Cannot View Anything On Desktop Just Totally Black
Feb 1, 2011
i dun know what happened the last thing i know was that my toddler was pressing all the keys on my keyboard.but manages to turn off the computer using the normal keys. at the same time i installed the winamp player.right now everytime i turn on my pc,after signing in and boot up, the only thing i see is black and one folder file.(my computer/file). I can't see all the icons on my desktop, and even the start menu buttons are all hidden. i tried right click on my mouse but not doin anything.
I went on a weekend trip and turned on my laptop in an airport and noticed that I lost some of my desktop icons. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I returned home and discovered that I was using my Public Desktop. I can not figure out how to get back using my admin desktop. When I search my user accounts I find that I have "Default", "Public" and "Ron" this is my admin account. That account now has two desktop folders in it, one folder has all of my previous files and folders and the other just has one file in it that I made while I was gone.
How to disable thumbnail viewing on the Desktop Only .. yet ?? I know how to disable all thumbnail viewing .. But I don't want to do that. I can't see what I'm working with on the desktop.
one day when i was working with my laptop suddenly everythng i mean pictures everythng changed as photo negative colors...i restarted my system...n after that a black screen came on my desktop..i am able to change the desktop and also i am able to perform all d operations but the thng is like i can't view my desktop
unfortunately I downloaded a virus, and when I discovered it I think I cleaned it up using "WiseFixer", but now I can no longer see a link to my desktop in Windows Explorer under "Favorites." I must drill down into the system to find the desktop. I have tried dragging the desktop back to the Favorites but it still does not show up. Any suggestions on how I can get the link to the desktop back up under favorites in Windows Explorer?
For example I have a folder in my desktop with pictures, videos, documents, music, etc. I organized it by grouping by type, somewhere between large & extra large thumbnails, and a few other things. I want these settings applied to all other folders. I went to folder options and applied it to other folders. Nothing changed. My other folders, including my picture folder is still the same way it was. How do I apply to ALL folders? I know you can zoom in on thumbnails by hitting ctrl + mouse scroll wheel, but is there a way you can do it with a keyboard and not the mouse?
All of my view settings seem to stick fine, except when I choose File - Open Desktop in some application. Then it's Tiles view instead of my Details view, as saved for every other folder. in 7 x64I already tried resetting Folder view otions as per Folder View - Set a Default for All Folders
I just accidentally changed my settings on my grapics card so that I can no longer see my desktop on the monitor connected to my HTPC. My HTPC has a monitor attached to it and it also has an HDMI out from the graphics card going to an LED TV in another room. I accidentally switched it so that the desktop can only be seen on the other TV in the other room.
All I can see on the monitor is the blank Windows 7 logo (no desktop icons) and I cannot navigate back to my AMD control page to undo this. I tried rebooting but this does not work. This is an issue as I don't have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse that I can use in the other room to control the desktop. How do I reset this? I am using a AMD HD 6750 graphics card.
The ENTIRE purpose of the recycle bin is to provide the means to preserve deleted files in case they were accidentally deleted. When this feature was first introduced, it was a major improvement over the previous permanent deletion paradigm. However, ever several months, my recycle bin get corrupted, and the only way to delete files is to empty the recycle bin. As such, this feature has become a significant liability as I cannot ever expect to recover deleted files.Yes, I am rather peeved. This is a basic feature of the OS, yet it has failed at least four times over the past 18 months. No, there is no malware on my computer. No, there are no disk problems. No, nothing is reported in the Event Viewer. This is simply a major flaw in a very basic system component.
I am scared silly to attempt totally deleting Skype, then downloading 5.3.0.108, not very good at the computer, can someone pop in by remote to delete Skype so it is done correctly and nothing left that should have been deleted
I have a Acer Aspire Laptop that was running Windows 7. The hard drive had totally crashed so I ordered one from Newegg. It came in and I installed the Western Digital Hard Drive. here was no problem in installing the hard drive. After installing I checked the Bios and the drive was recognized.I had ordered from Acer a set of Recovery CDs which I used today to recover Windows. All went well and I had the system up and running. There were a 109 Windows updates that I started. Went in the other room and came back in about a half an hour and the laptop was dead. I went into Bios and no drive was recognized.
Last night something horrific began happening that's continued today: Every few minutes the entire system locks up no matter what I happen to be doing at that moment: I get the hideous "Not Responding" message when I'm in Firefox, Word, and even in Windows Explorer..."OS (Not Responding). Between last night and right now, I've had to manually shut down the machine with the power button countless times; I have to shut it down and turn it on to be able to use my computer! Last week, I got a new PC with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (from 32 bit on the old one). I somehow created THREE User Account Control accounts in an effort to set up a Standard account like I had on the previous system (Ellen-PC), so I wouldn't have to have permission to do anything. But I still need permission on the UAC I logon to now which is Ellen Administrator. I've tried to change it to Standard account with no success.
ive been using win7 for almost half a year now, and never had ANY problems until recently when ive started getting some totally random blue screens. i saved the crash info from one of the crashes:

I have PDF icons on my desktoip that have all of a suddeen turned black. I also have some that are OK with the regular icon. I have no idea how to solve this problem. I have searched all over for a solution to this problem but indications on how to solve it seems all wrong. Nothing works. The entire icon is black but the PDF logo is displayed in the bottom right corner.
