I have a failing hard drive on my laptop, when i proceed to buy a new one, what do i need to do to get windows 7 onto the new hard drive? can i do that with system restore or back up software?
View 2 RepliesMy primary system drive where Windows 7 is installed is a: WD 7K 16M SATA2 WD3200AAKS HD 320G - OEM. Long version (feel free to scroll down to short version): Yesterday, I came back to my computer, and all of my applications and desktop were frozen, but I could move the mouse. When I clicked on a window, the cursor would turn to the blue spinning thing, and the window would eventually say not responding and turn a lighter shade of white. I couldn't click on the desktop of the start menu, so I did a hard reset. The computer then wouldn't pass the black "starting windows" screen. I did another hard reset, and it asked me if I wanted windows to try to repair start up. Soon after that, it asked if I wanted to restore windows, but when I clicked OK, I got what looked to me to be a memory error. Then startup repair seemed to do nothing for a few hours, till I got impatient and restarted the computer. I was able to get into Windows, and I scheduled a memory test, and reset the computer. Memory test ran and found no problems. I restarted and Windows loaded, but soon after my computer was laggy and the programs were freezing. So then I thought it may be a HDD issue, so I scheduled to run check disk on that drive, and reset. Check Disk found corrupt files and bad sectors. After that, I was able to load Windows normally, but when I tried to open MC7 for "Live TV", it wouldn't pass the searching for tuner stage, so I closed out MC7, and got an error message in the action center. So I ran chkdsk again. This time, windows wouldn't load after restart, so I went back into repair startup, and it seemed to have found the error really fast, restarted and everything seemed fine. I decided to run chkdsk one more time for good measure, and it had a couple more read errors and found more bad sectors. Now I have been running windows with no apparent issues yet.Short version, computer froze, ended up running chkdsk 3 times, had to repair start up, and now everything is OK for now, but obviously I'm worried about more harddrive failure. Here are my questions:
1)How troubling is this? Do I need a new harddrive ASAP, or can it run for years with a few bad sectors? Any further tests I could run?
2)If I am to get a new system drive, what should I get? All I have on it is windows and my programs. I have separate disks for data. I'm using roughly 32 GBs out of 298. Should I just try to get the same drive (same speed, same capacity), or is there a good upgrade and is it worth getting an upgrade (I don't need more space, but something that would help performance maybe?) or any good deals on sale now?
3) I bought my current (failing) HDD on 9/24/2008, and I'm pretty sure WD has 5 year limited warranty. Should I peruse that angle?
4)How should I got about moving/restoring this OS to the new drive?
4a) I have a half dozen Windows Image Backups saved. Should I just use an old one from before the failure, or should I try to create a new one now, even though the disk may be corrupt?
4b)Or is there a better program to be using than Windows backup and restore?
I cannot complete a successful system restore for the longest of time. i get an error ComPlusStaging.i cannot do a repair install because my laptop did not come with discs.

It now operates on Windows 7.Luckily I had backed up some important files onto a portable external Lacie Hardrive. I now need to return some of the files back to the laptop so that I can use them..but I can't seem to find a way to do it!! I suppose I'm just being 'thick'..but can anyone tell me how to do it.

