This is mainly for new users, or for the default user. I have workstations that have several people sharing them and need this for everyone.
I have looked in these locations: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1DesktopIconSize And HKey_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetricsShell Icon Size I played with both these settings for myself, and the desktop icons do not change. If I reboot, the first key value goes back to 32, and the second key stays at 96. But my icons never change in size. I am looking for any way to do this in the registry. I could try copying the ntuser.dat but fear I will still have issues with paths, and other defaults that will cause the same problem I had originally.
Black PDF Icons On Desktop?
Jun 19, 2012I have PDF icons on my desktoip that have all of a suddeen turned black. I also have some that are OK with the regular icon. I have no idea how to solve this problem. I have searched all over for a solution to this problem but indications on how to solve it seems all wrong. Nothing works.The entire icon is black but the PDF logo is displayed in the bottom right corner.

Aug 11, 2011I've been having a repetitive and troubling problem with Windows 7 when signing in to any of the user accounts on my PC.Said problem seems to occur at varying levels, so I'll just put them down in point form to try and avoid confusion:1) The desktop (and icons) show up completely black, and the task bar/start menu (everything, save the mouse, really) freezes, forcing me to hard boot.2) EVERYTHING on the desktop, save for the start icon, shows up black, and the start button is frozen. Once again, the mouse remains active, but I'm forced to hard boot.3) The desktop, icons, task bar and start icon all show up fine, but my PC suddenly freezes, forcing me to hard boot yet again. Once again, the mouse remains active.
I would really, really like to solve this problem without having to reinstall the operating system. I've already reinstalled it once, and I don't want to reinstall Microsoft Office, my security programs, photoshop, etc... all over again.Microsoft Office in particular, as I'd have to buy it all over again. ><At the same time, I hate hard booting my PC. I've heard it's not good to shut down your computer that way, but I literally have no choice when this problem arises
Windows 7 Black Desktop Wallpaper
Feb 22, 2011I CANNOT choose my own wallpaper. I've research what the problem and I've come up with different solutions, but none of these seems to work such as, deleting the Transcoded Wallpaper.jpg.To put it simple my wallpaper is black or a solid color and even if hit "save changes" in the personalize menu in Windows 7, it still won't change. I see the icons, everything is working fine, its just that my wallpaper can't be change and you only could change to a solid color.This issue started when a relative of mine installed iMesh into the computer, I removed it completely and since then the black solid wallpaper has been on my desktop.

Dec 21, 2008I am using Windows 7 build 6956 on a laptop with t3200 2.ghz cpu and intel 4500 gma with 4gigs of ram.Now my problem is that on random cases the desktop would go black more specifically the wallpaper disappears. The taskbar is there working OK, when I click the show desktop button on the taskbar the wallpaper re-appears. When I browse the windows by hovering over the windows all seems fine but when I click on the window the wallpaper disappear again. So far it can be resolved by a simple login/logout but still annoying. The only instances I remember this happening was when I was trying out the slideshow and after playing dota (GARENA).

i have been searching this and other forums for hours trying to find the cause/remedy for randomly appearing black boxes instead of desktop icons after boot up. its 50/50 wether normal icons appear or if black boxes appear. the icon texts are always present.
every time i boot in safe mode they appear normally. i use the "small icon" setting, if i change to medium or large icon size i still get the "small icon" sized black box overlayed on the larger icon (half icon half black box).
has anyone come accross this problem or have any advice for me, bearing in mind my computer skills are limited.
Black Boxes On Desktop Icons?
Jun 29, 2011After I finished playing COD MW2 last evening, I shut my computer down. This morning upon starting it up, I had 3/4 of my desktop icons covered with black boxes. I have tried system restore, deleting the icon cache and reboot all to no avail. I am running Windows Home Premium in 64bit mode. Also ran a malware scan and cleaned everything it found. I am running Norton Security Suite which works great for catching anything that comes my way.

Feb 14, 2012For the past few weeks I have noticed my laptop becoming slower and slower. As of a few days ago it has been ridiculously slow and is sometimes unresponsive to commands or keyboard. It used to go straight to a black screen with only the cursor after start up but now sometimes starts up, although very slow. Now my desktop started doing it too. I don't know what's going on with them. I had not had any virus protection for a while and recently installed webroot complete 2012 on both of them and scanned, finding nothing. My desktop sometimes loads into safe mode when I tell it to, however it still is extremely slow, SAme with he laptop. And if I try to start up the desktop on normal is stays on black screen. I have noticed that sometimes I will get the "Microsoft windows isn't responding" pop up. My control alt delete doesn't work on either of them either, it pos up suing something like " the control alt delete function could not be started blah blah blah".

Every time I start up the laptop the desktop is black, there is no icons, and there is no bar at the bottom of the screen, and also the Libraries Window show up at the start up.
This laptop also did not come with any CD so I don't have an option to reformat do I? I think it maybe a virus but I'm not sure and I don't know what to do about it, when I try to open Mozzila Firefox from that Libraries Window i get a msg saying:

Remote Desktop Failure Black Screen
Aug 3, 2011ok basically lately my remote desktop is flaky.
Scenario is. Activated Windows 7 N Ultimate as host machine (in other room) Activated Windows 7 Ultimate as client machine, am using it now.
If I remote desktop in after logging in locally on the host, I get the black screen for approx 2 minutes at which point it closes with an error.
If I remote desktop in whilst the host is logged out I can connect and log in fine. If I detach from a running remote desktop session and try to relogin again, I get the black screen sympton again and have to logout locally on the host to be able to login again on remote desktop. If I try to login locally on the host whilst the black screen is up here I get rejected due to remote desktop service been busy. I have to wait for the window to close.

Aug 20, 2012Back when it was released, I installed Windows 8 preview on a new partition of my Windows 7 laptop. Ive been switching back and forth no problem, but about a month ago when trying to log in, I typed in my password and was stuck at the black screen with a cursor. After a few restarts and startup repairs it sorted itself out. Now, it's happened again, but this time, startup repair isn't doing the trick. It reports no OS found in the error. I am dual booting between 7 and 8, and in trying to login to 7, typing my password, it again brings me to the black screen with a cursor. I cannot press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reach the task manager and manually start explorer.exe, and same thing happens in safe mode.
I have checked my C drive and saw there were backups of my explorer.exe, so I tried to switch them up with the current one. At one point, I could get to my desktop and see all of my taskbar icons, however hovering over the taskbar would show a loading cursor and I could not open anything. Restarting again brought me back to the black screen. I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, BCD editor, etc, to no avail. I have also tried "last known good configuration", system restore (which reports no restore points...) and checking the registry to verify explorer.exe is the only listing in the Shell file. Also, virus scan MBAM and others: No viruses.
Errors: At one point with the black screen, I let it sit, and a few errors came up after an hour or so... dwm.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, explorer.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, then when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, "Failure to display security and shut down options". In viewing one of the error details, it reported problem event name InPageCoFire, damaged file name propsys.dll. I replaced that file and a clean one and no change. Right now I am using Windows 8 boot. I can see all of my files are still in the Windows 7 partition.

Jan 8, 2012bought a dell touchscreen inspiron one 2320, thought it would be better than my two year old dell (don't see it yet). i am an average user and i am not impressed. anyway the question is why does the monitor go black after 1 minute? i have done all the normal stuff in power options. change power saving settings, change when the computer sleeps. choose when to turn off display. turn hibernation on or off. i upload to Internet and it the shutting down makes it frustrating....
