to avoid?

My question is this: what's my best approach to correct all this? Specifically, I'd like (if it is possible) for all my libraries/directories to default to D: so that I can readily reinstall Windows 7 (or downgrade) the C: System drive should it become necessary. This was my original goal and hope. I was able to have this with XP, although that was some time ago and I forgot the steps.

Anyone have an good suggestions for me, or should I just extend C: and give up this idea?

Created New Partition And Made It Primary - NTLDR Missing On Boot Up

Aug 31, 2010

I created a new partition, and accidentally made it my primary partition (C: being my primary one and D: being by other one) now whenever I boot up I get NTLDR missing ctrl+alt+del to restart. So I downloaded the windows 7 repair files from one website and tried to fix it, but I failed and now I wanted to know is there any other way I can fix using command prompt or will I just have to reinstall windows 7.

Installing OS On A Small Partition-virtues ?

Dec 1, 2009

Presently I'm running a dual boot with Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 on two partitions. Both OSs have programmes and games installed with them on their respective partitions.

Today I'm receiving a new Samsung F3 1TB HDD.

I've read that it is advantageous to install the OS on a small partition and put the programmes, games etc on a seperate partition.

This supposedly has various advantages- speed, security etc.

Can anybody clarify this for me as I'm thinking of making my new drive my c:/ drive and putting Windows 7 on that (dropping Vista altogether) as it will be faster than my current main drive.

Would it be a good idea to put Windows 7 on a small partition and everything else on the main body of the drive?

If so how do I go about it. I can install and partition but how do I install programmes and games on a separate partition and access them?

I know this is a dumb question but I've never done it this way before.

Small Disk Or Partition Better Than A Large One Full Of Files?

Jul 10, 2012

I am trying to get several peoples opinion. I believe that a small disk that is bootable similar to a ssd is better that a large one full of data. There is less disk to deframent and it should be faster. The larger data disk will contain most of the files many of which will not be used a large part of the time. One can keep larger files such as pictures or videos in that data disk. I probably prefer a small ssd(less than 100GB) but am not sure that is the best way to go right now. Later on when the price and quality of ssd goes down I could substitute that drive for the small hd partition or drive.

Can't Read DVDs Made In XP X86 In W7 X64

Apr 11, 2009

I don't know whether the Windows 7 forums are the right place for this question, but I hope someone can redirect me.

I have about 150 DVDs which back up my photographs. They were burned between 2003 and early 2009 in Win XP Pro x86, using Nero v.5. They were burned as data discs, not photo discs. The files are almost all in TIF, PSD or Camera Raw format.

I can read them (i.e. open them in Photoshop) in my XP computer. I can read them in Windows 7 x86 in a VMWare virtual machine. But I can't read them in Windows 7 x64.

The drive is a Pioneer DVR-216DBK, and I've installed the latest firmware. It isn't malfunctioning: I can install programs from DVDs/CDs, and I can write DVDs/CDs.

Searching on-line I found a program named Iso Burner, from which I can slowly and laboriously 'run' individual files (i.e. open them in PS), but I need to be able to see the contents in Bridge.

Can I do this if I:

a) buy a DVD drive that supports older formats, or

b) move the DVD drive that wrote the discs to my Windows 7 machine, or

c) download drivers from....?, or

d) buy the latest version of Nero (which I hoped to avoid; I hardly use DVDs for backup any more)

Update Driver - Can It Be Made To Work Like XP

Feb 8, 2011

In Windows XP, if you try to update a driver and the OS can't find all of the driver files it will tell you which file is missing, and then give you the option to select the folder the file might be in.In Windows 7, if you try to update a driver and the OS can't find all of the driver files it halts with the message "The system cannot find the file specified" and the only option you get is to close the window.I was wondering if there is any to make Windows 7 work more like Windows XP in this regard. Perhaps a registry hack or some sort of modification? Basically I am looking for a way to make Windows 7 look for missing driver files instead of just giving up.

No More Connections Can Be Made To This Remote Computer

Sep 30, 2011

I've got a networking problem that's left me banging my head against the wall. First though, this is a workgroup with the following machines:

Computer 1: Windows 7 32-bit used as a peer-to-peer file server, app and DB server, designated network browser, inbound VPN server (MS VPN)
Computer 2: Windows 7 64-bit used as a workstation
Computer 3: Windows 7 32-bit used as a workstation
Computer 4: Windows XP SP3 used as a workstation
Printer/AIO: Brother Laser, network-attached

Computers keep appearing and disappearing off the network except for the computer #1. In other words, on all the other machines, when you go into Windows Explorer and click on "Network", sometimes only one machine shows up; at other times, all machines show up. Mapped drives work without fail - it is just the network browsing that is unstable.

When only one computer is showing up in the list, if you issue the "net view" command, you get the message, "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept." I'm not sure what is eating up all the available "connections". I thought that Windows 7 allows 20 network connections, i.e., 20 computers on a LAN.

I found a machine that was joined to a non-existent homegroup, and turned that all off, but it had no effect. I've temporarily turned off any firewall rules (F-Secure) that I thought may be interfering with this, but no effect. I've also looked at the lanmanserver registry keys and I'm not seeing anything other than stock settings.

Software To Log Connections Made By Application?

Is there any software that can log all connections done by a software over a period of time? just the IP address and port and basic infos logged is good enough. Basically my friend developed a software for us , like a messenger, and though it is able to connect peer to peer and through its own server, I would like to analyze if it is making connections at random to a specific ip address even when its idle. Ready Made Group Policy Templates?

Oct 21, 2012

I have a multi-account pc that the whole family uses with the following accounts:-

1. Admin
2. Kids
3. Media

I spent ages yesterday setting up GPO (kidslocked.msc) for my kids account and had to go through EACH individual setting. Eventually i got it spot on, but the only problem was that in the event of a problem, i wanted to be able to reset the settings, so that i can setup anything i need. I ended up downloading/running a file from this site:-
Where do i get a reset config file from for GPO?

That file has now reset my GPO settings, but it's also cleared the settings i saved for kidslocked.msc too.

Here is what i want to know:-

1. Can i get readymade GPO templates?2. If the answer to question 1 is NO, then how can i multi-select the settings??...i want to enable ALL settings in the Administrative Templates and then simply disable those that i don't want.