I'm not sure but I believe it was during some registry cleaning-up that I must have screwed something up.Ever since my System Restore hasn't worked right, I've not bee able to have a successful system restore since.Wasn't an issue until now when I very much want to restore. (I uninstalled Steam and I'm hoping a restore will reverse that so I don't have to download my game library again.)I tried to restore to a point created yesterday and got teh same error I've been getting:Quote:"System Restore failed to extract the file(C:$Extend$RmMetadata$Txf) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore.(0x80070005)" I've been trying to research the problem but have heard everything from "It's Norton!" View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm writing this from a different computer because I can't even get onto the internet on mine.Pretty much all programs fail to run. When I double-click on the icon, I get the usual spinning "loading" circle and then nothing happens.When I try to open straight from a saved file, I get an error message. For example, whenever I try to open a word doc, I get this error message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."Symantec Endpoint Protection has been turned off and every time I go to the Action Center to turn it back on, nothing happens. I get the usual message that asks if I want to allow the change and when I click "allow," nothing changes.I've done several system restores, even in Safe Mode, and they have all failed. System repairs have all failed too. Obviously, virus scans are out of the question and Windows Defender (one of the programs that actually will run) keeps telling me that there is no malicious software to be found on my system.
This all started yesterday afternoon. I was running Firefox as usual and had a word document open that I was typing in. I walked away from my laptop and when I came back, there were three pop-ups on the screen from a virus that I had just managed to get rid of several days before. I closed them out and was preparing to run Malwarebytes when my computer shut itself down suddenly. There haven't been any pop-ups or anything that would indicate that this is a virus. However, I tried the same fix that I used to remove the virus the first time (copying the Malwarebyes file 'mbam.exe' to the desktop and naming it as 'mbam.COM' so that it will open) but even that does not work. I've tried the regedit fix that I've found in forums here but that didn't work either.
my desktop computer won't boot. When I turn it on it displays the welcome splash screen and then goes black. A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my laptop, it shows the HP logo, begins to boot and is almost instantly interrupted by a white screen that scrolls down from the top. It reboots right after the white screen.I am able at the HP logo screen able to navigate to System Restore and that is where I run into my next problem.When the System Restore window opens for confirmation it shows that "Local Disk (C) (System)" status: "Ready to restore" and the check-box next to it is checked.The next line has a empty check-box for "Local Disk (C)" with the status: "The drive cannot be found." I can also successfully boot into Safe Mode with Networking. I can access all my files. Which leads me to believe that it is a hardware problem. Possibly the motherboard or graphics card.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recieved a HP G62 340US about a year ago. A couple months back, around christmas, the computer stopped booting. It hung at the windows 7 starting screen. I ran a test and the long dst failed. I bought a new seagate 500Gb hard drive and reinstalled windows 7 (from the recovery disks that I had to buy). My computer has been working fine since about a week ago. When I opened Firefox or wordpad, I would get a BSOD. I found out it was a problem with my fonts folder. If I try to open the fonts folder, I get another BSOD. Then today I opened Photoshop and another BSOD. When my computer restarted, It said hard drive failure is immenent, then I preformed hard drive diagnostics. SMART passed, short dst passed, and long dst failed. Last week when I preformed the test, everything passed. I am worried that my hard drive will die again soon. Could it be that the hard drive is corrupted where the font folder is?

I have a toshiba hard drive in my laptop that Windows 7 says "Windows detected a hard disk problem." I've backed up my personal files, and now I'm trying to figure out if it can be repaired or if I'm going to have to buy a new hard drive. I tried to run the Toshiba hard drive diagnostic, but the tool isn't allowing me to select my drive and can't run without being able to do that, even though it is my only hard drive. I've checked for viruses and malware, and it says there are none. I've defraged as well

I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOn this recent windows update, 2/14/13, my computer froze on the "Preparing to configure windows" screen for several hours. I rebooted normally and the screen went to "configuring updates" and stuck at 67% for about an hour. I got frustrated with it and rebooted to safe mode to see if I could do a system restore and when I did it said there was no restore point back up! So I rebooted normally and now it is still just sitting on the "Preparing to Configure Windows" screen with the circle spinning. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Dimension 2400.

I looked it up and it turns out that this message occurs some time before your drive fails.I did a Full computer backup using windows Back up utility using an external Hard drive. Now I'm going to buy a new internal Hard drive to replace the faulty one.What are the steps i have to do to back up properly?After some search,I learned that:
1_ Backup everything.
2_ Replace Faulty drive.
3_ Rebuild Raid 0 array.
4_ Restore the system image.
Does the new internal Hard drive have to be the same brand/type/size as the old Faulty hard drive? Also I've never used Raid, so how do i recreate a new raid 0 array ? From Bios ? Should i create a repair disk too ? or would Windows dvd work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am building a brand new system and I am going with a pretty decent SSD as my main drive and in the past even my traditional hard drives have failed where my OS install was causing me much stress because I lose work and time.
What software would you recommend to back up (clone) my Windows 7 install onto another hard drive. I would want the automated software to do this on a nightly bases. So if my main system drive fails I can point the boot disk to the "backup" drive and proceed as normal.

When I try to back up MY Documents, it scans the files, then the window says "wrong input" & "access denied".I have been trying to get help from Silicon Power customer service, but they haven't been able to shed any light on my problem. View 6 Replies View RelatedMy C: dreive is a 128GB SSD which devided into 70 and 50 GB.Windows and all programs are installed on 70GB, the 50GB drive is free.All programs are about 11GB, Win7 ultimate 64 is about 17GB so all together it should not exceed 30GB. Suddenly I found on one day that my user folder became 25GB without any reason. When looking into it and calculated all subfolders it even did not come to 1GB.So the C drive is almost full and I have no idea for the reason.
