Receiving Error That Hard Drive Is Failing?

Sep 19, 2011

I have a toshiba hard drive in my laptop that Windows 7 says "Windows detected a hard disk problem." I've backed up my personal files, and now I'm trying to figure out if it can be repaired or if I'm going to have to buy a new hard drive. I tried to run the Toshiba hard drive diagnostic, but the tool isn't allowing me to select my drive and can't run without being able to do that, even though it is my only hard drive. I've checked for viruses and malware, and it says there are none. I've defraged as well

Hard Drive Failing - Get A New System Drive?

Aug 11, 2010

My primary system drive where Windows 7 is installed is a: WD 7K 16M SATA2 WD3200AAKS HD 320G - OEM. Long version (feel free to scroll down to short version): Yesterday, I came back to my computer, and all of my applications and desktop were frozen, but I could move the mouse. When I clicked on a window, the cursor would turn to the blue spinning thing, and the window would eventually say not responding and turn a lighter shade of white. I couldn't click on the desktop of the start menu, so I did a hard reset. The computer then wouldn't pass the black "starting windows" screen. I did another hard reset, and it asked me if I wanted windows to try to repair start up. Soon after that, it asked if I wanted to restore windows, but when I clicked OK, I got what looked to me to be a memory error. Then startup repair seemed to do nothing for a few hours, till I got impatient and restarted the computer. I was able to get into Windows, and I scheduled a memory test, and reset the computer. Memory test ran and found no problems. I restarted and Windows loaded, but soon after my computer was laggy and the programs were freezing. So then I thought it may be a HDD issue, so I scheduled to run check disk on that drive, and reset. Check Disk found corrupt files and bad sectors. After that, I was able to load Windows normally, but when I tried to open MC7 for "Live TV", it wouldn't pass the searching for tuner stage, so I closed out MC7, and got an error message in the action center. So I ran chkdsk again. This time, windows wouldn't load after restart, so I went back into repair startup, and it seemed to have found the error really fast, restarted and everything seemed fine. I decided to run chkdsk one more time for good measure, and it had a couple more read errors and found more bad sectors. Now I have been running windows with no apparent issues yet.Short version, computer froze, ended up running chkdsk 3 times, had to repair start up, and now everything is OK for now, but obviously I'm worried about more harddrive failure. Here are my questions:

1)How troubling is this? Do I need a new harddrive ASAP, or can it run for years with a few bad sectors? Any further tests I could run?

2)If I am to get a new system drive, what should I get? All I have on it is windows and my programs. I have separate disks for data. I'm using roughly 32 GBs out of 298. Should I just try to get the same drive (same speed, same capacity), or is there a good upgrade and is it worth getting an upgrade (I don't need more space, but something that would help performance maybe?) or any good deals on sale now?

3) I bought my current (failing) HDD on 9/24/2008, and I'm pretty sure WD has 5 year limited warranty. Should I peruse that angle?

4)How should I got about moving/restoring this OS to the new drive?

4a) I have a half dozen Windows Image Backups saved. Should I just use an old one from before the failure, or should I try to create a new one now, even though the disk may be corrupt?

4b)Or is there a better program to be using than Windows backup and restore?

Unable To Start Computer Without Receiving Error

I have an Asus laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."I've found some threads linking this error to AVG, so I've already followed these directions:url...However, I'm still unable to start the computer without receiving this error. The computer has also attempted to run "Startup Repair" but it just says it "cannot repair this computer automatically."

Receiving Error Message When Deploying Windows 7 With WDS

Oct 13, 2011

I am attempting to test deploy a Windows 7 image to a VMusing VMware Workstation. I have Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a DomainController with WDS. All network services, such as AD, DHCP and DNS have beeninstalled and configured as well. Both the install.wim and boot.wim files are stored on a separate drive (E)on theWDS server. My problem iswhen I try to PXE-boot the VM to send the image, I get the following error message: CLIENT MAC ADDRESS 00 0C 29 64 E4 5A GUID: 564D90FE-71D7-4F36-3893-38ACA864E45A PXE-E53: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found

A quick hunch would leave me to believe that both image files werent stored onthe server, but I double checked and both files were present. I have the network adapter on the serverconfigured with a static IP address (192.168.1.10), as well as DHCP configuredwith a 10 IP address range. (192.168.1.11-192.168.1.20). Ive heard that WDS shouldnt be on the same DC as DHCP and DNS. Does this really matter? Ive checked all of my configurations.