Im having the same problem, I have a TOSHIBA laptop satellite L355 S7915. I remember the good ol days when i could just simply choose a background. Now, its just black. I can change it or choose a different one, but the background continues to be black.
i have this on top of my desktop after a fresh install of windows 7 64bit and and it goes behind they apps but the when click on it goes in front of they apps
Every time i turn on my computer and work on it for a few minute, it freezes! and give me this strange screen,Everything works okay up to this point. it freezes and just stay dead until i manually restart it. i'm not sure if this is due to the graphic card or something. i'm a total noob. if you have any idea what the problem is and how i can resolve it.
I've been getting random lockups for quite some time however here is the kicker,it ONLY happens with more than 4GB of RAM installed...anything less than 4GB I am perfectly fine but anything more my computer locks up totally randomly.Random bits of information: Tested all of my RAM sticks individually and in any combination I can think of,as long as the total is nothing more than 4GB I'm fine and dandy but soon as I hit 6,8,10(Due to what sticks I have I can only go up in multiples of 2GB) I get random lockups.Lockups can happen on desktop when I'm afk and the computer is completely idle, after 2 hours of intensive gaming killing splicers in Bioshock 2 or just while I'm transcoding a movie on the fly(This actually seems to be relatively safe, does not happen often)On the lockup whatever sound that was playing repeats(The last 0.2 seconds of it or something) so it sounds like BZZZZTTTTTT no matter whatNew motherboard, new PSU and hard drives passed a chkdisk recently(Albeit with some grumbling from them about bad sectors)SFC scan completed,no problems to report with my file integrity.PSU has plenty of power for the systemJust recently installed SP1(After the problem started) in an attempt to fix it,to no avail by the looks of the recent lockup and now I have no updates pending so windows is fully updated.
Obviously checkSUR ran with no problems before installing SP1Booting into an Ubuntu liveCD and running random stressy things for the computer does not produce the same effects,it runs perfectly fine.Computer temp is high but within an acceptable range most of the timeOnce it crashes/locks up once it sometimes does the same on boot again and again till I just leave the thing alone for an hour or two and try booting it up againEvent Viewer just shows this for each event when it locks up and I'm forced to reboot it manually:[CODE]
I have a very close friend who is having pc issues, is short on cash, and needs her pc for work. Where she lives (Russia) PCs are insanely expensive and there really are not any decent ones available. I offered to build her a new PC from scratch to cut down on cost, but the cost of a new windows install is prohibitive. She already has a valid windows 7 home premium license with her old PC, and the old PC will be going in the trash after proper cleanup, or possibly being reused with ubantu or something. Either way, the old PC will not be running windows 7 anymore. I figured I could install windows 7 fresh on the new PC and use her old license key to activate it once she gets it. Is there any issue with my logic here?
Here's where things get complicated. There is obviously a lot of distance involved, so I will have to assemble the PC and then mail it to her. She is not PC savvy, so having her do really any of the installation work is out of the question. She needs her old PC to continue functioning, poorly as it may be, right up to the point the new one gets there. Mail takes 3 weeks or so, which means it is absolutely out of the question that I activate the new pc before mailing it, since I assume that would knock the old one offline and she can't be out of work for three weeks, or even 3 days for that matter.
I need the new PC to be as close to ready to go for her as possible on arrival. I would love to be able to install all of the updates, antivirus, core programs she uses for work, etc before mailing it off so that she can just boot it up, call Microsoft and get it authorized, but I am not sure if this is possible. I know you can use a thumb drive with a downloaded official copy of windows 7 for the install, which I already have, so that part is not the real issue. The issue is whether I can load everything up for her prior to sending it off, because if I can't it's a no go for her. She'd rather take credit and pay for an overpriced hunk of junk that wrestle with a windows install. Not rational, I know, but such is life and it is not going to change.
So what I'm really asking, is whether I could use an official copy of windows 7 home premium on a thumb drive, and get the system the whole way up to operational before I register it? If need be I have a disc copy as well. Usually it says you have so many days to register your product, but will it allow me to install the updates etc? I don't want her to have to sit around for a day doing updates and installing programs.
I've been having a repetitive and troubling problem with Windows 7 when signing in to any of the user accounts on my PC.Said problem seems to occur at varying levels, so I'll just put them down in point form to try and avoid confusion:1) The desktop (and icons) show up completely black, and the task bar/start menu (everything, save the mouse, really) freezes, forcing me to hard boot.2) EVERYTHING on the desktop, save for the start icon, shows up black, and the start button is frozen. Once again, the mouse remains active, but I'm forced to hard boot.3) The desktop, icons, task bar and start icon all show up fine, but my PC suddenly freezes, forcing me to hard boot yet again. Once again, the mouse remains active.
I would really, really like to solve this problem without having to reinstall the operating system. I've already reinstalled it once, and I don't want to reinstall Microsoft Office, my security programs, photoshop, etc... all over again.Microsoft Office in particular, as I'd have to buy it all over again. ><At the same time, I hate hard booting my PC. I've heard it's not good to shut down your computer that way, but I literally have no choice when this problem arises
I CANNOT choose my own wallpaper. I've research what the problem and I've come up with different solutions, but none of these seems to work such as, deleting the Transcoded Wallpaper.jpg.To put it simple my wallpaper is black or a solid color and even if hit "save changes" in the personalize menu in Windows 7, it still won't change. I see the icons, everything is working fine, its just that my wallpaper can't be change and you only could change to a solid color. This issue started when a relative of mine installed iMesh into the computer, I removed it completely and since then the black solid wallpaper has been on my desktop.
I am using Windows 7 build 6956 on a laptop with t3200 2.ghz cpu and intel 4500 gma with 4gigs of ram.Now my problem is that on random cases the desktop would go black more specifically the wallpaper disappears. The taskbar is there working OK, when I click the show desktop button on the taskbar the wallpaper re-appears. When I browse the windows by hovering over the windows all seems fine but when I click on the window the wallpaper disappear again. So far it can be resolved by a simple login/logout but still annoying. The only instances I remember this happening was when I was trying out the slideshow and after playing dota (GARENA).
I changed this in the registry some time ago to prevent my child from messing with it. Now I can't remember how I did it. It's not corrupted drivers or anything
i have been searching this and other forums for hours trying to find the cause/remedy for randomly appearing black boxes instead of desktop icons after boot up. its 50/50 wether normal icons appear or if black boxes appear. the icon texts are always present.
every time i boot in safe mode they appear normally. i use the "small icon" setting, if i change to medium or large icon size i still get the "small icon" sized black box overlayed on the larger icon (half icon half black box).
has anyone come accross this problem or have any advice for me, bearing in mind my computer skills are limited.
After I finished playing COD MW2 last evening, I shut my computer down. This morning upon starting it up, I had 3/4 of my desktop icons covered with black boxes. I have tried system restore, deleting the icon cache and reboot all to no avail. I am running Windows Home Premium in 64bit mode. Also ran a malware scan and cleaned everything it found. I am running Norton Security Suite which works great for catching anything that comes my way.
I have a Windows 7 Desktop mainly used as a server to store files and I have a Windows 7 Laptop used to mainly access and store files to the desktop. I do not use home groups because I find that work groups work better for what I am doing. I have researched hours and hours on forums and goggling troubleshooting tips but I can not find one thing that will fix my problem. So here it is.My laptop can see, view and access my desktop no problem. It shows up on the network and also sees the media devices on it. I can ping and view and alsp remote to desktop. So this is working as expected. My desktop however cannot see my laptop on the network. I can ping and view laptop by ip address though. I can also see the laptop as a media device. I just cannot see the laptop as a computer on the network.I have renamed work-group, reconfigured windows firewall, disabled windows firewall, and pretty much done everything basic and also some minor registry changed but converted back because problem did not fix.
I have an HP desktop running windows vista that will soon be passed on to me. If I buy an "Upgrade" version of windows 7, is there a way to completely and totally wipe out the hard drive and upgrade, or would I have to buy the more expensive "full install" version of 7?
I have an HP MINI 311 with Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit and the computer starts up fine but has tons of execute errors and doesn't display the desktop. I get environment error when trying to run programs and the shellexecex 203 error also. I have no recovery disk and recovery manager does not work. What is the best way to re-install my OS? The recovery disks you get online for recovery manager only fix startup problems which I don't have. Do I need to re-format and buy a new OS?
For the past few weeks I have noticed my laptop becoming slower and slower. As of a few days ago it has been ridiculously slow and is sometimes unresponsive to commands or keyboard. It used to go straight to a black screen with only the cursor after start up but now sometimes starts up, although very slow. Now my desktop started doing it too. I don't know what's going on with them. I had not had any virus protection for a while and recently installed webroot complete 2012 on both of them and scanned, finding nothing. My desktop sometimes loads into safe mode when I tell it to, however it still is extremely slow, SAme with he laptop. And if I try to start up the desktop on normal is stays on black screen. I have noticed that sometimes I will get the "Microsoft windows isn't responding" pop up. My control alt delete doesn't work on either of them either, it pos up suing something like " the control alt delete function could not be started blah blah blah".