This problem just started today and I am a bit confused when I try to get my email on WLM I get the above error. I am going through my ISP and using POP3 the POP setting is pop.midstatesd.net and smtp.midstatesd.net all of the setting are correct so not sure why I am getting the error. I should mention that I am connecting using a laptop with a Dlink router and do not have any issues connecting to the internet. I am unable to ping the pop.midstatesd.net so figured something was set wrong on the router but cannot find any thing that would be blocking it there.

Hp Laptop And Hard Drives Failing?

Feb 8, 2013

I recieved a HP G62 340US about a year ago. A couple months back, around christmas, the computer stopped booting. It hung at the windows 7 starting screen. I ran a test and the long dst failed. I bought a new seagate 500Gb hard drive and reinstalled windows 7 (from the recovery disks that I had to buy). My computer has been working fine since about a week ago. When I opened Firefox or wordpad, I would get a BSOD. I found out it was a problem with my fonts folder. If I try to open the fonts folder, I get another BSOD. Then today I opened Photoshop and another BSOD. When my computer restarted, It said hard drive failure is immenent, then I preformed hard drive diagnostics. SMART passed, short dst passed, and long dst failed. Last week when I preformed the test, everything passed. I am worried that my hard drive will die again soon. Could it be that the hard drive is corrupted where the font folder is?

Failure ID:QC7VBS-5LI6H6-XXD0141-61DJ03
Product ID:XH066UA#ABA
COMPUTER:
Windows 7 64 Bit Home
8 GB upgraded ram
My hdd is:
Seagate Momentus Thin ST500LT012 500GB 5400 RPM 2.5"

Should I include the dump for the bsod as well?

Installed A New Hard Drive And Got An Error

Aug 7, 2012

My HP Pavilion DV7 4267CL's hard drive went out last week. I bought a new one, the same brand name and specifications. I installed the drive, turned it on, inserted the first disc, restarted it and follow the prompts. I selected to reset factory default and continue to follow the on screen prompts. After installing all four discs, it restarted by itself and gave me an HP logo. It ask me to restart to complete installation. When it restarted again, it gave me a bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I pressed it and it gave me the same error again. I did all the reinstallation 3x but no luck. I was getting the same error. So, I went to the bio boot utility by restarting the pc and preesing F10 while booting. I rearrange the booting sequence, dvd/cd rom drive, internal computer hard drive restarted it, inserted the first disc, turned off pc and reinstalled it and all 3 other discs. But at the end, I'm still getting the same error.

Hard Drive Disk Error Occurred

Apr 14, 2012

This is kinda long and I've fixed it, but could use your input. So after waking up, my parents informed me that the computer was shutting down randomly. I turned it on and "a disk error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart " appeared. It's a Sata hard drive so I checked the cables to make sure they were plugged in correctly and they were, and then I tried connecting it to another computer with that computers cables and that didn't work either. My parents not wanting to buy one online, decided to just go to bestbuy and buy one there, since we already had the Windows 7 Disk at home. I formatted it, partitioned it, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it and everything worked. I decided to connect the Hard drive that didn't work while the computer was still on, and it immediately started downloading the drivers it needed and up popped all the hard drive. I'm going to start transferring all the important things like music, videos and games, and after, all I can see are the following 3 things; after getting all the data we want off it, should I reinstall windows to see if my other computer will recognize it (Even though it couldn't before), format it and just use it as extra data (though since it already couldn't boot up, the ability to keep data on it may fail in a couple of days/weeks) or just put it away and not use it at all.

Error Booting From External Hard Drive

Jan 5, 2010

I am trying to wipe my current XP installation clean and move on to Windows 7.

I first tried to install the setup.exe (Custom install option of course) from within the XP OS, but soon discovered you cannot do that and wipe out my only partition on C: at the same time.

I don't have a DVD-RW drive to write a boot disk, so instead I am trying to install through my external hard drive. I meticulously followed this tutorial from PC World yet when I instruct the PC in BIOS to boot from the external hard drive, I keep getting an "invalid system disk, press any key" error when the computer boots and looks for the setup files. This is despite the fact that setup seems to work perfectly from within the XP OS.

PC World tutorial:
Install Windows 7 From an External Hard Drive - PC World

Can anyone please offer me any helpful advice to get the external hard drive setup to work or help me find a way to install 7 from within XP?

Anyone know exactly why I keep getting the "invalid disk" error each time when I try to boot from my external hard drive? As mentioned in the PC World tutorial, I marked the external hard drive as an active partition and the setup files seem to work fine from within XP. If it helps, in the external hard drive root folder is both the Windows 7 ISO and all the files contained (which I extracted using PowerISO).

Can't Access External Hard Drive And Error On CHKDSK

Nov 17, 2012

This morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.

After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".

I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.

I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?

No Boot Sector On Internal Hard Drive Error

Nov 28, 2011

Yesterday, I was browsing on my computer and heard a weird clicking noise when the CD drive was running. About a few minutes after that, Firefox froze so I did a hard reboot, and up comes this message:

"No boot sector on internal hard drive No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."

I have no idea what it means, and I've been everywhere trying to do System Restore using the Windows 7 reinstallation disk, but unfortunately I couldn't create a restore point because my jump drive doesn't have enough space and Startup Repair couldn't solve my problem. I've even tried the bootrec.exe on Command Prompt but I had no idea what to do. This is the first time that this has happened to me. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I'm on a tight limb about this problem right now because my warranty expired in early June this year, and I don't have the money for them to look at it, let alone buy a brand-new hard drive.

MBR Error 1 And Hard Drive Not Listed In System Recovery

May 17, 2012

I had two hdd's in my computer and decided to remove one as I did not really need it and figured it save some power, after removing secondary hard drive which was just being used as storage i received the " MBR Error 1" after about 2 hours researching, I found I could repair it from windows cd, only problem is I only have a live usb version of it and when I try to launch system recovery the operating system is not listed and I have to load drivers for the hard disk. I really do not want to wipe and reinstall windows as its only been 2 weeks since i built the system and also I have a game which is 25gb digital download installed on it but it deletes the installation files after installing it and reinstalling would mean re-installing.

I guess I have 2 questions:
1. Is there anyway to copy a liveusb onto a disk ? for example, make an iso of a usb drive and burn it to dvd?
2. What drivers would I have to load on the windows startup recovery to get it to see the operating system

Below are my system specifications:
MOBO: Asus sabertooth z77
RAM: gskill ripjaws 8gb (2 x 4gb)
CPU: Intel i5-2500k
GRAPHICS: Zotac geforce gtc 580 3gb

Signs Of A Failing SSD Drive?

Aug 21, 2012

After i bought it i read tons of reviews about it failing or having issues right from the start,, Mine has worked flawlessly so far however its only been a little over a month or two since i got it. Just yesterday i started having issues where on boot up it freezes just before or right after it finds the SSD drive.Something locked up yesterday and i had no choice but to do a hard power off, Right after that one of my other drives was showing as dirty. I scanned it and had windows fix any issues with it and everything seemed fine for about 5hours or so till my system again froze then would not boot because it was not finding the SSD drive. I took the side off my case and checked that the sata connections were good then started back up and everything was fine again for maybe another hour. Then my IE froze and my desktop went solid white and i got some kind of security error when i hit Ctrl + Alt + Del that told me to either use the esc key or to use the power button to shut down,,, esc did nothing but the power button killed it QUICK! This time i took the side off my case again and eliminated all but the SSD drive and have been fine now for about another 3-4 hrs. So anyhow what im wondering is if there is a SSD drive utility that will scan my drive and check it for issues? I have read not to use defragmenter on my SSD drive and i never have but what about windows chkdsk or maybe Tune up utillities drive check?

I assume either my ISP/router is the issue or something else strange is going on. I tried changing my DNS server to the google ones as well as adding a server to my hosts file but it still returns the same error. Just curious what exactly the message means if it really is DNS related as hard-coding the IP into the internet time requester returns the same error.

Updates Failing With Error Code 800736B3

Nov 6, 2009

after successfully installing windows 7 (my first windows install since XP, after which I moved to Ubuntu) and doing the initial set-up etc., installing my own anti virus software and MS Office etc, I thought it was time to let it update itself.

however, every time I tell it to update then shut down it fails. I tried to troubleshoot it using the MS help box which was very little actual help, and then tried to initiate the update manually, however, when it comes to installing some windows 7 security and system updates and some IE updates, installation fails, resulting in error code 800736B3, whatever that means. The updates it fails on are:

security update for INternet explorer 8 for windows 7 (KB974455)

security update for windows 7 (KB974571)

security update for windows 7 (KB975467)

update for internet explorer 8 compatability view list for windows 7 (KB975364)

update for internet explorer 8 for windows 7 (KB976749)

update for windows 7 (KB974431) I'm currently running avast! (v4.8 home edition) following Windows 7 informing me that it would not allow AVG to run (it was from an 'untrusted source' apparently, despite having been working a few days previously), but thats another problem entirely

Any help than can be offered will be much obliged! All I've been able to turn up from googling is a command that un-registers windows, which then for some reason allows the updates to occur, following which I can use my original activation code (given to me by digital river with the student upgrade deal) to re-activate windows, although I am reluctant to try this!
